Personally I think any dry skin will eventually come off without the need for scrubbing. The flakes on my face are small and thus there is nothing to really peel so the flakes seem to shed relatively easy. This is what I do with my face: At night, I use a wet wash cloth and press it all around my face, using both sides of the wash cloth and then moisturize afterward. In the morning, when I shower, I do the same thing with a wash cloth and also rinse my face in the water; again - not scrubbing or rubbing. I moisturize after the shower as well. However, sometimes it takes another one or two applications of moisturizer (like 30 minutes later) to get rid of all the residual flakes that reappear.
My scalp was also really flaky and that was significantly reduced by using Neutrogena T-Sal shampoo and reducing shampooing to every other one or two days rather than every day.

Good to know, how your doing it. The less amount of things I can put on my face the better I will give your way a shot and see if it helps. I don't want my hair to dry out while being on the meds, I'm wondering if a t sal shampoo will help that. Right now I am showering and washing my hair every morning. I had read a lot of stories with people loosing their hair. I will cry if I lose any hair, so maybe washing it daily isn the best thing. That way I can keep whatever oil is there, there when it should be.
Well (i don't know how much you know about this) there's arguments and studies out there trying to determine whether it is a good idea to shampoo your hair every day or not. Generally, the experts seem to lean toward every day shampooing being a bad thing for the health of your hair and scalp. Glands in our scalps naturally produce oils and the shampoo strips those oils away, causing the scalp to be drier and the glands to attempt to produce more oil. You may want to do your own research on this (particularly for girls) to see what you think of the switch to less shampooing.
I have very short hair of about half an inch, so my hair is much different than most girls' hair. But in the past, even with using conditioner when I shampoo, my hair has been pretty dry for years. I've also struggled with flaking/dandruff off and on. When I started accutane, the flaking got MUCH worse (like blizzard conditions when I rubbed my head ) and my scalp was very itchy, so I read about and purchased both the Neutrogena T-Gel (for dandruff) and T-Sal (for flaking). The T-Gel didn't seem to work very well for me, and also seems to be some pretty brutal stuff. The T-Sal I found seems to be less brutal and work better to rid the flakes and itchiness, however it was drying out my hair significantly and I knew it wouldn't be good to use it every day. So I started reducing my usage to once every one or two days and my scalp has been much less flaky and my hair has seemed healthier.
I do still rinse my hair with water on those no-shampoo/conditioner days and use conditioner when I use the T-Sal.
Also, since my hair is so short, it is difficult for me to tell if I am losing any because it could easily go down the drain with it being so short. However, I do not notice any shedded hair on my pillow as I would expect it to be if I was losing any.
Feel free to ask further questions if you have any that I can help with

Yeah I am aware that shampooing everyday isn't a good thing. I tend to do it anyways :/ I have a oily scalp if I don't wash daily. Since the accutane reduces oils maybe I will be able to swing every other day. Actually no scratch that I will do every other day. I bleach my hair anyways so it dries out pretty good after getting it colored, so I don't need any further damage.
I was reding your log and I noticed a few posts ago you said that your lip balm isn't helping much. I am using auqaphor all the time I swear it's always loaded on my lips. I was trying to stay ahead of the chapped lips. Yeah well it has not worked. I find ipthe auqaphor just sits on my lips it doesn't absorb into my lips. Plus you take a drink and it's all on your cup or can. Did you find something that worked for you? Also are you using any supplements? I am thinking of picking up some fish oil tomorrow. My knees are starting to get sore I figure that will help with joint and muscle pain.
I actually had the same problem as you (before Accutane) when I tried to switch to shampooing less often - my hair would get too oily and also the dandruff/flaking would get worse it seemed. But I have not noticed that oiliness and flaking now since I started shampooing less often while on Accutane. It may indeed be a good time to switch to shampooing less often since your scalp may be producing less oils which otherwise would interfere with the switch.
I've been using a combination Aquaphor lip repair and Nivea "kiss of moisture" balm for my lips. I've realized that I was not applying enough of either after I purchased them because my lips were peeling ridiculously. I read that others were having problems with the Aquaphor staying on their lips (it could be licked away easily). So I thought that maybe applying Aquaphor, rubbing it around, and then applying the balm might make it stay on my lips better. I've been trying that the past two days and at the moment my lips are actually not peeling, which is unusual. I will keep trying these two products with this method and hopefully the peeling will lessen
I'm not taking any supplements or anything. I wasn't recommended to take any and not really sure that I want to change anything and risk possibly worsening something. I'm kind of superstitious lol. But I also haven't been noticing any joint or muscle pains as a symptom. Are you taking anything besides potentially fish oil?
I think I am going to have to try something else with the lips. Im glad you figured out a way to combat your dry lips. Now I am going to have to work on a way for mine, the Aquaphor just isn't cutting it for me. I am using a B-12 supplement but that is because my body doesn't absorb B-12 nothing to do with Accutane. I have been taking B-12 supplements for years now. I will be starting to take fish oil today though. My knees are bothering me, I am really cautious of that because I reacted badly to minocycline. I woke up one morning and couldn't walk, and it was because I had a allergic reactions to the Minocycline and it was attacking my joints. I just want to make sure I am taking every precaution I can so I dont run into that problem again.

