Hey man, I have tried everything just like you, accutane worked for me but it always comes back after a few months. So I just basically eat healthy, drink lots of water and use proactive. Whenever I have terrible hormonal breakout that I cant control, I have to go on a strictly 3 days diet which I really hate, but works every time. I use Dr. Perricone's diet regimen (you can get a used book for a few bucks on amazon). The foods are terrible, especially after you eat them for 3 days straight, but all of my acne is gone after the third day. I dont know if it'll work for you but it's worth a try. An important thing is that you have to strictly follow the instruction, you can not eat anything other than what's in the book. One more very important thing that keeps my skin clear is that I get rid of all the dead skin cells which can cause breakouts every week with PMD. Hope this helps !

That's basically the diet I am following indefininitely. You get used to eating that way, I promise! Have you ever tried doing the diet for a couple weeks in a row?

3 days was a very long time for me already, I don't think I could eat those anti inflammatory foods any longer than that. Surprisingly, most of my acnes are gone after 3 days, and I have to say I get pretty bad cystic acne. There is no permanent solution to my acne so I guess I have to live with it. I just use proactiv everyday and get microdermabrasion every week myself. Your skin definitely improved alot after 6 days, are u considering laser for your scar?

Yes, definitely, but not until it clears up more. Also, I'm considering these eating habits my permanent skin solution, if it works anyway. Small price to pay for getting my life back!! :)

Hey everyone-

I am 26 yrs old and have struggled, like all of you, with moderate/severe cystic and general inflammed acne for the past 13 years or so. After tons of failed chemical/topical treatments I have been seeking a natural alternative. In march I read The Clear Skin Diet and as a result, overhauled my diet tremendously. Although I have been eating much cleaner (though havent entirely cut sugar out) and it has made somewhat of a difference, it has not been enough. As of today, which will also be my first day of juicing, I have 16 active lesions on my face, a few of which are cysts.

I have purchased a juicer as well as a bulk of vegertables from BJs. I used the juicer for the first time today and made the exact same recipe as the wingedserpent. It was delicious!! I have been on B5 and L-Carnitine as of last week (I also started a probiotic last week). As of today I am committing 100% to cutting out sugar, and already drink approximately 3 liters of water per day. I excercise 3x per week, will continue to eat a healthy diet (consisting mainly of vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, lots of omega 3 and fiber) and will PRAY that adding the juicing and supplementation, and cutting the sugar will finally, for once and for all, be the end to this agonizing affliction.

Thank you wingedserpent for sharing your experience and I hope it goes as well for me as it did for you!!

I have a question for the OP or anyone else, didn't see this answered anywhere or maybe I missed it:

I've been drinking the juice on an empty stomach first thing in the AM, but was wondering how long I should wait before eating breakfast afterwards... I usually eat oatmeal or cereal but don't want to dump food on top of the juice too soon if it could dampen the absorption effects of the juice...

Thanks!

Phew! Finally moved house! What a nightmare. But it's great to be out in the beautiful countryside of the West Country after years in grimy London. Had my first pint of strong local cider the other night -yes, I could get quite used to this!

Apologies to those who sent messages and didn't get replies. I will endeavour to answer them shortly.

Stephanieroses -the juice is the main part of my breakfast since I get up early and I just don't feel like eating at that time of the morning. Anything I eat is a couple of hours later. Juice is absorbed very quickly, however. You could probably eat a big breakfast 30 mins later.

Congrats on your move! It sounds like you're embarking on a whole new adventure! I myself live in grimy NYC, so I can understand the excitement of getting out of the city. And thanks so much for the reply :) I will wait at least 30 mins before eating. I am a week and a half in as of today and I can see my skin starting to take on a bit of a glow! Very excited and extraodinarily hopeful this will work for me.

I sent you a PM with the above question as well as wondering what your skincare routine is... I wasn't sure when you'd be back or able to respond, so apologies for the redundancy... but I am still curious to know what topicals you use, whenever you get a chance! Thanks again!

I think I've waited long enough to comment since I've been on this regimen for a month (and 2 days) now.

