i don't think the body will necessarily correct itself if left to it's own devices as it seems to be stressed on this thread. often times the body has the proper tools it needs and often times it will, be not always. there are defects and disease that cause distress on the body, plain and simple.
i'm not bashing the caveman thing, as i am currently doing it and my skin has been looking better in the form of less flakey-peeling skin - however i am still getting new cysts. and even whether the regimen is causing the less-peeling skin is a up to debate since i am taking septra and the decrease in activity might be why there is less dead skin peeling off.
i'm just adding that i don't think we should put absolute faith in the body's ability to repair itself in all instances [ie, this might not work for everyone, which should be obvious]. there are obviously serious diseases that only modern medicine can help with. i'm not saying acne is serious [other than cosmetically and likely psychologically], but it probably is a serious defect on our bodies' part and, obviously, isn't readily cured for the small number of us.
To the people trying/having success with this:
Are you shaving?
How often, what shaving cream, razor or electric?
Thanks
I shave once every 3 days. I shave under the neck with a razor and foam, but I never got pimples there anyway, maybe like one every 5-6 months so I don't really care. The other parts I use Phillips' brand electric shaver...but I use the portion you're supposed to use to fix your side burns and stuff. It doesn't give you a "smooth" shave, but it leaves the PERFECT amount of stubble on your face to look good yet not caveman like (how ironic) at the same time.
live in India for 4 years and even in villages people wash their faces with stuff, milk, oil, aloe vera, tumeric, even urine.
Look at those products, and look at the products people in the Western world use for acne and you'll realize why Western countries have a higher rate of acne among thier population in comparison to "developing" countries. I'm South Asian too, no one in my family has had acne cuz none of of em ever put anything on thier face other than water or maybe mustard oil in the case of my mom.
People aren't meant to get NODULAR acne and stuff like that. The more you try to suppress your acne with useless and counter-productive means such as oral antibiotics (the WORST possible thing someone could do), or a plethora of topicals day by day, the worse your skins going to react if its not compatiable with it, which, in most cases, it isnt.
Its so funny...there's people on this board using THREE things on thier skin per day, yet still bave acne problem. If you're using more than one thing on your face, you need to calm the eff down and get off your topicals. Hell, if you're struggling with acne and have been using topicals for as long as you can remember, get off your topicals and try this method out.
Like I said, you don't have to NOT WASH your face, modify it to your liking. I wash my face with water once a day, just splash it for like 10 seconds and I'm done. Ta-da!
however i am still getting new cysts. and even whether the regimen is causing the less-peeling skin is a up to debate since i am taking septra and the decrease in activity might be why there is less dead skin peeling off.
How long have you been doing it? Thing with me and Adam08 was that both of us had stopped using our topicals a LOONG time before this. I stopped using topicals in May of 2008. If you're used to using topicals and having cysts, than this is going to take a while to kick in, first and foremost...second, I'm like 2 months into this and I still get pimples here and there. I dont care for the pimples that I get, but I mean its not perfect by no means. Im not really looking for perfection, Im just glad I dont WORRY about my face. Half the times I just go to sleep without washing it, sometimes if I feel like it, I'll rinse it for 10 seconds.
Day 11: Still haven't washed it and my skin looks normal as with no flaking or anything. I just see dead skin on top of my chin but is very unoticeble. My skin is getting to the point where if I see a red blemish that I think will come up in the next day it simply dies down and never shows its face...incredible. Any pimple that I get is literally gone within 12hours and is so small. OH and yeah, my skin...looks incredible (the most noticeble thing on my face is from a breakout I had when using BP about a week and half ago). No more redness, no more oil! Yeaaa can you believe that, my face doesn't need anymore oil. Sure a little is there (and I am thankful for it because its job is to unclog pores naturally - something that dermos won't tell you $$$$$). DIET SHMIET... I have been eating chocolate and things everyone says not to and I still see no difference. This is how I see it... Why don't you drop the chemicals which say 'penetrates deep, etc' and do your entire body a favor. I read that those chemicals (BP,SA, blah!) will definetly penetrate deep. So deep that they go into your bloodstream and weaken some of your organs. I believe it since they are so powerful to suck you dry and give mice tumors... Well I don't even know if I should come back here. Not even been two weeks and I would call myself cured. I guess I will answer any questions for about a week or so then be gone. Hmmm I wonder when I will wash my face.
