Hi everyone! First post here. For the past few years I've gotten small clogged pores and whiteheads around the mouth area. My skin is sensitive and dry. I recently got some skin tests for food allergies and was reactive to dairy, eggs, wheat, hazelnuts, walnuts, peas and maybe corn (that's a lot of stuff!). Could this be the cause of my persistent breakouts in the mouth area? I don't eat nuts/peas often but I eat a lot of wheat (whole grain toast, wraps), occasional cheese, and baked goods made with dairy/wheat/eggs. I have an otherwise decent diet of lean proteins, almond milk, homemade juices of fruits and kale, etc.

Other symptoms I've dealt with are nausea, fatigue, very big/dark under-eye circles, dry/itchy skin, and mood problems (anxiety, sadness). Are these symptoms of food intolerance as well? Interested in your feedback. Thanks!

When it comes to acne around the mouth, the first thing to consider is toothpaste. Fluoride and sodium lauryl sulfate are both common offenders here. I would try switching to an all natural toothpaste without ingredients such as these, and see if it resolves. Food allergies could be involved, but it's less likely. Your other symptoms may be due to the wheat allergy in particular, as gluten interacts differently with the body than most food antigens.

Thanks for the response. I'm not new to trying out different toothpastes because of this though. I definitely avoid SLS but no longer fluoride since that made no difference for many months.

You may want to try a low fat whole foods diet while you are also avoiding the foods you are allergic to. Get blood work done to test for allergies as the skin test is not as complete or accurate as the blood test. I too tested allergic to foods (skin and blood tests) and had to avoid those foods for many years. Now I can eat them again as long as I don't eat them everyday. The only thing I can't eat at all now is dairy and shellfish. The biggest change I made in diet that helped my skin, in addition to avoiding dairy, was to avoid all oils and sugars. The only oil I eat now is a tiny bit of EVOO in cooking. Also try eating whole versus processed foods for awhile and see if that helps. That means not eating flour products but instead eating whole foods like oatmeal, rice, potatoes, etc. I too had lots of clogged pores and whiteheads around my mouth and these disappeared when I started avoiding all oils and oily foods.

There are far more important reasons to avoid flouride than acne. There's your thyroid function, your bones, your soft tissues you don't want calcified, etc.

To clarify, CVD eats high fat foods like salmon & avocados

Yes - I should have clarified...I eat some high fat foods but they are in the form of whole foods versus processed oils and fats. Some fat is necessary for health but it is added processed fats and oils that may be problematic. These kinds of fats are consumed too much and most have been produced with solvents. Western diets are loaded with added processed fats versus the kinds of fats traditionally eaten in cultures that don't get acne. Traditional diets got their fats from whole vegetables, wild fish and game. My thought is that the body was designed to use those kinds of fats in a better way than the kinds of fats derived from processing where oils are broken apart from their source with solvents and intensified. It is just an observation but at most I can eat a half an avocado in one day and maybe a piece of salmon and from that I am getting x amount of fat...but if I were to cover my salad in oil, saute my salmon in butters or oils, and eat a piece of cake I would be consuming a vast amount more of oil and fat than from an avocado or salmon.

It is just conjecture on my part but I think the amount of fats consumed and the type may cause changes in how sebum behaves. It is just my personal observation that when I stopped consuming added oils and fats my pores unclogged and I stopped getting any kind of pimples at all. The acne meds alone did not do this. It was when I started eating whole foods and especially when I stopped consuming processed oils and fats that my skin dramatically cleared. Just my experience. I find I can use a teensy tiny amount of EVOO in cooking...but it is less than 1/4 teaspoon for whole dish...and my skin is not bothered. This may be because EVOO has been in humans diets for eons and it is made without solvents. But it may be more because I use a negligable amount.
