I tried B5 taking up to 10 grams but it didn't make any difference to the oily skin or spots. I wonder whether some people who experienced an improvement got it from other supplements they were also taking without realising it. I've tried everything to stop acne and I'm now wondering if plain old vitamin A is the answer. (seeing as accutane and retinoids all come from it)
Which brands of b5 have you guys tried and recommend? I'm looking for a brand that will dry up my face and clear my pores.
For the past year I've used b5 by Solaray with great results. My skin had been 95% clear for the past year until I went to the store in February and learned that Solaray was banned in Canada. Since then I have tried NOW, GNC and SWISS as my sources for pantothenic acid but none of them have worked. GNC was the best out of those 3 brands but I still got some minor pimples during the 2 weeks I was on it.
Okay, I may have missed a post, but has anyone done both accutane and B5 and if so, which worked better?
I've done both and I'd recommend B5 over accutane. I did accutane first and it cleared me up for about four months, then the spots came back just as bad. I didn't want to do accutane again because of the crazy side effects I had, so I tried B5. It has kept me clear for over a year and a half now. I'd highly recommend it. I also agree with what other people say about it. Don't give up after two weeks. It's recommended to try it for three or even up to five months to see optimum results. Also, if you are on a high dose and drop down to less and your skin breaks out, it means you have lowered your dosage too much. It's important to reduce the dosage gradually after your skin is clear to find an amount that works for you.
im using B5 from GNC, i took B5 for about a week, 1-3 grams every 2 hours a day and i ran out before spring break and i just bought some today but while i didnt have any B5 i was taking the super B-complex multivitamin 3 times a day to get the same amount of B5 or atleast some and i didnt break out.
Questions, since this is such a long thread:
Is there a particular brand of B5 that people are recommending? And do you really need to complement it with a special B-vitamin complex or would a standard multivitamin be enough? Lastly, if your acne is mild is it possible that 5 grams would be sufficient or do you really want to stick to 10?

No there is no particular brand.... Just read the thread to see what different people are using. Where do you live?
A standard multivitamin usually has all the b-vitamins in it so that should be effecient.
Yes, if you acne is mild you might get results from 5 grams.
And the most important thing when starting B5. STICK TO IT. Don't quit after 4 weeks becuse you aren't clear yet and don't get tempted to start other things why you are on B5. Give it 3 months.
I am 28 years old and I started taking B5 6 months ago.
Current conditions:
Face. Almost clean, some mild acne on the jaw area.
Chest. Black and Whitespots. Quite big and solid.
Back. Many small blackspots, pimples. Lumbar area some painfull pimples.
I took Accutance when I was 20. I help clean a lot my face and most of my back. But I didn't finish the treatment.
In 2005 I came to South China for living. Here the air pollution is really severe. You cannot leave the windows open, otherwise you have the apartment full of dust in one hour, and when you blow your nose is always black. From March to November is hot and humid.
My acne become worse in the summer of 2006. My face was quiet bad and my chest and back, and arms and forearms got affected with a mix of small pimples and blackheads and whiteheads (chest and forearms) with big and painfull pimples on arms and back.
My skin has always been very oily. I need to wash my hair sometimes twice a day. My skin produces very big blackheads, and quiet solid. Also my skin is quiet thick, so the pore is sometimes very deep.
When I talked with chinese people about my acne, they always said it was because what they call ShangHuo