PS For those who have done accutane or any DRUG, this regimen can definetly not 100% guarantee you results simply because tane recks havic in all of your organs and kills all oil UNATURALLY. Look it up.
note: I still haven't shaved...hehe i've taken the caveman regimen to a new level. I'm also not a very harry 20 year old (only get a stache and small beard in about a week) I wouldn't mind the extra fur anyways ...chicks dig it.
I've been reading all of these no-washing threads on here and I'm seriously considering trying this method...
The only problem is that I have been on the DK regimen for 4 years now. It has cleared up my skin 95%, and I've been happy with it, but tbh I'm getting sick of doing it. I'm 26 years old and don't think I should have acne anymore like I did as a teen/early 20's. Plus it's expensive and sucking me dry. Oh and it makes my face red too.
So I was wondering - any experience from trying the caveman regimen after being on the bp regimen for years? I'm afraid if I just stop it cold turkey, the acne will just come back with a rebound effect because my skin has gotten so used to the bp. I have tried stopping the regimen a few times, or tried doing it only once per day (but still gently cleansing it twice a day) and after a week I'd break out like mad. I'm sure whether weaning off of it first will be effective because that'll probably just make me break out again.
Any ideas?

wow 4 years is definetly a lot. I suggest you ease off it, that is the only way... You definetly don't have an acid mantle at this point and one is definetly needed. I assume that your hormones should be in control at this age, yet an initial breakout I would say would have to take place because your skin is used to being sucked dry everyday. You would just have to think as positively about the situation and know that a little bit goes a long way in the long run. Just my thoughts even though the longest I used BP for at a time was for about 7 months (last year).
to those who think washing is key, i still disagree. in terms of preventing acne, i believe topicals are limited. My acne is hormonal. I know because ive tried deducing different variables of my lifestyle which sometimes vary and thus may be the cause to my acne, i still got acne. Until i come out of this stage i think i still will develop acne all over my body.(not as though i am plagued with acne, i just get it in many places). i also don't want to permanently damage my skin with topicals. To any reading this and still opt to use topicals, i suggest you at least find out what you are putting on your skin.
[Edited link out]
haha something has just popped into my head and I thought I would share. Basically, if animals had mirrors (yes a mirror that you stare at yourself and judge yourself) would they have acne? Think about it... when you look at yourself in the mirror and you see for example a breakout coming some may react like "ohhh no what will my piers think of me now...i'm so ugly, etc". Since animals don't really even exactly know what they look like, they simply don't have a clue say if they have dust on their face so therefor it's not on there mind 24/7 like acne may be for some of you. ie. for us who aren't washing our face... having to wash it and do something that 'the experts' say is a must daily is no longer on our mind. Just somethng that may sound stupid but I thought I would share since we share like 98% DNA with Chimpanzees and they seem to be doing fine without chemicals on there face Heh heh.
I'm going to add something to this discussion, that I've found interesting.
One of my housemates always has had small bouts of acne...like he would get a pimple once in a while. He never used anything on his face last year, from what I remember. This year, after a breakout, he started using Sepctro gel's line of BP or whatever they have. Funny thing is, last year he'd get a break out and then not get any serious pimples for another couple of weeks. This year however, since he's used the Spectro line, he's continually gotten pimples on an almost daily basis. It's really wierd to see the negative effect that acne "treatment" has on normal skin. The sad part is, once you fall into the trap of using them, you just want to keep trying different ones thinking your skin isnt "compatiable" with one product over another.
This dude is a consistent dude. He always eats the same ways, the same patterns, sleeps the same time everyday, wears the same clothes in the same order every week, so its NOT that he did something different with himself...the conclusion is the adding of the "treatment". But yeah, just an interesting pattern that I've noted. I swear to God, if EVERYONE on this site tried the "caveman regimen" for a while, we could extract the success rate of it and see the effectibility of using no topicals. At this point, I regret ever having let my face be exposed to any chemicals or skin irritants at all. Keep it simple.
