yeah, mike59, i agree. Keeping my mind of acne is one of the best things for me. I used to get stressed and paranoid about my acne. Imagining that people must be looking at my acne. I believe its called acne dysmorphia. Although i do have actual acne, most of the bother is in my mind. Not thinking about my skin has made me a lot calmer around others and has probably aided my skin overall
Just go about day as if you did not have acne. When you shower, do not "avoid" the water. Just take your dang shower and forget about the acne completely.
Exactly as it should be done. Best tip ever.
Does anyone know why people that do wash their faces with water or any type of cleanser don't have acne?.....and yet (if this works for us acne-people) we stay clear by the complete opposite?
Good question. I'm not too sure. I believe cleansing the face, in moderation, is not a bad thing. However, this 'regimen' works for me because i over washed my skin with all types of cleansers and oils. My skin didn't stand a chance really. Maybe one day when i don't have acne at all i will return to using a cleanser maybe once or twice a week. But for now i'm not going near it.
Plus, cosmetic manufacturers can't make a profit by telling people truths about skin care. It's free, like all good things in life.
yeah, that makes sense- they don't over-wash like us. i don't know why, but not thinking about it also seems to help....may just be in my head though
Guys you have to realize that some people are not prone to acne and no matter what they do, they will not break out. We need to stop comparing ourselves to people like that. Yes, overwashing, treating, exfoliating can irritate the skin and maybe even cause breakouts...HOWEVER I still think that certain products can be very helpful...look, back in the caveman days they didn't have pollution, birth control pills, plastic, McDonalds etc etc etc...if not washing or treating the face helps it is probably because the products that you were using originally were really bad for your skin...well, i'm happy for anyone that this works for, but I have to admit that I don't think this will work for a lot of people...

I never had severe acne... until I started putting junk on my face. As soon as I started putting things on my face to "treat" acne, all the acne got larger, more painful, and more prevalent.
Since I have stopped, the acne I get (if any) is tiny and painless.
Don't tell me this has nothing to do with not messing with my skin anymore. I never poked or picked my pimples either when I was using products.

ok...and if I use salicylic acid it makes me break out horribly and it gives me eczema...that does not mean that all topicals make my skin worse, in fact I've found topicals that really help. I've never tried the do-nothing method for any length of time, so I can't say for sure that it wouldn't work for me, but i have used only mild cleanser and moisturizer, no acne treatments, and guess what? after a few months of that my skin was a total oil and breakout mess...like I said, it's great it if works for you but I don't think that it will work for everyone.
The reason that I responded to that post is that this is the same sort of argument people use to say that diet doesn't effect acne (well sort of in reverse)..."well X eats ice cream and candy and french fries all day and has clear skin, therefore my diet doesn't effect my acne"...you guys are saying "X doesn't treat his face with anything and he doesn't have acne, so I shouldn't treat my face and I won't have acne..." Everyone is different, and some people are simply not prone to acne. The real proof is when people with BAD acne are able to get clear in this way, and I understand that there are a few on this board, but a few is not really proof to me. 10 or so people claimed to have gotten clear by taking DIM supplements, and when I took them they made me breakout quite badly (and i think this happened to several people)...only time and experimentation will tell...good luck to anyone trying this
Hey again guys; no new major breakouts aside from a few red dots and microscopic white heads. Still have my 3 pusptules; although ones just in healing stage, as I popped it (carefully) so basically I still have 2 pustules, I popped the other 2 but they didn't want to die... so now I'm just leaving them alone. My skins looking a little red today still, I don't look flakey at all, aside from one small small patch, but if I touch my face my skin feels flakey. When does the skin smooth out? Oh, and also I'm still oily . So, that's my update. I'm going to stick this out.

I completely understand what you mean. However, many of the people who claim "this doesn't for me" (you included) have no completely stopped EVERYTHING. Until you do a regimen in full for 2+ weeks, do not say it does not work for you.
So many people are just too scared to let go and try this (I was too), and that is why I am here saying what I am.
If you never had oily skin before acne, acne does not run in the family, and you do not have other skin diseases (eczema does NOT count here) then this is most likely going to help you. If not, who cares? What do any of you have to lose by attempting this method? A couple weeks of acne. By now you should be used to that.
The day I dropped everything was hard. The next day was even harder because I got a new zit. The next days after that it was like an instant fix. It has been over a month now for me and I am so happy with the results.

you might be on to something there...if you didn't have oily skin/bad acne to start with then this might be a good way to go...I know that I started getting oily skin when I was 12 or 13 and acne when i was 14. My dad had really bad acne through his early 20's, so I think I was kind of doomed from the start. I agree it might be worth a try, but I'm 98% clear with my current routine and don't want to give it up. I wouldn't be scared of a couple of weeks of acne, but I would be scared of the scarring. I tend to get bad cystic acne so I would have something to risk...
I really want to try this, but...I'm scared!
In order to do this regimen, I would have to stop wearing make-up as well and few people in this world have ever even seen me without makeup.
I have about 5 days in between my last final and my first day of work and I kind of want to give this a shot.
How long does this take to make your skin look presentable in public without makeup?
If I start washing my face with only water at day 1, do you think I would be out of the rashy/blotchy stage by day 5?
Could I get the same results if I use a gentle cleanser at night and just water in the mornings?

