Hey Ndnromeo, What is the highest dosage of fish oil you've tried and for how long? What is the most that you've heard of people taking on this thread?
Has anyone cleared up because of fish oil?
I am going to go out and buy some fish oil in liquid form because i just want to give this thing a big chance to work. I've been taking 3.6 grams of omega 3 for a few months now and obviously i still have acne. I can't really say for sure if it had any effect but it think if i try it out in higher dosages i can come up with some interesting results to post on here in a couple of weeks.
I'm opting for liquid as i figure a few tablespoons of the stuff everyday is better than taking like 30 capsules.
I also am not bothered about the seemingly high dosage because weightlifting coaches suck as Charles Poliquin advise taking between 30 and 45 grams of fish oil when performing heavy exercise. This would equate to between 9 and 13.5 grams of omega 3 so i think it is safe to go as high as to triple my current dosage. (giving about 11 grams omega 3)
Much appreciated if you could answer those Q's. 🙂
For me, I was on about 6 grams I believe, can't recall. But I lessened it a lot too.
Yes, I remember a few threads in the adult acne section, and even posts in here saying how they were clear from just fish oil. They probably had everything else just perfect so that is very rare.
The highest I remmeber someone taking a day was bber, I forgot, but it was close to 10 grams of omega 3. I think it was.
Yes, but just be careful and be sure to keep your bp monitored and if you don't yield any more results, then it (the higher doses) won't necessarily be necessary (lol that sounded funny).
I've been taking 3.6g of Omega 3 for the last 3 months or so, and I have noticed a remarkable difference in my skin. Less oil, less acne and (I don't think this is related), my red marks are fading now. (I think I only notice my red marks getting better because I am not getting many new ones to replace them). However, my skin is still not clear. I've added a Skin, Hair and Nails supplement to my diet of late, although I'm not sure how much good that will be doing, but it just seemed sensible. So, I wonder what to try next? It seems like lots of people are trying lots of different things on top of the Omega 3 so I was wondering where to start to tweak my regimen? Should I start to remove food groups from my diet? Or try B5 as well. My Skin, Hair and Nails is giving me 100% RDA on lots of things like Zinc, B5 and Vitamin E. My Omega 3 capsules give me plenty of Vitamin E as well.
I would appreciate any suggestions,
Thanks.
I'm in the same boat as you are, almost like the last steps of clearing acne. It's come a long way but still a few steps short of finishing the race.
Don't try B5, please don't. The next thing you should look into is foods causing problems. If you want, get an allergy test done to see what foods you are sensitive to. Or at least do an elimination diet. Go without dairy and grains for a few weeks to see what happens. Chances are you will improve even further. Because it seems so many people are not doing so well with dairy and grains, and chances are we are here and still no success even with great diets and supps because that may be the last phase. Just something to try out. Check out healthoids thread, that was inspirational!

I read the first 30 pages and a few recent ones. I couldn't read all 115+ pages in this tread but I have a few questions.
It seems that alot of members had great success in the beginning of this tread but how is the result or conculsion after a few months. I know everyones different, diet and exercise is very important factors too.
I had moderate to severe acne but after I changed my lifestyle, I had a 90%-95% improvement. I feel that I'm soo close but I still get one or two every two weeks or so. I feel that omega-3 is that missing link, I hope.
I workout 6 times a week (3 weight lifting, 3 cardio) and eat 5-6 meals a day. This would be a typical day, most of the whole foods are organic.
Meal 1
5oz lean meat (chicken, steak, fish)
2 cups raw spinach
1 cup brown rice
1 TBSP olive oil
Meal 2
1.5 scoop whey protein
1.5 cups raw broccoli
1 raw organic egg
1 tsp olive oil
1 cup blueberries
1 banana
meal 3
same as meal 1
meal 4
same as meal2
meal 5
5oz of lean meat (chicken, steak, fish)
2 cups raw spinach
1 TBSP olive oil
After calculating my ratio
omega-3 868mg
omega-6 6540mg
I bought some fish oil that has EPA-400mg, DHA-300mg per serving size (2 softgels). After doing the math, it came out to be 8 servings (16 softgels), is this correct?
Should I start out small and work my way up to the 16 pills or go all out?
Is there any new updates that I should know, because I'm sure theres alot of great info in this 115 page tread but it's too long to read.
Thank you for sharing this great info with me. any reply would be greatly appricated
romeo this has helped with oil only for you? or acne as well?
Oh no acne as well, because they tend to go hand in hand, especially hormones too you know? 🙂
I'm just down to the wire now, battling the few that are left, they never go, and when they do, a little more come up. I don't even know if it will ever end or what's going on anymore. But I do know fish oil has brought many of us a long way, a good foundation to have and then explore other avenues with it.

That is highly impressive! May I ask, how was your lifestyle before with severe acne. And what did you change that resulted in great results? I want to know 🙂
Yes, definitely do not jump all at once, the best way is to increase it slowly :). I can't wait to hear about your improvements with fish oil, if it is the missing link. It may even help to add some borage oil. I may eventually do that too, just in case I am missing a link too.
Also, as I said to laffin, with omega 3, we've come pretty far, but we're still suffering with it, mainly due to other reasons, which are not known. Much of which we are still trying to figure out.

ay! I was actually that way before I started all this experimentation. I was down to 1 or 2 a day and now well i'm in a bad state. ><;; but anyway yeah I'm exploring other ordeals at the moment.
something I never remembered to ask you was have you ever took accutane or antibiotics or such?

