i have noticed two brands of fish oil tablets here in South Africa with a higher content of epa & dha, but i noticed that it also contains O9. will it affect my skin negatively. or do you reckon that it will not have an influence. i would prefer to take them because then i can take less.

To be honest, I am not sure of the functions of omega 9 and how it relates to acne, but if I were to guess, I don't think it can affect it much if any at all since your body naturally produces it (non-essential fatty acid).
You may want to try researching on it if you are concerned, hope that helps!
I am so glad I found many others using the Fish oil approach. I started Supplementing over 2 Grams of EPA (not fish oil) about a year and a half ago and still continue taking it.
I read Proffessor Basants book on the natural way to beat deression.. its all about taking EPA in over 2 grams...
I take the Equazen brand liquid with higher EPA to DHA and it also contains Evening primrose oil.
You can also look into www.vegepa.com as it has very strong capsules and only need to take 4 or something to get 2000 grams of EPA alone.
I do worry about the long term effects...I stopped taking fish oil about a year into taking it as my whole familt thinks im wasting my money on it so for about 2 weeks I stopped and noticed I started to get really anxious and moody so started taking it again + st johns wort and worried if I have to take it for the rest of my life or could be a placebo affect. I know what you mean about the imagining ailments up with supplements etc...im terrible with that.
But my skin has been looking really good and others have said since i been on the stuff...But im not cured of my acne yet as I still eat a load of junk and also dont wash my face daily but its not bad at all.
how long has everyone been supplementing for?
I still plan on doing a wheat+ Dairy free diet...Trying to avoid most sugars
Detoxing through green tea and milk thistle
Interesting thought abou tbeing skinny and malabsorbtion...you kno wyou can get a test done for this called the leaky gut which is linked to mal absorbstion. Candida also affects absorbtion
Another thing, what do you guys think in terms of drinking alcohol? I did get drunk last friday. I see people who drink intensely at clubs and have very clear faces and non-oily faces. I read beer in my library, that beer has more vitamins than milk without the protein. And something about the yeast inside it helping to clear the digestive system and stuff like that. Is there any correlation with that and Acne? Could it affect my omega3 absorbtion?
I like to drink alcohol but im told to avoid yeast based drinks as this feeds the candida which can cause a load of symptoms such as acne...Its interesting you say yeast is good for the digestion...I was told to avoid it as it feeds the candida which is a yeast overgrowth in the gut.
Side effects anyone?Just wondering for those who are taking the fish oil if you've noticed any sort of side effects? Honestly I have no idea if this is caused by the fish oil or not but lately when I work out i find out that my muscles fatigue more easily and I feel out of breath trying to do my normal sets with free weights and weight machines. I haven't noticed much of a difference though with my cardio. It could just be that I'm not as in shape as i've been in the past (definitely true) and my body is struggling to get back in the groove or I thought it could have something to do with the thinning of blood that I've heard fish oil can cause. I'm between 3.9-4.4g a day now. Any thoughts? Romeo?
That's strange, hasn't happened to me, maybe someone else can chime in. I know bber takes a lot more than us but still works out, so nothing was reported from him. I know others work out too, like ariventa, and cyph, they were good too I believe. So it may be just your nutrition?
Yea i think you're right about the nutrition aspect. I know i haven't been getting enough iron so that could explain fatigue. And i certainly could be eating more fruits & veggies. Never can get enough of those. I'll try to change my diet up and keep you guys posted.

Its been reiterated many, many times in this thread that fish oil takes time. Ive been doing this for 3 months square today...2 weeks is nothing, you need to stick with it. Your probably taking plenty...you just need to give it time for your body to get used to the omega 3 and for the deficiency to iron itself out. The other part is simple...if wheat is making you worse, then why are you eating it? I dont see the fish oil having anything to do with how food is affecting you, and if anything, having a poor diet is gonna make the process even slower. You need to relax and hang in there.

