Acne is caused by over productive sebaceous glands that clog up the hair follicle causing bacteria to breed. Sebaceous gland activity is trigger by androgen hormones that become active during puberty. Genetics play a role in how large and productive sebaceous glands become. Acne does tend to run in families though there is not a clear pattern of inheritance. Meaning just because your parents had it does not always mean that you will and you could be the first in your family to get it. Diet has no influence in sebaceous gland activity or acne and medical studies have proved this. Sebaceous glands and hair follicles lie beneath the surface of your skin so how clean or how dirty the surface of skin is does not influence acne. Acne begins beneath the surface of the skin. I have had acne and have 100 percent cleared it for many years using prescription medication.

Topical tretinion cream, birth control pills, and oral isotretinion worked for me.

I had acne for 14 years and was only able to clear it up by overhauling my diet, so I'm afraid the above 100% is not true! The side effects of medications on long-term health are far-reaching and dangerous. Being on the pill for a decade caused me three separate health problems from oestrogen toxicity; one serious. Tons of controlled studies also show that acne patients have dramatically lower levels of various vitamins and minerals in the skin. My doctor even advised me to cut out dairy and sugar due to the medical profession's position, based on research!

I beg to differ. Prescription meds have just made my skin worse. I suffered from acne for 20 years before I changed my diet, which was the only thing that cleared my skin. Acne may be on the skin but it starts within the body and diet has a big role to play here.

Good for you then. I feel that each one of us is different and what works for you might not be the same case for me.