Just a little background on me:

38 year old female battling moderate for the most part non-cyctic acne since I was 12. My problem areas are face (mostly jawline, cheeks and chin), chest, neck, back, shoulders, upper arms, and along my hairline. I have tried a ridiculous myriad of topical products but have only tried tetracycline way back in the day as far as oral meds go. The only thing that has worked to any degree is Dan Kern's regimen. When I am absolutely faithful, I can keep my face and neck about 80% clear, which has been liveable. But any time I falter or try to back off on it, the acne is back with a vengence.

You would never catch me wearing any type of clothing that would show any of the aforementioned areas. Shirts always have high collars because I can't trust the back of my neck to be clear. V-necks - not an option. Sleeveless = never. I have worn hot clothing in the summer many, many times because of lesions on my neck that I couldn't stand to show. By the way, I am a pretty pale-skinned person so every lesion stands out. For the most part, I have been able to successfully hide the true extent of my acne with clothes, lots of BP and make-up. As an aside, I am not a big make-up person and prefer a very light amount of powder concealer and lip gloss, if that.

My diet has historically been, well....horrible. I won't deny it. Lots of sugar, caffeine, dairy, virtually no fruits or veggies to speak of. Water intake....spotty. Did (do) take a multi-vitamin, mostly to keep my mom off my back, LOL. And I won't lie, I have always pretty much believed that diet was not the cause of my problems (I know, duh). I did give up coffee a few months ago because it was giving me gastric ulcers.

Anyhow, I kind of stumbled upon wingedserpent's topic, and I'm not sure why. I almost never read topics that tout somebody's personal (usually B.S.) unproven remedy for acne but I was intrigued by the number of responses so I had a peek. What he was saying was making sense to me, so i decided what the hell.

(As an aside note, I am following his regimen exactly, although I think I could do better in the water department. That said, besides juice, the only other liquid I consume besides the vegetable juice is water.)

I cut out the sugar and started the juicing Monday July 2nd. Started juicing with carrots, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, celery...then started adding in squash, beets, and broccoli. At first, I wasn't super keen on the juice so I added an apple for flavor....but I will comment more on that a little later. I started the L-carnitine and B-5 about 1 week later. I did cut out almost all dairy along with the sugar. Like wingedserpent, I don't go to extremes with the sugar deal, but I don't eat candy, cookies, sugary drinks, or milk chocolate. I have cheated with a very small amount of ice cream a couple times...maybe for a total of 2 scoops.

-Within 2-3 days I noticed a huge difference in my energy and mood. I knew right away that regardless of what this regimen does for my skin, juicing and cutting out sugar is going to something I keep doing forever. Before, I was so not a morning person....crabby in the morning and then my energy would kick in later, like after about noon. Irritability and anxiousness have always plagued me throughout life. Stress makes all of those things much worse. After starting juicing and cutting out sugar, I noticed I had much more energy in the morning first off. I'm never going to be a great morning person, but the juice really jump-started my day (by the way, I drink 8 oz in the morning and 8 oz in the evening). What it did for my mood though was what was really remarkable. It has just smoothed over my emotions so that I am not nearly as irritable or anxious. My co-workers even commented about the change.

-The other thing I noticed almost immediately was my skin becoming softer all over.

-My taste buds started to change within a week. Suddenly adding apples to the juice was too sweet and I only wanted the veggies in it. Food that I didn't care for before (like whole grain bread) started tasting really good. Food tastes differently to me now that I'm not consuming so much sugar....I can appreciate the different flavors in foods much more now.

-Weight started literally falling off. I wasn't a big person to start with (5'4", 134 lbs) but today I'm 124 lbs and didn't even realize what was happening until I needed to tighten my belt. That has been a nice side-effect without any extra effort at all.

