Has anyone tried Zinc supplements?

I also have daily whiteheads caused by yeast after using tetracycline antibiotics for acne for 3 years. The worst thing is I no doctors will even acknowledge it, despite the whole whiteheads saga starting a matter of days after stopping the antibiotics.

Anyone know what this is called? Does it even have a name?

Malassezia folliculitis is about the closest thing I have found, but it seems to produce red bumps more than whiteheads. This whitehead aspect seems like a very specific issue to people who have been on long term antiobiotics.

Mine is significantly worse in the heat, the heatwave we are experiencing in the UK at the moment makes my skin just impossible to manage. For the last 6 months I've been using Nizoral shampoo every evening and that has been very effective but its just not doing the job this last week or so.

I have also tried Nizoral shamppo but only for a week. My skin become irritated and dry. I could not take the burning sensation after using it. It did dry up the pustules but never seemed to get better. New zits would still show up the next morning.

I have been using de la cruz sulfur for 5 years. It's good but not the cure. But when i started using it with BP, it cleared me up.

I basically wash face first, put on BP 2.5%, then sulfur and then vaseline ontop to lock it in. Wash face in the morning. My cleanser also contains 5% BP so all in all these 2 together should help. I still get pustules maybe 3 or 4 a week but not like crazy how it used to be before. Some weeks my mouth is completely clear.

I can concur with @silverlight22, benzoyle peroxide has been probably the best "cure" I've found so far. I too get 3-4 pustules a week, but it's manageable.

I've refrained from using salicylic acid and sulfur because I don't want to dry my face out too much. I feel like using BP once a night is harsh enough for my skin.

I will be trying Defense soap out soon and will let everyone know if I get any positive results. I will most likely be using it 2-3 times a week as a face wash.

Cheers,

Hi Everyone,

Hi I'm 25 years old, I'm french, and also suffer folliculitis on my face and scalp since 5 years. It started after a long period of stress, anxiety and personnal probleme and came with eczema and seborrheic dermatitis in the same time.

I tried all we can try like many of us : oral and topicalantibiotics (doxycycline, fusidic acid etc.), essential oil, benzoyle peroxyde, accutane, adapalene, clay, homeopathy, acupuncture, several diet (without gluten and dairy products ; low glycemic index, probiotics etc.). I saw many dermatologists and made 2 biological analysis ofmy skin without result. My first and only accutane cure help me a lot : folliculitis came back but not as strong as before. So,despite I spent a lot of money and energy (so many houres to find a solution on internet...),my follicilitis is still here but some weeks I have less pustules than others, and it often evolves by crisis.

I am sure of two things : stress, anxiety andtiredness are my worst enemies.
I don't now if I have leaky gut or a dysbiose in my gut but my skin disease came withIrritable bowel syndrome so.. perhaps there is a link. Moreover, like some of you I saw sometimes a link between sugar consumption, junk food and pumples crises..

Anyway, today I use green clay, some essential oil (tea tree, lavender, thym etc) andErythromycin (topical).I wash my face witha dermatological bar without soap for sensitive skin.I also have a healthy diet (low sugar, many vegetables).

Now, I decided to try sulfur thanks tosilverlight22, Silverinca and gilang91 posts !
1) I bought the De la Cruz Sulfur Ointment but not receive it yet.
2) I bought Keep it clean 10%Sulfur Soap (but I'mafraid it will dry my skin too much).
3) I also bought a lotion with sulfur (Weleda Dermalotion). It contains the following ingredients :Water, hydroalcoholic extract of chamomile *, jojoba oil *, alcohol *, hydroalcoholic extract of calendula * and echinacea *, witch hazel distillate, lemon juice *, sulfur, xanthan, ammonium salt of glycyrrhizic acid, essential oils of thyme, fir, lavender, sage and chamomile. Contains approx. 18% vol. alcohol. (the initial text is in french, sorry if the translation contains erros). I will receive it soon too.

I will share you my exeperience when I tried these products !