Please tell me if you do find a better solution than Aquaphor, as I would be interested to hear especially if my lips don't stay moisturized.
Hope the fish oil rids you of the knee pain.
I'll let you know if I find anything for the lips. I'll do some research and see if I can find something else. Although it does seem like the majority use aquaphor. I'm hopeful I will find something. I got some fish oil today and also bought some Biotin. So we will see how that works
Hey man. Good to hear you're making progress. I had a small kind of rash on my hand too, although mine was on the right hand . Using a bit of moisturiser on it each morning seems to be getting rid of it though, I guess it was just dry skin for me.
We're both a month down!
Day 34:
Guess it is about time for an update
- My face has stayed relatively the same but slowly improved over the past several days. I am not getting new pimples very often. Just a couple new ones came (and are starting to go away) along the bottom of my left jaw. One pimple began to arise above my nose, but fortunately stopped growing when it was relatively small. A couple stinkin cysts continue to linger - one below my left eye and one in front of my right ear. But I am SO grateful there are not as many as in the past.
- The rash on my hands has somewhat subsided for now. At least it is less noticeable. It seems, as esa stated, that moisturizing it often helps.
- My lips did not stay completely moisturized as they were a couple days ago, however the more frequent application of Aquaphor and the Nivea balm has seemed to decrease the issue significantly. I certainly have less dryness and gigantic flakes peeling off (maybe there's just no "skin" left there >.<).
- Interestingly, my facial skin is not seeming drier since I started taking the higher dosage 4 days ago. But maybe it takes more time to kick in, or maybe it won't have much of an effect at all.
- My scalp has remained mostly flake and itch free. I pray that this continues as it was probably the most unbearable part at the start of the treatment. I have skipped shampoo for two days in a row (shampoo-none-none-shampoo) two times now.
So this is what has happened as of late. I almost hate to report good news because I'm superstitious
Sounds like the ance is being kept at bay now. No new breakouts, just healing up all the old ones!
Awesome you have your scalp under control. Itchy and flaky not something I would enjoy either.
What dose did you move up to? In 2 weeks I'm supposed to be moved up to 60mg assuming blood work comes back okay. I'm starting to think there isn't a way to avoid the chapped lips at all. Maybe all we can do is keep them at bay, which is a bummer. To think its going to be 5 months with extremely chapped lips sucks. Oh well such is life right
Keep on keeping on
Thanks Betsy
I was moved up from 40mg to 60mg. But being moved up to a higher dosage depends on your weight. I'm a lightweight guy, so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm not bumped up again. But I think I should hit a good cumulative dosage at this rate.
As for the lips, I just hope irreversible damage is not done. I agree, I think the only thing we can do is keep it at bay. Apply lots of Aquaphor and drink lots of water
Thanks Betsy

