Cholesterol free fish oil, bad?Nope, they are fine 🙂
blah, i gave up -- the pills are huge and a pain in the ass to swallow and I've gotten really annoyed with the dizzyness. It was worth it for the happy moods all the time though 🙂
oh and never broke out from them, infact I haven't broken out for a solid month :boogie:
Switch to liquid fish oil!
does it by chance taste like candy? 😉
but seriously, doesn't it taste/feel gross?
Like bobby said, the liquid ones are usually lemon taste 🙂 If you open up a cap of raw, you may not like it. I didn't, but that's because I despise fish (ironic isn't it?)
Im finding the 40,000 IU of vitamin A in all my Cod liver tabs is really helping heal and seems combined with Vit D (which I might have been totally lacking) im very happy with super dosing on these. However Ive stopped eating a whole chicken per day and just using Whey protein and fish so I cant say this is whats reducing/stoping my recent 'totaly ownage of acne' breakouts on my back. Either way if im doing damage or not at least Im building muscle and reducing acne.
is there anyone still breaking out after completely cutting out all dairy and grains, including rice and corn. not forgetting supplementation with O3. could this be the solution for most sufferers after all? i keep on reading of success in the elimination of acne when adopting the above regimen.

Yeah. elimination diets + proper supplementation have a huge success rating, but the problem here is which foods to eliminate. Sure, gluten and lactose are the main offenders, but some people's triggers are really weird. Like there was this one person on here where after she stopped oranges, her cysts went away. And some people with soy... and some corn, some soy, some sea food, peanuts. some eggs... there is just an abundance :(. And one of the reasons why I think it is successful is that the reason why most of us are here is because we really have exhausted to many options that are available in the drugstore. We've tried the topicals and all, without much success except getting worse.
And then again, it can be even something else, like compromised digestive system, or for isntance... an underproduction of stomach acid to break down food as well? There was a thread on chewing food properly, which I tried as well. And some people had success with nothing but probiotics and digestive enzymes. But I think they all play a hand in each other's issues... which is... digestive issues that react in such a way where we 1) get a negative reaction from the sensitivitiy and then break out from it... and 2) we may not be digesting the food to get the nutrients we need, which leads to vitamin deficiencies.
But then again, it could also be just hormones, which fish oil should balance (not sure exactly how far it does).
Sucks that there is so much involved 🙁
Hi everyone I found this threat VERY interesting. I always considered myself very knowledgeable about food and nutrition and have read a lot about vitamins that are good for the skin, but I never really considered fish oil. I always thought of fish oil as good for the heart and people with cardiovascular problems or something. Anyway, I'm interested in starting fish oil to help a bit with my pretty mild acne. Here's my situation:
I on the whole have clear skin, very nice skin. I'm a 25-year-old Asian female, and whenever I do get breakouts, they are almost always on my chin area or around the mouth. I notice that I usually get a breakout once a month before "that time of the month." I'm on the pill Yasmin and don't usually have the usual bloating/weight gain/mood swings like the other pills I've used, but the week before that time of the month, I notice I do have a bit of water weight gain, some moodiness, and of course a huge breakout on my chin (not every month though). So I think my breakout issue is hormonal and once a month, not every month doesn't sound so bad, but I hate that when I do get a breakout, it is so horrible and big. I almost would rather break out a couple times a month and have them be smaller! I don't think my problem is bad enough to go to a dermatologist or go on antibiotics, so I'm hoping to clear this problem from the inside out. Here's more info about my "routine":
I exercise/run a lot and try to drink a lot of water and just drink decaf coffee about once a day. I am pretty lean/thin (not sure if this is relevant at all) and never had a weight problem. I wash with mild cleanser and don't overdry my skin and wear sunblock everyday and at night use sal. acid on problem areas and oil control lotion. I use Dermalogica products, which are not too harsh for my skin. Once a month I get a facial, I use a gentle daily exfoliator, and I use BP on breakouts if they get bad. I also use this algae, tea tree oil type mask a couple times a week. As for diet, I must admit it is pretty bad. I eat tons of carbs (but I run a lot, so I figure I need them), and very very low fat and maybe low to moderate protein. I don't eat red meat and don't eat fried foods or stuff in high saturated fat. Oh and yeah I do eat a lot of sweets I take the GNC women's multivitamin every day with potassium tablets and eat at least 1-2 servings fruit each day.
Sorry this is so long! But after finding this forum for the first time and reading about everyone's issues, I think people here are very knowledgeable and friendly, and I get so frustrated with my problem and don't trust doctors to be able to help with something that seems so simple for some reason and yet I can't find an answer!
Do you think fish oil is the way to go? Or spiro (I have kidney issues I think though and am on yasmin)? Or more vitamins (zinc, A, magnesium, B, chromium)?
Please help!! Thanks so much!
yes, it sucks big time. all we can do is experiment with elimination, and make sure that whatever we eat is digested and absorbed well through possibly taking digestive enzymes and probiotics. O3 should, in theory, sort out the hormones. i'll have to start with grains, seeing as this is the hardest thing for me to give up. it's just so damn difficult.

