I've been on accutane for just over a month now. I'm on my fifth week right now. My face is much worse than it has ever been and seems to be getting even worse by the day. I had mild ish acne before. I thought it was pretty bad but I am also somewhat critical of myself. It was definitely affecting my every day life. I started to get huge breakouts on my back and chest and that's when I decided I needed to do accutane. Anyway, I'm 18-girl-125lbs on 40mg twice a day five months. When I started my skin got a drier and my face cleared up considerably. I'd say about two and a half weeks in it started to break out really bad and it has been escalating until now... almost to my sixth week. I'm also very dry. My face HURTS and itches. And any acne I have is SO red. My doctor hasn't said anything about it. I have read a lot of Testimonies about an initial breakout with accutane but I'm worried because it seems to be lasting longer than it should and getting worse. Is this normal? Will it go away? When? Is there anything I can do to help it get better or at least less red?
Thank you!
Any products that are not natural cause your skin to become addicted to them and it will not truly cure your skin, only work for a certain amount of time before your skin becomes immune to it. Try going the natural/organic way that I did to clear my skin, here's my blog post: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/blogs/entry/32202-how-to-heal/
Please reach out with any questions! Best of luck!!!
Don't worry, that's totally normal! Initial breakouts almost always happen on accutane and it can take up to 3 months for your skin to start really clearing. When I took it years ago the same thing happened to me.
Doctors are SO bad at giving out skincare tips to acne patients for some reason. They rarely even mention it. Make sure you aren't using ANY products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, AHA/BHA, or alcohol. Use a basic, gentle cleanser and a good moisturizer after cleansing. If you are using any toners or serums or stuff like that I would stop doing so for the duration of your course; it's best to keep it as simple as possible. Also, make sure you are using a moisturizer with SPF in the daytime!
I agree, some people just unfortunately get a bad IB on Accutane it seems, even people who had mild acne before starting. Elta MD is a good sunscreen brand, according to a derm I saw, because it's low in irritants. It doesn't contain fatty alcohols which can break some people out...however it does contain Dimethicone if you're sensitive to silicones.
