I agree that variety with diet is a good idea, and juicing is no exception. To really get the full benefits, you should use the widest range of vegetables you can. Having said that, we have to practical. Not all vegetables juice well or are palatable, or are readily available. Some are more difficult to wash and cut than others, So certain favourites will emerge in our juicing recipes.

I haven't heard of juicing creating allergies. It seems counter intuitive to me that eating three carrots a day, for example, would lead to an allergy to carrots. It doesn't seem like a behaviour likely to lie outside of the body's operating tolerance.

But, as I've always said, everyone should monitor their own individual response. What I've posted on here are guidelines based on my experience. You should always seek to find the safe and beneficial level for you.

Thanks for that insight - makes sense. I'll report back in a few weeks with progress!

Thanks for the response to darkdivine's question! I was wondering the same when the question was raised. I think your point about variety in general is a great one, but I also find that my access to organic veggies is limited (and I too prefer organic) and therefore I tend to use the same recipe more often than not. I did some searching online for the answer to the question re: allergies and didnt find much scientifically substantiated info.

My diet is very varied and healthy. I have been using pretty much the same juicing recipe for almost 30 days now (with some slight variations here and there) and have noticed no ill effects from this.

Incidentally, now I've moved house from London into the countryside, I've started to have a weekly vegetable box delivered from a local farm. This is organic, certified by the Soil Association, and has travelled about three miles from the field to my juicer! Obviously, not everything is available locally -some veggies don't grow in England- but it is an excellent way of getting quality local produce and often the box includes items which I normally wouldn't select in a supermarket.

I would recommend that everyone investigates the possibility of sourcing their vegetables this way. Not only are you supporting local business, but the veggies are fresher, it is less harmful to the environment, and having them delivered means that you always have produce at home for juicing. In London I was having to visit the supermarket every day!

Obviously not everyone lives near a farm, but even in urban areas this type of service is often available, so don't think that you automatically have to buy from Asda or Sainsburys (or Walmart, for those in the US).

Hello again WingedSerpent! I have been on your regime for 1 month, and my oil production has stopped completely! I have several pictures in my gallery with my acne, but even though my acne keeps showing up at it's usual pace, my oil gone! It's been gone for a week. I can't thank you enough :). Now I can only hope that less acne will follow suit for the next two or so months. Thanks so much for your information and keep us posted!! ^_^

Hey, I was wondering what became of you! That's great news about the oil production. To stop new lesions forming one has to reduce oiliness. Any treatment regime that doesn't address this cannot work. I think in your case it is definitely a two stage process: eradicate oil production so that the incidence of new lesions tapers off, and gradual healing of the skin.

If you can maintain oil-free skin then you are well on your way to a clear complexion. But people should recognise that the tapering off of new lesions is not in linear. Sometimes nothing seems to be happening for a long time, and then the skin suddenly begins to look a lot better, increasingly quickly. So hang in there.

Hey guys,

I've been doing this regimen for about a month now. It included B5 500mg, L-Carnitine 500mg, and cutting out dairy/sugar/processed foods. And to no avail it hasn't dented my acne woes. Any advice? seriously thinking this just might be genetic and have to live with it the rest of my life considering my mom still breaks out with acne.

You could try increasing the B5 to 100mg AND make sure it is the time-released variety. Also, I think the vitamin A in the sweet potatoes the OP puts in his fresh vege juices is helping reduce the oil production as well. I always take my B5 and l-Carnetine at the start of the day straight after breakfast. Good luck! Alcohol has sugar-content, too, just so you know.... Makes me break out, for sure....

@l'eremita --- for the first two months of being on this regimen, i gave up coffee because i couldn't drink it without sugar. however, i've started drinking it again every morning, and i have been using a sugar substitute called Stevia Extract that i picked up at trader joe's. I looked into sugar substitutes such as Stevia, Splenda, etc., and they do not cause blood sugar to spike. after an additional two months of using Stevia in my morning coffee, i have noticed no effect whatsoever on my acne --- i.e., still clear.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely be giving stevia a try...I heard you don't need much of it because it's quite sweet.

My update: I juiced for a week and took an impromptu trip to Europe for a month, where I ate whatever I wanted and broke out horribly during the first half, but where my skin turned nice for the second half (sea water and sun always fixes me up). I've been back two weeks and juiced every morning but one since. I'm also taking the l carnitine and vitamin d(took that through the whole trip). I'm still breaking out, and my dermatitis is also flaring back up (it settled considerably while I was away). I tripped up with the diet this week, though. I had cake at a party (in my honor - I had to eat it!) and things have been going downhill in the diet department since then. I eat well, but then I eat chocolate. I need encouragement but I'm not giving up! I did notice the juice is giving me great energy in the morning. I'm typically pretty miserable in the a.m., but the juice is helping.