isn't overdosing on Vitamin A and Vitamin D toxic?
*WARNING ABOUT FISH OIL!!!*
Haha oh my god, I wish I saw that! Did you sit on them?

Oh yeah, especially vitamin A in cod liver. Beta Carotene is alright, but vitamin A directly... is dangerous, who knows what can happen to the liver.

Yup

What you described seems pretty normal for people, in terms of break outs before that time of the month. Fish oil will probably help that, but only time will tell 🙂 Your diet and exercise level are great as well, and you seem to have great skin too (I wish I was asian =P ) lol.
But try it out, you're doing good by taking gnc's multi vitamin, much better than centrum for sure.
Let me know if you have any questions 🙂

Some of the women on the board who deal with monthly hormonal breakouts have had good results from taking 1 or 2 naproxen sodium tablets (Aleve is the most common brand in the US, I think, but I get the generic version from the drugstore) during the week before they get their period. I think it's reduced the hormonal breakouts for me, even if it hasn't completely eliminated them.

Thanks! Yeah I figure can't hurt to try. I ordered those Member's Mark fish oil pills from Amazon but they don't get here for a few days at least, so I'm antsy. I know the whole bit about breaking out before that time of the month sounds normal, but what I think is not normal is how big a breakout it is when it does actually happen. And nothing I do seems to help except waiting for a week or so. For so long I've had a diet very low in fats (including good fats), so the fish oil thing sounded like a good idea and maybe necessary for my deficiency of good oils/fats. I may also try chromium b/c I heard that helps diets too high in sugar (and I do eat a lot of sugary things). Of course I do stress a lot and when I get less sleep, it affects my skin. Sometimes I feel so desperate that I think of asking my doc to put me on Spiro, but I'm scared about the potassium issue b/c I'm on Yasmin and once before had kidney stones...
Oh, don't worry Asian skin isn't always so great! The bad thing is that sure the skin overall may be nice, but that makes it even MORE noticeable when I have one huge breakout. Also Asians suffer from hyperpigmentation a lot more easily...I also have milia a bit above one of my eyes along the ridge of my nose, but not too noticeable. Maybe if I ate more of the traditional Asian diet, my skin would be better 🙂
Lexica, thanks for the Aleve idea. I never thought of that for my skin issues, just for cramps, which are not as bad now with Yasmin...

if you are planning on supplementing on chromium.. make sure u only take it in moderation. like 200iu max/day. a naturopath diagnosed me with chromium deficiency a while back so she told me to take up to 800-1000iu of chromium. and it made me drop 10lbs (couldnt figure out why i was losing wait until many months later). not good for someone who already has a stick-ish figure.
oh and i hear ya on the asian skin. where i dont have acne/hyperpigmentation.. like from my side profiles, my skin is flawless and poreless. so makes my bad skin areas stick out so bad!

Thanks for the chromium info. What does that translate into for mcg? My multi vitamin has 120 mcg chromium and I was thinking of adding just a small bit to that. Wow how do you get a chromium deficiency and what are the symptoms? ha and yeah my whole face is generally clear and then every so often I have one spot that is SO noticeable!
I'm so confused about all these vitamins/supplements I've been reading about on this site. So far I've come up with fish oil, chromium, primrose oil, green tea extract, and vitamins A/B/E--too many things to take with my multi vitamin!

