Worsening Acne As A Result Of Juicing /diet Changes?

I know this question has probably been asked and reasked a million times but i need some input. A month ago i started juicing (see sig for more info) once a day. I have also cleaned up my diet (went paleo) for months. Within the past week, i took the suggestion of another poster in the holistic forum and started an eliminaton diet with just salmon, veggies (cooked and raw), sweet potatoes and loads of water. This week I have been breaking out horrendously (inflamed acne, more clogged pores, etc). Is this my body detoxing from juicing or what? I've cut on processed foods 100% for YEARS and added in lots of veggies, spices, sweet potatoes and fish.

What is going on with my face - definitely feeling discouraged.

Aww Leelowe,

sorry to hear you are breaking out. I will tell you, I started juicing about 2 months ago (I have stopped for about 2 weeks). And two month ago was when I noticed a lot more clogged pores and just break outs, but in really small spots. My mum suggested that it was the juicing, I was just juicing healthy stuff like a lot of spinach, kale, cucumbers, some fruits.

I thought it was a "detoxing" thing too, which does apparently exist from what I have read. But my skin is still like this, infact its worse than it was 2 months ago and even a month ago. So it couldn't have been the juicing.

Did you find you broke out at all when you were juicing, before this elimination diet?

What is your stress and sleep like? Do you have any other issues? Digestion? Allergies that you know of?

I juice too! well.... its in a blender- but its the same consis. and i like the fiber from blending than juicing. Anyways- i see a big connection in what i eat and my skin. I dont suffer from acne anyone..... but i cant say the same with my rosacea. My rosacea is so much more stubborn to treat. I wont get into the long novel i can write about it- how much water do you drink?? I had my yearly dr. appointment the other day- and my urine sample that you have to give (TMI) shows on a number scale how hydrated you are. The dr. said usually everyone is around 30 on that scale.- and he said "wow you are the lowest number i have ever had!" My number was a 5! I expected that because i drink so much freakin water. I drink around 1000 ML of water per 50 mins. I dont drink anything but water and my morning juicing. I cut out lots of foods too.

My breakfast in the morning is Quinoa (that i cooked the night before) i throw that in a pot with almond milk and slow cook it till it gets to a porriage consistancy. Sometimes i throw a Teaspoon of cinniman. And when i know its almost finished- i throw in half a diced pear, wild blueberries from my yard, and cut up almonds. To sweeten it either use honey or maple. Filling, but doesnt make me feel funky after. its gluten free too.

Did you find you broke out at all when you were juicing, before this elimination diet?

I always break out - everyday in fact. When i started juicing my breakouts were ok- a few at any given time but in the past week it has been multiples upon multiples everyday. Since coming off BP my acne has returned slowly and now its full blown, if this keeps up, i would be at the level i was before going on accutane. I was never able to pinpoint my route cause as i break out all over (forehead is the least worry-some area) but i've explored the detoxing liver thing, diet route, candida and i still have acne. My last course of accutane helped some but i never stopped breaking out on it ever.

So tired of this ish.

I really thought this juicing thing would be it too. I believe in detoxing but i don't believe in it happening for months on end with no relief in sight. The love vitamin said that detoxing should go in waves so it starts worse, improves, gets worse (but not as bad as it was in the beginning), improves until it goes away and healing begins.

What is your stress and sleep like? Do you have any other issues? Digestion? Allergies that you know of?

My sleep has been amazing since adding magnesium supplements as have my stress levels (even with the acne). I have seasonal allergies but those seemed to have cleared up i the past 2 months now that i think about it. I've taken many of the suggestions here and nothing has helped. My blood sugars are in check and i work out 3-5 days a week. Diet is in my sig.

I drink a ton of water- believe me. When i urinate, it's clear ALL THE TIME. I drink no less than 2 quarts per day so hydration is not my issue. I definitely think that coming off of BP may finally be catching up with me so i have an appt with my derm who can hopefully provide me with a topical that doesn't induce my eczema and actually works (the only topicals that have worked was BP as used in The Regimen)

You sound a lot like me! I have stopped juicing atm because my skin has been crazy lately. I honestly don't know what's going on. I eat a perfect diet and exercise like you, but I feel like it doesn't show when you look at my skin :(

I see you have not tried spiro. What is your reason for that? It clears me like accutane, but I can't take it because it makes my hair fall out. Many people don't have that side effect, though, and if I didn't I'd be on it forever.

