I am almost positive that I am lactose intolerant ( I could clear you out of a room with the gas I get some times) and usually go 2-3 days without taking a number 2. I have mild to moderate acne. Could I have leaky gut?

 

Also on the topic of food and acne, I believe the reason why teenagers get acne and not little kids is because by the time were teenagers we loose our ability to digest the lactose. Just my 2 cents :)

And sorry to say, but your theory about lactose intolerance and acne has no basis in the real world. After infancy most individuals stop producing the enzyme lactase, and therefore they can't digest lactose in milk. It has nothing to do with acne, please read the thread and links provided in this thread:-)

And people eating a western diet usually have some degree of leaky gut as we eat foods we aren't well adapted to. You don't have to experience gastrointestinal problems to have a leaky gut, it's just the term "leaky gut" that implies something more severe than a silent disorder. http://www.naturalne..._digestion.html

At first with pro and prebiotics things will get worse because of die off and all that your body is going through, just give it time!

UPDATE: Been Paleo 3.5 months now, and taking probiotics for about 3 weeks, asl well as drinking kefir, and

I recently added Sauerkraut. I recently hit the peak of my die off a week ago and a little inflamed, but thats only relative to how good my skin has been since probiotics. My skin is continuing to get clear and I FEEL better. My mind feel mores clear. I'm currently having stomach issues, have been for the past two days, and my skin is still improving anyways! This route really is not a quick fix, but it puts your body in ideal health, and in the end is the most effective anti inflammatory regimen. I'll update again when I'm completely clear, most likely in 1-2 weeks, 3 if I cheat a bit!

I've been on this diet for 6-7 weeks now, i'm not sure if it's helped or it's just the 5 month of accutane which has helped clear me up. One really important thing people should know on this diet is that it can trigger a large insulin response. It's a bitch it seems, i used only think that insulin was related to sugar (which is banned on this diet) but apparently not. The yogurt especially can have a bigger insulin response than pasta, and as every kid knows their abcs every acne.org member knows that insulin is an asshole. That is because most yogurts are added with lots of sugar and flavors. 1 Activa yogurt has about 18g of sugar, which is a lot. Real yogurts or real kefirs along don't taste like that, they taste very sour.

Kefir on the other hand is different if you are making one yourself at home, plus due to the culturing, even lactose starts to disappear in kefir. Lifeway kefir plain doesn't have much added sugar, or not enough to cause an insulin spike. Eating a food above around 18 g of sugar per serving is said to trigger an insulin response, you can obviously slow that by eating fats and fibers along with it.

you can never assume when it comes to acne but i assume so. If yogurt causes such a spike then it must be partially responsible for the little acne i have left.

I don't know if i am, my acne has been reduced but it seems that insulin response is not entirely dependent on the gi of the food or the sugar content. I'm talking about unsweetened dairy products, beef and very protein rich foods have a high insulin response, look at this chart: http://www.mendosa.com/insulin_index.htm

despite this, i had over 10 bananas in one day without a breakout, so insulin may not be the antichrist hormone as everyone suggests, i don't think it's very harmful to eat a food with a high response, as long as it's not common place.

BTW how old are you? I've reduced my acne loads but i can't shift it, i'm thinking it must be because i may still be going through puberty at 17.

I don't see any problem with insulin. I can eat honey all day and not get a single spot, but if I eat rice, I might get a few. This is because the sugars in honey are rapidly absorbed, while the starch in rice takes longer, and more of it is left over for the bacteria.

Hmm I'm not sure where to send you, I've sort of pieced this together through scouring the internet. Also, everyone seems to have their own opinion on the cause of acne 😛 Myself included. Course, there's more than one cause, and each case is a little different.

This website in particular has a lot of useful information on it:

I don't think it mentions acne once, but if your acne is a gut problem then this might help. From the sound of it, though, you might be sensitive to something in yogurt, probably one of the proteins (casein?). It might be worth mentioning that yogurt and kefir have one big difference - lactose content. Yogurt has more lactose than kefir. If you break out on yogurt, and then break out less or not at all on kefir, then the problem is gut related (lactose feeds bacteria). If you break out equally on both, it's probably a food sensitivity.

