I wish I knew more about the liver... I think the liver is key to a lot of people's health problems.
Anyways, I found a page here:
http://www.drugs.com/cdi/niacin-lovastatin.html
Today I just ate a grapefruit for lunch. Yesterday before bed I took 500mg of Niacin.
After eating the grapefruit, I feel a bit woozy and headachy, and I read on the above linked page that Grapefruit reacts with Niacin... something to keep in mind for the grapefruit lovers out there, it could be bad...
Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice at the same time you take Niacin/Lovastatin .Eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice may increase the amount of Niacin/Lovastatin in your blood, which may increase your risk for serious side effects. The risk may be greater with large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Avoid large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice (eg, more than one quart daily) while you are using Niacin/Lovastatin . Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about including grapefruit or grapefruit juice in your diet while you are taking Niacin/Lovastatin .
i am taking 500 mg of niacinimide (no flush)
does this work too for acne???
why do some people say this is harder on the liver???? if so, then why???
from http://yarchive.net/med/niacin.html
You've just about mentioned all the problems. Another is thattime-release niacin (nicotinic acid) can be hepatotoxic, so you really
should not be taking it without regular physician liver tox monitoring.
Niacinamide is, if anything, even more likely to be hepatotoxic, and as
you note, doesn't lower cholesterol.
Maybe there's more information there if you want to look into it... probably 500mg isn't going to be too bad, but if you're planning on using it for the rest of your life, you probably would want to read up on it...
so what is the safest type of niacin to take!?!?!?!? I am all confused noW!

What about Niacin (Inositol Nicotinate)?
Inositol Nicotinate is the BEST form of niacine for acne. It has no flush effects, and works with its antinflammatory effect without burning your skin!
if my acne gets worse ill ramp it up to 750mg.
Dont' do it. It's useless.
Very positive results were archivied with 300mg of niacine (100mg x3 daily). And the users that successed with this stuff are taking 400-500mg max dosage.
So if it works for you, 250-300mg are enough. If not, you could raise also to 2000mg, but it will not work simply 'cause it's not the cure for your acne!
Jumped down to the pharmacy today and grabbed some Thompsons Niacin (Nicotonic Aid 100mg) 100 tablets for $18.00 (NZD so about 9USD) however I can buy direct from Thompsons for a few dollars less but couldn't wait!
Anything bad with Nicotonic Acid? Mine is the flush type, and I just had 1 pill with a sandwich and water. Nothing as far as rashes yet, legs feelin a bit warm but thats prolly because I am sitting on them
Ill let you all know how it goes =)
(I plan to take 300mg today, at different stages, spread throughout 3 pills, and then 400mg tomorrow and 500mg next day, 500mg for a week, then 300mg from then on) I don't mind if I get a super bad flush from having lots.
EDIT: Got no flush after 30 mins, so took another, no flush after another 30 mins, took another, no flush after about 40 mins, and then after a little while (i didn't take yet another) my ears have started to get super hot and i can feel blood pulsing through them. Quite neat, i'd recommend the flush kind cos it may/may not help acne, but its bound to help something else
Hello everyone. I have been reading up on this thread and though I would try Niacin for myself. I am a 23 year old female and have acne for 10 years. I have oily skin, and hormonal acne that usually only appears around my lower cheeks and jaw line. I have tried almost everything under the sun except for accutane. I have found some relief in avoiding dairy but still get painful cysts. I took my first 500mg Niacin (no flush) tablet today with my lunch. I will update about my progress.
Hey guys.
Took a total of 800mg last night, just a little starter boost
Today I'll take 500mg, throughout the day, in 100mg pills. Does anybody recommend against having it spread through the day to reduce flushing? Should it all be taken at once.
I got the meanest flush last night, shivering and felt hot and moved even a little bit and I got a sunburn sensation.
I think it is working, I'll report back after this weekend.

