Can we take a sulfur supplement?
I read on homeopathic medical site that acne can be caused by a deficiency in sulfur, so I ordered a bottle of it.
Its at the store, waiting to be picked up.
I really wonder if there is enough sulfur in raw garlic. My boyfriend and I eat 7 cloves of raw garlic almost each night.
So I'll try a Sulfur supplement.
And, how many people are noticing results with this?

Ok, I ask the pharmacist what I should take for a Sulfur deficiency... and was told to take MSM. (A form of sulfur)
I'm now taking 2000 mg (2 grams) of sulfur each day.
Research MSM on the net and you get lot of results about all the things it cures... from reducing scarring, to quitting drug addictions, reducing menstrual cramps, and many other things.
I'm starting it today and expect to see results with my acne in 3 days or within a week ... if it works.
If that doesnt work, I'll try the onion. .... although I am dreading that.
I'll post back the results.
I'm not sure if someone already mentioned this - but instead of eating raw onion plain or with orange juice (*squirm*), how about in a salad? I eat 1/4 of an onion almost everyday by chopping it up into little pieces and putting it in my salad. I didn't know about sulfur content...I was eating it because they're very anti-inflammatory.

The trick is to cut up the onion a while before eating it, so that the burning gas dissipates and doesn't give you a stomach ache. Rinsing it under water seriously helps too. Do it once after peeling (but before cutting it up) so it doesn't burn your eyes, and then a second time after it's cut up.
Hmm, I wonder if rinsing it too much would take out some of the sulfur:

Onions also help us get chromium, which help our cells deal with insulin (the whole insulin spiking, glycemic load thing is another big acne theory).
Super Duper Cool website:

The original poster said that sulfur is the 3rd most abundant mineral in our bodies, but I keep reading that it's either copper or potassium. The internet can't seem to give me a straight answer.
Anybody know?
A couple sites even say that magnesium is the 3rd most abundant, but most say it's the 4th.
The link that's on the original post also lists other foods that are supposed to have a good amount of sulfur:
"But other foods also provide large amounts of sulfur, including egg yolks, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussel sprouts, watercress, radish, leek, onion, and of course garlic."
i have been taking "sulfur balls"
they sound weird..
but i got them at a nutrition store,
one of the active ingredients is sulfur.
i take about 15 of them through out the day and let them dissolve under my tongue.
they have been working extremely well.
i always dissolve them in a bit of water and apply it topically.
Interestingly, sulfuric foods are also regarded as being key to killing candida. Many of the candida diets advise the intake of raw onion, broccoli and other sulfur-forming vegetables.
Something I found very interesting while doing some research into skin conditions is that the skin directly mimics the condition of the intestinal walls. Ie if your intestinal walls are damaged etc through either candida or some other digestive condition, then it will cause acne.
I am taking about a cup of aloe vera juice a day to help soothe and rebuild my digestive tract, along with the sulfur-based foods, and it seems to be helping.
Oh, and one other thing which may be relevant - serotonin (the feel-good and sleep endorphin) is made in the digestive tract - so if the digestive system isn't functioning properly, the likely result is insomnia and sleep problems.
If you really wanna speed up the rebuilding of the digestive tract, start adding Colostrum supplements and L-Glutamine to your regime. Just a week after adding those, I'm not getting constipation, terrible indigestion, or gas that I had to deal with for a month.
Yep, been taking colostrum for about 2 months - along with SPFloractiv which works in conjunction with the colostrum to speed up the process. Glutamine is also taken daily - but by default - because I use it as part of my weight-training regime. Digestive enzymes and probiotics are also key.
I've added plenty of healthy food into my diet
along with the MSM , and Zinc supplement.
I went high carbs for days to see if I would break out. I only got 1-2 small acne. Is going away so fast.
right now my skin looks nice.. not oily or dry. Occasionally, I will be eating a lot more healthy foods.
but I will be taking 2000mg MSM and Zinc 50mg everyday.
Here is one of the best threads that I've come across discussing MSM supplementation which gives a lot of details about what type of MSM is the best and when you should take it and how much you should take.

Some info on the detox effect and how to lesson it here: http://www.msm-msm.com/faq.html
What is detox?MSM enables your cells and tissues to release toxins that have built up over the years. Apparently sulfur is a vital part of our waste management system, and if we have not had enough of it our bodies were not able to release some of the waste substances. If you take too much MSM, your body will release too much waste at one time for your kidneys and liver to handle. This waste in your blood stream can cause all kinds of problems ranging from flu-like symptoms to re-experiencing the effects of drugs that you have taken in the past. For example, heavy caffiene users may feel extra-jittery. The key to reducing or eliminating detox symptoms is to start on MSM slowly so that the waste in your tissues is released slowly and to drink lots of water so that the released toxins will be flushed out of your body quickly.

Yeah I got all kinds of varying results searching for MSM as being the third most abundant mineral in the body as well. But I found plenty of results saying that it is the third most abundant mineral in the body so it probably just has something to do with the way the others are classifying it. And they may just be completely wrong. I don't know, I'll have to research it. But it's definitely not copper. Copper is a trace mineral whereas sulfur is a major mineral. Copper is the third most abundant trace mineral, not major. That's why 2 mg of Copper is the RDA.
Sulfur is the sixth most abundant macromineral in breast milk and the third most abundant mineral based on percentage of total body weight.

Flip through most nutrition textbooks, and you'll discover that sulfur is hardly ever mentioned, despite it being the third most abundant mineral (after calcium and phosphorus) in the body, accounting for 1 percent of your weight.
OK i've got a bunch of info from this site, eventually id like to do a big post to share all my insights. for now ill stay on topic to sulfur. after breaking out bad this winter i went and started from scratch revamping my diet.............
thing that worked for me were:
apple cider vinegar : a large gulp full morn and night
juice of 1 lime morn and night
cutting out dairy
cutting down carbs.
i recommend an asian centric hunter gatherer diet.
i found that miso is good too. i mix this with the vinegar morn and night. it contains beneficial flora (yogurt i like but always breaks me out this doesnt)
for moisturizer i only use olive oil (weird i know)
for toner i use rose water mixed with honey and oliveoil this is only thing that does not irritate my skin
finally i also started juicing with a juicer
the most beneficial veggies were carrot, beets and ...onions.
i tried previously eating a whole onion...was good but nothing that made me a convert.
however juicing two onions (kinda big ones more than i would eat) WORKS GREAT
however this is extremely unpalatable( i am a tough dude so i can easily drink sour/bitter stuff but even this is tough)
so i ordered onion pills will try these. now seeing msm and glucos.... would like to try those.
other tips:balanced diet tons of fresh fruit and vegs, fish, meat, whole eggs are great.plus any kind of traditional pickled stuff with beneficial bacteria.
peace to all
Any luck with this sulfur guys?
My Dad said he took it for his in the 50s and it cured him, but tasted horrible. I dont know how he took it but i presume it was a drink!
I'm a med student and we have access to Databases of all Med Librarys around and there are lots of studys from the 50s and 60s about Sulfur and Acne, (and BP too!) but they're all out of date so i can only see the title...
Anyone got any input on this?
I going to buy a sufur soap tomorrow and try up my sulfur intake in my diet too.
But its very confusing as to whats the best source of sulfur to take? Raw or cooked garlic or onions? Or in supplement form?
Does the sulfur degrade if you cook it?
Any help?
Thanks
John