Silverinca :does your skin still improve since you use de la cruz ointment and sulfur soap ?

Thanks all to share your experience !

Dsophobe - glad to share my experience!

i can say i am still 80% clear. Now my whiteheads are tiny and mabe get 3-4 small ones a week.

I use the the soap morning and night, and i leave the ointment on where i feel one is coming through, when it feels bumpy.

I have ordered some benzoyl peroxide as well, to leave on at night and see if that gets me near to 100% clear.

Guys I suffered from the same breakouts as silverlight22 and crashoran. The folliculitis in the scalp and in the face especially around mouth, creases of the nose and beard area. I tried everything that if I mention the list you wont believe me. The only thing that cleared me up is Benzoyl peroxide. I had the pimples that were crusty and never healing. My skin was very flaky too. I use benzoyl peroxide as shampoo and facewash everyday. Ur skin adaps to it. Sometimes I moisturize with Aloe Vera. Even if im treating symptoms I dont give a fuck as long as Im clear. I dont have to eat like a monk ( never found a link with diet). I can drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes every now and then and my skin is perfect. It got to a point where I was developing boils/ cysts and I was taken to the ER thinking it was staph. Boom no bacteria. It was probably just a deep form of folliculitis or cystic acne. Believe me I tried jojoba oil, tea tree oil, ivermectin, doxycycline, minocycline, metrodonizale, clyndamycin oral and topicalsalicylic acid, sulfur, acv, nizoral, head and shoulders, retin a, caveman regimen, fasting, paleo diet, washing with distilled water, water only regimen. I never tried freakin benzoyl peroxide because I thought it was only a spot treatment until I saw the regimen guy put it all over his face and then crashoran talk about how he used bp. I started using it all over face. The first few days my face was pretty red like irritated but there was no breakout. It reminded me of when I use to tan for my acne. Then I did it consistently and my face stop getting red plus no breakouts l. Fast fowards 4 months from now and I am clear 100 percent and if i get a pimple is literally tiny and is gone within hours.

Thank you Silverinca and UnusualClub !

UnusualClub, could you specify the products you are using (especially for you shampoo) ?
Because I believe that benzoyl peroxide exists in several forms (facial cleanser, gel to apply X minutes and to rinse after etc.) ? How many % of BP ?

Otherwise,It would be useful to create a survey that allows anyone who has found a sustainable solution to share it but also precise its condition.. and so make a resum of the 10 pages of this thread !
This would allow to see the most effective products or diets but also the correlations between folliculitis and other problemes (other skin disease ;diet ; digestive problems etc).

Hello guys! May I direct you to this very comprehensive blog post regarding treatment of folliculitis malassezia. Very interesting read, especially the part on that MANY common ingredients such as oils and fatty acidsare in fact harmful, because they are feeding the fungus. Maybe it's worth to KEEP AWAY these ingredients while only using the products which are recommended (I think several have been mentioned in this post already, e.g. Ketoconzaole/Nizoral, Sulfur)
https://simpleskincarescience.com/pityrosporum-folliculitis-treatment-malassezia-cure/

Hope this helps!

I use both the gel and the face wash. My skin is used to it. I wash my face at least once a day with bp. If I apply the gel its maybe 3 times a week all over face. If I apply the gel then i just splash with water and then I apply the gel. If I facewash my with bp cleanser then i dont use gel. U can do it however u want as long as ur consisten with bp and make sure u do it routinely so ur skin gets used to it.

I use the clean and clear continuoua control for face and clear pore cleanser / mask neuterogena for shampoo. As gel then I use any generic brand that is 10 percent

The good thing about BP is that it cant create resistance towards it that is why it is so effective and it can keep u clear for ever as long as u use it.

