I have just started Solodyn and even though I wanted Accutane I am hoping for the best with this drug. I have been on Minocycline before and I didn't realize it was a type of minocycline until I picked up the prescription. I have also been on tetracycline, spironolactone, eyrithromycine, Keflex - I think I am forgetting one or two but the point is that I have tried it all. Up until last week I had not been to the dermatologist in five years because I had given up and at the time I was not interested in Accutane. I set up the appointment planning to ask for Accutane because I have had it with my cystic acne and I would put up with just about anything for a few months to have a cure of the acne. It was then that I discovered that she legally could not prescribe me Accutane without trying something else first through her. (Basically whatever I took 5 years ago doesn't matter) She said 2 months on SOLODYN and if the results are not good then I can start an Accutane course. I am bitter and negative about SOLODYN after I read that you should not take it for more than 12 weeks. What happens then? I would bet money that acne returns, so what is the point? :snooty:

hello everyone-

I was given this medication after years of fighting acne/rosacea. i have been on and off doxycyclin for about 5 years. after, nothing really worked .( dox gave me upset stomach and as for clarity of skin, worked a bit but,not as flawless as i wanted) so she finally gave me solodyn 90 mg. i was lucky enough to receive a discount card , where i paid 10 dollars for the prescription. Luckily, I experienced zero side effects from this medication, and it worked much better than the doxycyclin .my perscription has ended, I haven't been on it for a month...I understood that after reading random facts like " usage after 12 weeks is unknown" type stuff, I would rather forget about going any further with this treatment. I believe i took this for about 3-4 months.

I actually cannot believe how well it worked for me! usually after being off meds, right away i get very bad breakouts..so far I havnt had any breakouts ( *fingers crossed, knock on wood*)

that being said, I have stopped using metrogel as well. I have finally found a product that does wonders for my skin - Yonka. so, i can only hope I can maintain my new clear skin!!

one last word on solodyn- i ended up getting a cyst after 2 weeks of use. I disregarded this, knowing that it takes up to a month to see results from meds. I read that solodyn doesnt do anything for cysts. new cysts haven't formed, however i still have the same cyst from 3 months ago! I even have had cortisone injections 4 times! i have no idea if solodyn has any part of this, but it seems like I have a cyst with its own mind. it is not a giant cyst, but its a discreet cyst that is in a form of a line rather than a giant bump. I plan on seeing my dermo again soon, and if she suggests continuing with solodyn, I will only decline because of what was stated about usage after 12 weeks. unfortunatly, I loved the results, but im not feeling safe with the medication as a whole.

I read that also - that it is not "for" cystic acne. I read that online on SOLODYN's website after I returned home from the derma doc and Walgreens. I was pissed! BUt - as pissed and confused as to why she put me on this I am also a postive person and am hoping for the best. I have also had those longated cysts, I have one right now. I am almost 27 and after 15 years of fighting cystic acne I feel like I am at war with this bacteria and that it is going to take a powerful drug with maybe side effects to rid my acne and if solodyn does work, what happens after 12 weeks? SInce the doc said I only have to give it 8 weeks - thats all I am going to give it and then I am taking the risk of taking a course of Accutane. I will follow all of the rules - at this point I am willing to do just about anything.

Hello,

I have been on Solodyn for a month now, and I have noticed slight bruising of my bottom lip. It is not swollen and it's really not very noticable at all. But it is bruised/discolored. I was wondering if this was from the Solodyn. I called my Derm. and they told me to discontinue use for 3 days (which I did) and it didn't go away. I started to take the antibiotic again. I have no other side effects thus far, and I feel as though my skin has toned down a lot. I have done EVERYTHING, and I mean everything to help fight off my stubborn moderate acne. I completed Accutane last September, and I'm back at the doctors already. In lieu of putting me right back on Accutane for round 2, the doctor decided to try this. It doesn't help with the hyperpigmentation that my zits have left, but those are easily covered. I didn't even have to wear makeup at all while on Accutane, but sadly, my results only lasted about 5 months after I was done with my treatment. The one good thing that I learned from Acctuane is that I don't have to go tanning! I haven't been in a tanning booth for over a year now, and I know my skin will thank me for that someday, although, it's not doing a good job of appreciating me right now.

I've been on solodyn for a year now. It kept me like 50% clear for like $800 a month for about 10 months.