Oh man, go back on them right away, they are literally the best otc supplement for acne (I believe).
Nope, never on accutane or antibiotics. No derm will prescribe that to me anymore now that it has gone mild. I bet before fish oil, I could have found a prescription for antibiotics. But I really want to find the source of this, even though it is literally driving me to insanity.
It could be very well the fact that my hormones are just too strong, or something like that. I don't know, but hopefully I can figure it out somehow.

No problem. My lifestyle before is much different than it is now. Never had acne during high school, just the occasional pimple, then I broke out 😥 and have been for the last 7-8 years now. I had severe acne with cysts . I used about every OTC medication and a few antibiotics but nothing ever helped. I didn't want to do accutane or any other harsh product.
About 1.5 years ago I was so fed-up about this problem, I had to change everything about my life because nothing worked. First I looked into my family history, the reason was, I was the only one in my family to suffer from acne. I have two brothers, one sister and all of them have clear skin. My dad, mom, uncle's, aunt's, grandparents all have flawless skin.
So I asked my brothers what they do to keep there skin so clear and what they told me was, SHOCKING 😯 . They said they did nothing, when they shower, washing the face is an after thought. So then I looked at all the products that I was using on my face from the soaps to bp to lotion etc... Over night I stopped using everything, even soap. I did break out really bad for almost two months, I think it was the worst in my life, but I stuck too it.
Then I looked at my diet which was pretty much your average american diet, fast food for lunch and dinner and junk food inbetween, soda's, cookies, chips, beer, zero vegtables. Then I cut out all carbs including fruits. I ate 6 meals a day with only Meat, Veg's, fat and water for almost 8 months.
I was always into fitness so it wasn't hard for me to adapt to a new fitness program. I kept it simple, weight lifting 3 times a week with compound exercise's and cardio 3 time a week, running an average of 3-4 miles a day.
Fast forward to today. My face is 90%-95% clear, before I would get a few new pimples everyday but now I would get one every two weeks, sometimes even longer but I would never hit that one month mark without an new pimple. Still the new pimples would go away after a few days, a hugh improvement from before. So instead of a face full of acne, I would have one or two every few weeks.
About a few months ago I started to wash my face with soap but it has very little chemicals (Aquaphor Gentle Wash For Baby) this product is very gental. This is the only thing that touches my face. I might start to do the brush exfloliation too.
I added new food choice's in my diet. I started to have cheat meals 4-5 times a week because no one can eat that way forever. Most people was shocked that I was able to do that diet for 8 months. So my diet is alot easier to maintain now.
Even when I had improved my skin and overall health, I felt that there was still something I was missing. Your body is naturally healthy, any chronic problem/disease we have, it's a sign that your body is telling you, something is not right or your doing something wrong that is harming your body. I'm really into health food and a healthy lifestyle, so I could not understand what I was doing wrong until I found this tread.
I knew omega-3 was important but I never took omega supplments because I would have never thought it would affect your skin. So I'm really excited about this and see how things go.
Wow this turned out to be a long post. I did have a quick question, is my omega-3 amount calculation correct?

That is absolutely astonishing. I read it all. It's incredible how long you stuck to it and did not lose hope, even after months. Awesome, truely. Congrats to your success! That's inspirational 🙂
In terms of your calculations, it comes out to be 700 mg per serving, and 8 servings would be 5.6 grams. So that will be seperate from your dietary intake correct?
Defintely try the Omega 3 - it's good for overall health and may improve your acne, but if that doesn't work or it's not total success try giving your digestion a hand - even if you do some minimal things you might see an improvement. If your digestive system ain't 100% it doesn't matter what you eat or don't eat! And it can't hurt to try, it can only improve it!
Don't eat too much at one sitting, and eat more meals a day (i currently do 4 and it isn't hard)
Don't drink large drinks with meals, chew your food and let your saliva help (it can help with pre digesting some things)
Drink plenty of water steadily between meals (increases food transit time, stops food hanging about - just don't over do it)
Apple cider vinegar (high in potassium, potassium increases HCI in your stomach for attacking the bad, and leaving the good things in food)
Garlic (antifungal)
Almonds (magnesium)
Probiotics (feed your good bacteria)
Do some light exercise a couple of times a week (higher temperatures of a well-oxygenated body achieve more efficient digestion)
Get more fibre (natures broom)
Avoid a lot of coffee, tea, soda (caffeine kills the good bacteria!), avoid fermented/moldy products (such as peanut butter), avoid white bread, pasta, avoid lots of refined sugar.
If that all helps, but isn't 100% then you may also need some digestive herb supplements, and possibly a multivitamin to cleanse and recover a strong digestive system.
Good luck with whatever you try!
I think I'll definitely look into getting an allergy test for foods. There's a place around the corner from my house that does them, so I'll give it a go there. I guess you never know what might turn up. As for the dairy or the grains - eek! It's a scary thought. I use both quite a lot in my diet. I'm quite aware of my calcium intake for osteoporosis, and like my wheat or oat cereal in the morning. I'll see what the allergy test says before giving up. Will check out the other thread as well thanks and will let you know my progress,
Thanks

