For those of you who are taking those high doses, have you experienced any of the side effects or whatever that comes with taking that much amount of fish oil??? Like the aforementioned strokes and raised cholesterol levels??? I'm still weary of taking such high does of the stuff. And if you guys are taking such high doses, isn't it worth it to just by capsules with the highest dosage of Omega-3 (they do exist) instead of taking multiple pills at at time??? If you want my bottle of "black market" Chinatown fish oil capsules with 900mg of Omega-3/each then I'd be happy to give it to any of you!!! Just pay the shipping and handling. 😀My problem as of late is that I haven't been taking the pills consistently, seeing as I'm on vacation and go to sleep well into the night, waking up in the afternoons. I only manage to take 4 pills throughout the time I'm awake, 2 with each big meal I eat.
Also, some other questions:
- Any of you guys ever eaten Sushi??? If so, is it harmful to acne and............just wondering..........has any nutritional value or Omega-3's??? I'd like to try it out sometime, I jus fear for my acne.
- Does taking fish oil capsules on an empty stomach cripple you as much as taking painkillers or certain vitamins on an empty stomach do??? I've taken some Tylenol on an empty stomach before..............and it made me it's bitch for about a good hour.
yea it is perfectly fine and perhaps ideal to take a high epa fish oil so you will have to take less pills but they are a little more expensive.
sushi bad???
hell no!! sushi is like the most ideal food ever just stay away from anything with a lot of sesame seeds and really eat up all that ginger and wasabi.
raw salmon is the best ever it is the perfect acne food and food period.

Q4T!!
Do you watch the show Man Vs. Wild on the Discovery channel by any chance? I love that show! Anyway, there was an episode where he is stranded in Alaska, spears a salmon in a river (migrating to lay eggs), picks it up and just bites it! OMG, I was a little horrified, but also awed with admiration. He talked about how it was the perfect food, essential fats, etc. Even showed where to bite. Then I wanted to move to Alaska 😆
Ok - I have been hesitant to mention this but - ahem - my breasts have grown a full cup size  I have not gained any weight, just them. I can't think what else it might be related to, not pregnant, not going through puberty (lol)....
sweet jesus that right there was enough to trigger my taking-more-omega-3s-a-day now 😀
I'm sorry, I dont care what anyone says but having a fuller cup size has nothin but pure female written all over it. I'm kinda small and I hate it 🙁
ANYWAY - Yep, this is definitely the one and ONLY supplement I've ever taken that had positive results that were very obvious. I it tho 😀
Anyone notice if you take too many at once, you feel nauseas? I think I butchered the spelling on that.

I concur...and sushi is AMAZING...I just have to ask them to roll them up small because those bitches are hard to eat when theyre all, massive in your mouth.
Heh, that could be taken very wrong if you think about it...
doppleganger & j dub,
Yes, I can't seem to handle the high amounts of of fish oil that others seem to be able to stomach. I get nauseous and headaches it seems if I have more than 3g of EPA+DHA in a day (taken throughout the day w/ a balanced meal). I don't get sick everytime but enough to now only take around 2g a day. Maybe its the brand I don't know... So I'm pretty much just doing it for overall health now, probably not going to cure my acne at these amounts.
why buy the liquid when you can just buy capsules?very portable, easier to take them down too because they dont taste like anything.
you are going to be taking alot so you better love the taste of that fish oil or you may never keep up the habit of taking them, but thats how i feel about it.
actually i just bought that Carlson's liquid omega-3 fish oil (which has lemon flavor to it) and its not that bad at all...could barely taste anything. so im gonna stick to it since liquids absorb into ur stomache better than gelcaps.
btw, can u take fish oil simultaneiously with multivitamins??
yea its ideal to take fat soluble vitamins with fat so vitamin a, d and e with fish oil is a good combo.
Ive been reading about insulin sensitivity as acne is basically skin diabetes (in the hi GI acne trigger people anyway)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin_resistance
Monounsaturated fatty acids (like unsaturated fats) promote insulin resistance, whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids can increase insulin sensitivity
it is a shame i cannot buy makrel fillets in something else other than sunflower, olive oil and brine. as i want pure omega 3. anyone have any suggestions?

my fish oil is 1000 mg. its over the counter stuff. im starting with 1 at each meal. then gonna bump it up to 2 each meal then eventually 3
Im taking fish oil softgels that contains 1,000 mg , epa 180 mg, dha 120 mg. I was wonder about the epa and dha maximum dosage because I want to take three a day.
Take 3 pills, 3x a day. 3 a day isn't too much at all for you to see a difference. First start out low (3 a day maybe) to see how you react and then increase to a higher level.

is feeling light headed a side effect? since it lowerst blood pressure, i assume its not good to take if you're a chronic runner like me. low blood pressure would cause me to pass out on my back to back 400 meter sprints.
i'm just curious because the frequency of taking these fish oil pills will mean some serious financial problems if i'm buying bottles a few times a month for $30+ per 60 pills (630 mg EPA+DHA per pill)
right now i'm taking a tablespoon of icelandic cod liver oil after breakfast ($30+ per 250ml bottle), 2 of those pills after lunch and then another 4 pills after dinner each day
after a few months i am definitely seeing multiple beneficial effects but this frequent cost for ONE supplement just seems to insane
how much are you guys paying if you converted to canadian $ ?

