20. It appears that individual needs for EFAs in the diet may vary considerably. Ancestry no doubt plays a huge role in this individuality. Saturated fats are far more stable than monounsaturated fats, which in turn are more stable than polyunsaturated fats such as the EFAs. The melting point of saturated fats is higher than that of mononsaturated fats, which in turn is higher than that of polyunsaturated fats. Compare, for example, butter, olive oil, and flax oil. Rancidity is a greater concern as temperature increases. Flexibility becomes a greater concern as temperature decreases. If we observe both plants and animals at various latitudes and climates, it is clear that there is a tradeoff between chemical stability and flexibility, with different results in different climates or latitudes. In warmer climates and lower latitudes, saturated fats tend to predominate as rancidity becomes the greater issue. In colder climates and higher latitudes, a lack of flexibility becomes the greater issue, and thus polyunsaturated fats tend to predominate. In the middle latitudes, monounsaturated fats may make the most sense. The food chain in colder climates thus tends to have a much greater EFA content than that in warmer climates. Therefore, for example, a person of Scandinavian ancestry may require far more EFAs in the diet than a person of Indian ancestry, for the simple reason that their ancestral diets were vastly different as far as EFA content.I'm of northern European ancestry, guess I'll have to up the dosage!
Interesting find! I'm roughly half Irish half Native American, from MN - living in the DEEEP south - wonder how much that has screwed me up? Think it'll change if I move back north? hmmm
On the subject of healthy oils: Olive oil is healthy, as are many others - it just has to be in balance with the o3's. I think going opposite the trend and having o3's 5-15 times higher than o6's would have equal, but different, detrimental effects.

Oh I agree with the olive oil. its about moderation. but I noticed the ratio is very high when it comes to omega 6's. so I'd have to take alot of omega fish oil to balance out.
Question! can the paleo diet help me gain weight? Im so skinny and so tired of it. Its killing me because its like i feel i have to choose between gaining weight ( eating WHEATS, vegi's, meats, furits) or getting clear skin (eatin everything i listed except the wheats). Should i really stay away from wheats even if there 100% whole wheat? or can i still gain weight eating the paleo diet? do i really need wheat to gain weight? if i really do have to choose, im choosing the clear skin!!! but please anyone if you can help answer my questions? THANK YOU!I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I'd say try the paleo diet hardcore (but monitor nuts closely) for a month or something and then worry about your weight. If you don't have miraculous skin in a month, try slowly introducing low glycemic load whole grains for the calories. I did this, but ate a ton of nuts to get the needed calories in the first month, and my skin didn't improve at all, maybe was worse. However, right now after being 100% nut free for the past week but eating some oats and ezekiel bread here and there, my skin has definitely improved.
Yeah, if you're gonna be eating a lot of nuts there's really no point in taking fish oil as nuts have an EXTREMELY high o6:o3 ratio. I don't think you'll notice the effects of taking o3 until the ratio is closer to 1:1, so try staying away from nuts, avocados, and anything else really high in o6.
What the heck is all this o6:o3 stuff! im totally confused with all of this!!! all i know is that i ordered the fish oil pills romeo recomended and that those are what i will be taking! so what is the o6:o3? and if no nuts or avocados, what else is high in calories thats in the plaeo diet? PLEASE! i dont know but i think a new page should be posted because 73 pages is waaaaay to much. atleast a new page with all the info that everyones gathered. or not. just a suggestion. but yeah please if u can answer my Q's. thanks

ok woah woah woah...OMEGA 3!!! ahhhh....what up guys...i just ran to walmart and bought a bottle of O3 after reading this...nndrome had to fill me in in another post...anywho i been takin 369 for quite some time and now i realize why i haven't seen any results...anyway I hope this works fine...ill be curious to find out...I do have a question reguarding this, which i probobly could find if i read through all 72 pages, but seeing that I have a final i have to study for, and could just post it here and hopefully get an answer ...i think i will
well i bought naturemade O3's...they are 1200 mg...says 2 soft gels - 432 mg EPA, and 288 DHA...so if ur saying abotu 1 gram a day...then what would that be? about 8 tablets a day? then work my way up? I am confused and not a good mathamatician, so I was hoping someone who knows this, could quickly fill me in. THANKS

Add up the EPA and DHA. In your case its 432 + 288 = 720mg of Omega 3 in one pill. Eventually you want to take somewhere between 3-5 grams of Omega 3 every day. So do the math.
I would start out by taking one pill 3X a day. That is 720 X 3 = 2.16 grams. A good amount to start with. Take that dose for a few days to a week, then you can increase. Increase until you eventually reach the desired dose of around 4 grams.