I hear its for hormonal, cystic acne and i don't think i have that kind of acne (i rarely get cysts anymore). I also break out ALL THE TIME so i don't think it has anything to do with my period. I heard it will only work for true hormonal acne. What kind did you get when you were on it? Any pictures?

It is for hormonal acne. Hormonal acne does not necessarily mean cysts, only breaking out around your period, or only breaking out in certain places. My acne is definitely hormonal and I have acne all the time, everywhere, and I don't usually get cysts anymore. After 6 months on spiro I no longer had any acne. It even cleared up my oily skin and stubborn blackheads which only went away on accutane. I don't have any pictures because this was years ago, probably about 5. I really wish I could still take it or find some way to make the hair loss I get on it stop.

well i dont get this at all, with such diet shouldnt u be clearing up like crazy instead? O.o anyway, do u add any oils to ur foods? maybe u should make improvments with that? i think no more than 1 tbsp per meal is suggested but im not sure. its how my diet is at least. maybe its bcs of skins dependance on bp? without it its "getting loose" again?

I would think so too but maybe diet isn't my root cause. I'm going back to my derm on the 25th to try and find either topical, oral or combination of both (no BCP or antibiotics though)

I read your log. Your description here of breaking out all over implies a far worse problem than all those pictures show. Most likely, no one you encounter even sees that acne. No one is getting that close and they aren't focusing on each and every flaw like you do. So you should stop feeling so self conscious about it.

It looks like very mild acne and I think you should do very mild thing to treat it, especially since you are prone to excema.

Also, you described juicing 12 carrots? Plus a beet and the greens. I hope those are baby carrots. But even so the carrots and beets would make a pretty high glycemic drink. Are you having it with your meal to lower the glycemic impact?

You aren't the person that recently posted that you avoid laughing are you?

I have to agree with alternativista. I know it can be frustrating when people say your acne isn't bad, when you're constantly struggling with it. But seriously, if I look at your pictures I hardly see any acne. It's very mild and I think a lot of people on this forum will be jealous when they look at your skin.

If I were you I shouldn't use any new harsh topicals, just leave your skin alone for a while. The products aren't worth it.

No, that wasn't me. I get what you're saying and I hate how my acne dominates my life, especially since i remember what it was like to be clear for the most part. Needless to say, it may not look bad to others but it's distressing to me, especially since in my teens I had moderate acne and was put on accutane for it (this is something I am working to change so please don't judge me). They are big carrots and another member on here said that that the GI shouldn't be too bad (so many conflicting stories its hard to know what is right or wrong anymore). Needless to say, I am back to juicing 6 carrots and i drink the mixture in 2 separate doses on an empty stomach. I also started adding a tablespoon of coconut oil to it so hopefully that slows down the insulin spike.

I don't think products are bad but i do agree that harsh ones like BP and possible retinoids are not a good match for my highly sensitized skin. Acne is a very individualized thing and there will always be people worse off than me as well as those that are better off than me. I once had to deal with moderate acne that was cystic at times in my teens and that has stuck with me so any acne at this point is frustrating.

You could add some ground flax seed as a source of fat & fiber. But it's also estrogenic which helps some people but makes others worse, so watch for changes. And for many, it seems like it's really helping then the big breakout comes. Another option is chia seed for an omega 3 & beneficial fiber source that isn't estrogenic. But you have to add it shortly before you drink it or it will turn into pudding. Which could be good to.

If I were you, I'd try a little ACV diluted with green tea as a mildly exfoliant, DHT inhibiting plus PH restoring topical. You could have mint tea as a very mild anti-androgen. (and try applying it topically too)

Excema is another of the many skin conditions that have a deficiency of linoleic acid in the sebum at the source, btw. As is acne. Which is why I recommend oil cleansing or a light application of safflower or grapeseed oil. You could also take an oral GLA supplement.

I love love love chia seeds! I loved putting them in my smoothies too. I may alternate days where i put them in my green juices. It's funny you mentioned GLA supplements. I recently bought borage oil so i'll start that next week - see if it helps. Thanks for all the helpful input.