Any advice? seriously thinking this just might be genetic and have to live with it the rest of my life considering my mom still breaks out with acne.

My acne is genetic too. My father's acne died off but my mom is 40+ and still popping to this very day too. Something HAS to be done for the rest of our lives for us acne folk. It is sad to know this but it's the brutal truth.

I am on the exact same regime so maybe I can help... How is your oil production then? My oil almost completely disappeared a little under a month, but my acne is still popping and blistering everywhere. I am aware that acne can live under the skin for up to 6 weeks undetected, so I have another month or so to go before I see any kind of improvement. Perhpas that will ease your thoughts a bit. Less oil means less of the acne causing bacteria, but it may not KILL the bacteria completely. The body needs time and energy to adjust. Ever try exercising about 1 to 3 times a week?

If my oil has stopped after 10 years of soaking hell, then I am confident that yours will stop soon too. My older brother has almost the same amount of oil as me even though his acne is more severe, but he's going on the same regime too after his Accutane prescription is up because he was completely amazing as to what happened to me. Also, are you on a facial regime? Currently I'm not, and it's a lot easier for me this way because before I couldn't tell whether or not my oil production was reacting to the topical applications OR from what I'm doing (I'm sorry this video has a girl only but I think she has a somewhat good point to how addicting topical things may be --->

). Also, everyone is different when it comes to how long it takes to flush toxins out of the body.

Honesty, I'd give it a little more extra time :). I don't know how bad your acne is since I only see your scars in your scar gallery, but if you have the ability, time, money, and effort to wait it out for the entire three months then you might get your answer soon. I would hate to stop when I was just a couple of days away from a breakthrough, but I completely understand your concern. Regardless of my acne I still like the vegetable juice but would not deny that some more reading MIGHT be more beneficial to us, just in case. Hang in there and I will hope for the best for you! :D

I'm going to give it probably one more month and getting blood work done to check for my cortisol levels. Still haven't tried palmetto extract and and such.. As far as my oil production. I am 100% sure oil has everything to do with my acne. If the oil is gone, so is the acne. Before all this my skin was pristine clear and people commented about how nice my skin looked, so it's very natural to feel pretty damn depressed about this situation. Thanks for the motivation TreatAcne. All my brothers suffer from acne too, but they all took damn accutane that cleared them up.

Hi everyone, I am a fifty year old male and had just about come to terms with the fact I would have to tolerate acne forever. About 12 weeks ago I had a massive breakout of really painful cysts that came from nowhere. My skin had not been this bad for years, in fact I would go as far as to say it had never been this bad since my teenage years.

Anyway I quickly ordered some BP cream and took some time off work, tried the BP cream along with plenty of sleep, lots of water, cut out the alcohol etc etc all to no avail. Then I found this post and realised I had to try a new approach.

So to the point, I have now been following this regime for just over a month and all I can say is WOW, in fact when I look in the mirror every morning all I can say is WOW. I am not acne free but instead of spots all over my face I can now count them on one hand, in fact I have just come down from the bathroom and can say with all honesty I have 2 spots you can call spots and about three slight blemishes. As other posters have said I wish I knew of this twenty years ago, I could have saved myself a lot of misery.

I know all too well how soul destroying acne can be, I have really suffered over the years but PLEASE, PLEASE give this a go because it has worked a treat for me.

I have to be honest and say I did slip a few times with the Juice, a bit of laziness on my part, and I do like a glass of wine or two but have still seen amazing results. So to end my friends, give this a go, you have nothing to lose and a spot free life to gain.

Winged Serpent I am forever in your debt, Thank YOU.

Hahaha, I LOVE your enthusiasm! And that last part made me laugh XD... because so did my male cousins and friends too!! On top of my older brother, they rest are all clear the prescription way. No, please stick to the logical and more healthy alternatives to accutane, and keep an eye on your bro's because they'll probably suffer long term effects. In fact, after months off accutane it's likely your acne will come back worse than before... please don't risk being that person! I'd hate to know of anything bad happening to you or other people here :(...

If you've seen no reduction in oil then I would advise increasing b5 and carnitine upto a max of 1000mg daily. Take in two doses.