That is insane!
$30 for 60 pills at 630 mg per pill = 37,800 mg per $30
I get mine at $20ish for 400 pills at 300 mg per pill = 120,000 mg per 20 ish american dollars.
I suggest just getting 300 mg pills, or even the liquid. I get mine from sams, you can buy twin labs, or walmart brand, I've read they are equally alright, as long as it has 300 mg per pill, the high doses per pill sound good, but even after you factor in the cost it's too much at that, as you can see above.
Here's a buy 2 get 3 free deal that's pretty good:
http://www.puritan.com/pages/file.asp?xs=A...8&CPID=7918
the 100 caps = $9.99
400 mg per pill of omega 3
So buying 500 caps = $20 american money. So you can convert that to canadian.
(200,000 mg for $20) = 10 grams for a buck. That's 30 cents a day for the amount you need max (3 grams). I hope I did the math right, but it's about right, I think?
I hope that opened up some options for you.

Just stick to fish oil. If you have the money you can add in some GLA's, but they pretty much help the same ailments dealing with skin, as it's (fish oil) even more effective used at the correct doses.
But it can't hurt, it probably helps, but I didn't need it to clear my acne up though so I figured I'd just stick to omega 3's all the way, since I don't want any other source of omega 6 at all. =D
I'm taking 5 grams a day although according to the bottle of my capsules adults can take up to 6 grams per day.
The bottle guidelines is usually a recommendation. With fish oil, depending on the reason for taking it, they generally have specially advised guidlines. That's where I found the 3 grams a day of omega 3 (which is 10 grams of fish oil if your bottle has 300 mg of EPA and DHA in it), which is optimal yet safe too. Not that any more isn't safe, but I found it's not necessary for myself, even though some people have great success with it. It's just up to your personal decision etc.
I take about 9, now, though since it's a bit easier to split up 3x a day.
Too much vitamin A is toxic folks. Careful with the cod liver oil dosage as some of you seem to be getting rather carried away.
The upper limit of vitamin A set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences is 10,000 IU per day for men and 5,000 IU for women.
Although it is an essential nutrient, an excessive, chronic intake of the form of vitamin A from animal sources (including cod liver oil) can be toxic, leading to hair loss, confusion, liver damage, and - more recently discovered - bone loss.
Please check your bottles.
Can you guys post your schedules? Right now I'm taking 1 capsule (1.1 grams each) with a meal 3 times a day. I want to up it to 4 or 5 capsules but I'm not sure when to take them.
Also, do any of you know if Trader Joe's fish oil capsules are good? That's what I'm currently using.
I've been reading a lot about how fish oil is helping with people's acne and I would like to try it and see if it would help for me but I'm reading things on how it can cause brain hemorrhage and low blood pressure, that kinds worries me
I read the first post and I'm going to try figure out my diet but even then I'm afraid I'll take to much and when I start reading side effects on things it worries me *sigh*

If it makes you feel good, you can take the liquid form, since you'd only need two teaspoons worth :).
About the side effects, you shouldn't worry unless you are getting over 3 grams.. and by over, I mean way over. And you aren't so don't worry. It's kind of like saying, eating fatty food (the bad kind of fat) will put you at risk for a heart attack. It may be so, but that is years and years in, and more than 3 grams of bad fat. Just a glass of 2% milk has more fat than that, and that risk is over years and years. So don't worry, just put it all in perspective :). You'll be fine, truely. I'm the first one to get scared about things, but that helped me put it all into perspective.

For fish oil alone: 3 pills in the morning, lunch time, and evening time.
I haven't heard about that brand before, where did you get it?
i broke out!!! BAD!!
i was doing decently with flaxseed oil and a couple fish oil pills until just this past weekend...i drank some alcoholic cider (i'm NOT a drinker - no enzyme to break this down) and so i got drunk, FAST. and as always i noticed my skin gets VERY dry the same night and especially the next morning. then, two days later i ALWAYS wake up with new zits usually on the forehead and nose. dammit.
why wouldn't the omega-3's help to prevent this? i was doing so well too. actually getting to where i was 99% clear and then BAM!! 7 cysts all at once.
should i just do away with flaxseed oil which has omega-6's and just take fish oil?
ahhh! i'm so pissed right now - why, oh why, did i drink????
actually, has anybody noticed that they are DEPENDENT on omega-3s now? such that if you ever stop or forget one day that your acne comes back even worse than before? this is my greatest fear...
^ ^ ^ There's no fear in being dependent on omega-3's because it's simply a reality - omega 3 fatty acids are called "ESSENTIAL fatty acids" for a reason - you cannot have optimal health without them. This is not debatable no matter what diet philosophy you subscribe to because the research is pretty conclusive in pointing to all the benefits of DHA/EPA. The only thing is deciding whether you want to get them from diet (fish, omega-3 eggs) or pills. I think in this day and age it's better to go pills / eggs. Fish, unfortunately, is not something you want to eat every day anymore thanks to the polluted ocean.
Flaxseed oil is much less effective than fish oil/salmon oil/NKO oil because it has ALA which the body has to convert to EPA/DHA (the good stuff that we want), and this conversion rate is inefficient at best in most people. Flax seeds themselves aren't a bad food because they're high in fiber and great for the digestive system, but to rely on flax in general for omega-3's is sub-optimal. Even Dr. Fuhrman, a mostly-vegan health guru, recommends taking DHA (in it's vegetable form, which is extremely hard to find but you can find it on diseaseproof.com/, his website) because it's common knowledge among everyone except adamant vegans that flax just ain't the best for the omega-3's.
What did you mean when you said you had no enzyme to break down the alcohol? Do you have a family history of not being able to handle alcohol, or liver problems or something? If so, that's probably why you broke out so bad.
