Is it a good idea to do a bacteriological analysis of stool?
There is something wrong with my digestion. Fruits give me bloating, stinky gases, less firm stool and I feel like having a balloon instead of stomach after eating plenty of them and stay that way for many hours. I didn't notice such symptoms after consuming nuts or coconut flakes. In addition my tongue is white
However, I don't want to stick with any diet at random, I'd like to know the certain cause of my digestion problems. How can I found out about my gut's condition? Is the stool test i mentioned above a good option?
Awesome illustration. I basically had all of the factors they list. Ultra clean lifestyle (I grew up with my mom pounding it into our heads that if you didn't constantly wash your hands, you'd get sick), poor diet (practically lived on beans and gluten as a kid), antibiotics and Nsaids (dr recommended I take Nsaids every day after an injury to reduce inflammation when I was maybe 8 years old, I also did many courses of antibiotics because I had a poor immune system and would constantly get bronchitis), disease (I believe I was born gluten intolerant/celiac), and severe stress (I HATED school and was bullied pretty badly as a kid, lived every day in terror basically).
When I look at this picture, it's like DUH I got sick. DUH!
I feel I'm on the right path to healing now, and I'm really thankful to you White Fox. For whatever reason, this thread made things clear to me. I already knew to avoid all the foods I was intolerant to, but my intolerances just kept getting worse and worse. I now believe that probiotics were the missing piece the entire time. Before this thread, I had shrugged them off as just another thing I was intolerant to. Thank you so much for helping me see that I was wrong about that.
I had my second big full glass of water kefir yesterday and felt EXCELLENT afterwards. Seriously, the stuff gives me so much energy and just pumps me full of vitality. I'm hoping to start having two glasses a day before long.
That's a lot of damage, no wonder you have acne, food intolerance etc. It takes a lot of patience and persistance for people like us, with severe gut dysbiosis, to get better. People with mild-moderate acne and few other health conserns will however improve in just 2-3 months (
"outofoptions" who posted above even started to see good improvement in just 1 month)
And I totally know how you feel. I spent several years trying to avoid certain foods I felt I had an intolerance to and trying various measures to improve acne. I knew there was something wrong with me, but I had no idea what the problem really was.
The issue with most of the treatments suggested for acne is the lack of "science" supporting them. People seem to recommend various stuff without having any idea how and why it's supposed to improve acne.
i agree with everything in this thread. I just think its difficult to fix for most people.
I washed my hands everyday with soap (afraid of breaking out). I don't use soap anymore, only after taking a number 2... but even then, is it necessary? I dont use any type of soap in the shower, only place i use it is on my hands
I always had chronic stress
I took antibiotics only once for 4 months (for acne.. i believe this is the major cause of my problems)
I disagree, for most people it's not that difficult to fix. It's very hard to treat for people like myself who had severe gut dysbiosis. Most people with acne and no, or mild, gastrointestinal problems will usually improve after just 2-3 months if they follow the plan in post 1.

