Have been on several courses of roaccutane, and after about a month or two, the acne is usually back, worse than before. Fortunately, I do not get any cystic acne, only whiteheads, and lots of them after the roaccutane. In December I started to take fish oil, but for some reason I stopped, not sure why. So I started again about 3 weeks ago after cotemplating whether I should go on another course (which I did not). And I'm glad to say that I am all clear and much less oily, but its still early days (awaiting the period when everything usually flares up). Also taking resveratrol and green tea extract + 4 grams of omega 3. The solgar brand is good, it contains 2,5 grams of omega 3 per dose of 4 pills, so I only take 3 in the morning and 3 at night. Omega 3 is great!!!so omega 3 got u pretty much clear?
accutane is my last resort... i have been trying everything holistic but its getting been disheartening to see mediocre results. my acne is mild, sometimes cystic though, but i go through clear phases and then breakout phases. but my face is covered in red marks so my skin always looks like crap even when im clear (which is kinda why i dont want accutane because it'll prolong the healing time for my red marks).
i am really hoping omega 3's will help, and the liver detoxing. when i went to the naturopath, he took a blood sample and showed me a microscopic view of my blood. it was cool, and i could see the problems directly. clumping of red-blood cells, indents... (caused by lack of enzymes and omega 3s) lots of spricules which indicate liver congestion/stress... cholesterol crystals and bacteria specks.... etc. so im hoping if i fix all these problems, my skin problems will go away.... *prays*
im also going to go back to cutting out grains... ESP refined... like white rice. i noticed that a few weeks back when i did this... my mood seemed to be more stable, and i would wake up with energy in the morning without needing an alarm clock. (not to mention my skin was better then too). i notice that if i eat refined sugars... i get VERY blahhhhh feeling right away and easily irritated.... hmmmm....
carbs are actually not essential to a healthy diet as all you need is protein and fat, just think of eskimo diets.
I would suggest you cut your carb intake and increase your saturated fat intake preferably from coconut products coconut milk, dried coconut, coconut cream etc. coconut cream and coconut milk are easy to buy canned in the ethnic food section of your grocery store and are inexpensive. Dairy is another way to get good saturated fat intake but dairy production standards these days are not the best unless you buy organic or raw. whole milk or cream cheese is a decent source of saturated fat.
carbs ARE necessary. your body cant just run off of protein and fat. i get most of my carbs from fruits tho. and what is ur source for saying i should increase saturated fats? sat fat = bad fats in large amounts... everyone knows u should eat less of it, because it increase chances of heart attacks and strokes...
did anyone experience an initial breakout or something while on these...?im on week 1.5 of supplementing on fish oils (9pills/day)... also i'm on green tea extracts (3pills/day). i've also started milk thistle capsules (6/day) given by my naturopathic doctor because my blood analysis showed i needed a liver cleanse...
i've been breaking out slow and steady... but i was breaking out before i started taking all of these too... so i dunno if its just my normal breakout or what... but my skin is a mess right now and its really disheartening. my doctor said to maybe expect breakouts because im detoxing with the milk thistle... but ive heard of ppl reacting to that, and also fish oil.
need some support. im getting really fustrated and im thinking i might have to get accutane after all.
It's just week 1.5, don't worry as much. Plus, as you increase, so will your results. Till you try 4 grams for a month, you won't know the full potential =). Plus, I don't know how milk thistle reacts either. Mabye, as like I am trying to do, limit or stop the green tea and up the omega 3. See how that fairs for you!
And you will still break out right now so don't worry at all 🙂 You got a while to go and more omega 3 to take in!
If you guys want to eat carbs, eat complex carbs, and rich fiber sources: like fruits, whole grain/whole wheat/oatmeal products.
When I used to be heavily involved with fitness, I remember reading somewhere that these good carbs are necessary with protein to help transportation and uptake to your muscles and body (I think, not too sure). Kind of like a limited amount of saturated fat with polyunsaturated fats for proper absorption
Ever wonder why they had half of your pill be of saturated fat and not something else? The second I saw that, I got wondering, so there's your answer =)
So be balanced about it all. Rule of thumb = Good carbs Good fats Good protein (different types of amino acids)