I've noticed that too.
Now, when I used to wash my face religiously with cleanser and medicate, I always miss out my chin and the edges of my face due to the way I lather my face. While these areas are not completely ACNE free, they seldom get any problematic acne (just little zits that comes every once in a while).
My acne/redmark distribution follows a pattern of appearing in places I washed/medicated excessively.
Consider my mum never really had acne (she has THE perfect complexion and still looking good for her age), and my dad only had little to moderate acne until his mid-twenties, the only difference I can pinpoint are sugar intake, sleeping pattern and face wash/medication.
My sister too, has stubborn acne on places she's medicated on.
So I was wondering - any experience from trying the caveman regimen after being on the bp regimen for years? I wouldn't say for "years", but I experimented with clindamycin, differin, clindoxyl and benzamycin between 2005-2007. There were all succcessful in clearing me up, looking back, but they always had thier share of problems. Differin was the worst.
I used benzamycin from February of 2007 till May of 2008 and I was like 90% consistently clear while on it. I abruptly stopped BP because I seriously had a revalation while on this site that most of the people who consistently use BP or other topicals have had to consistently use it for the REST OF THIER LIFE. Look at the veteran members (I'm not knocking them, its an observation) - they are either on accutane, or are taking medication of some sort, and have had to take medication. The ones who have healed themselves naturally (i.e - the member who cured herself through smoothies), did it in a healthy manner without doing damage to thier skin topically.
Like it says in my sig, we're not MEANT to have serious acne beyond a certain point. "BLEMISHES" are a historical fact, but "ACNE" is a modern disease and "ACNE" is prevalent in the Western world more than any other place. Yet, this is where all the "advanced" treatment is....yeah, put two and two together. Sometimes, what you're told by the people that are trying to get as much money out of you as possible isn't always correct. Taking into the fact that no one in my family has acne, and the fact that I'm the only one who ever chose to go the "westernized" route instead of sticking to the stuff my dad had recommended ("just eat and sleep properly, and rinse with water"), I decided I need to experiment with the natural route.
I started by ditching BP and only used ACV on my face. - Still broke out
Then I only used cetaphil cleanser on my face mixed with tree tea oil. - Still broke out terribly
Then I resorted to just water and tree tea oil. - Still broke out terribly, started flaking
Then finally, down to just water. - Breakouts subsided, flaking increased...eventually, flaking subsided, and the breakouts are just minimal now.
This whole "natural experimentation" started in May of 2008 and I finally settled to a water/olive oil routine in October and haven't had to make adjustments since.
It was a long process of trial and error. Basically, my acne was aggravated by factors other than what I put on my face, so it didnt matter what I put on my face. In fact what I put on my face just AGGRAVATES the size of my pimples. Whereas I would normally get small sized pimples if I left my face alone , I would get huge pustules when I was "cleaning" my face the traditional way that ones taught by derms.
I would say to wean off BP slowly...like every other day, every 2 days, everyay 3 days, week by week, etc. Or you can go cold turkey. With the cold turkey approach, you're likely going to get a breakout into the second month of not using BP, as it happened to me as well as a lot of other people on the thread that this thread was originally based off of.
Let me update you guys on how this has been working for me. This is my Modified version;
At first I pretty much Only washed my face once a day, and I showered every 2/3 Days.
I couldn't handle that so this is what I do now;
6 Showers a Week
Wash face Once or MAX twice. Usually twice on weekends... Don't want to go out too greasy.
I also supplement with B50 complex and Pantothenic Acid... but only 500mg-1gram a day.
Omega 3's 1000mg x 3 times a day
This is the breakthrough......
I've noticed that when I have the oil sitting in my face... it actually brings down the inflammation of my pimples....Now, Sebum is 44% fatty acids in composition so when I up the Omega 3's I think it is making the concentration of fatty acids stronger in my sebum therefore also having more of an anti-inflammatory effect.