It was basically an instant fix for me. In Adam's case, I think he dealt with a lot of flakes. For me though, it was like ... bam instant change.
Hmm... it's only been like a month that I've known about this place (thank God I found it too! ) but this regimen is a bit appealing to me...
How long until you start seeing results? I really want to try this over my 2 week winter break...
Think 2 weeks is a good start?
I have extremely oily skin so I can't imagine going out to school without washing my face.
I'd have this oil slick on my face and people would be asking me wtf happened...
To anyone not sure about doing the regimen...go ahead. What's the worst that could happen? If you're on this site, you're suffering from acne. OBviously your products aren't of much help if you're still complaining about pimples. Do this regimen (or modify it to include water but stay "cleanser-free"), try it for atleast a month and see how you feel about it. I don't get what the big fuss is...like I said last time, some of you are making this WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more complicated than it needs to be. After you start doing this, you will start wondering WHY it was that you even used topicals in the first place.
Most of the people who haved tried this have had success (me, Adam, Snow, etc). We all have had our own ways of doing it but the key is to ditch everything you put on your face and the solution is... NOTHING. Stop being so damn clingy and get rid of your shit.
My face has stopped being oily. It looks normal. I used to have the kind of face that by 4 pm would be oily as hell.
However, don't expect it to be a cure all. Other factors (i.e - stress, sleep) could still affect you, but atleast through this you know if it was the topicals that's causing your pimples. I've figured out the cause to my pimples as being because of stress. Follow this regimen and sleep, eat and excercise right and you will be acne free...I'm pretty sure about that.
Like Snow said, a key to this regimen is that it gives you the freedom to believe that you never had any acne. No longer do you have to follow a strict plan...use water when you want, leave your face alone when you want. You feel normal and any pimples you get won't be that serious because chemicals aren't there to aggravate the problem.
People don't get nodules or cysts when they first get acne. People get nodules and cysts when they start using products to combat the initial acne that they get. Just food for thought and once again, read the bottom of my sig.
There still hasn't been one person who's PM'd me to answer the challenge in my sig:
"Link me/show me one person who grew out of thier acne while simultaneously putting on topicals and I'll take this off my signature."
This going to be my last post on this site...probably for a long time. I consider this regimen a success for me because my acne has been regulated to the point where I dont really notice it....basically, my skin looks "normal". Plus, I dont use anything on my face, and I dont follow a strict plan.
I have a bit of scarring left over from the past but scars fade over time so I don't worry about it too much.
Thanks to all the members who've helped me out, and I don't know where Adam disappeared, but I want to thank him for bringing my interest to this method and making me realize the things my Dad had told me when I was 14 and when I was getting my first pimples.
Let nature do its course and stop fucking around with your face so much. Leave it alone.
Good luck.
Hmm... I'm on day 4 or 5 of this so far, washing my face once with water every other day. I got a few zits here and there but nothing serious, and they have been healing as fast if not faster then when I used to use products. Right now my chin seems to be purging sebum or something... It looks pretty nasty since almost every pore on my chin is secreting it (its solid) any advice about what to do about it? I plan on just leaving it alone but I'm not sure how long it will take it to naturally come out completely. Has anyone else been experiencing this?
Okay, I'm going to give this a try for the 5 days where I don't have to go anywhere.
If my skin doesn't look good enough to be without makeup by the last day, I'm going to have to hang this up until summer time. I think this could work for me, though.
Acne does run in my family, but my little brother's acne is not half as bad as my own and he's smack in the middle of his teen years. I mean, his acne got BAD for a couple of years when he was 12 or 13, but over the past few of years, his skin has really healed on it's own, without the aid of any topicals or cleansers since he doesn't really use them. It makes me wonder if I would still even have this much acne if I hadn't damaged my face so much in the pursuit of clear skin.
I am Snow- are you eating whatever you want and do you wash with only water every now and then?
If "I am Snow" isn't getting acne with the regimen and still eating whatever he likes--
I'm totally switching.
NewDae- Yes, I eat whatever I want. I do not eat sweets or much fatty stuff, but that whole "gluten" thing... its gone. I eat pasta galore, red meats, all types of nuts, all that stuff that is supposed to be bad.
Mike59- time to switch bro.
Both of you should keep in mind that I still drink quite a bit of ACV. I pour about 5 spoon fulls (yeah, like a regular spoon) of acv into my half liter bottles of waters. I drink 3 of these a day.
However, aside from that, I eat anything I want, have horrible sleeping patterns, have regular sex, all that stuff that is supposedly bad for acne.