-OK, what you're all wondering about, my acne. Skin started smoothing out almost immediately. Old acne has left some skin, especially my neck, with some bumps. Those started regressing. When I started I would say I probably had about a dozen or so active lesions. Since starting I have had 1 small pimple on my face (gone), 1 small pimple on my chest (gone), 1 small pimple on one upper arm (gone), 2 on my neck (1 gone) and maybe 3 on my back (all gone). The ones on my hairline have not been cropping up. The zits are different than they used to be though. They're not as angry, and resolve much faster it seems. In fact, this morning I woke up with 1 pimple on my neck and I was a little pissed because it has been about 2 weeks with no neck lesions (and they are the ones I despise the most). Yesterday I touched my face with my fingertips while talking to someone and the smoothness of my skin surprised me. I've received compliments from family about how nice my skin looks. I am not sure if my skin is less oily yet. But best of all, last weekend I wore a V-neck t-shirt and enjoyed the feeling of the sun and wind on my neck, chest, and upper back for the first time in I don't know how long. That was huge for me. I don't think about my skin nearly as much either, worrying about whether a zit will pop up where everybody can see it.

I will keep adding more updates, but for now I need to go make some juice!

Ann

I've heard that juicing with non-organic fruit/veggies can mean increasing exposure to pesticides. For those on this regimen, are you guys buying more organic food or are you just trying to wash fruit more thoroughly. I was really excited about trying juicing but that I read about this and I'm a bit concerned.

Well, if you're in NYC, we're now about 170 miles closer together. Give or take 3000 miles!

I've sent you a PM about topicals, hope this is of interest.

There's no reason to worry about this. All you need do is buy a vegetable brush and scrub the vegetables well.

Hi Wingedserpent,

How long did it take before your oily skin subsided?

As I recall (this is more than 4 years ago now), reductions in oil happened quickly for me. I think it was one of the first skin effects I noticed.

Some people haven't seen any reduction though after some weeks, and for them I'd suggest increasing B5 and L carnitine by 50%, and then upto double if no results after that. Remember, the aim is to take the minimum amount of supplements necessary to get results.

I am going to give this a try. I have been on basically every prescription acne medication short of accutane as well as Dan's Regimen, Proactiv, etc. At 25, it is clearly not going to just go away. I will report back in 12 weeks with my results.

Are there any other success stories here from people who stuck with it? I see a few throughout the thread but not many.

I'm at my wits end with this acne and I am willing to give this a fair shake. I have had acne for about 10-11 years now. I've done different antibiotics and topicals over the years with temporary results. I have been on benzoyl peroxide (Dan's regimine) for about 7.5 years now and it's never worked 100%. I'd say I got around 70% effectiveness from it but was still never really great and I don't want to put harsh chemicals on my skin anymore. Tried to stop cold turkey about 4 years ago but had the worst breakout of my life so went back on it. About 3 months ago as an experiment I quit applying BP to my jaw area while still applying it my forehead and chin areas. I was okay for 2 months and then suddenly started getting cysts on my jawline area below my ears on both sides of my face. So, my acne problem is still very much alive. Additionally, I am taking a stand and refusing to go back to applying BP on my jawline regardless of how bad the acne gets.

I cut out dairy 95% a couple years ago - no milk (use almond milk instead) and cheese very sparingly. I have yogurt a few times per week.

I cut out wheat/gluten 95% about a year ago - I don't eat bread except when I absolutely have to and avoid foods with gluten in them

I cut out processed foods probably about 70% - I try to stick to whole foods for the most part - I usually eat things like organic free-range chicken, whole fruits, veggies, brown rice, wild rice, eggs etc. I have cut out fast food, pizza and most anything that obviously looks unhealthy.

One of the fews things left that I can think of is that I am not getting enough nutrients from vegetables and I admit I don't eat nearly enough of them. This is the reason I am strongly considering this regimine. I want to fix this broken body.

Hi darkdivine :) I am about 3 weeks in on my trial of this method and I can say with total certainty that although I'm not completely clear yet, I am seeing vast improvements! I would definitely encourage you to give this a 3 month trial as winged suggests in his original post. What do you have to lose? (only your acne!) I think there is a lot to be said about the nutrition helping to heal the skin. I also think cutting out sugar has been KEY for me. Prior to juicing I was also on a very healthy diet and seeing some, but not stellar results.

My acne has gone from cystic and relatively severe to much more mild and not at all cystic in just over 3 weeks. Spots that pop up heal much faster, and overall I'm having less widespread breakouts. I'm really hopeful and excited to see where I'll be in 3 months! No BP!