What has been troubling me;
MY FACE IS SO GREASY YETTT!!!!!THIS IS INSANE!! YET!!!! I sometimes don't get sleep for 2-3 days in a row because the entire night I spend itching the areas near my nose and my face overall.... It's almost like the sebum is drying my skin undernearth the oily surface, its very weird. Oh and naturally since I only use water after I take a shower there is a lot of white but not really flaky stuff around my pimples and around the areas that aren't exposed to sebum(areas like the cheeks, a bit in the chin, and a few other areas) however after like 10-20 minutes it fades and I look fine. This regime is nearly impossible to follow without Pantothenic acid if you have oily skin cause I nearly died the first couple weeks with out it. I FELT SO FREAKEN GREASY!!!!!! I am going to expriment with pantothine to see if I still get some hair thining. Hence why I am low dosing the acid right now ( thins my already gone hair from Vit-A mega-dose).
Oh and In the mornings if I don't take a shower I HAVE TO!!! use a cleaner, which is an Avalon Organic cleaner. It drys me face most of the time, but I can't not use it because my face is so flaky and all over the place I need to exfoliate it. However I only do this about 2 times a week.
Hope this Helped
Not to put down Dan's Regime or anything, but in my opinion its an abomination. Proactive is 100 times better but neverthless DONT USE THESE PRODUCTS!!!! ONLY ORGANIC IF YOU MUST!!!!!!!! Honestly the Dan's Regime tho for oily skin the biggest FAIL i've ever tried.
sowet hunz, your face is greasy cause it's being over washed. Oily skin is a result of irritated skin that's replacing what you're stripping it of in excess amounts. If you just really give the regimen a shot and go without washing your face, as much as it pains you, you will seriously see the results.
My face used to be a grease pit. It was not that way naturally. I haaaaated my skin, it was so frustrating. I felt gross and dirty all the time, my hair would stick to my face and make my acne 10x worse but I didn't even care anymore, I would take 2 showers a day and never felt clean because an hour later my face would be covered in oil again. I didn't realize my body was just protecting itself because I was being bad to it.
Even products that say they're natural often times still have ingredients that can make your skin dry and produce too much oil, so it's best not to use them.
Believe it or not aloe can clean and lock moisture into your skin and different fruits work as exfoliation. Try a ripened mashed banana mask for 5-7 minutes instead.
So I've been reading a lot on here and tried different eating methods, cleansing, facial regimens, etc. Recently been doing baking soda scrub, ACV, tea tree oil, etc. I think my face got really irritated and I broke out weirdly, like not how I normally do. I'm a girl so this is hard not wearing makeup. Done this regimen for 2 days now. I have seen the redness go down a lot and no new breakouts. My face is not oily at all, but kind of parched and a little flaky. I just use water and emu oil at night. In the morning I use about a 1:30 diluted ACV in water...more mental than actual ACV. Will try to stop the ACV at all soon. Has this worked for anyone still in their late teens? Will update soon.
NB: Long but if you're a girl who is interested in trying this, then read.
Hi people.
I'm female (obviously!) and have suffered from moderate acne for a number of years (4 or 5?) although it was never that bad until about 2 years ago. Anyway.
My skin now does not break out. I had a minor ... i dunno what you'd call it cos I wouldn't classify it as a break out... erm, disruption.... about two weeks ago.. that lasted maybe all of 48 hours and then i could hardly tell it had happened. So, yeah, my skin is about 80% improved on what it once was.
I've tried it all in my time. BP, differin, gentle cleansers, harsh cleansers, lots of moisturers for oily or dry or combo skin, ACV on the skin, oatmeal or natural scrubs, castor sugar scrubs, cheap hypoallergenic bar soap, expensive organic neem cream shit, toners, witch hazel, antibiotics, a myriad of supplements etc etc etc etc etc......
In the end, supplements wise, taurine zinc and a combination of omega 3s and 6s (with fish oil and evening primrose) calmed things down nicely.
