Hi there,

Similar to you, I've pretty darn oily skin as well. Tried everything to reduce my oil production but to no avail.

I am thinking of taking long-term low dose Isotretinoin(AKA Accutane) as well, but it's too expensive to get this here in my country.

I'm travelling to Korea in a few months time, so hopefully i could get a cheap supply there. Could you tell me the adress of the clinic that you went to see to get your prescription and how much was it?

Thank You

What do people think is the minimum weekly dosage of accutane to control oil production? I've taken higher dosage courses previously (40mg+/daily), but the acne and oil always comes back.

I'm hoping to take an ultra low dose of accutane to control the sebum and then rely on creams/skin care/lifestyle/diet to control the acne. I'm hoping that 5mg/week will be enough. Do you think I could get away with an even lower dosage.

I'm kind of late on this but wow im so glad I found your post. Due to the fact you got your low dose in Korea. I'm in that same position. Prior to arriving to Korea, I was having moderate breakouts out of no where, however i've been here in Korea for almost 2 months and have been getting the worst breakouts ever. I've been getting painful and nasty zits all over! Everyday I wake up with bad skin. My skin is normally very oily just like yours. It's like your the boy version of me  because everything you mentioned in your post is exactly how my skin is, and your whole dieting thing, I couldn't agree with you more. ANYWAYS, while i'm in Korea I figured I should to go to the dermatologist and get this acne under control! Especially when your in Korea and everyone is all about looks. Takes a toll on you! Well I assumed the doctor would recommend me getting laser treatment but instead he suggested I take oral medications. I was scared cause the first thing that came to mind was Accutane. I was right... He put me on a 10mg Isotretinoin. Hearing all the horror stories freaked me out. Though I just trusted his words, and also doing a lot of research on this site made me feel a little better. Also, seeing that your experience was rather good makes me less apprehensive. Hopefully my oily face stays at bay and my pimples get cured quickly!!! Sorry for the long paragraph! Just had to thank you for this post!

Day 1-4 no new breakouts

Day 5/6-very mild chapped lips, few tiny pimples, and very dry, peeling skin. not pretty at all. My makeup application looks horrible! I hope my oily face subsides soon though.

Hey guys! Just thought I would post a wee update about my low dose accutane regime. I have now been on a low dose for about 1 year, 8 months. Started on 70mg/week dropping to 40mg/week then 30mg/week and am now on about 20mg/week. Basically it has worked brilliantly and kept my acne at bay for pretty much the whole time. No side effects to note except from chapped lips now and again. However due to some personal issues causing me stress I have recently broke out for the first time in about a year and a half. This is annoying but am positive has been caused by stress and hopefully will settle down soon.

Low dose accutane has worked wonders for me not only physically but mentally. Before even when my acne wasn't bad I would be stressing thinking i could break out at any time, but on accutane it puts my mind at rest knowing that even if I do break out, accutane should resolve the issue within days. Will continue the regime and continue to drop dosage until I feel comfortable stopping all together. Any questions about my regime just ask!

Hi Pumpercrib! May I ask some questions?

Was the 70 mg too high or too much at first? Do you think I really need to start at 70 mg per week and just drop the dosage after??? Or is the 20 mg per week already effective enough?

Also, does it really prevent oiliness? Can you now compare your face to someone with 'normal' skin (not oily but not overly dry either)? Thank you and congratulations on your successful low dosage accutane journey! :)

Hi! Sorry for the late reply, not been on in a while. Well I would say it depends what your acne is like to start with? If it's pretty bad or aggressive to start with then you may not see much of a difference for a long time with 20mg/week. If it's fairly light/moderate acne then 20mg/ might be enough to keep it at bay. I must say I'm not a doctor so can't give you conclusive answers, but this is just from my experience. I would say start slightly higher and if you feel it's too much you can always drop down until you get to a level you are comfortable with :). Hope that helps! Let us know how you get on!

I started on 20mg every other day and reacted super quick to it. To the point I have to actually come off it for a week n introduce it even slower. 10mg every other day or even once of twice a week i'm still having problems.

Acne was pretty moderate, large cysts on my neck and shoulder. 1 week on that low dose and my face dried up instantly but went very red and sensitive. Havnt had a pill for 3 days and my skin is still red and flaking BUT the acne is drying up aswell.

Im feeling like i could be a candidate for a ultra low dose course seeing as I am so damn sensitive to it. I normally have very very oily skin and I cant help but think controlling that oil with a small dose is going to be just what i need.