Check out the other threads related to the paleo diet for ideas. I'd say you could get by and cheat with legumes and beans which have a descent amount of calories. I have yet to see anyone notice that these cause acne, and frankly I have yet to see many other sources in agreement with Cordain about the dangers of beans. To get calories though w/o going overboard on meat and fat, you're going to have to eat a TON of fruits and veggies. Basically the diet is a vegetarian diet at the base without grains but with meat instead if that makes any sense!
you guys have ran into the same problem i have
how do you increase your caloric intake WITHOUT increasing your carb and intake AND WITHOUT increasing your omega 6 intake ?
it seems the only reasonable choice is to consume mountains of chicken breast and fish every day which means you are screwed if you are poor, otherwise you will have to consume insane quantities of fish oil pills (lets say 50+ a day if you heavily consume oils/nuts/seeds/etc.)
i have lost more weight in the past 6 months slipping from 190 lbs to 175 lbs and i was very happy with my muscle and shape at 190 lbs, i am so damn sick of my dinner mostly consisting of
stupid veggies and legumes which give me no goddamn worthwhile macronutrients and just fill me up with useless fiber and water so my stomach doesn't have any room left FOR THE THINGS I NEED TO FUEL MY BODY
ARGH
starches to feel full and let my skin explode or fiber + water to make me ravenous and improve my skin ? screwed either way

Yeah, its tough if you can't get enough calories from veggies, fruit, and meat alone. I feel your pain and lost weight when doing the paleo hardcore. I jacked up the meat to get more calories, but ended up with bloody stools as a result.
For me it ended up being a trade off between allowing either grains or omega-6 foods (specifically nuts). For me, it seems the excess omega-6 from nuts and oils is far worse than the lower glycemic grains. I now eat olive oil (not as bad as other oils in terms of omega-6), and some whole grains eaten in moderation while also consuming protein and fat to theorectically lower the glycemic load. As a start, here's some info on low GI carbs to try:
http://www.mendosa.com/low_carb_low_gi_foods.htm
I think its better to cheat in moderation than give up completely.
Ok bought the Sams Club brand Fish Oil today (400 @ 1000mg). Im gonna take 3-4 pills a day with some milk and food. And every week im going to increase an extra pill or two until Im at around 4 grams of omega 3 daily and keep at it.
BTW Im 21 and a half, Armenian descent, skinny (5'10" 125lbs) with mild acne (always about 5 active with lots of red marks mainly in the cheek area and a few blackheads and closed comedones on the forehead and between the brows and also where my nose meets my face at the side of the nostrils). So I think NdnRomeo and I have something common in terms of deficiency in our triglycerides. In fact i nearly look like the person in his avatar picture if that says anything. I figure if something is working for him it might also work for me haha. I've been through it all (SA, BP, etc) and i finally am going to fight acne from the inside because its obviously (from all the sebum production reading) a problem from within our bodies and not from how well we clean our faces or not.
But right now i need to work on my face cleansing method. Any tips?
I currently
1. Rinse face with water
2. Rub witch hazel (85% witch hazel 15% alcohol)with cotton ball all over face (cousin recommended me this)
3. Rinse again
4. Baking soda (exfoliation)
5. Rinse again.
6. Then wash face with C&C Continuous Control (has BP in it)
7. Dont moisturize because im very oily already and any lotion makes my face shine like chrome
I'd really love to get rid of that C&C BP wash out of my routine, but im afraid if i get off it might backfire.
I'll keep you guys posted every few days or so.