You can narrow this down further by testing greek vs non-greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is simply normal yogurt that is strained to remove a large portion of its whey. If you are sensitive to whey, the normal yogurt will break you out more than the greek yogurt. If they break you out equally, you might be sensitive to casein or another milk protein.

What i am doing at the moment is (been following no dairy for a year now and the restant procedures since last week): no grains + no legumes(beans and peas) + no dairy (except eggs) + try to learn how to make fermented foods that i can add (sauerkraut) + starting live cultures (kefir and kombucha).

What i would like to ask the opener is: if the procedure that i'm following is correct, any suggestions, opinions on other foods like potatoes starchs fruits(citrus and bananas) and nightshade vegetables - should i avoid these or just stick to no grains and no legumes, and if he can give an example of an average day of his treatment (diet+supplementation).

Check out The Gut Diet on gutflora.com, that's the diet I follow. During my 5-6 years of acne struggles I have learned that this is the best dietary recommandations; which are based on science and evolution. And believe me, I've tried a lot.

It is pretty much The Paleo Diet. The foods we have evolved to eat:)

Your diet sounds great but you should add a lot of probiotic supplements and properly fermented foods:)

Prebiotics are also vital!!

Avoid sweet fruits in the beginning. Nightshades are rarely a problem, unless you eat green tomatoes:)

The thing you have to understand is the following:

"No" foods cause acne in themselves. Grains, sugar, legumes, vegetable oils etc. can cause inflammation through a variety of mechanisms (omega 6, anti-nutrients, high-density carbs++) In individuals who already have a dysfunctional gut flora, leaky gut and are prone to acne; consumption of these foods will make acne worse.

Paleolithic foods (meat, fish, fowl, eggs, berries, vegetables, fruits, nuts ++) will only make acne worse if you are unable to digest them properly due to poor gut flora (food intolerance, poor digestion) and leaky gut.

If you are able to restore a healthy gut flora and healthy intestinal lining you should be able to digest "everything"; although it's best to avoid grains, sugar ++.

Back to your question: The reason it's recommended to avoid sweet and starchy foods in the beginning is because when you have a dysfunctional gut flora; these foods might contribute to the growth of candida, LPS-containing bacteria and other unwanted microbes.

However, potatoes are rarely a problem:)

Stick to The Gut Diet for 3 months and you won't look back!

Also, if these studies were true and dysbacteriosis were a cause of acne, then it would explain why antibiotics help. But it would also be plausible that a strong course of antibiotics should also CURE acne, given that you repopulated with good flora afterwards

You have a dysfunctional gut flora! How can I tell? The fact that you're having problems digesting fermented foods and using probiotics means that you're gut reacts to new types of beneficial microbes.

You have to do the following: Start very slow with fermented foods and probiotics. Stick with it even though you experience IBS symptoms and slowly increase the quantity. Then slowly introduce prebiotics.

And you are incorrect about antibiotics. 100+ different types of microbes are necessary for proper digestion. Antibiotics kill a lot of these and in the long term mak acne worse. Antibiotics probably work against acne when you are on them because they reduce inflammation, and kill certain bacteria that are overgrowing. e.g. LPS-containing bacteria which contribute to inflammation.

People with candida overgrowth usually have digestive problems. Since beneficial flora keep candida under control, candida overgrowth happens if there's a severe decline in beneficial microbes, which will manifest itself with poor bowel movements and symptoms of food intolerance.

Most people only have a moderate case of dysfunctional gut flora and leaky gut; with little-no gastrointestinal problems and "no" candida issues.That's why I say most people can get away with doing the paleo diet/the gut diet + several sources of prebiotics and probiotics. It's only people with candida and gastrointestinal problems that might have to use antifungals and limit all carbohydrate rich foods (including fruits) to kill candida and other overgrown microorganisms.

I do eat fruits now:) If you don't have candida, gastrointestinal problems or sweet cravings you can eat fruits without a problem.

Don't make it the staple of your diet, but 2-4 fruits a day is no problem! This doesn't include coconut and avocado which most people can eat in abundance if they want:-)

What type of prebiotic and probiotic sources are you using? How long have you been on them?

I don't have sweet cravings, I don't eat any sugar except for low IG fruits. I'm not taking probiotics now. I used to take probiotics in pills only. I don't wanna eat dairy, even fermented dairy like kefir or natural yogurt. I could take probiotic in pills but I don't know if it's ok :)