hmmmmm..then what about all those beer drinkers in the clubs and stuff. Clear faces. IDK its just a correlation i made up. It might not even be related.
The fruit and veggies I eat changes week to week. Normally I make foods which include veggies like: spinach, romaine lettuce, carrots, celery, tomato (I know it's actually a fruit buy whatever), cucumber, sweet potato, and sometimes broccoli and squash. For fruit, I have caught myself eating a lot of apples lately... so I'm trying to incorporate more things like berries (mostly strawberries), apricots, nectarines, honeydew melon, plums.I don't have any body acne or acne on my scalp, but my face is definitely oily and dry at the same time! UGH so annoying. I am definitely not one of those people who can skip moisturizer, and I have to blot oil away a few times a day. I exfoliate everyday with Carley's scrub, but today is the first day I decided to go without it... I think it's just too harsh on my skin lik most other exfoliants. I was thinking about trying your baby brush method, but am scared, because my skin is soooo sensitive.
I'm pretty sure my acne is hormone realted, because I have been on Accutane 3 times (scary I know!) and it really didn't help me at all.
Thanks for all your help... I appreciate it SO much!
Accutane 3 times and nothing? Man that is tough 🙁 Usually, accutane is the last solution, I just hope that changing around your diet can help. I'm sorry to hear about that. What did your doctor say after all that? What was his advice etc?
I know a good amount of spinach broccoli and carrots have been doing well. Get on zinc if you are not on it yet. And of course, the other supps which you feel comfortable with.
If accutane did not work, could it be an allergy to something? There is an option of getting it tested to see what you are sensitive to. It's not absurd that it could be the case.
Also another accutane question, when you were on it, what happened, did it stop oil at all?
And don't even worry, we're all here to help each other, so no thanks needed. 🙂 Since each situation is different, all we can do is keep trying and trying.
If Accutane DID work for you (as it did for me, I took it 5 years ago) what kind of acne would you conclude you have if not hormonal?
Topical Regimens?
Was wondering since starting to take fish oil if you guys have been changing up your cleansing/topical regimens?
Personally i'm trying to go as natural as i can because i feel like my skin has been damaged so much from using so many cleansers, bp, salicyic acid, alcohol, lotions, moisturizers etc. etc.
I'm experimenting between 2 cleansing options: Johnson & Johnson Head To Toe Baby Wash & Lever 2000 antibacterial soap. I try to use as minimal amount as i can get away with for both.
For spot treatment I've been using acv on a cotton ball. I started diluting it with h20 today to try to ween myself off of it a bit. And as for moisturizer, i only dab a tiny bit on my forehead and nose in the AM (and this is only for spf purposes). i'm trying to see if Dove Deep Facial Moisturizer makes me red or not.
Status: i am constantly getting teeny tiny white bumps all over (except for jawline and i don't understand that one). they're the kind of bumps you want to pick at because you think they are just dead flaking off skin but if you pick it off, you see a tiny red spot underneath. and i'm also getting flesh colored bumps which makes my face feel gritty and not smooth
i don't really get full on pimples or zits that much anymore so that's nice but this other form of acne is hard to deal with as well because it's so persistent.
If Accutane DID work for you (as it did for me, I took it 5 years ago) what kind of acne would you conclude you have if not hormonal?
Well, accutane isn't exclusive to particular types of acne which has roots in different causes. For example, it works for hormonal related issues as well. So it's hard to answer what you are asking. But in theory, if acne is not hormonal, it can be from various other sources like allergic reactions, etc. I remember a guy in the cystic forum area found out his acne wasn't even acne, it was something else all together. They had a panel of judges look at his face and conclude it was something else instead. I don't know if that sounds vaguely familiar, but it was interesting. So he went on other medication, don't know what happened after that.
It's such a mystery
And also for your topical question. I switched to purpose cleanser and then just a bit of moisturizer and that's it, though I am still susceptible to skin colored bumps like yourself. I do not want to aggravate of make my skin quality worse with benzyl peroxide or anything like that. =)
Ok, I'm convinced. Went to Costco today and got the enteric coated fish oil. Two of them = 880mg, so for a week I should take 3 for roughly 1g? or just two a day and then up? I'll take two tonight to kick this off Thanks for all that research, it's much appreciated around here.