All righhttt, that is awesome!! Congratulations :). I knew it would start working!
3 weeks seems to be a good bench mark for results!
Im currently taking B5 and zinc and was wondering if it would be okay to take Fish oil capsules as well? Would these ones be okay if so?
Ah yes, that reminds me.
Apart from Omega 3 (and green tea as an antioxidant) are there any other supplements that have a good chance of helping?
I've heard of zinc helping on many sites and i have researched it. Any proponents of zinc here?
I think that besides Omega 3, most other things are not absorbed well without being in food form, there are some other supplements tha are absorbed O.K., but for example, B Complex vitamins are not absorbe very well without being in food form. And even Omega 3 is absorbed much better when eaten with fat.
Romeo hows it going for you? are the fish pills working? Btw now I"m eating 12 fish oil pills and 8 B5 pills hmmmm no new breakouts so maybe the b5 is stopping my oil? Can't say much for the fish oil but it seems that the B5 is making me less oily, or so I think anyway.I don't know if B5 would be good to take with Fish Oil. One of the reasons is B5 creates CoA which aids in digestion and metabolism of fats etc, using it as energy, perhaps there's a chance of interaction where the fish oil is not used. Not too sure (I don't know how they interact, just guessing) But it's up to you, whatever works, just be careful about the b5 side effects.
Yeah I actually thought of that too which is why I stopped B5 for a while what are the side effects? I thought there weren't any....
And btw didn't you take fish oil with B5? And then you changed to pathentic with the fish oil instead or something?

Here's the side effects that B5 is giving people:

There are links in there. I switched to pantethine, but I stopped because it was not necessary either. I don't know and cannot say if it will work for you, but I think fish oil is fine.

I heard zinc was good but haven't looked into it. Check out the sticky up talk that talks about it.
I heard, though, that zinc creates a deficiency in copper and copper is needed too, but I'm not sure on how much of what etc

Those are a rip off 🙁
EPA 53mg
DHA 35mg
88 mg of omega 3 per capsule... you'd have to take more than 10 just to get to one gram of omega 3. Not a good position to be in.
Try taking fish oil only first, see if that starts to help for a month, if not, add in zinc. I don't know b5 and fish oil will interact but I personally would stay away from it together. It's up to you on what you wish to try =) Try what the other international members are trying, it's on a few pages back I can't recall the store.

So true, only now I am beginning to learn this in full, before I'd down omega capsules without fat at times, but now with every meal, it's with a source of fat and good carbs and protein. It feels a lot better too in my stomach
So what about fat people with baby smoothe skin.If diet is the main reason for acne, how is that explained?
Don't forget skinny starving people with clear skin.
Essentially what I am trying to say is that diet doesn't dictate whether or not everyone gets acne. Genetics dictate how we are predetermined to handle certain elements of our body. Proper diet can manipulate or lessen the effect and manipulate it.
You do know that we all react to different things different. By that logic, a fat person can look at a skinny person eating 3000 calories a day and say, "Calories are not the reason for weight gain, skinny people can eat 3k worth of calories, yet not get fat, that must mean food is not a good measure of losing weight."
You must remember, all of our systems are different and deficiencies show up in different methods.
By our genetic inheritance, it dictates our hormonal levels and amount of androgen produces. Omega complex dictates and can manipulate these outputs and prevent or lessen the way our body handles surplus androgens, and reconstructs our existing sebum quality, and excretion amounts. It's essentially a "good fat." It does 100x more than just skin, it's our entire system that depends on it. Bad fats do damage to our bodies.
Much like a person is determined to be skinny, yet changes his diet and gets more muscular (post workout) rather than fat from just changing his diet. It can go against the grain of genetics, it's apparent in these circumstances too.
Food can do wonders, it's just another word for putting something in your mouth to begin a series of reactions that eventually change something your body. Drugs do that too, so can natural sources hence "alternate medicine" It's real, it's very real. 75% of drugs, are from natural sources too.
I heard zinc was good but haven't looked into it. Check out the sticky up talk that talks about it.I heard, though, that zinc creates a deficiency in copper and copper is needed too, but I'm not sure on how much of what etc
There seems to be a fair amount of people suggesting that zinc can help with acne and skin problems, this would suggest it's a symptom of zinc deficiency (maybe the cause of acne for some people, not all). I'd be curious to know if all the people that are taking zinc and it's helping them had a bad sense of smell and/or loss of taste and if it's improved after taking zinc.
The upper safe limit for long term use of zinc according to CRN is 15mg's, and copper is 5mg. The current theory seems to be that 2mg is enough copper and is usually in around 1-2mg dose in quality multivitamins.
As for actual zinc supplements, there are a lot of different forms of zinc, and of course a lot of different supplements - elemental zinc, zinc acetate, zinc aspartate, zinc chloride, zinc citrate, zinc carbonate, zinc gluconate, zinc methionate, zinc oxide, zinc sulphate. If your taking your zinc amount based on someone else's guide or some research make sure your taking the same kind of zinc. Some supplements are made from mixtures, others are "pure" everyone seems to have a different view on which is best absorbed. The main thing is how much elemental zinc is delivered. My multivitamin has 50mg of Zinc Citrate and supposedly delivers 15mg of "zinc".
Also most recommended not to take zinc & copper at the same time for maximum benefit - thats handy if it's in one pill!