It's not necessary to do a bacteriological analysis. I actually did one myself before I started with this whole thing. It won't tell you anything you don't already know. Your symptoms are classic signs of poor gut flora.
And you're not following a diet at random, all of the foods in the recommended diet is included/excluded for a reason.
Good luck:)
Your symptoms are classic signs of poor gut flora.
I know, but they also suggest many other diseases. And that is the problem: there are so many options that I don't know which one I should focus on. In some diseases they say to reduce fat, in other they advice to cut out carbs and i got my mind fucked. I don't want to do myself harm by sticking with diet that is inappropriate in my case.
That is why I want to do a stool test to be 100% thay my gut flora is imbalanced. I'm also going to test my white tongue, maybe it's all about a yeast infection. Unfortunately, I find it a bit difficult as healt service in my country doesn't give a shit about patients and probably I'll have to pay for these BASIC tests myself.
Until I get the results I'm only going to introduce kefir into my diet. I know it's not much but enough for a good start.
thanks for your reply.
When can I expect to get better?
I feel the answer to this question is worth repeating (it's also in the first post).
Most people will begin to see great improvement 2 weeks-2 months after they have
- Followed the diet for a couple of months
- Adjusted to several sources of probiotics and prebiotics (e.g. raw sauerkraut, kefir, probiotic supplements, prebiotic supplement)
- Achieved great digestion. Regular nice BMs
- No food intolerances
No sooner and no later. When you can put a green check beside all of these lines you have achieved a healthier gut flora and intestinal lining. Inflammation goes down and acne improves:)
For individuals with no, or only mild, gastrointestinal problems this usually happens after just a couple of months (2-4). It will always take longer for people with severe gut dysbiosis, candida overgrowth etc.
I'm just getting ready to begin introducing kombucha, probably tomorrow afternoon. I'm excited because it says on the bottle that it contains bacillus coagulans, and Saccharomyces boulardii and I'm finding out cool things about these two.
- Spore-producing Bacillus coagulans is a unique probiotic that has been found to be superior to other probiotics in terms of surviving the gastric environment, colonizing the intestines, and producing lactic acid.
- Emerging research suggests that Bacillus coagulans holds promise in boosting immunity and in averting conditions such as hyperlipidemia, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohns disease, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
And about the other...
"S. boulardii has been shown to maintain and restore[citation needed] the natural flora in the large and small intestine; it is classified as a probiotic. However, in immunocompromised and immunosupressed patients, it can cause disease in the form of a systemic blood infection, fungemia, or localized infection."
^I wonder if this is why drinking a ton of it, when my gut and health were in really bad shape, made me sick. I'm interested to see if now it will do good for me.
Hey Tim, I haven't actually tried the ginger yet. I'll pick some up when I go to the market tomorrow. For now I've just been using brown sugar and YES they are multiplying faster than I can possibly use them. What started as one spoonful has become two tupperwares full that I'm storing in the fridge because I simply can't make that much kefir. I have one friend who might want to take some of them off my hands, but all my other friends don't want any because they say making it will be too much trouble and they will just end up letting them die.
I'm kind of debating trying to sell them on ebay at this point, but I'd have to sell them for so cheap it might be more trouble than it's worth. Maybe now that I know I can tolerate it I'll just start drinking three glasses a day or something. If I drank that much I could probably keep up with what I'm making. I'm going to buy a bunch of mason jars tomorrow so I can start fermenting things on a larger scale.
I really love making living foods. It's kind of becoming a part of my spirituality. Everywhere you look in my kitchen there are colorful jars of kimchi, sauerkraut, sprouts and water kefir. They are my babies!
Really cool Deja! I'm glad it's working so well for you. Have you tried eating some of the grains like probiotic capsules? I've read of people doing that along with the kefir drink, sort of like a super delivery system. What recipe do you use for the kimchi? It's so awesome to see all the fermented foods on the counter! I feel the same way about my fermented foods! When you make things yourself, I think there's a bigger attachment and appreciation of those foods throughout the family/people who consume it.
WhiteFox,
That graphic is quite an eye opener. I knew I didn't have a good diet/lifestyle, but only recently have I looked back on how I grew up - which made me realize that things were probably worse than I initially thought. Thankfully I've been eating good for quite some time, including probiotic foods, but nothing like I have been seen reading your thread, which made me much more aware of fermented foods, gut flora, and all that good stuff.
I, similar to Deja and probably others, ate a SAD of fast food and hardly any vegetables besides corn and potatos. Even fruits were pretty rare for me. I drank a lot of milk, back when rbst and all that stuff was allowed. I was routinely on antibiotics, and routinely sick. I had severe allergies for most of my life. I was told to take NSAIDS daily by my doctor for neck/back pain I had. Lots of stress, and lots of purell hand sanitizer.
Thankfully, most of those symptoms went aware or greatly reduced when I started following a paleo-inspired diet, but I was still prone to little breakouts here and there, and initially I was very sensitive to foods that broke me out. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out over time, sticking to high amounts of probiotics and prebiotics, fermented foods, and quality things like grass fed beef/butter/marrow etc.
Updates:
I found a local farmer that sells grass fed pastured raw goat milk! I'm going to go out to their farm to see more beyond the pictures. If it's up to par, I'll kefir it. It's cheaper than buying the goat kefir from the store. I'm also going to ask about colostrum once I'm a regular customer of theirs. it's $10 for 64 ounces, so about 3 bucks more than raw cow's milk.
I ordered some water kefir grains, super excited to try that out! I also bought some blackstrip molasses to use for the water kefir. It's pretty mineral dense, so I'm glad to trade most of the sugar for probiotics + mineral powerhouse! woop woop!
one question: why is cocoa in the group of "no restrictions" products although it contains quite a good amount of carbs?
Does it mean that I can eat f.e. 100g of cocoa, which would give me 50 grams of carbs, and not worry?
i think it's only processed cacao powder that contains as much as 50 grams of carbs, cacao mass/beans etc. has nowhere near that much carbohydrate.

That makes sense. Thanks for answer.
Today I'm starting the gut diet. Still have some problems with getting 2500 calories from foods that I can eat but I think that soon I'll learn how to compose my meals so they gave me enough energy.
// I ate some bread today in the morning. In the afternoon I came out with a pain in my abdomen. That sucks.