No side effects other than an occasional case of the shits.

Not worth the price, and I'm becoming resistant which means I'm breaking out worse than I was before I started taking it.

Hi,

I first started with the Acne.Org regime but the Benzoyl Peroxide really dried me out and created more breakouts.

Finally went to the dermatologist last week and they Epiduo and Solodyn 90mg..

Dr orders were to start by applying a pea size to entire face 3 times a week for the first two weeks, then every other day for 2 weeks, and finally every day after that.

Soloydn was prescribed as a daily dose at the same time each day.

Because i was use to benzoyl peroxide i started with applying Epiduo 3 times the first week and then every other day the 2nd week (this week)..

I have extremely sensitive skin and cant handle the daily usage.

Coming up on 2 weeks, i've noticed that the Epiduo has decreased the size of my acne, removing the nodules all together.. My skin has also become alot smoother and softer..

Besides the slight redness, i have not noticed any other side effect.

I am returning to the derm in two months to review the progress and receive additional medication to clear up the scars and expedite the clearing process..

I was on Solodyn for 6 months. My doctor wanted me to be on it even longer, but it really didn't do anything for me. It shrank the nodules I had but did absolutely nothing for the small breakouts that I get all over. I weaned myself off it over a period of a month and a half, I seem to be breaking out a little worse, but no nodules yet, so, that's good. I asked to be put on accutane because I'm so sick of this shit, but by doc said no, that it is a bacterial problem. I don't know where she's getting that from since the antibiotics didn't help hardly at all. Basically saying, "This thing doesn't work, but we want you to keep using it anyway." Besides, andtibiotics are NOT a long term solution. When I resisted going back on antibiotics she suggested I use an over the counter antibacterial wash, it's red in color and very watery. She told me to wash with it once a week, i've this twice and so far there doesn't seem to be a difference. I'm very frustrated and feel like my doctor is not listening to me. :wall:

this antibiotic suckx. do not take it. i had been on it for like 8 months and it did improve my skin a bit but then after 4 months off this prescription my skin got worse than ever. now i constantly have ugly cystic pimples which i didnt have before. don't take it

This is the same problem I am having with it. I have been on it over a year now. It cleared me up pretty well, then I added Aldactone (Spironolactone) to it and I am completely clear. But as soon as I try to get off of the Solodyn, or run out of it for a couple of days, I break out like you wouldn't believe. I mean absolutely worse than before I started taking it and I have NO IDEA how the hell to get off of it. In order to STAY clear, I have to STAY on solodyn or at least some form of Minocycline.

I have been on a regular regimine of Differin Gel .3% and using gentle cleansers and moisturizers by my favorite skin care line Pur~lisse. I have taken many many oral prescriptions over the years and finally decided to go completely off any oral meds as non seemed to help me to completely clear up. The only thing I never tried was Accutane.

November of 2009 I went to my derm to ask for help since my break outs were getting really bad again since that September, and I hadn't been doing anything different to change my routine. I was used to having to nurse continual small break outs but now it was getting seriously bad again. She prescribed Solodyn, and Triaz towels containing benzoyal peroxide (both products made by Medicis) to go along with my current Differin Gel.

By my company holiday party in January of 2010, my face was completely clear and has stayed like that. I have probably had maybe 3 major zits on my face this entire year...and for me that is a complete sucess story! Even the texture of my skin changed, and I'm 40 years old and I've dealt with acne since I was 14.

I was told by my derm that many people who have tried other various meds, like me, find that the solodyn and triaz combination has been the only thing that has ever worked. Medicis scientists seem to have found certain "perceptors" in the body that facilitate the acne that this particular drug fights and it therefore works differently than the older generation of cycline drugs.....perhaps that's the reason for the really EXPENSIVE cost of these medications without the discount cards. If my doctor could't give those cards out to her patients, she wouldn't be able to prescribe them. (her words).

The discount cards that I got from my derm really helped as my prescriptions for all three products has come to $10.00 a pc for each. The Solodyn and the Triaz towels are otherwise close to $500 per perscription without the card and the Differin is about $150 without it's rebate coupon.