Hi Guys, I™ve been following this post for so long! So many time I thought I™d beat it but alas not to be, I™ve not tried BP yet so I guess this will be my next option. Did you notice any purging or did it improve from the beginning, I will tell you what I have found out, my skin is dehydrated at time and I can™t help but wonder if the damaged moisture barrier is over producing oil and clogging pores, I had some success with applying Vaseline all over face at night but after a few days found it to irritating to remove and the irritation was then causing breakouts, I have this bloody problem it™s driving me crazy now after all these years. I™ve attached a picture so you can see I™m in the same boat as you all.. hope we can resolve this I really do :( ps I just jumped out of shower hence wet looking picture.

@Maicon : I found this website too, and effectivly, sulfur and salicylic acid arementioned!

@UnsualClub : thank you. I suppose you don't use "clear continuoua control" as shampoo because of the too high % of BP ? I will buy a cleanser with 2,5 or 3,5% of BP next week to try it .

So I received the 10% sulfur soap and I'm testing it.. but it's to early to judge it's efficacity. I also found a soap wich combine sulfur AND salicylic acidhere(and here). I read many post on this forum and others saying salicylic acid is very effective against acne and folliculitis so.. I bought this soap too : its ingredients work insynergy !

@jcbdigger365 :I also knew your condition, Courage ! Did you test the sulfur and salicylic soap ? With Benzoyle Peroxyd, i think you will be able to greatly improve your skin. However, don't use to much oily ingredients like vaseline. Use asimple moisturizer (I'm using Embryolisse :shea butter, beeswax, aloe vera and soy proteins). I sometimes add tea tree essential oil (antibacterian) to the moisturizer.

I also read the story of a boy whocured its folliculitis : he also said than there is a link between this disease and sugar bloog (glycemia) :did you notice this link as well ? If yes, try to adopt a low carb diet (low glycemic index diet).

Dsophobe, i havent tried any of those yet. I just picked up some Nizoral to have a go with tonight and the next week. I know what you mean with the Vaseline being oily but its soothes my skin so much Im going to try and fine tune it for another week with Nizoral and see what results I have. I think there is a fine balance between not dehydrating skin to much and killing the Pustules. Im going to try washing morning and night with Nizoral but not for too long 20-30 seconds on face then moisturise and Vaseline as my moisture barrier is so damaged. I feel if I dont have success with this over the next few weeks I will try the BP route, Im working away now until the 14th Aug so I cant get my hands on anything else yet. Diet doesnt seem to effect me I was Keto for a year when I was training for a competition it had no impact on the pustules I think Ive have these for nearly 10 years now its ridiculous! So il give it until the 14th if I dont see improve il do the BP route. Il keep you posted if I have any significant changes.

@Dsophobe: You should not use a product with shea butter, because it is a triglyceride (Source: Wikipedia) and therefore it will make your folliculitis grow... Also, beeswax sometimes contains fatty acid which will also make your folliculitis grow...
I recommend to read that website thoroughly...

@jcbdigger365 why not trying sulfur soap in the same time ? It's cheap, and sulfur is also anti-fungal (we are not sur if our disease is bacterial or fungal..) :)

@Maicon : thanks, I will check the moisturizers recommended by the website.
But I wonder one thing : if my folliculitis is a fungal problem, is it normal that antibiotherapy had an effect ? And why Benzoyle Peroxyde is working for many people whereas it isnt antfungal ? (for example, doxcycline worked several weeks for me even if its effect decreased with time and the probleme was exarbeted when i stopped it.. if it was fungal, there should have been no effect even at beginiing no?)

Just an update... i tried Sulfur cream and soap for about a week .. first 4 days, it did dry up the pustules and I was 90% clear.. on the 5th day, pustules slowly showed up, still applied Sulfur soap and cream but on the 6th day, it got worse! It was everywhere!!!

Just today, I consulted a Doctor who's a friend and was told that my zits were definitely Bacterial/Stap Aureus and told me to try using Bactroban ointment twice a day.. What I do before applying the ointment, I wash my face with Organic aloe vera facial wash then clean the affected area with Saline solution using cotton tips.

I will give an update in a few days.. So far I notice some of the pustules subsided but still tiny bumps showed up but maintained its size.

