Right now I'm taking metformin to help with PCOS. The metformin has some side effects and I'd rather not be taking it, but it is helping my acne and oily skin. Would a low GI diet have similar effects to the metformin? COuld the effects possibly be better? I still have some oily skin and acne.
My sister is taking Metformin for her PCOS and honestly, it doesn't seem to be doing much for her. She does not really eat healthy at all, or balanced (ramen noodles, pizza, bagels, carbs carbs carbs) so that probably is another reason. She doesn't have problems with acne, but she is overweight and has eczema.
Personally, I would ditch the Metformin and choose some healthy, natural alternatives to control blood sugar. I have read that some people drink apple cider vinegar in replace of Metformin. I drink it every day. And, of course, a low GI diet is a must if you have blood sugar issues. Sweet potatoes are a good substitute for those staple carbs.
Plus, with a healthy diet, you'll get loads more benefits and none of the side effects.
Also, for your PCOS, have you heard of drinking mint tea? It might work, unless you have estrogen dominance. It inhibits the enzyme, 5-alpha reductase which converts hormones to DHT. If you do consider it, just drink it during your follicular phase (the first half of your cycle), otherwise it can cause irregularity.