Hi Helen, it's definitely worth it :). In fact, I just got home from mine. But regardless of what it says, for now I am going to avoid dairy and gluten. I know it's scary, believe me I got so depressed. I was in denial for 2 months before actually doing it because I didn't want to believe it. But honestly, it's very possible. I made a thread recently on "what do you eat daily" and most people had a lot of gluten in their diet. After looking at healthoid's thread, and talking to him, it has made a lot of sense. Plus what's the worst that can happen? I don't get any better because of it, and I eventually start eating it again if nothing changes. But so far, only good things have come out of it so I shall continue. I hope it works for people who try as well because I think many of us on this forum have done so much. We've cut out all junk food and beverages, we've tried topicals, we've suffered for many years, many of us 5, 10, and some even more. So before getting a test done, try the gluten free + dairy free, that may really work or at least improve your health lots if it is causing problems. Or it could be something completely different as well. Like for ami, she reacts badly to eggs as well, which is common, and it's known that food sensitivities can make acne bad too. But I really do hope a big majority of the answer lies in our selection of food choices! But gladly, we have allergists and knowledge of nutrition and especially these forums to help us out so much, especially hearing about how people are doing on certain diets and regimens. Let me know if you get it done and what happens! Or if you try going gluten and dairy free!
I've been taking fish oil for 3 months now. I slowly upped my dosage over the months and I have been taking about 4.8 grams for the past month. Do you think it would be ok if I lowered down to about 3 grams a day now?
I think so 🙂 If you are eating a clean diet, that should be fine.
Please dont do fish oil unless your gonna commit to changing your diet too, because its only a supplement.
I wish I had been smart enough to change my diet when I started fish oil because the fish oil gave such dramatic results at first, and if I would have changed my diet at the same time, I would have cleared up pretty fast because of the fish oil and then by the time fish oil's affects kinda faded, I would be staying clear because of my diet.
Just thinking fish oil alone is gonna be a long term solution is setting yourself up for major disappointment, I know from experience. Clearing up for a couple months and then having it all come back is very hard to go through.
Thats my advice for everyone anyway, consider it.
Has anyone added Green tea extract and CoQ10?
My diet is pretty solid but I have no idea what type of supplements I should take. I figured I could get it from food but now I realize, it's difficult.
NdnRomeo, That looks right I should be taking about 5.6g of omega-3 supplements. That should be 16 pills, does that seem alot. I notice most fish oil pills are 1 pill per serving but mine is 2 pills per serving.

What do you mean by "pretty solid"? Have you ever tried eliminating dairy or gluten or both? Ive tried doing half assed diets before...it gets you nowhere. I dont recommend adding more supplements...in my experience they dont stack up to become some mega acne-fighting mechanism like people hope they will.

Thanks for the advice. My diet is pretty good but will the fish oil eventually not work over time?

I don't eat dairy or gluten. I posted my diet a few post up, if you want to take a look. But before that diet, I only ate lean meats, veg's, fat's and water for 8 months, 6 meals a day, not a single cheat meal, soda, cookie or chips.
I'm really into fitness and whole foods, so it wasn't to hard for me to adjust.
Thanks for the advice. My diet is pretty good but will the fish oil eventually not work over time?
I cant say what will happen for you, but several people(including myself) have had that happen, yes. I dont know that it stops "working", its just that its dramatic affect on acne might diminish. I really dont know...unfortunately theres just not a ton of research on omega 3 yet and I dont know the science behind what happened.
I'm really stubborn with my diet because for the time being, my acne is mild. I'm taking like almost 3 grams of fish oil a day now, and I've been taking fish oil for 2 weeks now, but I don't see ANY improvement...My face isn't too bad right now, but the whole afternoon oil slick thing is a huge problem for me...my face is just super oily
I'm wondering if I'd be more of a candidate for a B5 solution? I'd also continue the fish oil while doing the B5 stuff.

B5 is really garbage, I can show you so much damage that it has done to many people, there's many threads and forums on it for people who had such an irreversible effect. It's not worth it. I would look into just tampering with your diet right now. B5 is not worth it.
Has anyone added Green tea extract and CoQ10?My diet is pretty solid but I have no idea what type of supplements I should take.
Most are 1 per serving because each pill works out to 300 or 400 mg, same as yours so don't worry :). You can try gt and coq10 but I don't know how effective it will be with fish oil already doing a lot of work. And remember, that fish oil with green tea may not mix well as green tea works to also block the absorption of fat as well as increase metabolic rate
My face has looked really good for the past month. It frustrates me that I don't know what's keeping me clear though. I'm taking the fish oil, I drink ACV, I take the antibitotic Bactrim. I don't have a PERFECT diet, but I try to watch what I eat. I'll just hate it if suddenly I breakout again. It's just all so frustrating