Here's how it looks like today....20180805_221957.thumb.jpg.ece3f2378b8ab8b05cd34a3275a80da5.jpg

And for my diet...no sweets, less carbs(rice/bread) and meat(pork/chicken/fish), more on Veggies and low sugar fruits. For my supplements, I am taking Zinc(for almost 2 weeks now..which I noticed made my less oily) together with Vitamin D3...

I will definitely try Sulfur soap also I cant buy at at the moment as I™m on an oil rig for until the 14th :(
lazy I can™t help but notice you™re skin looks greasy also with the same condition, I just wonder if your moisture barrier is severely damaged as well and therefore open to bacterial infection, I had great skin as a teenager but I think damaged it by being in the sun too much and it™s struggles to protect itself now. I envy those people with perfect skin! I woke up this morning and although I have a this pustules my overall tone looks better from a thin layer of Vaseline. I have no doubt it will come back though it always does!

Also I just want to check is sulphur soap more for bacterial than fungal acne? Which brand do you recommend, any? I live in the UK

@Lazy : strange, because sulfur is good againts bacteria... did you try benzoyle peroxyde or tea tree oil ? And did you a bacteriological test in a laboratory ? My dermato also thought it was staph but any test found an anormal bacteria !

@jcbdigger365 : I never read that Selenium Sulfide was a recommended product like pure sulfur...

Sulfur is antibacterian AND antifungal.. : people use it against Acne, Dandruff, Tinea Versicolor, bugs etc.

So i tried the sulfur soap and de la cruz sulfur ointment for 10 days, and i still wasnt getting totally cleared up. My pustules were very small but i could feel those uncomfortable bumps still trying to break through. I did read that the bacteria eventually creates resistance against the sulfur.

I have now switched over and i purchased some 5% benzoyl peroxide wash & gel (acnecide brand in uk) to use in the morning and night and i must say my skin feels much better and dont feel it is drying my skin out too much. So so far soo good. Afew bumps but looking much clearer. Apparently, bacteria cannot create resistance against bp.

Once these small tubes finish i will purchase the max strength 10% bp from the US as 10% strength is not sold in Europe anymore due to rights issues or something. Oxy is my next product to try and hopefully the last. You apply a small amount whilst in the shower and rinse off.

Its had some great reviews on amazon:

I will update again in a few weeks time.

Well as the day has progressed I have accumulated about 4 pustules great! Whats interesting is I dont get acne on my forehead and I dont moisturiser that ever. Have any of you tried not moisturising? Im concerned though as my mouth area is already super dry, Im tempted to try though as it cant get much worse!

No purging with bp in my case.

If u had improvement with antibiotics then its bacterial in some way. That is why BP works for me.

Yes I have also tried BP gel 5% and Differin a year ago when my 2nd dermatologist told me to stop taking antibiotics but my skin got so irritated after every use and still new pustules would show up on other areas.. so I stopped and started changing my diet.. also tried Tea Tree Oil waaay back 2016, I had a burning sensation and my skin got red. And YES my I did have a culture test on my pustules last year twice 2 months apart and got the same results, the name of the bacteria found was K. Pneumoniae.. that's when I started alllllll thooose shitty antibiotics which seemed to control my pustules but every time my Derm lowered down my dosage, pustules slowly returned..

Wow that sounds great! I haven't tried using BP wash though. Just the 5% gel but didn't see any improvement with my skin so I eventually stopped. Would you mind showing some before and after photos?

Update on the Bactroban ointment.. on my 2nd day but decided to stop using it because I could not take the stinging/burning sensation everytime I apply it to my putules. Still new pustules showed up and multipled even more! This is just soooo confusing!

@donpizdol : very good initiativ ! Butone question is missing: "how and when did this disease occured?" For example, many people trigger skin problems after an emotional shock or stress period (and this is very often the case with leaky gut or dysbiosis problems) : it's my case, all my skin disease can after a depression.

Another question could be: do you notice any changes in your folliculitis depending onyour diet?We are several people to notice than sugar or dairy products increase folliculitis.