Ok. It's been over 3 months since I began.

Followed the regime to the letter. Absolutely no sugar. No cakes. Chocolate. Spoonfuls of sugar. Sweets. Dessert Etc (except naturally in food - and even then I rarely use anything over 2/3 grams of sugar in it and I prepare everything fresh - not ready meals or anything so the natural sugar is in veg etc). Juice every day. Taken 500mg of b5 and l carnitine.

I have only drunk water except when I've had the odd alcoholic drink and always have vodka and diet coke/diet lemonade which contains no sugar.

I've even stopped eating fruit for the last few weeks.

Have seen no significant improvement. Except that spots heal faster. I've never had really really bad acne but between 3-10 spots regularly on my face with regular larger ones which I would call cystic - usually once every few weeks.

Last week decided to up the dose to 1000mg for each and I am getting bad stomach pains and now today diahrea. In general I feel pretty lousy.

I just don't know what to do.

I'm pretty gutted as I've put everything in to this.

I also keep reading stories from people who have experienced bigger problems from using b5 long term so am unsure what to do now.

Any guidance appreciated.

On a side note anyone wanting to lose weight - do this. I've lost loads. To the point people are constantly telling me they are worried about me as I'm getting very thin. :/

Hi Ruibinbai,

When you say, to the letter, do you mean that you were taking time-released B5 and the L-Carnitine together after eating? As well as the daily juicing (with an emphasis on Vit A-rich sweet potatoes)? Are you taking any other multi-vitamin or other hits/supps which could be negating the effect of the B5/L-Carnitine? I found multi-vits, additional zinc & additional magnesium not a good combo with this regime for me.

I had good initial results taking 1000mg time-released B5 with 500mg Carnitine each morning after breakfast. But I did/do still eat some sugar a couple of times a week and I noticed I had a bit of increased oiliness after 8 really good weeks and a few small spots (not as bad as before though and I guess it could have been the lower layers of my epidermis finally making it's way to the surface, who knows?!). Anyway, I decided to add 7500iu Vitamin A to the morning B5/L-Carnitine about two weeks ago and Vitamin D (Vit A can deplete Vit D) in the afternoon and I have noticed another significant improvement. I'm hoping to reduce all of these supplements to the absolute minimum effective amount after a few months. Ideally:

  • 2500iu Vit A;
  • 500mg B5;
  • 500mg L-Carnitine;
  • 2000iu Vit D

I don't juice but I do very well. I'm trying to lose weight and am finding that the L-Caritine is helpful for that as well as feeling energised in general. You might need to increase your fats/carbs intake if you're losing too much weight, I guess.

I took Zinc for a few weeks but it made me moody and irritable, so I cut that out after a week or two. (I've suspected that Zinc has that effect on me before...weird).

I hope there's something here that you haven't tried that could help. But if it hasn't, don't give up hope of finding the right combination. After seeing such awesome results for myself just from taking a particular combination of vitamins and supplements, I'm convinced that finding the right recipe is the key. Luckily for me, my acne origins seem to have a similar pathogenesis as the OP, WingedSerpent. If I were you, and this combo doesn't work, I'd write a list of all the different vitamins and supplements that seem to have worked for others and try them one by one and see what seems to help/hinder/neutral effect. And also in different combinations, taking note of which hits/supps are supposed to work in concert together. Also, I'd steer well clear of any mega-dosing, as WingedSerpent says, it's totally counter intuitive.

Good luck!

Thanks for your response.

Yes I have been using time release b5 and l cart with meals. And juicing everyday always using sweet potato cucumber bell pepper and then usually something else like courgettes.

What you say about other vitamins may be a cause. The day I upped the dose of b5 to 1000mg I also added a daily zinc but after 4/5 days I noticed the stomach pain and on Saturday I was in absolute agony after taking them. I assumed the zinc was the problem so stopped taking it right away. However since then I have still had stomach pain when I take the b5 and l cart but the pain has been less intense! Do you think it could be the remnants of the zinc still in my system that is causing it? as I didn't have any problems while on the 500mg b5/l cart.

I will persevere for a few more days with the pain to see if it improves.

I must say since upping the b5 dose there has been a little improvement in my skin.

Here goes again.

Thank you xxxx

From what I've read, amino acids are best taken and absorbed on an empty stomach in between meals. Taken with food, the protein from your meal can hinder the absorption of the specific amino acid you are attempting to use therapeutically (as in, you're probably absorbing less of it than you would with an empty stomach).

