My name is James and I'm 19 yrs old and I am suffering from cystic acne. I stumbled upon this site while trying to research ways to help my acne. I am so frustrated. I used to have clear skin and now it is getting worse. I will post pictures. I have so many questions and would appreciate help from ANYONE. My skin (especially neck) just gets so oily! I am starting to break out on my neck and get cysts... why the neck? Am I shaving wrong? I just feel really gross now. I also live in AZ where it is SO hot and I feel like my acne is just baking on my skin when I go outside. I have so many questions! I'm thinking of also maybe making a video diary. Would anyone watch?
I was on accutane at age 15 and my skin was clear for about a year! I'm currently trying to get back on accutane but my liver enzymes are too high when I get my blood work done :/ did acne screw up my liver? I have been to my dermatologist's office at least a hundred times in the last 3 years. Has cost me and my parents A LOT of money.
Just really looking for advice from ANYONE who has had similar problem. Any vitamins I should take? Any food I should stop eating? Any food I should start eating? ANYTHING I can do? Like I said, I have SO MANY questions. Thinking about making a youtube video or something...
Here are a few pictures of me when my skin was clear, and a few pictures when you could see me starting to break out on the neck. My prom photos are terrible! haha
I don't really want to insult you by trivializing your acne, but in my honest opinion...your acne is barely noticable. At least from the photos you've provided.
You honestly make me feel envious - I wish my skin was that clear. My skin looks absolutely disgusting and it has for at least two years since I broke out. Unfortunately nothing worked to get rid of it and I'm still looking for the 'right one'
I'm just getting started with this site and I'm going to be starting the "regimine" - I'm ordering the products shortly and going to see if this actually works for me. Hopefully it does. I miss my skin before it looked like I had a plague on my face.
I haven't experienced a success story from this site's regimine obviously because I haven't tried it yet, so I can't really recommend it. But apparently a large amount of people have had success with using the guide that this site provides aswell as the product list.
Theres a few obvious things you can do besides medication.
Obviously don't touch your face. Irritation and bacteria. Avoid greasy foods. You may want to avoid other types of foods, but you have to figure that out. Some people break out from specific types of food that other's don't.
You're 19 so even though you may think otherwise, you're probably still in puberty. Your acne could just be caused by hormones.
I'm personally going to try the regimine and see if it works for me (I hope!) Maybe you could try it.
Yeah, stop touching them. I guess just do the best you can to avoid touching it. I personally just always go back to the thought, "This will only make it worse." and that stops me from even attempting it.
I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. I hope your acne gets better.
I can see a bit on the first prom photo but I can't really see any on the second. I wish someone else would respond to help you out. Not sure why I'm the only one that's responding, that sucks.
Oh, and I just re-read your post. I would stay away from acutane. I've heard that acutane can cause cancer and other negative side effects.
I don't know the validity of that claim, but I would check it out before you continue using it. As far as shaving, maybe. Part of keeping your skin clear I know is about keeping your skin not irritated.
If you check the regimin info, there's a shaving extra that recommends certain blades to avoid irritating your skin. Part of the guide also recommends that you use a facial cleanser as shaving cream.
I'm not really sure what else I can say. I wish someone else would respond.
I agree, it doesn't look too bad! But at least for me, pictures don't really show everything, so I get ya. I use the regimine from this website, and use benzoyl peroxide. I used to have a little bit of acne on my upper neck, and BP has helped with that a lot. The only thing about using it on my neck was that the benzoyl peroxide really dried out my neck. More so than other areas of my face. Sorry I'm not much help!
I have been on the regimen for about 32 weeks. I did have a little bit of worsening before it got better. It seemed horrible at the time, but looking back, it really was not that bad! I actually kept a record of my experience with the regimine which you can see here:

Let me know if you have any questions!
Ever tried using a gentle acne scrub or even a pack/mask on your neck? It may not cure it but I'm sure it will relive inflammation and even speed up the healing process!
I did get a random breakout near my neck...like under my jawline if that counts. Give it a shot - acne scrubs are pretty inexpensive. A good mask for acne I like to use is the ever so popular Queen Helene mint julep mask. Super affordable.
Another inexpensive product I've discovered is Dickson's Witch hazel. It's a toner - doesn't smell amazing but it has shown positive results for me.
Aw, you'll be fine good luck with the regimen. Neck acne is generally hormonal so you'll grow out of it. I have neck acne, but it's non-inflamed, so I need more exfoliants rather than anti-bacterials.
I think the regimen will help but remember that more isn't necessarily better. Just progress exactly as the regimen says. I know dryness is a little enticing because you think it means you're producing less oil, but in reality your skin is always producing the same amount of oil, you're just irritating and drying the skin from the surface. It's more irritating than anything. Try to promote HEALTHY skin, not dry.
Well I bought the regimine kit earlier today. (cleanser, BP, moisturizer, AHA, jojoba oil) 108 bucks! hopefully it works. Got any advice? I've watched all of Dan's videos and want to hear multiple suggestions and opinions.
@CeruleanCity Could the regimen possibly be an upgraded mask? Or two completely different things?I am intrigued about the idea of the mask and think that might actually help a lot. I just ordered my regimen though so I think I'm going to try that first.
Also, since I have oily skin is it OK to use the moisturizer and jojoba oil? or could that possibly make people with oily skin worse?
This is the only face/neck wash I have used in the last several years. I have nothing to compare it to but my face is kept in pretty good shape just my neck gets infamed acne all the time. Anybody else use this? Could it be effecting my neck at all? I am not very knowlegable on products... Any help/suggestions would be great
Even with oily skin, you should use a moisturizer! That's one of the biggest mistakes, opting out from using moisturizer just because your skin isn't dry. Your skin responds to its surroundings. If you're putting on moisturizer your skin should back off on oil production [mine sure did]. Regardless of your skin type a moisturizer should always be a staple in your skincare routine. Just make sure the moisturizer you're using it suitable for your skin type. [ex. oil free moisturizer for acne/oily skin etc]
In regards to the regimen I can't say much. All I know is that it's fairly strict so stay on point from start to finish. Good luck with that and if you decide to stop the regimen take a look at masks/toners I mentioned
edit: now seeing the scrub you used...maybe scrubs are too abrasive for your neck?
Thanks! Just ordered my regimen... should be here any day now. Hopefully on my birthday Friday! Going to start out very slow on the BP though. Also, do you know much about AHA? can I just into that on my neck or is that something I should use after week 3 or something? Do you have any personal experience?
If you will be using bp, wait a month or so to start aha. I got to the point where I could use aha in the morning and bp at night and still be clear. Now, I only use aha once a day and and continue to be clear. It's a long process but has the potential for great results in the end.