I totally agree that the following combination is a winner:

  • B5 (time-released)
  • L-Carnetine
  • No Sugar
  • Increased vitamins (especially Vitamin A in sweet potato).

I know when I've eaten too much refined sugar, I get some spots. Alcohol included. But this regime has been a godsend for me. Wish I'd known about it twenty years ago! Fortunately, I'm not a big drinker at all and I'm learning to cut back on refined sugars. I've also started taking Vitamin A, D, C, Zinc and Magnesium because I don't want to do the juicing, although I do have a fairly good diet with fresh fruit and veges. So, there you have it! It's been 9 weeks so far and I'm very pleased with the outcome. Will continue to report back to this thread about once a month for now.

Don't fruits have a lot of sugar? This is always something that has confused me. On the one hand, some people say to eat a lot of fruit because it's good for you. On the other hand, others say to use moderation because fruits have a lot of sugar which can aggravate acne.

Okay - you've convinced me. I just ordered a juicer and I can't wait to get started on this. Is it hard to get used to the taste of the juice? Vegetables aren't the tastiest things in the world to me. Also, when you say cutting sugar was key for you - do you mean anything that has sugar in it? Or just stuff that's obviously loaded with sugar such as donuts, candy, confections, etc. I very rarely eat that stuff now but I do eat things that have some added sugar in them.

great post! i would love to give this a try but i don't have money to buy a juicer right now. aside from that i just wanted to say that i've been trying to treat my acne from within by using a few supplements and it doesn't seem to keep me from breaking out, although it does make my skin look a bit better.

after reading this i am reminded of the thread here that is about probiotics. people seem to be having success with those and i'm wondering if combining it with your regimen would be good.

also, i like your words in your "interests" there^^^ :)

That's what I'm thinking of doing, too. Cleaning up my diet and introducing probiotics!

Hello again WingedSerpent! I have been on your regime for 1 month, and my oil production has stopped completely! I have several pictures in my gallery with my acne, but even though my acne keeps showing up at it's usual pace, my oil gone! It's been gone for a week. I can't thank you enough :). Now I can only hope that less acne will follow suit for the next two or so months. Thanks so much for your information and keep us posted!! ^_^

Don't fruits have a lot of sugar? This is always something that has confused me. On the one hand, some people say to eat a lot of fruit because it's good for you. On the other hand, others say to use moderation because fruits have a lot of sugar which can aggravate acne.

I think actual fruit pieces in moderation is fine because it is absorbed with the fibre, but too much fruit juice is not so good. That's why this method utilises vegetable juice, and not so much fruit juice, per se.

Very informative. I've been thinking of getting a blender a long time ago but reading your story influenced me to check on our family's old juicer first to check if it's still working. Thanks for sharing, this made me think about the next time I would be indulging on simple sugars; when in fact i should be consuming more of the complex carbohydrates. :)

Hi darkdivine smile.png I am about 3 weeks in on my trial of this method and I can say with total certainty that although I'm not completely clear yet, I am seeing vast improvements!

No BP!

The juice I make is composed of: 4 medium/large carrots, 1 vine tomato, 1/2 large cucumber, 1 red bell pepper, 2 stalks of celery. This makes about 20oz (1 pt) an because of the carrots and pepper is relatively mild and sweet tasting. The more greens you put in ( kale, spinach) the more bitter it will be. I like veggies so I like the taste! In terms of the sugar, you can't always avoid all sugar but yes definitely anything dessert like and also I do try to avoid as much added sugar as possible. For this I just check labels and anything that has sugar gram in the high teens or twenties or up I avoid! Im almost at 30 days and continue to see greatimprovements!! Plus the added benefit of losing some extra fat :)

Cool - thanks for info. I have been juicing for 2 days now and the taste was not bad at all. I have used carrots, celery and cucumber so far and will be adding those that you mention. One additional question I have is that I have been reading about juicing and have read that juicing the same vegetables all the time is bad for you and can make you allergic to those veggies. Is this true? These sites never mention how often you should be rotating your veggies so they are not very helpful.
