Hey smile.png

I am a 19 year old male in college. I visited my dermatologist a week ago about my acne, and she decided it would be best I start Accutane (Amnesteem) treatment. I picked it up on Friday, February 24th and am currently on day 2. I am taking the 40mg pill once a day.

My acne really started up when I was around 16-17, and last year I visited the same dermatologist and was prescribed a treatment of Benzoyl peroxide, Tretinoin cream, and some sulphur face wash. The treatment lasted for about half a year, but then my Benzaclin expired, I stopped using it (but still used the other stuff), and the acne returned in full force.

So about 5 months after the acne returned, I decided to do something about it. I'm tired of feeling embarrassed and that I'm one of the few at my college who still have acne. So I hope Amnesteem will help get rid of it once and for all.

Status at start of treatment:

I have pimples on my forehead and cheeks. I usually have at least one cyst somewhere on my face every day. The acne on the forehead is annoying because it can be quite itchy (and scratching it would only make it worse of course). My skin has had dryness problems for the past couple years, but has been kept under control by moisturizer. The weird thing is that my forehead gets quite oily, but the rest of my face is dry and sometimes flaky. I've also battled dandruff over the years, but haven't had any major dandruff problems as long as I don't scratch my scalp.

Day 1:

Took the pill at night after dinner and thus there wasn't much time to notice a difference.

Day 2:

Woke up, noticed a couple more whiteheads around my mouth. Otherwise, no change in the acne. Face dry and a bit flaky, but hard to say if it was different than before. Throughout the day, my lips started feeling a bit dryer than usual. Went to the grocery store and picked up some Aquaphor and Nivea lip moisturizers as suggested here on the forums. My scalp is starting to feel itchier than normal. Thinking that I should pick up a dandruff shampoo in case it starts getting much worse.

Thanks for reading!

I don't need to lose any weight, but I could do more of those other things.

Thanks everyone.

Good luck! I started the same day as you. My scalp is getting itchy too! I've never had dandruff before but I might get a shampoo like you suggested as a preventative measure :P

Thanks, it will be cool to track my progress along with you :)

Day 4:

My acne seemed to go down in the past couple days. Might be because I've been self-conscious about my face and thus haven't been touching it as often as I may have been in the past. It may also be resultant of ditching the Tretinoin cream and Sulfur wash - it's hard to say with multiple factors going on. Anyway, I had a presentation today so I'm glad I didn't have an initial breakout yet! My scalp is still itchy, but fortunately it doesn't appear to be shedding much. I still need to go out and buy some kind of dandruff shampoo to use every once in a while. My face does seem to be getting a bit drier than usual, but I have been keeping it moisturized with CeraVe.

Thank you :)

Day 6:

Wow the days do go by fast. The acne has stayed about the same, but a couple more actives have popped up since it decreased over the past several days. My cheeks are itchy and warm-feeling, which really makes me want to rub/scratch them but I've been very good about not doing so. My lips and skin were drier today so I had to use more moisturizer.

Nearly one week down man! I keep rubbing/scratching my cheeks, I think I need to discipline myself a bit more like you have.. :)

Day 7:

Well darn, some small white heads are starting to pop up around my cheeks and chin areas. Face and scalp still itchy. At least it is the weekend for me.

Finally went out and bought some Neutrogena T-Gel and T-Sal dandruff/flake shampoo that I will try tomorrow. Cost an arm and a leg, but I don't care at this point. The scalp itchiness combined with the face itchiness is driving me up the wall.

Day 10:

Finished the first pack of pills. I think I am going through my initial breakout stage because each day I'm getting a batch of whiteheads and occasionally a cyst. The white heads seem to come and go extraordinary fast, possibly because they pop so easily. Kind of weird.

My face is quite dry, and thus it takes a fair amount of lotion to moisturize it in the morning. My lips are dry still, but kept under control with the lip balm stuff.

Also, scalp is far less itchy and flaky now. I used the T-gel on Friday, the T-Sal on Saturday and the T-gel again today. I'll probably take a break from those tomorrow and see how it goes.

Day 12:

Well it appears most of the white heads have gone away for now, just a couple lingering. Unfortunately, the cysts are still around, some new, some old. Face is getting really quite dry. Have to moisturize like once right after a shower, and then at least one more time like 30 minutes later.

Presentation in front of the entire class tomorrow. Yay.

I've never had a nosebleed my entire life so in a weird kind of way I wouldn't mind experiencing one! Glad to hear your whiteheads are going away.

Never in your life? That's quite amazing!

It's weird this occurred, because I did not touch my nose whatsoever after waking up. So not sure what sparked it.

Yeah I took pics right at the start. I'm too shy to post them lol. Anyway, good luck to you!

Day 15:

Half way through the first month already surprised.gif And geez, I'm really starting to realize the effects of this drug. Everything from (occasionally) extremely flaky hair to constantly dry lips and skin.

Looks like the initial breakout may have passed. Still have several cysts and larger pimples that will take a while to go away. >.>

Oh and final exams next week, so the stress will probably cause initial breakout v2 lol

Thank you, good luck to you too smile.png

Day 18:

Seems like the breakout has gone away a good bit. The cysts are still taking a while to go away - slowly but surely.

Still massively dry skin. I've stopped shampooing every day. I now do it every other day and use T-Sal shampoo. So far it's working to keep the dandruff to a minimum, and hopefully it will make my hair and scalp healthier to shampoo less often.

Edit: Oh! I forgot to add that my skin is so much less oily! By the end of the day, it used to be fairly "wet" on my forehead with oil. Now it's pretty much dry. :D

Woops, I just realized I forgot to take a pill last night because I was so entranced in completing my final essay for class.

So I guess I will call this Day 20 rather than 21 tongue.png

Anyway, no real change. But I hope missing a day doesn't affect anything :\

Day 23:

I had a few pimples/cysts pop up a few days ago, but they've slowly gone away. Looking clearer today.

My hair has been much better in terms of flakiness and itchiness since I started shampooing every other day rather than every other day and using T-Sal shampoo with a conditioner. I hope to cut my usage of T-Sal down to every-other shampooing as it makes my hair dry and I don't want to use it too much for too long. But I also don't want to flakiness/itchiness to return, so I've got to strike a balance.

Going to get my 2nd blood test tomorrow and then see the dermatologist about the next month on Tuesday.

Day 25:

Visited the dermatologist today, blood test results were fine. She saw some improvement and decided to bump me up to a 60mg/day dose once my 40mg runs out. Kind of surprised me since I'm a light weight guy.

Day 30:

Wrapping up my first prescription of a one-month supply of 40mg Amnesteem pills. It has gone pretty quick - people aren't lying when they tell you it will tongue.png. I picked up a supply of two 30mg packs of Clavaris from the pharmacy, because they didn't have the 30mg size of Amnesteem. I'm not really a fan of switching as Amnesteem seems to be working well for me, so I hope Clavaris works the same...

Since my initial breakout, the acne has subsided a fair amount. However, my face has been a little itchy the past few days, making me believe another breakout may be on the way. saywhat.gif My lips are still a significant issue in terms of dryness and peeling. The Aquaphor and Nivia balm don't seem to be working all that great. I hope I can get my lips under control.

Also, I've got an unusual, bumpy rash on my left hand which my derm told me might be eczema, that she said sometimes breaks out when on accutane. Great neutral.gif However, I'm not so sure it's eczema because I read that itchiness usually accompanies eczema, and so far it hasn't been itchy at all.
