Hello all.

Im a 24 year old female from Belgium who have suffered with acne and extremely oily skin for ~10 years (severe for 5 years).

It all started out with the little acne that most teenage girls get. As I became older my skin continued to get oilier and oilier and more and more zits would pop up. From age 14 to 16 it was managable, it was pretty easy to hide with some foundation so the acne itself didn't bother me much. When I hit 17 my acne progressed to my cheeks (before it had only been on my chin and forehead), heard other girls talk about how birth-control would clear it up, obviously it didn't work for me. So that was the first "medication" I tried to battle this hell, a "true hell" that would only get worse!

I was 18 years old when I first visited a dermatologist. After trying various cleansers and other topical solutions without much effect I was looking forward to get the "cure" (I didn't have deep insigt into acne/treatments, didn't know about acne.org etc.) so I was naive! eusa_liar.gif I got put on Differin and saw about 30% improvement (maybe a little more, this is almost 7years ago) but it made my skin very red and angry looking and it was hard to hide with makeup (imagine having differin/moisturaizer and a hell lot of makeup on for you girls). Stuck with differin for around 7 months and quit it because it was way to harsh for my skin and the results didn't please me either.

19 years old now and my skin was really, really bad. My acne on my cheeks and forehead also began to leave small scars around this time - so I was eager to find a treatment that worked. I was put on oral antibiotics along with clindymacin gel(spelled?) and I saw minor improvements. Later i quit the gel and just went with the antibiotics, but the results were very minor. After 6 months i stopped taking the antibiotics because the results where non existent. Went on differin and antibiotic gel (spot treatment) again + birthcontrol and somehow got a hold on some of my acne.

20 years and still doing Differin and gel and went with that regimen for 1½ years, but the Differin was really harsh, but I carried on. My acne really got hold of my life at this point and I was really, really close to get kicked out of school because I almost never showed up. When I hit 22 I quit Differin and the antibotic gel because i wanted to combat things the holistic way. Tried different diets etc. with some improvement, but at this point I hadn't been clear for 8 years and basically been locking myself in my room for 2 years so I was really depressed and my skin was shit and more oily than ever. I had read about Accutane at this time and made up with myself to try it, but backed out because I read about the bad initial breakout. Went a couple of months with BP and a good cleanser and it worked pretty well for my cheeks and chin, with the forehead still being really bad and being ridden in cysts which would leave scars.

Sorry for writing so much, im really sorry, but I just had to comeout with it all. Im really depressed right now, more than ever. I have been locking myself in for 3 years because of my acne, never had a boyfriend etc. :(

So I got my prescreption for Accutane 1½ month ago, but had to wait until last week to get the pills (some paperwork got messed up and pregnancy test) My dermatologist has me on 20mg every other day for 11 days, then 20mg for 20 days and then 40mg for a month (hope you guys understand!) I'm supossed to do 6 months, but my dermatologist is still thinking about the dose for the last 3 months, he says I'd even do 7 months if he thinks I need it. Honestly I just want my face cleared up so I don't get anymore scarring (forehead is horrible and covered in scars) :( so please work accutane!

I took the first pill this evening with my dinner and a glass of water so lets see how it goes. Sorry for writing so much! :(

I wish you the best of luck! I know exactly how you feel too. It may take a couple months but your skin is going to look amazing by the end!

I really hope it does work for you Eline. Acne does really screw up one's confidence, and no one should have to go through such ordeal...

PS: Don't worry about the post length, it was a good read! smile.png

Thank you Cwr and Fran. :) I too hope that my skin will be good when the course ends and from the resluts I've seen on the site here I believe it will. But one thing I've learned with acne and its treatments - dont expect too much! So we'll se how it goes.

Im gonna take my 2nd pill today and I'll move up to 20mg every day by the 19th.

So far no changes, skin is still very oily.

4 days on Accutane and still no side effects and I'm not really expecting any serious ones until i move up onto 40mg daily. Have a Dermatologist visit coming up on 4. February where he'll tell me what dosage I'm gonna do for the last 3 months.

That sounds great! I'm currently on 40mg (presumably b/c of my weight), and no side effects here as well. 'Hope it'll still go smooth for you! :)

Thanks, Fran and I hope so too. :)

1 week on Accutane and still no side effects to report of. Still early in my treatment so I'll be aiming myself with patience.

Gonna do 20mg everyday from today until February 8 where I'll move onto 40mg. No side effects from the 20mg every other day dose and my dermatologist said that the common side effects (dry lips and skin) would kick in when I began 20mg everyday, so lets see if I wake up with a sandpaper face tomorrow, haha.

Skin wise no change either, face is still very bad. I'll post some pictures once my face gets cleared up to 50% of what it is now, way to self conscious about it atm.

Day 12.

Im so impatient. No changes skin wise and no side effects to report of, not even a little dry lips. I know it's foolish to expect with Accutane, but I just wanna see results nooow!

Hey Eline, I've read a lot of posts on here and found that everybody reacts differently to Accutane. No side effects doesn't mean it's not working. I am on Day 8 with 20mg/day and my face actually became oilier since I started because I was using Dan's regimen before accutane. the BP made my face really dry and Accutane is doing some adjustment I guess. I know my acne will get worse before it gets better, with that in mind, I don't give myself too much pressure. I just take the pill and let it do its job, good or bad. Some people see some effects right away and some people don't see any changes until Month 2. For people see effects right away, things usually get worse first but for people see effects later, things just improve gradually. So don't worry, be more patient :) I think daily dosage matters too. since you are on 10mg and 20mg for the first three weeks, your body is just starting to absorb accutane. give it some time.

I will start 40mg on Feb. 11, which is my second month. Let's face the battle together. Cheer up!

Hm, I think you are right, Whatanate. My body just needs to absorb and get "adapted" to the Accutane before the side effects kick in. Only been on 20 mg/day for 2 days so your point (and what I can read from other users on this site) are good.

And good luck with your course. :)