Topically - the less i used, the better it got. I went down from harsh bar soaps twice a day to Nutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser (it's a cream one) that's definately not specified for acne... using that twice a day. Then to using it once a day (to take off mineral make up). Oh that's hte other thing. Switching from painting my face with nasty crap (ahem, foundation/councealer) to using a light coat of mineral foundation has been KEY. Anyway..
So I was cleansing at night with the extra gentle stuff and no cleansing in the morning. Then, if i didn't wear make up in the day, I just wouldn't cleanse at night. No water even. Oh this whole time my face would get wet in the shower so i guess i was washing with water in the shower.
Then i started really using as lil mineral powder as possible and as little cleanser as possible to remove it and then quickly wash the cleanser off. Then I just went 'f___ it' and decided that going bare faced (not even a light coat of mineral powder, NOTHING) was perhaps bearable at this stage since my acne was so calmed down, it was maybe the odd zit once in a while that was small and went away quickly, and the red marks of course. Damn those marks. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't give a toss about wearing any make up. But, alas...
So anyway. On Sunday night (it's now friday morning) i cleansed off my make up and decided that was it - no more doing anything to my face for at least a few weeks. Unfortunately on tuesday when I washed my hair my face got wet and i had to wash myf ace a bit with water... that actually put me back a few days, I'm sure of it. the redness came back after that and it felt dry and a bit irritated and didn't look so great.
let me just note at this point - WASHING WITH WATER IS NOT ACTUALLY FOLLOWING THIS REGIME. From what I gather, Adam and waterwater and whoever else abstained from water to begin with. So don't think you can still wash with water and somehow get away with it, cos that's not the regime and using water significantly reduces the chances of success with this regime.
So, anyway... apart from tuesday, I haven't washed my face at all. I have gone for a walk every day (so i've been sweating a bit) and to deal with this - being female and all - I chose a quiet week where I'm not so busy. I did go to the pub and a few other things and at these times I did things like wearing hats, wearing bright earrings and necklaces, wearing mascara, having a tiny bit of lip colour, making my hair nice and eye catching, and making sure the clothes I wore made me feel pretty. All these things made me almost completely forget that I wasn't wearing any make up. and this is a BIG DEAL to me. My boyfriend has seen me without make up a few times... and each time has scared the hell out of me. Well tonight I'm going to a concert with him... bare faced and all. I got complimented yesterday and today that I look pretty. So I'm jsut going to trust him and whoever else to like me even when blemishes are still visible.
-before I end on that line of thought, I truly believe most guys love the natural look. Guys know that everyone gets pimples now and then. They also know that skin aint perfect. it can be blotchy or freckley or have moles or be a bit shiny or a bit dry... they realise all this. Mostly they prefer to just see your actual face. Cover up doesn't really work anyway - because your skin doesn't look liek skin anymore, it looks painted and unless you pile it on it doesn't actually stop people from being able to tell you've got pimples. Natural quite honestly looks better when you're actually healthy inside.
Anyway - so whilst the overall tone and look of my skin is way better (I look fresher, more even, less irritated, redness or marks dont' stand out nearly as much, it doesn't look oily nor dry) the marks are still yet to fade away and i'm self conscious about it. Thing is, nobody else notices or hardly cares. Seriously. And each day I don't wash it or touch it at all, the more faded and normal-coloured they are and my skin just looks more and more like non-acned ppl. Like human skin It's quite incredible and exciting.
Point is... if you really want to do this, do it properly. You need to not wash it or touch it for as long as you can hold off, say 2 weeks. I plan on not touching or washing my face indefinately, bar maybe splashing it with water once a week or something. This will sound gross but I don't care - part of the acid mantle on the skin is made up of sweat. When I take a walk and sweat a bit, my skin looks better if I just let the oil and sweat stay on there. And then after sleeping without taking that stuff off my skin, it looks amazing first thing in the morning.
Oh the other thing - whenever I shower, it irritates my face as well. And since I'm having to go without make up (yes, this regime is more difficult for girls for that reason - I have to work next week and that is going to be mentally challenging, let me tell you!!) it's important I avoid anything that irritates it or makes it look bad whilst the acid mantle and skin in general is still repairing itself... so I haven't showered since tuesday. I do the basin wash - bit of hot soapy water, a face washer, and a sink.. I will of course shower in a few days to wash my hair.. in which case I'll just avoid wetting my face as much as i possibly can!