OH - also I want to add my regimine:

Night:

Wash with Purlisse cleanser

Wash with a Triaz cloth

Apply Purlisse eye moisturizer to eyes

Apply Differin Gel at night only to face

Night and only in begining when the acne was really bad:

Apply Neutrogena On the Spot acne treatment all over the face OVER the Differin and to go bed

Morning:

Wash with Triaz cloth

Apply Purlisse eye moisturizer to eyes

I like makeup and do mine daily but I only apply blush and bare minerals concealor on marks and use a mineral based powder to finish off. I stay away from full on makeup coverage on my skin with liquid foundations.

Do you guys know how this stuff will work on a 14 year old? It seems like most of the people here are talking about acne that occurs in adulthood and I think that's harder to get rid of than acne caused by puberty. My derm prescribed me 65mg solodyn and ziana and I've been taking it for 5 days with lots of new pus filled pimples. I know this is probably a good thing, because it's purging. I'm just wondering if there are any other young people that are taking this stuff?

I was on solodyn for 10 months or so, and I was pretty clear. I've been off it for a month or two and it seems my acne has relapsed. Do I need to ask for a bigger dosage? And if I get back on it how long should I expect it to take for me to be clear again?

My son was put on Solodyn in July of 2009. I noticed his face really cleared up. However, he also started loosing his hair. I did not know that this would be a side effect of Solodyn. One day in June of this year, my son was sitting down and I went over to him and saw his SCALP he had lost so much hair. I immediately got on the internet and googled hairloss + teenage boys. One thing caught my eye, "some acne medication can cause hair loss". So, I googled "Solodyn + side effects" No where did it mention hair loss as being a side effect. I then googled "Solodyn + hair loss" and could not believe all the things that came up. Now mind you, I read that it was a 12 week treatment, which made me even more upset since he had been on it more than that, so I called the Dr the next day, made an appointment and was told by the nurse that they usually like to do Blood work after 3 months to make sure all is okay. When I get to the Dr office, I was told that they never do B/W for Solodyn. I explained the hairloss and how my son always had such thick hair that we had to get it thinned out every other time when he got his hair cut. He said it was not from the Solodyn. I told him that the hair loss started after he started the medication, and he asked me if my male pattern hair loss ran in the family- yes, my husband is very thin on top, The Dr said it was the start of Male Pattern Hair Loss- " really? my son is 14 yrs old?!" "yes, we are starting to see it early now days." I cannot believe the Dr really thinks I am going to believe this! My friend who cuts my sons hair has a client that works in another Dermatology office and my friend brought it up to her, but couldnt remember the name of the medication but as soon as she said hair loss, the client knew right off it was Solodyn. She said my son should probably be put on Rogaine ASAP, they also had other treatment options, such as steroid shots in the scalp. I have an appointment with that office today so see what can be done. The client said that the Solodyn because there is a family tendency for male pattern hair loss, it sped up the process. I am kicking myself everyday that I took him to the Dr for acne, which wasnt that bad in the first place, I just wanted to nip it early so it wouldnt get bad. I plan to write the company this week that makes Solodyn

You do realize the reason this wasn't listed in the side effects is because it's a very rare effect? I've never heard of this happening before. I've been on it for about a month now and I'm fine, no notable side effects so far. I still have my hair and baldness is not a trait in my family. Before you freak out you should consider that it's not the end of the world, and this medication is not the antichrist.

So it's been about a month and 10 days. So far so good, the headaches went away after about 3 weeks, and they were very mild. It definitely has an effect on the acne. When I do get a couple pimples they are extremely small and dry out and fall off within a day or two. Sorry for you guys who it didn't turn out so well for, keep on trying.

Today I was prescribed Solodyn ER 115 MG along with Epiduo gel. I'm 29 and have been struggling with acne since I got into my twenties which I never understood. My dermatologist also recommended Accutane but only as a last resort so I'm hoping this combo does good for me. My acne effects mainly my jaw and lower half of my face and it seems every year, I'll clear up and then all of a sudden I get these terrible breakouts that take an eternity to clear. I'll let you know how it goes and has anyone else been prescribed the 115 mg?

I went to a dermatologist today for the first time. I'm a 23 yr old female, with oily skin. My skin is for the most part okay. Never been perfect but reasonably clear for the most part.. but i do get a zit or two here and there and sometimes I get cystic acne on my chin. i only started to get the cysts a few years ago. I've been using proactiv since i was 17 and although it didn't make me flawless, i've seen definite improvement.