I also have combined the info in this thread and the info from the Dr.Dach b5+carnitine article with the info from this thread: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php/topic/309916-battle-with-severe-acne-won-after-10-years/ as well as the info from these articles:

http://elqalatawy.hubpages.com/hub/Acne-Cure-Guarantee

http://elqalatawy.hubpages.com/hub/Try-The-New-Acne-Cure---Experimented-For-Years

I noticed some slight change while doing only the B5+ carnitine, but I was still getting greasy in the forehead area by about mid day, even after doubling the doses. Now I am starting to notice some real change after only a few days of adding the L-Cysteine to the mix.

There are so many different results on the internet of either b5+carnitine OR b5+cysteine, but I couldn't really find anything that talked about using BOTH + b5...So I figure why not combine them and boost my chances of results, seeing as some people are getting results from either of the combinations...All three supplements are part of the Coenzyme A puzzle so giving it 3 'building blocks' rather than 2 seems logical.

Maybe the people getting results without using cysteine are already getting enough of it through their diets, I don't know. But I recommended adding it to the mix for people following this thread who have not seen much/any progress. I am noticing a difference after only days of adding it in.

Still getting pain in my stomach and diahrea. And I feel really shit :(

I wonder if it's the double dose of the l carnitine? Maybe tomorrow I'll try 2 b5s and 1 l cart

This is really getting me down now.

Feel like crying.

Basically in ruibinbai road right now, however it's only been a month and i just upped the dosage to 1000mg for both b5 and carnatine. I broke out pretty bad the last couple of days, so i'm going to give it one more week. This regimen feels like it's failing.

Wingedserpent did say give it 3 months though. I think It might work at the 1000mg dose but I just can't cope with the stomach pain it's giving me. If its not painful for you keep at it for a couple more months before you ditch it.

I'm sorry to hear that you've havent had success.

No treatment plan should ever cause pain or sickness. I would advise ceasing supplementation completely, since if supplements have indeed caused your problems then the dosage for you is clearly too high and has crossed the line into megadosing.

The side effects of excess supplementation do not appear overnight, but are the result of a build up. It is therefore unlikely that your problems are related to zinc, unless you were taking huge doses. My advice is to stop supplements, keep juicing, let your body readjust, get well. Then take a considered and dispassionate approach to what else you might want to introduce into the mix based upon others' experience and suggestions on here, in the ongoing attempt to find a tailored solution for you. This might involve probiotics or cysteine, for example. I'm afraid that the nature of trying to self-heal is that it is often a trial and error process; some treatments will not be well tolerated, or indeed, effective for everyone. But what may work for you, may be just around the corner.

The fundamental principal of treating adult acne without topicals is that whatever you try, you must give it time. I salute you for reaching the three month period without quitting. That fact alone places you in the top percentage of people most likely to heal their skin.

Read this thread and thought I'd give it a go:

  • Ive started taking the tablets youve suggested
  • I've bought a juicer and am having a veggie smoothie daily
  • I've tried to reduce my sugar intake
  • I'm drinking more water

I'll let you know how it goes! I've been suffering with my skin since I was 11 - 13 years (I'm 24) I'm on the waiting list to see a Dermatiologist again but there is a 20 week minumum waiting list. I'd rather try clear my skin naturally if I can rather than rely on raccutane!

Great, welcome aboard. I hope you see significant benefit.

You've taken a great step forward by tackling the problem head on and not waiting for the dermatologist to help. Over the years I saw some of the best dermatologists in the country. When I was your age, there was no Internet, so it was impossible as a layman to learn as much about acne and possible treatments as it is today. One was reliant on 'experts' for information. These days, it is possible to educate oneself upto the level of these 'experts' by diligent and persistent research online. I can honestly say that by my mid thirties I knew as much about acne as any Harley Street specialist. I am convinced that the way forward for most people who have suffered for decades with acne is to take control of their treatment plan themselves. That's not to say that success is assured, but your chances are maximised.

Thank you for your support and advice. It's really appreciated. I have stopped taking the supplements today and as of about an hour ago the pain has diminished considerably. It's frustrating that this hasn't been the result I wanted but I will persevere with trying to find a solution. I will continue juicing and staying off the sugar.

Just a quick question - you said you still enjoy alcohol? What do you drink. I've gone for vodka and diet lemonade/coke as I believe this is a sugar free option. But in moderation of course. also how much do you watch the sugar that consume naturally in food?

Good luck to everyone else trying this method I hope it works for you xx