When I talked with chinese people about my acne, they always said it was because what they call ShangHuo aSca Or internal heat. Some people are prone to ShangHuo, and some others it is just depend on what you eat. Deep fried foods, seafood, bread, noodles and everything that you can consider hard to digeast it is considered to produce ShangHuo. Some fruits as well, like Orange, which we consider is good, but they consider it as bad.
Anyway, I have a very good friend who is always talking about the marvels of the Chinese Medicine, and then I tried. The doctor check my pulse and saw the lessions, and he recommended me a strong coctel of chinese medicine.
Chinese medicine needs to be heated, and it is extremely bitter. I really donAt know what herbs he put in the coctel, but it was a long list. I tried for two weeks, and finally I desisted (one week treatment was like 100 US$. There are less strong convinations that can be cheaper). Because of the flavour, and because I really didnAt understand how that internal heat can be readuced by drinking something very bitter.
People here use to drink herbal teas to reduce the ShangHuo. There are many commercial brands that sells more than Coca Cola, and many shops in the street that sells herbal teas.
So, I moved to antibiotics, Doxycycline. I take it for 3 weeks, and was good, but I was afraid to keep taking antibiotics without medical control.
Then I started looking at internet forums, and I found acne.org. I tried Fish Oil (doesnAt work for me), Zinc (doesnAt work), Vitamin A (it works, but is dangerous. Two months after my Accutane expierence, some acne started coming again, and at that time my GF who was studing biology recommended me to take Vitamin A to help the regeneration of the tissues. I didnAt know at that time that Retinoic Acid it was actually a form of vitamin A and it is extremely toxic). EPO (only for girls I believe)... and so on.
BP worked good on my face, but I needed something for my back. So after reading so much about the B5 I finally decided to give it a chance.
The first month caused me a lot of Diarreha. The second month completely cleared my face, and in the third month, I was 99% clear of pimples and 95% clear of black spots.
Then I started to reduce the dosage and slowly the acne came again. For two months I was without B5 and my back was starting again to look very bad. I stopped for one month and the acne was back again, then went back to around 5 grams daily and my skin became clean again, despite not as good as the first time.
Today, my 8 bottles of B5 has arrived and I am going to take 10 grams daily, together with Vitamin E to help scars.
I haven't got any side effect appart from diarreha, which stopped after two months of taking B5. Anyway, B5 is not a cure for Acne, is just a way to control it.
This May I plan to go back home and then visit a Doctor and give a second try to Accutane. I don't want to take always B5, and the lack of research is a plus too.
I want to try an hormonal approach, but just not yet. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism when I was 19 and in 2007 I got a shot of Iodine 131. I need a second shot soon.
My brother is 2 years younger than me, he has extremely mild acne in the face, but very oily skin, even more than me perhaps. He has androgenic alopecia and maybe has lost like 60% of his upper hair. I have acne but I have all my hair. Even without taking B100 complex I havenAt loss hair.
So I think there is a change of high testosterone levels on my family. I just need to find a way to solve it.
Another approach I will want to take is phototherapy. Blue lasers are effective and not so expensive. And no need to take anything.
regards.
Ivan
Hi all,
I just found this forum and I think it is great. Since I was 13 had acnee. I was really really bad, i did a lot of treatments. The most effective in my case was the antibiotic treatment and Roaccutane, which I didn't take that much cause it was expensive.
My acne is not that severe, I have some breakout once in a while. The most bothering thing is skin with is very very very oily and I have these white things under my skin that make my face appear ugly. My face is not clear so.... I was thinking about beggining a B5 pill treatmant, but then I read that the pills have calcium. I had an surgical operation 5 years ago because of a big kidney stone, so I'm not allowed to take calcium pills. I have no clue how much calcium they contain, but I think in case of an overdosage it is high and I don;t know if I should take them.
I really want to get rid of this oily skin. What do you guys suggest I could do?
Day two of being back on B5
Size of pimples have dramatically reduced to small dots, nothing new coming up besides a couple on my right jawline but those are almost even with my skin they are small humps, not noticeable. I have noticed my skin has been dry especially on my hands my skin looks crackly and rough on my knuckles. Other than that, it seems to be working again like a charm, i started out at 2 grams when i first got some more B5, then i increased to 3 grams today, i have already taken about 11 grams and im going to take 2 more in a bit, i have reduced it down to 2 grams if im nearing the 10 gram mark. Would taking more than 10 grams speed up the process at all?

Ive been using B5 for 1 month now. First, it cleared me up, but later I got many new pimples. And now I still have much more pimples than I had before I started with B5. So I went from 10 pimples on the forehead, and 5 around my mouth, to 20-30 on my forehead, and 10 around my mouth.
B5 sucks balls, and I wish that I'd never found this thread.

1 month is nothing...
Stay on it and up the dosage to 10 grams if you're on a lower dose.

my acne seems to be fluctuating, on weekdays it will be good and not show much redness and more flatness then on the weekends, i break out a little bit, getting whiteheads, etc. Ima still stick with the B5 but its drying out the skin on my hands really bad, even if i put lotion on after awhile it will go back to being wrinkled and ashy. Im already out of B5, its starting to become sort of expensive to stay on this regimen but i will keep to it for at least a month.