I need to look into it some more but I believe it's best to take the Niacin all at once instead of trying to spread it out throughout the day. I believe it's harder on your liver that way because that would have to be the reason why they say not to take the sustained time release form of Niacin due to it being hard on your liver. Also, the flush is a good thing so you actually want to experience that but you can minimize the effects of it by building up your dosage slower and taking your Niacin right after you eat.
I take 2 x 100mg tablets in the morning and 3 at night. I'm still using BP so its hard to say what effect its had, although recently ive been breaking out a bit. Since I started the niacing I've only had one spot, which is a small one and may actually go away tomorrow the way it's looking. I've had a couple of blackheads that were inflamed but went down very quickly.
As I say, io don't know how much I can attribute to niacin, but I'll wait and see. It's the most balanced my skin has been for months.
Does it help with post acne red marks or anything like that or just active acne?
The guy in the adult acne forum has said that niacin has reduced 'what [he] thought was permanent scarring'. So I think that it definitely has that potential.
I consider mine rather permanent as well. Nothing has been working.
I'll pick up some non-flush Niacin and post back here with results on my post acne redness.
Sound good, guys?

Well if the flush is a good thing, technically it is best to just toughen up and get the biggest flush you can possibly get.. If the flush is beneficial, we really shouldn't try to minimize it.. Seems odd don't you recon??
Hmm, is it the sustained release form that has liver issues, or niacin being in there for a long period of time.. I'd like to know this.

Get some flush Niacin, you'll only flush for a little bit, it is not that bad, and it reassures you that it has worked, and for me, right after the flush, I noticed pimples were smaller. It may/may not have positive effects on acne, but it doesn't have negative so go for it!
We know the non flush works.. So no comparing needed. But the flush may help with other things, and it can actually become quite pleasant. Sitting in maths today with a nice warm flush, it is rather relaxing and yeah.
Just get the flush, flushes won't happen forever, and they could be beneficial, AND I read a study that non-flush has less available niacin than flush.
In some cases, non flush had 0% available niacin (usable niacin by the body) so go for flush, do yourself the favor.
Unless we have 2 people with the same acne and live in the same house, we can't really compare.
The non-flush won't be better (less available niacin, and the flush might be beneficial) and the flush is def better due to more niacin available, and maybe even more beneficial cos of the flush, so do yourself a favor and go for flush!

I took regular Niacin 500 mg a day for over a week and am now on 500 mg of Niacinamide a day for about a week, and it's finally getting better. On the Niacin, it seemed to heal my acne very well for maybe two days or so, and then got very inflamed again. It seems to be getting much better now, but I don't know if I would have been getting the same results from staying on Niacin.
I've been taking 500 mg of niacinamide (not no-flush niacin, actual niacinamide) for three days. My skin is usually very oily, especially my nose, but today it seemed somewhat better. This might be because I just started using a new soap, but I'll continue the niacinamide and see if things improve.

What type was your "regular" Niacin. Also what brand etc.
You don't get Niacin, you get Niacin in the form of .............. etc.

Things haven't already improved? I have improved a lot over one night, prolly wont happen for everyone but 3 days.. Hmm :s Maybe you have a shit brand... It is best to go for the best brand, most well known, etc.
Although it has only been one day I had to report back. I took 1 500mg no flush niacin yesterday. This morning my face doesn't look oily like it usually does and my red marks seem like they have faded a bit. The only thing that I question is whether being in the sun the last few days has skewed my results. I will take anotheer pill at lunch and report back tonight or tomorrow. I really hope its the Niacin that is working!
I have been on Niacin no flush 500mg for about 2 weeks now and i cannot really say if its really making my cheek acne (near nose under eyes) go away. My cheeks and forhead are still oily as ever. I wash every morning with cetaphil cleanser, and by noon im already shiny with oil. I use to wash morn and night but this was drying out my skin so i dont know what to do. I even tried moisturizer in the tzone area but still will get oily.

im also taking niacin and washing with cetaphil and i noticed that my face isnt as oily. im thinking that it may be because i dont wash my face with water and cetaphil. i just rub on the cetaphil and pat dry a little bit but let some stay on my face and dry up. it makes my skin so clean and less oily.