i've gotta admit, that is pretty awesome-thanks for the reply. i've been doing this for a while now but i have one problem...i shampoo every other day and feel as though some of the shampoo make get on my face so about every 48 hrs i splash my face with water for about 10 seconds....do you think that's cool or will it mess things up?
quick update peoples...
firstly. NB Sweating really helps. Don't use a towel or anything to wipe it off. Just leave it. improves the look of my skin quite quickly.
okay so.. things haven't been perfect, I won't lie. I had to work and cos I had a mini break out (from binging on candy full of artificial colours and other shit) i had to wear make up to work (just light coat of mineral powder) and tried to get it off with just water... yeah, don't do that. :-p...
so my skin was shit for a couple of days and relaly frustrated me, i put on some jojoba oil.. that made things worse (i'm not sposed to use jojoba oil cos of the salicylates.. anyway lesson learnt!) and so i had a day or so of using make up and then just cleansing at night with my extra gentle nutrogena cleanser... and then started back on the no washing at all regime. No water, nothing. Haven't had to wash my hair yet and i take lukewarm showers to further avoid aggrevating my skin whilst it's in the healing period. tomorrow i'm working again and i may have to wear make up again... i'm not worrying about it though, cos i've come to a decision.
in the case of women, this regime is difficult. there are complications due to make up and just the social expectation that we will look 'pretty' when we are out. instead of fretting heaps about having to look 100% clear and even without make up (whilst not washing) in order to go to work/ some event or special occasion... i'm just going to simply try my hardest to go as long as i can without washing until the time i have to wear a bit of make up, and just use the most gentle cleanser possible and try to use a small amount and quickly. basically, damage minimisation, i have no other choice... there's no point going back to washing all of the time even though i don't have to wear make up every day. so i'm stick to this regime as much as i can, basically. and my skin tone is really quite good. tonight i went out to dinner with no make up at all - it's getting easier, actually. i have two pimples well on the way out (so really it's just the red mark and a slight bump) and i hardly thought about it the entire time. it's a liberating feeling, let me tell you it's really hard at first... and it's still not 100% comfortable but it really does get easier the more you do it. and nobody has given a shit. my friends don't care.. neither does my boyfriend! work is a different matter, tho... as women are expected to take pride in their appearance blah blah blah... i can't go in there looking like i don't give a shit (which, whilst my skin is good it would still look like i did not respect my work place to not wear any foundation still).... but as things even out, which will take a lil longer as i can't stick to the regime for a month+ at a time... when things are 95% even, i'll even stop wearing foundation to work.. just a bit of mascara and that's it.
so, that's the plan.
with the hair washing... as an aside, and trying to take care of my hair and not put extra chemicals on my skin/ scalp, i've cut back to washing my hair once a week... this is like with the skin, it takes a bit of time for your body to adapt, to get used to it.. but it will work out if you give it some time. Nobody can tell any different with my hair (it did go a bit feral for a week or two tho)... so my advice is to keep shampooing and showering in general to a minimum and a need-only basis. also, dunno if i'm especially skilled or whatever (lol) - i have long hair and i can avoid getting much water on my face if i tip my head right back and am careful about it... it is a bit awkward though.
good luck everyone! i'll continue to update... skin tone, overall, is way better. [oh .. one thing tho.. i was out in the sun a lot yesterday, i wore a hat to avoid my red marks getting burnt... it did a pretty good job but my skin's a bit dry today :-/ .. oh well. it's all about just trying to do the best i can. i refuse to 'throw in the towel' anymore. slow and steady. all that shit!]

Mike...
Look at my post #227 on page 12. Do not think so far into this. This is not a regimen... this is freedom from regimens. You all think there is some magical touch to this. There is not. Drop all your acne crap, do your thing, and just forget about acne. I take 1-2 showers a day because I work out/run and also take one in the mornings. Plenty of water hits my face, soap hits my face, whatever.
The entire idea here is to just stop trying to control it. Today, I am 100% clear. This is something that has not happened in a long time. I eat whatever (with in reason because I still try to stay in shape), I get sweaty and sometimes I wipe it, sometimes I don't, I sleep when I am tired, I eat when I am hungry...
In the words of a wise man.... "stop trying to control everything and just let go"
I just had a thought that may or may not be helpful for people considering this regimen...I have acne on my back and chest that I've left alone for long periods (just letting water hit it in the shower), and that didn't seem to help me in any way. It's much better when I use topicals...I imagine that might be an indication of whether or not this will work on your face and is not as scary to try first since you don't have to expose your back or chest in public...just a thought

thanks bro-well said....i'm on it
Ugh. I decided I should start this over because my skin felt dirty from my pilowcases, etc. So I scrubbed all the dry skin and flakes off and that was a really long process but now I'm feeling I shouldn't of done that, all those little red "dots" not look extremley inflamed and my face is all red and irritated, it looks 30x worse than it did before I washed it. Would starting again tomorrow with no washing be too soon considering I just scrubbed my skin for about 20 mins, or what??? Please someone help! Thankyou.