Anyway, I went to the dermatologist today cause this time i had a few bad ones and was tired of it. She proscribed me solodyn and ziana... I came home and did some research on them and found that the reviews for both of these were mostly bad... some of the things i've been reading seem too serious to even risk happening. I'm also concerned that once i stop using them it'll just come right back...

I know its different for everyone and i'll never know till i try but all in all, i'm just not sure if it's really worth it all. any opinions? i'd like to also hear if anyone else who sounds like me and have used these two.

I'm a pharmacist and I see lots of prescriptions for solodyn every day. I will tell you that this stuff is definitely not worth the money that you pay as a patient or your insurance company pays behind the scenes. Solodyn offers a co-pay card that many of you may have received from you dermatologists. While this helps bring down the costs for the patient, insurance companies pay 300 dollars or more for this medication. Most would say who cares, these insurance companies are swimming in money. On most situations I would agree with you. However, solodyn is extended release minocycline. Extended release minocycline has never been shown to be better than regular minocycline (which is a 4 dollar generic at most pharmacies). There is no reason to be using a 400 dollar product when a 4 dollar equivalent is available. It costs the entire health care system more money!

Furthermore, many of you have mentioned drug induced hepatitis. While I will say that it has never been shown in clinical trials, there is a hypothesis among infectious diseases experts that extended release minocycline may be more harmful to the liver than regular minocycline. The theory is that extended release minocycline does not give your liver any "time off" from the drug. Whereas, regular minocycline will exhibit a 3-4 hour period where your liver can take a break from metabolizing minocycline and "rest". During this 3 or 4 hour period, the bacteria that minocycline is trying to kill will not grow due to the "postantibiotic effect" that is exhibited by minocycline.

Just my two cents

I have been on Solodyn 90mg for about year and a half. Didn't have any side effects, except for feeling dizzy and sleepy for first few days and some minor stomach problems. It did clear me up almost 90%. I was still getting small zits around my periods but overall I was very happy of my improvement. Also, I was using Epiduo gel as a topical and I think it helped a lot. However, the last few months of my treatment I started getting more zits and even though they were not as horrible as the ones before Solodyn and my dermatologist kept convincing me my face was getting better i decided to stop taking it. Of course I started getting big cysts and now, 4 months later my acne is worse than ever. I'll be on Accutane starting next week

Antibiotics are just a temporary solution...

solodyn WORKS!!! First off let me start out by saying I had horrible red acne marks all over my face and I was so embarresed to even go out with my friends. My derm perscribed me solodyn and I have just finished 3 months and I am zit free!!!I also was perscribed a trentinoin cream to apply daily which helped out too. Just stay on it and you will see in time.

omg, i will be done with one month of this and although my face and back seem a bit clearer my chest broke out like crazy. I would only get 1 pimple on my chest every once in a while but not its like 10 of them all at once.

I just got back from the dermatologist. He prescribed me with solodyn. Supposedly it's the first antiboitic to be approved by the FDA specifically for ance treatment. I dont' get excited about antibiotics but at least it's better than minocycline( which I've used ). Has anyone in here had any experience with it?

I've been on Solodyn for about 4 months. I'm 21 and have been trying various acne treatments for about six years. Nothing really worked except for this. It took time but it's definitely worth the wait and price. I also use a prescription face wash called Brevoxyl-8 and Tazorac Face Cream.

-R

Did your skin started to feel different after a month?

I was on Minocin (100 mg) for 6 months. But my skin started to feel much softer and smoother after about a month. After 6 months it was completely cleared! I had perfect skin for about 2 years after but then my acne came back.

I went to a derm last week and she prescribed Solodyn. Do you recommend it? And if so what percentage are you taking that works?

If you have tried minocin then you have tried solodyn; they have the same active ingredient (namely "minocycline hydrochloride").

You may need a new derm.

Have you tried hormonal approaches to treating your acne like birth control pills or spironolactone?

Yes I was on birth control for many years and it worked great!

However I developed gallstones and I can no longer be on birth control.

I've been taking Aldactone 100 mg for 10 weeks now and I'm still breaking out.

My acne has gotten better, but I wanna be 100% clear (same as when I was taking birth control).

Since I can not take birth control, and I've tried Aldactone - my only option is to go back on antibiotic.
