So I just wrote a big long post about my entire story and then deleted it because it was very unorganized, and that bothered me lol. Instead, I'm going to give you a simple rundown of how I believe I have cured my acne as an adult male. Trust me, it's simple..
Eat Healthy
Limit sugary foods to an absolute minimum such as candy and soda. Cut back on dairy (I eliminated it except for occasional cheese on things). Also, anything that you notice makes you break out means you should completely eliminate it from your diet. In my case this is coffee/caffeine. It causes cystic acne for me. I'm a huge coffee lover so this was hard to deal with, but once you're off of it you'll enjoy your skin much more than that cup of coffee in the morning.
Live a healthy lifestyle
Aside from eating healthy, be sure to be active. Work out, exercise, lift weights, and enjoy the outdoors more often. It's good for stress relief and overall quality of life, and no matter what other people say, sweating is natural and helps your face keep everything moving along nicely, just be sure to wash up with water and pat dry and after a lot of sweating.
Eliminate Acne Products (Salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, etc)
Okay, this was pretty much what finished curing me from acne right here. I've been in the routine of completely drying out my face with acne washes by Oxy over the past year or two. Little did I know that this was a contributing cause. I now use a product for men with all-natural ingredients by a company called Rugged & Dapper. ( https://www.amazon.com/Daily-Power-Scrub-Facial-Cleanser/dp/B00SETTZGE/ )
It's expensive, but it works well and gently exfoliates your skin without stripping you of your moisture and natural oils. This was my problem the whole time. Drying my face out caused my body to overcompensate by producing a lot of oil and clogging up my pores, when all I needed to do was stop washing my face with those products. Research this and you'll see quite a few people have stopped using products completely and just use a little soap and water and it cured their acne. They're not crazy - it really works! I use this wash because it uses all natural ingredients and a lot of oils that help my skin look great and it smells nice and manly too. Wash in the morning and before bed, and ignore your face for the rest of the day.
I finally don't have to worry anymore! My next goal is to try getting my washing down to once a day (just in the shower or when shaving) so I can live like a normal person, but I'll continue the twice a day cycle for now and see how it goes. My face is now oily (like it should be) instead of dried up and irritated. I'll have to get use to the oily face again but boy does it look a lot better!
Please note that I have only been using this was for a week, so I'm not entirely sure if I'm permanently cured. However, I have been eating healthy and living healthy for months now and it's definitely contributing. I have been lurking in these forums for years and I can tell you this is the first time I've felt completely confident in my latest results to the point where I created an account to share my story with everyone in hopes to help out more people like me. I have a few residual non-inflamed and unnoticeable bumps (VERY SMALL) as well as the occasional very small and inflamed pimple, but I think after a few more weeks I won't be having any issues whatsoever. It's only been a week so I think the last of it is just working it's way out "quietly". I will check back in with everyone in a month or two and give an update. If I can make it a full two months without breaking out, I'll know the nightmare is finally over! )
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with nor was I paid to promote the product mentioned above. I found it on Amazon, read the great reviews, tried it, and it's the first thing that's actually helped (and possibly cured) my acne.
Everything you say makes a lot of sense. My son is 17 and has noticed the biggest improvement in his acne just from watching his diet. Avoiding sugar and high carbs is key, and for him pizza seems to be a trigger. He also limits dairy to just cheese on sandwiches. He doesn't follow any crazy strict diets, he just tries to avoid the foods he knows will break him out. Getting some sun is also good. And he just cleanses once a day with a basic liquid cleanser and uses the acne.org AHA a few times a week. BP never seemed to stop the acne and just irritated his skin and made it red, same with salicylic acid. He has definitely found the 'less is more' approach to work.
I have bad news. A few days after posting this I started breaking out really bad again.. UGH. I new I jumped the gun on this one. I should have known better than to think I actually cured my acne.
Something I noticed though, both times I broke out (one was on regular acne products and the other on this new wash) was almost exactly 2 days after working out and drinking a whey protein shake. I googled it and it looks like a lot of people have had problems with whey protein causing acne. Now.. I could have swore that these protein shakes used to actually make my skin better but maybe I'm wrong.
I'm really getting tired of trying to figure out what is causing it and how to fix it. I'm trying to live my life normally and my face is a damn science experiment.