No problem, I thank you too, as it's everyone who contributes to the thread that deserves the praise of this being of any success as a cumulative effort =)
Yes, 3 is perfect to start off with. Every other day you can add 1 pill till you get to 3 grams. That sounds pretty safe, or you may go as slow as you wish.
It's not uncommon where some people, all they needed was omega 3 pills to clear them. But for many, it wasn't our only missing link. Be sure to double check your diet to incorporate the entire vitamin spectrum, and also be sure you are taking zinc 🙂 That should keep all the dietary 'supplementation' in check.
Hey guys! I began taking fish oil about 2 weeks ago. On the first week I took the recommended dosage on the bottle, 900 mg. This week I started to take double the dosage. Well yesterday I woke up feeling really tired and once I got to work I felt like utter crap! I know I had a fever but I was at work so I didnt have a thermometer at the time. Today I still feel bad (not AS bad as yesterday but still really bad) and my temperature is at 101 degrees. I read somewhere that people can get sick when taking supplements b/c of toxins being released from the body...in other words you get worse before you get better. There is actually a name for the syndrome but i dont remember what it is!Anyway, the reason I am asking this is b/c I havent been sick in soooo long...probably like 2 years! and now all of a sudden i feel like crap and i dont have a cold or anything. Maybe i was just DUE to get sick or maybe it is the supplements? Has anyone else experienced anything like this?...i am 5'2, 115lbs, am i taking too much fish oil? by the way, my skin is already showing improvements!...i just wish i wasnt sick over the memorial day weekend.
I don't believe it is the supplements, because I cannot make the connection between taking omega 3, which is the equivalent of eating fatty fish, to getting a fever. By the way I'm sorry that your sick, especially this weekend :(.
It actually is meant to aid in the resistance of cold's and flu's
Provides greater resistance to common illnesses such as flu and coldhttp://www.mercola.com/forms/carlsons.htm
So it could be a coincidence. Have you eaten any fish before, have you had any allergies to fish? I'm trying to think, but I do not believe there is a connection. What brand are you taking?
Thanks for your response! Seems like you are responding to everyone's inquiries on this topic...must be quite the chore!
Im taking Spring Valley Enteric Coated Omega 3 Fish Oil softgels. I have eaten fish before...not on a regular basis, though. I guess it must be a coincidence. Oh, well...im in Houston as well...weather sucks anyway!...so staying at home isnt too bad.

Nah, not a chore at all, I enjoy being of help somehow 🙂
Oh man, Houston is going to get bad 🙁 Humidity is such a killer, it's like constant moisturizer and wetness. What part of Houston are you from?

That is a great article! Thank you for finding that and sharing.

One of the biggest thieves of prostaglandins is stress. Smoking and other things that create free radicals, attack the chemicals that are used in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins.

That's a great article. Thanks for that.
It mentions taking enzymes with the Omega 3s. Do you know what sort of enzymes they mean? I know there are probably thousands of enzymes in existence, so is it wise just to boost all your enzyme levels or is there a way to specifically take this relevant one?

Yes, that was quite vague. The thing is, we are primarily safe in terms of conversion. Because ALA conversion is inhibited by things which most of us don't do. Also, it declines with age, and we are fairly young and healthy in relation, so don't worry about it. Since we are taking EPA straight from omega 3 supplements, we bypass the need for those enzymes (which we have a good amount of as it is) 🙂
I am currently on a 40 day juice fast and Ill keep you guys updated to see if anything happens good with my skin. All I take is gardens of life green drink, juice and my fish oil pills. Now I eat a few baby carrots with my fish oil to make sure it is absorbed.
Nice job 🙂 The carrots really help lots!
NdnRomeo- I've started taking fish oil caps recently and the past few days I've been experiencing a lot of headaches and occasional dizziness. Do you think it could be caused by the fish oil?
These are the capsules I use... http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Made-Fish-Ome...s/dp/B0000DJAQU
I usually take either 2 or 4 capsules a day... depending on whether I remember to take them.
