I've read a couple of studies and both agree that high triglyceride levels have a lot to do with some forms if not all acne. I'm guessing this is why Niacin works so well as it lowers triglyceride levels. What's ironic is that Accutane, the most powerful drug for acne, raises triglyceride levels which is why bloodwork is mandatory when you're taking it.
I havent posted in a while because I was on vacation in costa rica... but... I have been taking inositol hexaniacinate (500 mg a day) no flush niacin for about 2 weeks now. After about 2 days of taking the pills my skin was looking better and the oiliness of my skin had definitely declined. I didn't get any new cysts after I started taking the pills. Off I go to costa rica with better skin! woo hoo! UNTIL...... my luggage was lost on the way to costa rica and I had to go a day without Niacin. When I woke up the next morning I had two HUGE cysts. I got my luggage late in the day and took a pill right away (500mg a day). My 2 cysts healed faster than normal and now I haven't had a noteworthy zit since I started taking the pills again. I wonder if it is a coincidence that I got those 2 cysts that next day after not having the niacin in my body or if the niacin is really working. It is hard to tell because I also got my monthly cycle on vacation and that always brings on the zits. I got 2 tiny whiteheads yesterday but nothing to fuss over (I haven't had a whitehead since puberty! (im in my 20's). I would rather have whiteheads any day over cysts. I will keep everyone updated but so far I think that this is helping my skin.
hmmm... i havent felt dried out really... but i have very oily skin to begin with and i actually think the niacin is helping that problem. So maybe it is making my skin drier but it doesnt seem that way because my face was oily to begin with.
sorry this is off topic. but how come I can't change my picture? I pick a picture on the settings page and then scroll to the bottom and select update settings but this faceless, emotionless blue man keeps popping up for my picture. can anyone help me?
Hello,,, I was on the anti candida diet for about 5 weeks with some improvements. I then found this niacin post. I've been taking that for about 10 days. During that time I went on vacation and drank beer nearly everynight, which is said to be one of the worst things for candida. During that week, i got alot of sun also. My skin stayed nearly clear, a small pimple or 2. Two days ago I got a pretty decent size pimple, but nothing horrible. I remained on the candida diet with the niacin. I've also been on Tetracycline 1 a day 50mg. I think the tetra has begun to lose it's affects as I've been on it a while. I will probably try going off the tetra and see what happens.
My acne was mild but cystic, (and pretty oily skin) Since the start of the candida diet and niacin the cysts have been much better, and Although it's still early I believe the Niacin really put it over the top in a good way. I will report back in another week or so.
On a scale from 1-10 i would give the Niacin (the flush kind) a 9, so far
I've been taking 500 mgs of inositol hexawhatever at night for a few weeks now, and I'm not sure if it's helping my acne or not, but my body feels all dried out now. My eyes and mouth are especially dry. Is this a side effect of niacin?
I'm experiencing drier/flakier skin than usual, but I don't think that's the kind of dryness you're talking about.
i used to take my niacin at night but now im gonna take it after breakfast. i figured if it helps metabolize proteins, fats, and carbs then why not take it after i eat breakfast and it'll help with all the other meals i eat during the day. plus since it makes my skin drier than usual it'll stop breakouts during the day.
I'm on my third week; my skin is 100% clear. Ive been taking no flush once a day. I'll take a picture once I have time. My skin have never dried out; you guys just don't use enough lotion. I use lo'real hydra creme about (costs about 7 bucks) twice a day.
= inositol hexanicotinate?
Looks like that stuff works... I'm getting some this week and I have high hopes..
I've been on no-flush niacin (as inositol hexanicotinate) for almost three weeks now, and I'm suddenly beginning to see an improvement. I've also made a recipe I found for applying niacinamide topically that I thought I'd share. I found several links that discussed its use was far more effective when applied topically. I'm on my third day of applying it to my whole face twice a day, and it seems to be working rather quickly! Here's the formula:
2-oz Aloe Vera gel (I'm using Trader Joe's brand, $2)
5 capsules of 500mg Niacinamide (I'm using Vitamin Shoppe's brand, $6)
Measure out the aloe into a bowl, and break open 5 capsules straight into the gel. Stir it with a spoon. It will turn a clear, almost white color. I used an old face cream jar to store it in. Supposedly, this amount will last for 6 weeks, so this is really, really cheap! Smooth it all over your face in a circular motion as you would any other cream or gel, and let it dry. No refrigeration required. I was also told that you should cease all other acne creams, lotions, whatever because this will take care of everything in one step. This is safe and all-natural, and because it's water-soluable, it won't build up in your system or cause any side effects. Like I said, I'm on day #3 and I'm surprised to see it working this well. It's non-irritating, non-drying, leaves behind no residue once dry, and you can still use sunblock, moisturizer, makeup, etc. over top without any trouble. At this point, I don't know if it's the Niacin alone or the homemade mixture alone, or both together creating success. The niacin pills weren't doing anything for me for the first two weeks, so maybe it just took time for them to build up in my system...or maybe it's the topical niacinamide that's actually doing the entire job. I'll keep you posted over the next few weeks, but I wanted to share the homemade recipe because, at that price, you've got nothing to lose, and who doesn't want a natural way to clear this freaking crap up once and for all?

Nope, my skin isn't really drying out, which is the strange part.
Btw, I've been dealing with mild yet PERSISTENT AS HELL acne for 24 years...and I'm going to be 40 in October. I can't tell you how sick to death I am of all this!!
wow i can't imagine. ive had acne for 6 years and its almost making me crazy. i dont remember the feeling of clear smooth skin on my face, i cant even imagine it because its been so long. hopefully niacin does something for you.

500 mg seems to be what people work their way up to from smaller amounts like 100 mg. So you can increase the dose over time and keep it at 500 mg when you reach that point. We build a resistance to the flush effect after a while, so don't worry if you don't like it.
I was wondering if niacin is helping anyone reduce mild non cystic acne?
I have mild acne, mostly non-inflamed with a few inflamed spots. This is one of the few supplements mentioned on these boards that I feel is safe to take and I have been able to find a vegetarian formula from a company that I trust. It is the non-flush kind (Inositol Hexanicotinate) and each pill is 250mg.
I see people are having an improvement with cystic acne. I have never had a cyst or nodule.