You should have no problem getting 2500 calories from food you can eat. Just eat a lot of fat from butter, avocado, meat, fish, olive oil, coconut oil, GHEE ++ and you'll be fine:)
Good luck, and keep us updated on your progress:)
I'm on my 3 day of taking 2 billion cfu of power dophilus with activated charcoal atleast 2 hours after taking probiotics and over a week of slowly introducing raw sauerkraut from whole foods. What I noticed that the probiotic supplement did was give me green stool..how come? And I assume that random things like ears starting to itch and get drenched in wax and feeling hot at random times is also just a die off symptom? Btw Ive been paleo low carb 70-90 grams of carbs from plantain mostly for around 3 months now. Ive been eating asparagus as prebiotcs. Do I sound like I'm on the right path?

Hi! It sounds like you are on the right path. I have no knowledge about that specific probiotic supplement, just switch to another one if you can't tolerate the one you are taking.
Just continue with the paleo diet (+some dairy is fine) and introduce several sources of probiotics (e.g., supplements, several fermented foods, "dirty" vegetables) and prebiotics and you'll be fine:)
I've also just started taking prebiotics/probiotics after being paleo for a while now. Been consuming raw sauerkraut and leeks as prebiotics. I hope it's the next step in the right direction to restoring my gut.
Will post about results after a few weeks.
Good! However, remember that sauerkraut only contains some beneficiacl bacteria. You should get some of the other sources mentioned above as well.
Alright good, im just going to keep it up and update my results on here for the benefit of everyone. I also wanna thank white fox btw, because you take time out of your life to help others very often even when you are done with your fight. I see something good here and when I start to see obvious improvement I will be hoping to make a thread on here about my experience and would reccomend others do so too so in that case we are expanding the awareness of this knowledge.
I had my first spoonful of kombucha yesterday. The strawberry kind! I was so delicious, even one watered down spoonful tasted strongly of strawberries. I'm going to have two spoonfuls today, along with more kefir.
I'm having some breakouts, but I think they are related to other things because they were happening before the kombucha. I;ve been having a lot of sprouted lentils and ground seeds again lately. If my breakouts don't get better, I'll stop those things and see if they are playing a role.
I'm also trying to determine whether really super spicy food plays a role. Sometimes it seems like it does, sometimes it doesn't. My problem is I am totally addicted to the heat and end up having extremely spicy food every day of the week if I let myself. I notice after I few days I start becoming really hot and itchy everywhere after meals. I wonder if that's because some of the heat from the cayenne is going through my leaky gut and into my body? Or maybe just because I'm heating my body up in general? Does anyone know the effects of very spicy food on someone with leaky gut?
I'm going to doing a liver flush tonight with a mostly raw/juice fast throughout today and tomorrow, so I will only be consuming raw, cooling foods for the next couple days. I'll stick to that plan and then reintroduce spicy foods on thursday and see the effect.
I am taking mega aciduphilus 1.5 billion bacteria per capsule i take it 2 times a day for 2 weeks now dont see any improvements on my skin yet -.- i eat vege and fruits no dairy . no sugar .. BUT i eat white rice -.- is it ok ? but i already switch to brownrice 2 days ago and my skin is healing from the old breakouts .
Does anyone know the effects of very spicy food on someone with leaky gut?
On the Gutflora.com site that WhiteFox listed it says under spices:
"One study showed that hot spices are linked to increased intestinal permeability (20). Eat in moderation if tolerated."
So I guess that could be an issue for you.

Interesting. That's what I suspected. It seems to only happen if I eat them every single meal for a couple days in a row, so I'll stick to enjoying spicy food a few times a week and see if it helps. I'm trying to add in more cooling foods like cucumber and watermelon to counter the spices I eat.

Sorry to burst your bubble but if you eat fruit then you eat sugar.
Also look on the back of labels you'll see how many say (of which are sugars)
It is very difficult not to have sugar in your diet.
As for white and brown rice.
Brown rice is more nutrient dense and digests slower than white rice. However the GI loads are practically identical so the insulin response is the same. Add in essential fats and protein and the GI is even lower due to the slower absorption rates.

One study can't really show anything.
The problem is with studies a lot of detail are often left to the way side and not take into account. It all does is scare monger people.
For example i read a Canadian study that showed eggs are bad for you and cause heart problems. However this study failed integrate all variables like the persons life style and what else was in their diet.
Eggs is one of the most nutrient dense foods there is loaded with protein, essential fats and good cholesterol. This is what is focused on because cholesterol is easy to measure.
My point is, one study isn't enough, multiple studies from different third parties are required before any concrete conclusion can be made.

As mentioned multiple times; just taking 1 probiotic supplement with a couple of probiotic strains will make no difference. Atleast not one with only 1,5 billion bacteria per capsule. Also, 2 weeks will make no difference.
Rice is okay, but you will get optimal results by only sticking to paleo-foods+butter and fermented dairy in the beginning!
For me I know that very hot spices are problematic.
Good luck:)