Hey White Stang, It's Betsy. I changed my name on here now that somehow I am a veteran member I can do that. I wanted to check in and see how your doing? Plus I wanted to let you know I found out to put bacitracin ointment on your lips for quicker healing. I found some laying around at my house and put some on last night before bed and when I woke up today my lips didn't hurt anymore and aren't peeling anymore. Tastes like crap, but it works. As long as I am not eating it my derm says it safe. So Im good there. haha
When I go to dermatologist next week I am going to ask for something prescription for them. Until time I am using this because my lips feel so much better today. Turned them around quickly. I'd give it a try if you haven't found anything better for yours yet.
Hey Betsy. I like the new name.. it's kinda dark and intersting Good to hear about bacitracin. Might use that if I need to. It seemed like my dermatologist was reluctant to prescribe me anything for my lips and suggested to just continue to use aquaphor.
Day 38:
- Big stinkin zit (mentioned on Day 34) inflated in the middle of my eyebrows. Hopefully it will go away soon. It's really my only active acne right now, except that a few started sprouting on my shoulders (which is irregular). I wonder if the extra dosage is causing them to surface and be flushed out.
- My lips have been off and on with peeling. I have been applying aquaphor more often and that seems to be helping. Overnight is when they seem to worsen.
- Still continuing with shampooing less often. Only yesterday it was really itchy for some reason so I used shampoo one day early to prevent flaking.
- Rash on hands went away (for now), which is great! I've been applying lotion to them every night and sometimes during the day and that may have helped.

Thanks Brian, I have no idea why I even changed the name.. I guess because I could haha I don't know. Anyways, I don't know if my dr. will prescribe me anything for my lips either. I am going to ask her to never the less. I assume she will, she's all about making me happy and comfortable. My luck this will change now that I want something to make me more comfortable haha. Good to know the rash has cleared up on your hands. That must have been uncomfortable. I was going to ask you, do you flake skin all over your face or just in certain areas? I have noticed the only part of my face that is drying out so far is my chin. Sometimes I flake around my nose but most the time it's just my chin. Kind of odd I was thinking. I can tell I am drying out in general because I am now able to go every other day with the hair washing. I started taking biotin just to make sure I'm not losing any hair though. I would be devastated if my hair was falling out. Anything I can do to help prevent that is awesome.
Glad to hear things are going good with you
Neat to hear you're trying every other day with the shampoo!
And yeah, in the beginning I was experiencing dryness all over my face. But for the past 2-3 weeks it has been mostly my mouth/chin/nose/eyebrow area that has been dry and flaky. I find that after I shower in the morning and moisturize, if I go eat something or yawn or anything that stretches the skin around my mouth area, it starts flaking again. So I have to re-moisturize. Sometimes this happens a couple times and then it's gone for the rest of the day. Is it like this for you too or just me? Maybe it is different if you apply make-up, not sure.
Oh that happens to me too. I am moisturizing to keep the flaking at bay 3 times a day. Makeup doesn't help the situation at all. Half your face looks raw and peeling the other half looks nice and matte. I try not to wear makeup any longer than I need to. If I'm home for the day my makeup is off within 5 minutes so I can moisturize. Wearing the makeup makes me feel like I am being counter productive. I'm taking all the meds and creams so help my skin and unclog my pores, then I cover it all with a bunch of junk. A necessary evil for me until I clear up better, I suppose.
I can't wait for my skin on my cheeks start to flake honestly, help clear away those red marks. Do you have a lot of hyper pigmentation? It's hard for me to tell how much I have but I know after the accutane there is going to be work to do still, as far as the pigmentation. I have a plan with that though. I'm going to try black and white skin bleaching cream as soon as its safe and fade those babies away. One day at a time though!
Never thought about flaking helping get rid of the scars. Is that true? If so, that's encouraging.
What do you mean by hyperpigmentation? You mean scares due to acne or something else?
Hyper pigmentation meaning red marks or brown marks due to acne. As far as the shedding of the new skin. My dermatologist explained accutane like retin a. It helps turn over the skin cells and encourage new skin growth. Thus shedding away our old skin with the marks from the acne and pushing up new skin that is clear. I don't think it will help with any scars like rolling or box car or ice pick scars anything that is indented in the skin