oops sorry i meant mcg, not "iu" (got confused with vit-A there...haha).
i dont know really "how" u get a chromium deficiency... guess i wasnt taking in enough?? the naturopath did some tests on me using this electric machine device thingy.. pressing a metal thing onto the tips of my fingers. *shrugs* anyways i have stopped taking my chromium supps and have steadily been gaining my weight back. to be honest, i dont think chromium did anything for my skin.
it can be confusing to figure out what to take. some ppl have success with certain things.. while others do not. just gotta stick it out for a while to see if its working for you.
right now i am taking green tea extract, zinc, copper, buffered vit-C, probiotics, maca, saw palmetto, and digestive enzymes. i also have some MSM in powdered form but it tastes AWFUL so i havent taken much yet. i think i will just have to throw that out and buy the pills.
i used to take fish oil but they didnt help that much.. i think cuz half my pills were rancid. they also made my skin super oily (wierd).
i also used to take milk thistle but stopped after i finished my 2nd bottle.
so far i think the green tea is doing a lot more for my skin than fish oil supps ever did.
(but i do eat fatty fish a few times a week to get my omega-3s)
goodluck!
"Omacor is the first FDA approved, prescription only fish oil (for potenency, and quality assurance purposes, but the price is steeper than the best brands out there that are not moderated by the gov)."so should i take it or not? suppose i have plenty of it
I've spent a long long long time looking at omega 3 supplements, and the purity and oxidization of the majority of the reasonable priced brands is almost identical. The only important difference i have found is the %omega 3 to %filler and how much epa & dha is in the omega 3. As long as they aren't rancid (easy to test) and made from things your allergic too, you should be ok with them. The only way to test them is try some, or if someone else has tried them. You may be better off sticking with some of the suggested brands on this thread, but i really think it makes little difference - i buy some of mine at 10p per capsule and some at 33p and they both seem fine to me!

Ooh can't wait to try this. I'm scared about ulcer issues though b/c my mom has had problems with that.
Oceanmist, thanks for the tip. I thought fish oil worked best for hormonal imbalances, so maybe that's why it didn't help you too much? Maybe women have more hormonal issues or something...
To NdnRomeo....So I've been taking 3 grams of Fish Oil pills and I began to notice a difference, a bad one.... I began to break out! Well I began to get big pimples (which it had been a while since I had one, I usually get zits) in my cheeks and in my hair line, I also began to use more oil blotting sheets than I used to... I was produceing more oil than before. It had only been bout a week in a half into taking 3 g everyday... do you know why this is happening? I know everyones skin is different, so could it just be that it doesn't work for me? Or do you usually break out and get super oily skin before you get better?
I'm so depressed right now, I hate it! So for know I'm gonna stop taking them and see if they go away, only then I will know if it was the fish oil pills or some thing else 🙁
Thanks!
I am so sorry to hear that 🙁 I don't know what that is happening to you! Stop it and see if it goes away. Do you have any fish sensitivities? It sounds like what happened to me with milk... cutting it out got rid of the oilyness. That really may be it.
If you really want to try... stop fish oil capsules till you are back to normal, then eat fish, like salmon or any fatty fish, see what happens to your skin. If the same result occurs, it's probably a sensitivity to seafood.
Or another brand, but I don't think the brand is the reason. It sounds like something is going all wrong inside with fish in general?
I guess everyones skin IS different, I just don't think it was for me. Also I really don't think I'm sensitive to seafood, I love seafood I eat sushi and fish and shrimp all the time. It also made my skin EXTREAMELY OILY, I was surprised, everymorning when I woke up my face looked (eshhh disgusting) I can fill up 2.5 oil absorbing pads everymorning, and usually I wasen't oily in the morning. Well I'm glad that this worked for some people. Good Luck!!!
Could that be why, I've been using the Sams club brand (Members Mark)... has anyone else had this happen to them? Is there a different brand you recommend I take???🙁
did u try the rancid test?
cut one open with a knife.. see how it tastes and smells. if its nasty, then its rancid.
i think most all the fish oils ive been taking were rancid. (i also noticed that they made my skin very oily... wierd) so ive stopped for now, and switch to green tea extracts. they seem to work so far by reducing inflammation a lot.... *crosses fingers*. my skin is less oily that i've stopped fish oil too. well, no my t-zone (nose) is still very oily.. which is normal for me, but they rest of my face has almost gone back to normal.
Interesting... maybe I should try green tea extracts... how does this work? WHere can I get it? Sorry but can you tell me how to go about starting this?
Thanks!

hmm fish oil works in multiple ways... stabilize hormones, anti-flammatory.. etc. i dont know if my acne is caused by hormonal imbalance (it probably partially is) but i all i know is that it did make my skin really oily. i prefer to get my omega-3s by eating the real thing rather than supplementing.
hope it works better for you
