I was on this messageboard many years ago back in 2005. My acne back then was pretty bad. I then had read about dan's regimen and bought all the products. I had used the benzoyl peroxide 2.5% that was in a blue bottle that was bought from here. Back then Dan didn't have his own cleanser so it was recommended to use cetaphil as the cleanser for the regimen. So it was use cetaphil cleanser, then 2.5% Dan's BP and then use a moisturizer.
I recalled doing it and it made my skin very dry and although it did seem to help with pimples, it didn't clear it up. I also recalled it made my face reddish a lot.
Well i then stopped the regimen b/c i read that benzoyl peroxide makes red marks take longer to heal. At that time, i had tons of red marks so i quit the regimen solely because of that. I cleared up my acne when i used a glycolic acid face cleanser. I got happy because my acne was pretty clear. I then used some AHA for red marks and it helped a bit but my acne was under control.
Well the last year or so i have broken out very badly. I have cystic pimples on certain areas of my face. The glycolic acid face cleanser that im using no longer seems to work anymore. I had thought that was the product for me with acne if i ever got it again.
So now im currently using gentle purpose cleanser but i dont like how it feels on my skin. It seems to cause breakouts just a bit. I'm currently using neutrogena acne defense lotion that has 2 percent salyclid acid. I used this product for any pimples that i got many years ago and it worked very well. Well now... it doesn't seem to have the same effects anymore.
The thing is im thinking about trying the regimen again and now unlike 8 years ago, dan has all 3 products for you to buy at once as oppose to getting your own cleanser and moisturizer. However, right now i have tons of red marks as well and im worried that my red marks will take much longer to fade. That is the reason why i use SA for my pimples this whole time and back then.
Can someone tell me if the regimen works for certain areas of your face if you have cystic acne? Would the regimen not work if i substitute SA for Benzoyl peroxide? The thing is i would have no problems with using BP but the fact that i read back in 2005 and 2006 when i was using it that many ppl said it makes red marks longer to fade, i quickly discontinued it. Obviously red marks isn't as bad as having acne but if i could use something else such as SA where red marks dont stay that long, obviously i would choose that route.
I also read reviews that dan's moisturizer isn't that good but his cleanser is good.
My other questions are... whats the difference between dans cleanser vs a cetaphil or cerave cleanser? The same with his moisturizer vs a cetaphil or cerave moisturizing lotion? Would using a cetaphil/cerave cleanser and moisturizer and Dan's 2.5 percent BP still be considered following the regime?
And the red marks. How long did it take for the red marks to fade away for you who are on the regime?
Okay so there is the regimen with the 3 step method. So after your face clears up and you use AHA, do you no longer use BP anymore? So assuming you have no more acne, then you just use cleanser, then AHA and then moisturizer?
nicmic, i looked at your regimen and i see you use cetaphil cleanser and moisturizer instead of Dans and it worked for you. So basically dans regimen, the only thing you really need is his Benzoyl peroxide 2.5% and the others you can substitue with cetaphil? Could you substitute the cleanser with a cerave cleanser or even olay? I assume it cannot be an acne cleanser or something like neutrogena?
Also, the AHA. What if you use another type of AHA like alpha hydrox souffle as oppose to dan's aha?
Also for the moisturizer for the step 3, did dan say if you dont use his moisturizer only use the cetaphil moisturizing lotion? Thus using like an aveeno moisturizing lotion or aloe vera gel would do no good?

If you manage to clear your acne with BP then keep using the BP as a preventative action. BP doesn't cure acne but it controls it. When your skin is used to the BP already, you can incorporate AHA to give your skin that extra boost.
I use cetaphil because I have used it forever and it doesn't break me out. Others prefer Cerave and I'm pretty sure you can use that if you want. I don't think any acne cleansers will be good for your skin since the BP already dries out your skin a lot. Stick to gentle cleansers.
For AHA, I use a local brand I found in my country. You can use other brands, I believe Dan also recommended Alpha Hydrox enhanced lotion with the 10% glycolic acid in it.
Again for moisturizer, I use cetaphil because I have used it forever and it is also readily available. You can use other kinds as long as they don't have any pore clogging ingredients. A lot of store bought regimen users use either cetaphil, cerave or olay.
