My chronic acne had gone away after a body rash. But I started taking prednisone(steroids) to clear up another rash. 3 weeks in I got a horrible breakout literally over 100s of zits. One of the side effects of prednisone is acne. Differin has helped control my acne but pimples are still popping up just not by the 100s. Im slowly tapering off the prednisone just 2 tablets this week and 1 tablet next week. What vitamins or supplements do you recommend for me to take to control my acne or balance my hormones?
Prednisone raises blood sugar levels so foods that provide good coverage and do not raise your blood sugar extensively such as simple carbs; mild exercise might help. Adding in items such as chromium might help with the glucose levels although i do not have a decent drug book on hand that states any interactions with such medications so i cannot be sure. The interwebs is not always accurate; i do not have the subscription to the sites i used to either.I guess that's work to be done by you.
Since you are already aware that prednisone not only messes with your hormone (therefore requiring tapered doses) and raises blood sugar as a side effect leading to acne exacerbations I suggest a diet modification throughout the end of the treatment, maybe some chromium as well like i said. But going back to the hormonal balance i suggest you wait until the end of your treatment before starting something like saw palmetto or other hormonal acting agents as this will reduce risk of unwanted side effects as they will most likely interact. Other vitamins/minerals I cannot be sure. So while some might suggest brute force action i suggest to wait until the therapy is over (for safety reasons), but start something dietary related in the meantime. I believe that will help more.
In addition to screwing with.Blood sugar metabolism & thus just about everything to do with your health, Prednisone also weakens the epidermal barrier which makes your skin more problem prone in the long run. And I believe impairs thyroid function which means it affects your hormone. And it weakens bones.
Are the rashes really that bad?
What I recommend you do is eat and sleep right.
I'm sure there are less extreme drugs to take for rashes than prednisone, especially for long term use. Even some antibiotics would be preferable to prednisone if the rashes are so bad (provided you take some good quality probiotics with them, and take them for a short period of time). Does your doctor have any other alternatives to prednisone? Have you tried things like pure aloe vera topically to see if that helps the situation at all?
Are you male or female btw? Inositol might be able to get your blood sugar levels stabilized, especially if you have developed glucose intolerance. It also helps with hormonal balance in females (no studies done on male subjects, so I can't say how well it works on men).
Hi there!
I was on the same boat 4 years ago.
My skin was so irritated that skin rash would develop idopathically over my body and
my face was filled with acnes.
Now, my acnes and skin rash are completely gone after taking 20,000 iu/ day vitamin D for a year.
Plus, I changed my diet by eliminating all kind of sugars, keeping the intake proportion of protein to veggie & fruit in 1:3
Stop using prednisolone as it will weaken our immune system.
To defend ourself aginst acnes, we need to strengthen our immune cells.