Hope this helps someone. I'll keep updating. I doubt i'll be putting anything on my skin any time soon, I'm absolutely sold on this one...
edit: oooooh forgot to add - stay out of the sun! Sun exposure directly on the face for maybea couple minutes is okay but anything else is NOT good when you have no acid mantle and even worse when you have red marks!!!!!!!!! Learnt this one the hard way.. but just trust me. Things are made a whole lot easier when your skin is repairing and you avoid the sun.
Hi everyone... just thought I would elaborate my situation. Yes, I'm female... and yes when I go out I do where makeup, I haven't yet managed to figure out how I will remove said makeup but am brainstorming as we speak... I'm considering using oils, that would seem most logical, no? Anyway, my skin "type" for anyone wanting to know is oily yet sensetive, and then I have moderate acne with typically up to atleast 5 pustules at any given time, they are mostly on my chin/jaw and cheeks. I also have whiteheads on my chin, black heads on my nose and cheeks, lots of red marks all over, and them clogged pores on my cheeks. In addition to this I have recently developed mild rocasea which I'm positive is due to all the harsh products, over washing etc. So... this should be very interesting to say the least. I'm begining tomorrow, tonight before bed I will wash for the last time with dans cleanser and cold water. Yes, I realize I'm jumping into things rather quikly but I don't have anywhere to go/be for a while so I'd rather just jump in now while I have the opportunity. Anyway, I'm hoping more then anything that my skin tone/texture will normalize. My skin looked great before I started using products, and I NEVER washed it... not ever. Of course though at some point in time the superficial mild acne I had got to me and I started whashing my face using all the chemical shit, it has been about 3 years sense this occurance and I'm just done with the cycle. My acne is now very moderate and just a mess... my neck and face look as though they are the skin of two different people. My neck being normal textured and tan, my face being ugh and red. So... enough rambling I guess. Just hoping this will mage things turn around long term, if not... accutane it is. Anyway, for now I'll keep you guys updated on the horrors and joys of this "experiment".
i'm telling you guys, again.
Just use cold/lukewarm water on your face. Many swimmers have perfectly fine and even glowing complexions. Water is not that bad for your skin. The culprit really is warm or HOT WATER. In hot water, your skin's natural moisturizing factors are more soluble...

I intend to use cold/lukewarm water every so often eventually... it's just for now I'm trying to repair my acid mantle and regulate oil etc etc.
P.S: Just came to let everyone know I will officially begin this tommorow not today. I was my hair every 2 or so days and today is one of those days so I just figured it would be better to start off with clean clean hair. Also, I intend to change my sheets and pillow cases before bed tonight, there not dirty, I'm just paranoid. So starting tommorow the experiment will officially begin. I haven't washed my face this morning though, I'll wash it with cold water and cleanser tonight again then no washing for the 10 days reccomended by Adam and waterwater.
P.S.S: From just washing with cold water, (normally I use warm/lukewarm) I have noticed a decrease in redness of the face last night and this morning.
Ughhhhhhh. I am SO oily already. It feels all nasty on my skin, my foreheads itching. My skin looks terrible. It's all red, and blotchy, little bumpies all over my forehead... granted they were there before, now just accentuated. Is it possible my sebum is bad??? Should I be taking fish oil etc?? HELP!
I'm on day 19 and have not used water once. The only breakouts I get now are around my mouth, but heal within a day. However, the flakes and scab-like spots are out of control. I have big patches of flakes that cover the areas under my eyes and next to my nose. I also have scab-like spots on my forehead. The flakes I have are not small flakes that can be easily wiped off. They are fairly big and almost stuck to my face. I would have to pick them off. And if I do pick it off, there is like a red scab under it. I hope my skin is just healing.
Does anyone have flakes similar to this? Also, do you think I should incorporate water now every few days or so?