Yeah, your frame is about the same as myself, skinny as death lol and of almost the same descent.
There's just one problem I see first of all, it's your washing regimen! I can see why you get oily too, you are killing your face. Too much washing and baking soda going on. You should try a gentle cleanser, a baby brush, and a moisturizer. One reason is because even though your face doesn't feel like you need it, it's still dry and irritated from the wash, and a little bit of moisturizer is necessary so that there the production of sebum is lessened. I never used to use it either till last year, till I realized how important it was.

the answer is fat intake:
get a good amount of saturated fat whatever your daily rda is for it,
then get majority of your calories from monounsaturated fats nuts and avacado olive oil and such. just make sure you check to see how much o6 are in your source of monounsaturated and balance it with o6 in a 4:1 ratio remember omega 6 were never bad at all it was the absence of omega 3s and the optimal balance that is unhealthy. You are still going to have to take a good amount of fish oil pills though.
Check out the o6:o3 balance for canola oil http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00001-01c224A.html , it is quite good. whenever i make chili i put some in it to really pack it full of calories, cant even taste it in there its very transparent and since the ratio is already good you can put it anything and not worry about balancing out with anything else it would be good to add to a post workout shake or something.

nice example for the application of nutrigenomics, and something ive never really considered about the natural distribution of the dietary fats within nature.

With milk??? You might want to think twice bro. Stay way from dairy, most here will agree that dairy is no good for acne prone skin and is on top of the SHOULD NOT EAT list.
romeo-do you use olive oil? I noticed only today that it has insane amount of omega 6's. what kind of oils do you use like for salads or something?
Nope, no oil. Most of my oils are fish oil only. But I do take in saturated fats from dairy (milk/cheese). For salads, I would usually use vinegrettes if I go out and order some, I hope that's how you spell it. apple cider vinegar is good for salads too.

Oh thanks. 😀 I am going to look into apple cider vinegars. never thought of that.
ive been dabbling with it for almost a year and there was actually one full month i did it and saw excellent results but i didnt have a good enough diet plan that was easy to follow and delicious enough for me to stick to it, so id go off and on to varying degrees.whats really helped me this time is getting calories from nuts and balancing o6/o3 4:1. I was doing 1:1 for two months but then decided if i was ever going to gain more weight and be on the paleo it was either more nut or more potatoes i chose nuts there so easy to consume and with one can i get 1700 calories and i can eat those anywhere and its so easy now to get the calories i need to gain weight. But now after correllating so many breakouts to anything sweet, ive really began to rethink the role of insulin in acne which has now renewed my enthusiasm for cordains research and as of about two weeks ago ive been strict paleo. But ive always follwed the guidlines to varying degrees.
But one alteration to the paleo that ive made is no fruits whatsoever and if you do it has to be with a meal but even then i prefer to do no fruits because anything sweet is gonna set it off i believe. Also i eat legumes as they have little effect on insulin and as of now i believe insulin to be number one in the acne fight.
So in a nutshell and in order of priority my belief as of now is.
1. insulin/hyperinsulinemia improved/controlled by paleo diet/ultra low gi/gl.
2. balancing o6/o3 1-4:1 with Fish oil to improve inflammatory response and possibly increase insulin sensitivity
3. topical retinoids(this has nothing to do with diet but its the best treatment next to accutane, but i cant speak for women on this one i have very little knowledge of the effectivness of antiandgrogens, metformin(heard it works great) or birth control.
I agree about the huge insulin spike being the culprit.
Now when i think of bread i just think of it as sugar which is digested immediately and results in an insulin spike.
The text i have emboldened makes me ask the question: do you eat potatoes?
I myself class bread, potatoes and pasta as THE main offenders.
I concur about the legumes thing. Maybe we couldn't eat some of that stuff in caveman days but it doesn't appear to have much effect on insulin. I have, however, read of various enzyme blocking mechanisms they have so i will always keep that card to play.
As for fruit: I have a lot of fruit salad (i've only been on this diet for 2 full days so results as of yet are inconclusive to say the least). I don't know if the fruit salad is going to fuck me over due to its sugar content. It is something i can experiment at a later date.
I had to have pasta on one day so i don't class that as a 'full day'. I only had to have it because i was at school and i had told myself i wasn't going to starve myself just because on one occasion i might have to eat some non-paleo food.
I've not done a whole lot of research on the atkin's diet but it appears to be very similar. I myself am aiming to gain muscle on the paleo diet as i am a weightlifter, as opposed to losing fat like on the atkin's diet.
Hey Autonomous, just in case you missed the question, lol.
It's near the top.
😉
It would be cool if some of you guys could experiment with both GLAs (from borage oil) and o3's together and see what happens. I'm already combining o3 with something else right now so I can't, plus I've ended up spending lots of cash in the past 2 months so I am a bit limited. If any of you guys do, please keep updating.I've added EPO to my diet. I'm taking 3 pills a day. Bottle says
GLA 90mg (9%)
CispLinoleic Acid (LA) 730mg
Its worked in the past to keep acne at bay so that's why i went back to it. I'm not sure if one could get clear from it but it's helping me right now. I'll keep you guys posted how it works in combination with the omega 3s/fish oil which i'm taking 3.1g of.
I've now added Starflower Oil (GLA/Borage oil) to my diet. I have upped my Omega 3 intake as well to compensate for the increase in Omega 6. I'm only taking one Starflower Oil tablet a day at the minute, but might up it again as I see what happens. Mine are:
Holland and Barrett (a good UK brand) Naturally Inspired range.
Starflower Oil 1000mg
220mg GLA
350mg LA
(They are also on 50% off the price at the moment - I took it as a sign from the anti-acne god to try!!)
After reading the back of a few bottles of EPO, it's amazing why people take it - the Starflower/Borage Oil has so much more GLA in it, and the price isn't that different at all. I even advised a women who was looking at EPO to try it instead. She seemed quite pleased for the advice - I think vitamins and supplements are confusing for everyone.
Anyway, I'll keep you posted.

