Time to Give Up on Benzoyl Peroxide?

Hello, I'm 27 years old and have been dealing with acne since my teens. For years I used salicylic acid products with ok results. I still had breakouts so I spoke with a nurse practitioner in dermatology. She recommend using a Benzoyl Peroxide wash (Panoxyl 4%) at night and Cetaphil gentle cleanser in the morning. I follow this at night with a retinoid cream. It dried out my skin to much and ended up getting switched to asulfacetamide lotion. That worked well, but still had blackheads and breakouts. Though I would say my skin was fairly good then. The price of the drug went up a lot so I had to stop it. I decided to got back to the benzoyl peroxide regiment originally proposed. This time I used Neutrogena Clean Pore Cleanser/Mask at 3.5% BP. I'm still using retinoid too. It has been about two months and my face is still breaking out quite a bit. I really don't know if I still need to give it time, or move on to a new treatment. My skin isn't getting dried out this time because I have a good moisturizer in Cerave. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was prescribed a reninoid as well called Differin. Worked until 3 months then all hell broke loose and here I am. I feel you, wish I had some way to help.

Hi, I've used the regimen and I found applying the BP after the moisturiser and also while my face was still wet worked better. Also, I never used the giant amount in the video, just a time or nickel sized amount was sufficient. Hope this helped! Also try taking omega 3 supplements so your skin isn't dry from the inside.

I will also try all these things.

BP has always irritated my skin, I think that it's really good as a spot treatment on pustules and whiteheads and to dry out popped pimples but on papules/cysts or anything without a head it just makes it more inflamed. I really REALLY recommend hydrocortisone cream on papules without a head. I used it for the first time on a papule last night and it has decreased in size by half over night and gotten rid of the surrounding redness. Usually these papules last for about 4 weeks and then scar/hyperpigment for a couple of months after for me so this was a huge help! I read a dermatologist suggesting mixing hydrocortisone and BP and then dabbing it on (ONLY) the spots then covering with a round bandaid. Going to to try that tonight and see how it goes. Just make sure not to use the hydrocortisone cream for more than a few dayas at a time on any one spot and don't use it on large areas.. ONLY as a spot treatment. I hope this helps!

So should I continue to be patient with Benzoyl Peroxide?

Be patient a little longer. I believe that if it persists, try a different product. Salicylic Acid maybe? And use the Benzoyl Peroxide in a spot treatment cream, not a face wash. It doesn't have enough time to work:

-Salicylic Acid Face Wash
-Moisturizer
-Benzoyl Peroxide