Zinc, fish oil, resveratrol. Those are all great.
just wanted to stop by and show some love for ndnromeo for being so fantastic about supplying us with info, and also to the fishies for supplying us all with lots of positive results and - best of all - hope, and also for this SITE for making it all possible.

also wanted to note that I have been searching around for something, a n y t h i n g, to help my poor brittle hair/nails, esp to help my hair GROW and not in stringy form but healthy and pretty. I got my hair cut two weeks ago and I shit you not, its almost right back to where it was before I got it cut (but looks far more shiny and bouncy). that alone would have sold me on 100s of dollars in products, so this is by far a wonderful outcome considering it also helps the skin.
my cuticles are still suffering but I have faith that they'll follow suit with time.
I just freaking LOVE how supple my skin has been since taking these wonderful supplements.
i tried the whole grain free thing, but felt so depressed and had zero energy. but cutting out carbs does have a an effect on oil production. in the past i drank a lot of fuit juice and my skin was definatley more oily. now i try and stick to water, herbal tee, coffee, quinoa/oats/eggs for breakfast and 100 % rye bread made with sourdough for lunch. i do snack on nuts, though, especially brazil and macadamian nuts. at night i stick to chicken, tofu patties, fish and vegetables. what i have noticed is small little bumps (whiteheads) on my upper lips from the omega 3. but still going strong. bit more oily today. and roaccutane is not a solution, well, for me it isnt. we have to treat the cause (whether it be an hormonal imbalance treatable with omega 3, i hope, or not). and this is the forum where we need to figure it out.
hey guys, been taking fish oils for a week now, been slowly ramping up the dosage from 3 pills (each containing 300mg omega 3) on about 5 a day now. Did anyone else breakout the first few weeks of this because my skin is getting worse by the day. I was breaking out maybe once a week but it is now daily. Just wondering if this is common in the first few weeks of this cos obviously its a little disheartening. Any advice would be great!
Just to clarify i eat a fairly good diet , green smoothies etc - taking fish oil, vit e + C and zinc daily. Been taking the latter for 3 months + so i know thats not causing breakouts.
I also spot treat with sudocream and apply ACV at night which i have also been doing for 3 months +

hey hey i am also experiencing the same thing as u... been breaking out a bit. it IS disheartening, but i think it will get better. i noticed that even though im breaking out... overall my skin looks a lot calmer and less inflamed. too early to determine anything.. its only been 2 weeks. i say we give it at least a month or 2 and then see... good luck to u!

I also noticed that my hair and nails are growing faster than usual. Or maybe my hair is growing at the same rate that it usually does but looks fuller and feels healthier. One of my co-workers actually commented on my boucin' & behavin' hair. LOL!
*Update* My skin is looking better. Don't have the humungous cystic zit that would occur once every two days or that cluster of zits that form into one Megamound of a break out. I've got two little ones, but nothing to cry over really. It's getting to a tolerable level for me. I just need these marks to go away. It's been about two weeks since the fish oil and I've upped the dosage from 9 to 12 pills to see if that expedites better results. I've also been taking the green tea extract for the past 3 days.
I still follow a twice a day face washing regimen w/ Dan Kern's wash & baking soda for exfoliation. Now I'm spot treating the break outs that I do get.
hey NndRomeo...my bottle of fish oil says:
omega 3 fatty acids: 350mg
- EPA 180mg
- DHA 120mg
- other omega 3 fatty acids: 20mg
so thats 350mg... not the 300mg that ur using. should i still go with 3pill/4x/day? or lessen it a tiny bit?
I think the "other omega 3 fatty acids" are ALA (which is almost not useful), but I'll add it in just in case it's not.
For the first week take a gram (which is 3 pills = 1,050 mg), then the next week do about 2 grams (6 pills = 2,100) , third week 3 grams ( 9 pills)... etc. =). Just go up slowly, make sure you feel normal, so when you go up, it will be gradual. Don't go above 4 grams though.
I'm not sure how long you've taken them but that's the general guideline for increasing slowly to monitor how you feel and monitor your change.
HTH!

You know what the best part is? It helps more than your skin, it helps your two vital organs the most: the brain, and the heart.
I feel the same about my hair, it's really silky and soft and smooth. Especially my skin, it's so natural now. I never knew diet alone could do that, but the power of seeing your own body (a living organism) change just because of something you eat puts it all into perspective of the damage it can do if you ingest the wrong things. Almost scary!

Don't cut out whole grains! They are your primary energy source. One of the reasons why you had a bad oil production break out from the juice was because it's simple sugars that are high on the GI index, it will really cause a lot of oil production. Just remember, eat your fill, but don't eat more than that =), stay happy, content, but not hungry nor full. And don't worry, omega 3's take at least a good 3 weeks to a month to start kicking in. I'm on month 2 and I'm still seeing progress, my body still hasn't reached equilibrium and now can understand why some people say it takes 3 months in full to fulfill a deficit.
I remember when first learning about it and taking it, I would want to associate any break out to omega 3, but had to realize it's not possible (to increase oilyness that can affect you negatively). So keep at it and don't lose heart =)
