IMPORTANT: I no longer recommend Betaine Hydrochloride supplements. While I do believe they help people and they helped me as well, I think they are a short-term solution. The long-term solution to low stomach acid is to improve your overall health. One of the best things you can do is ingest natural sources of calcium such as Raw Organic Dairy and Canned Fish with Bones. Also get good sleep and reduce your stress. These were the most important changes I made to improve my stomach acid production and I believe they are much better solutions than taking Betaine Hydrochloride at every meal.
What if raw (or even non raw) dairy makes me bloated and gain weight super fast (like adding on a pound from one glass of milk!)!!!
Guys, I took my 2 ms cap within a meal.... And I had this SLIGHT warm sensation in my chest... Bug not severe heartburn... Should I stay at 2... Cause I take 1 before and after a meal... I didn't exp anything in the first one.., but did in the second one... And also- I used to have constipation.., now I am experiencing diarriea after 1 hour of taking hcl....
Is something going wrong???
very interesting.
yes, anger has been documented to inhibit the release of gastric secretions, HCI is one of them as i remember. Anger and anxiety have a close relationship with one another. ANxiety can occur as a suppressed anger, a severe disliking that is inescapable which then can also produce terror.
HCI also keeps most intestinal bacteria in the colon by inhibiting colonization in the small intestine. rosacea has been cured with small bowel sterilization by adminsitering antibiotics, as well as the ingestion of plastic pellets that increase intestinal transit time to below 30 hours, which then eradicated the small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
OK. I disagree with the update. I don't think it is warranted that we should discontinue with Betaine HCl and replace it with the more natural approach recommended. Instead we can take enzymes once you decide to taper off the Betaine supplement.
I think for me, no matter how much non-oral intake approach I do, I still break out whenever I consume ANYTHING WITH cow's MILK. I know for sure because the acne looks DIFFERENT, it's bigger, has pus and appears in different places other than the face, like scalp, back and chest.
NOW this can't be normal. I certainly probably lack something genetically to process this like other people do. Either that or I have intestinal hyperpermeability (leaky gut), or both.
okay so im starting with the hcl tablets, i have many of the symptoms of low stomach acidity so willing to give it a go, earlier this year i managed to reduce my severe acne to mild/moderate by not eating wheat
problem i have is i still get bloated after meals although nowhere near as much as ido with wheat. so il keep you guys updated. two tablets doesnt affect me so was thinking about starting strong and lowering rather than the opposite way around.
I know this is an old thread but I thought I'd mention that I saw a naturopath for the first time today and his approach is basically to restore stomach ph in the short term using Hcl. I'm excited to see results!
What is the strength of the Hcl pills? Did he mention anything about them raising your Hcl levels (i.e will they begin to raise by themselves if you take pills long enough)?
I've heard Hcl tablets can increase stomach acid secretions when you stop taking them, but I'd like to know what your naturopath said.
I believe they are supposed to raise HCl levels; he talked about restoring the Ph of my stomach to increase digestion and inhibit bacteria in the upper intestine. The pills are the Thorne brand 520mg/capsule and I'm supposed to slowly ramp up the dose during meals until I feel discomfort or 'heat' (they can be neutralized w a base).
After two weeks he would like to then have me take tons of probiotics to try to recolonize my intestines w mostly acidophilus. His diagnosis was based on a talk w him and certain points like my propensity to wake up in the middle of the night and be unable to sleep more and he also kind of pushed around on my stomach and noticed some tenderness which is very real. According to him, acne patients almost always have digestive issues.

So what, you're supposed to swallow bleach if it's too much?
I've started to take HCl recently, and it's helped me not burp so much after meals. I'll probably keep taking them if it inhibits bacterial growth in the upper intestine.

My PH is too high. I am overly Alkaline. I thought that most of the junkfood that acne sufferers eat and drink are too acidic. Is he saying that you're too acidic or too alkaline?
Unless you have had a PH test you should not take HCL supplements. I had the symptoms of low stomach acid too. Well I got the 24 hour ph test test done and I had too much acid (acid reflux) unfortunately.
I'm curious, what was the test that you took that measured your stomach pH?
Humans throughout history have never needed supplements. It's simple: consume salt. Salt is Sodium CHLORIDE. Thus, it helps hydroCHLORIC acid production.
Moreover, unless it's been demonstrated that you suffer from hypochlorhydria (the medical term for low stomach acid) it's not a great idea to be taking things you don't need.