After having finished my Accutane course, my acne slowly came back.
At this time, I took accutane when I got pimples to heal it, but since two weeks I started this low dose regimen, with good results ! It really cleared me
The difficult thing is to find a good balance : too oily is obviously asking for acne, but too dry isn't really good either. Personally, if I have to choose, I prefer to be on the dry "side", because it's usually where you have little to no risk of acne. The flakiness can be controlled with moisturer !

I'm trying 20mg/week, just a 20mg pill one day of the week, I'll keep you updated.

Any new update in 2016 ?? My derma doc advised me to take accutane as a second course, the  previous one was 20mg for 6 months in 2011, and it did clear my skin but I had moderate/ sever hair loss after the course.

My acne has returned back horribly and they localized on my cheeks and chin (somehow I think they are hormonal acne) but I don't want to be on bc pills for my entire life :(

so do you think if I ask my doc to prescribe me 10mg for a year would be better? So I don't face again hair loss as a side effect,,,

I take 1 x 10mg every 4 days. Had moderate hair loss for the first 8 weeks or so   (which did concern me)  which has since stopped. No other side effects at all to speak of. IMO Its a great option for long term acne sufferers. I am done with having children so for me I get checked up by the derm every 6 months at which time I also have a blood test to check liver function etc... I don't tax my liver (not a drinker etc..) so I'm presuming at this dose any strain on my liver would be minimal. I know as I approach the end of my 4th day (due to take my next tablet)  that its time to take another pill as my hair gets greasy and I feel the oil around my hair line 'returning'. I have no doubt that the effects of the drug are not a permanent thing in my case ( I have been on several full blown roacc  courses over the last 20 years which always resulted in my skin reverting back to its original oily pimply state) so I know I'll be taking this forever if I want to keep maintaining the results. To be honest I have no problem with this. My anxiety, mild depression, self esteem and general state of mind has changed completely since being on the roacc. My derm even said it would be my choice (weighing up theoretical risks against the very real benefits it has on my emotional state) as to whether I take the drug long-long-term. I told him I'd fight to him to the death to stay on it  :)

Ive been on a low dose accutanr treatment for about 2 years. Ive been contemplating if i should start a low dose treatment like 20mg a week again. The reason why i stopped before is because of high cholesterol and triglycerides everytime im on the pill but my derm gave me statins to lower them down.I took my last pill 8 months ago and had my bloodtests done yestrday. Cholesterol and triglycerides, ldl are still high. Just high but not alarming. My bloodtests before taking accutane was all normal though. Im just wondering why the lipid profile levels arent returning back to normal even though im 8 months off the pill.

I workout 2x a week and follow a very strict low fat diet, gluten free and dairy free. I eat Chicken and fish. I limit my beef and pork intake. Im not overweight.

Hi all,
This might be long, so, I have been on 20mg/day for the last 7 months, I still have two more months to go.
I had sever acne, w're talking face back chest and even a little bit on the upper part of my arms just around near my shoulders.
I did not get the famous initial breakout that everyone talks about, my acne started to go away gradually.
By the 5 th month I stopped having pimples, haven't had any pimple since.
Side effects for me: dry skin of course and dry lips but nothing is irritating to me as the dry eyes which started around the 5th month.
My eyelids are in bad shape, my opht says it is induced by accutane, she also says it will go away when I stop.
The whole oil gland attack is expected to effect the eye's oil glands. I am very worried, paranoid even I don't know what to do about it.
I am using gel lubricant eye drops, applying hot compress and trying it all.
Considering the low dosage I am also afraid it might come back.
No depression whatsoever, Nothing can be more depressing than acne if you ask me.

Any way, I wish the best of luck to every body.

I had used it (10mg twice a week) for 3 years. It worked very well!
My blood tests were always fine and I had no (or very little) joints pain. Unfortunately I had to quitit because my stomach was really upset: at the beginning I thought (the doctor also suggested that...) I was only stressed but once I quit with accutane I got my stomach-digestion back to normal.

I think it was my body-system getting rid of that poison...

I have been on 10mg per day for 6months in 2018, it works wonder for me but I stopped and acne slowly came back for within 2 months, then I started again on10mg for 1 year and it works perfectly untilrecently I took10mg per week to maintain as per my doctor said (diff doctor, first doctor told me to stay on for 24 months), sadly it breaksme out like crazy and I stopped taking it, before I took this pill my acne on face was very verymild and I took it to clear my body acne that started somehow after my hot spring trip, now my face acne is a complete mess and it is not reacting to any topical treatment. Im thinking if the break out continues Im going for 3rd round šŸ™