If you'd like to summarize your thoughts on how and why to properly take fish oil, the results you've had, etc., and repost them here, I think it would be helpful to newcomers =)
the problem autonomousone is that eating any thing consisting of a decent portion of saturated (or monounsaturated) fat gives me chest pains within minutes, and the last thing i want is to be in pain after every major meal
isn't saturated fat pro-inflammatory ?
what i really want to do is increase whole food protein intake without touching soy or dairy or nuts/seeds, which means the only reasonable choice apparent to me is more chicken and fish except it isn't feasable to prepare those for breakfast

Sure thing 🙂
For newcomers:
As of starting out with this regimen, it was quite hectic in terms of how much to take, and what to take it with. Through the experience over the past three months, the best results followed when taking it without green tea, and taking o3 in optimal doses, and also being aware of your omega 6 intake. It's also important to start very low (1 to 2 grams) and gradually go higher. Also the last thing is to definitely spread the dosage out. One other thing I learned over time is that it's important to understand that it naturally takes your body a few months for your levels to start building so the change will be so gradual that you will probably realize it only by thinking back a month or so and remembering the difference.
basically, patience, being consistent, and proper direction is key to success.
As for results, it's been 3 months (more like 2 months of actual results or less because of how green tea affected me and how little I took in the first months), the results are worth it. I used to get chest and back acne, but that is gone, scalp acne is pretty much gone too. I get a couple every week or other week but it's so minor. My facial oil has really come under control and my skin feels great. It will happen when your hormones start to come under control, and increase slowly then on.
A little testimony. I can remeber back in the summer of 2005 that my skin was looking really good, I even took some pictures back then and was amazed. My skin is not as good as it was back then and I couldn ever figure it out, I have been doing a health journal since December 2003 and I always look back to see what food I ate and what changed and couldnt figure out what I did that summer that worked so well. This thread helped me figure that out. See in Aprili 2005 my acne was bad, then I addded cod liver oil and coconut oil which improved my skin alot. But I read that Cod liver oil has alot of vitamin D and and I was getting alot of sun so that was bad so I switched to carlons Fish oil and my skin was awesome. But after ahilw I switched back to cod liver oil and it went back to so so. WHy is that you think? Why was I not getting the same benefits as fish oil? And since reading this, I looked at my fish supplements, I was only getting 400MG of EPA and DHA a day. Thats not good, So friday I bought carlsons fish pills and have been taken around 4.5 Grams of EPA and DHA daily. I will post progess later.
