It's frustrating to read that taking fish oil has made some people's acne worse..Could it be related to the manufacturing quality? It may vary brand to brand so I'd invest in some research to find a company that really specializes in meeting standards..That's what my dietitian told me. In fact she recommended a brand she has in her office so I'm going to try it and see if I get any improvements.
It's probably an ititial breakout. If your skin suddenly gets a lot better, it will take a few weeks for your skin to realise and then, basically, push all the crap and old spots to the surface. As many people know it happens when you take accutane as well.
I just bought a fish oil supplement from GNC. I'll see how it goes! I hope this works for me and help out with the hormones (as I think that's my cuplrit).
Anyway, is 1 capsule a day enough?
or should i take at least 3?
anyway, I'll report whatever happens.
All the best,
Me
Just thought I'd drop by again to say this shit works amazingly.
I tried tane but after about 2 weeks off, I could just feel it coming back, although admittedly probably milder than before. Anyway couldn't afford more tane so came on here, and tried the omega 3 thing. I'd tried taking cod liver oil about 2 years ago, but never realised it only contains a small amount of what you really need, and obviously you can't really take more than one of those a day.
Now I take between 4 and 8 fish oil pills (1g ones) a day, and 1 cod liver oil tablet, and my glands have stayed small. It's really similar to being on tane except without the adverse effects. Your skin can get a bit dry so you need to moisturize, and occasionally my lips chap (but no where near as badly as on tane).
However, it also helps you lose weight and my brain has DEFINITELY improved - both in terms of mental well being and concentration/brainpower/memory. All after just a couple of weeks.
I'm convinced this is the missing link in acne studies. It explains so much. There is probably a genetic component which means some people don't need much omega 3 to maintain healthy skin, but for us unlucky ones, it's just a case of getting enough.
Having said that, the people in this thread who aren't seeing results are probably due to other things like hormonal imbalances. Would I be correct in my assumption (gleaned from just a quick glance over the thread) that most of these people are female?
Well I'm female and didn't get results from omega oils. However I had my testosterone levels tested and they were significantly higher than average so it's pretty certain my acne is hormonal. But... I thought hormonal imbalances were CAUSED by deficiencies in EFA in the first place?
While I can appreciate the science behind omega 3 oils I found they did absolutely nothing for my skin. I'm using spironolactone at the moment which seems to be working but before this I tried a holistic approach for around 3 or 4 months with no results - I was taking large amounts of fish oil, flax oil, cod liver oil, borage oil ect, like about 6 capsules of each type daily. Zip improvenment in breakouts, wrinkles, or skin quality in general. How long should it take to notice any difference? I also cut out refined flour and took zinc and B- vitamins.
I'm still taking fish oil cause it does help with mood.
And I swear too much fish oil actually slows down skin healing for me...weird.
Maybe I was taking too much and got deficient in Omega-6 but I thought that was highly unlikely with the western diet? Especially as I tend to eat a lot of fatty foods. Or maybe I wasn't digesting it properly?

Because of processed & fast food and cooking oil consumption, most diets in the U.S. have a 10:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 when it should be as close to 1:1 as possible. Omega-6 counteracts the anti-inflammatory effects of Omega-3 [according to what I've read] so if you supplement with Omega-3, it should help balance things out. Just remember that both Omega-3 and Omega-6 are both essential (as opposed to Omega-9 which can be synthesized by conversion in the body).
I definitely swear by this diet, I noticed the results within the second day.
I eat canned salmon or sardines (any omega 3 type fish) with vegetables and fruit throughout the day. I also might add a spoonful of flax seeds to it.
Omega 3 is definitely the way to go if you want clear skin, I can not stress that enough, it is amazing.
hi guys, hope u can help, ive been readin pages and pages of this topic but im struggle to digest it all
i have just bought a 15mg per pill bottle of zinc gluconate - does this suffice??
also, i picked up a bottle of flaxseed & cod liver oil mixture -each capsule contains 500mg cod liver oil, 500mg of flaxseed oil and then vitamins A and D.
says to take 1 capsule a day of both the zinc and the mixture.
is this fine or do i need something else?
i used to have really oily skin until i started taking omega 3's as well. i started out with flax and have switched to fish oil sinceflax does not have epa or dha which are potent acne fighters, plus it contains oleic acid(omega 9) and linoleic acid(omega 6) linoliec acid is really bad for acne.
fish oil is absolutely perfect for what our bodys need.
linoleic acid is really bad for acne? Is it the same for whiteheads I bought some stuff for my skin from this website that said a volume of whiteheads is almost always linked to a linoleic acid deficiency?
so flax oil is bad??I was just about to buy some. I was going to buy Udo's blend of " mix of the finest Omega 3, 6 and 9 varieties of Essential Fatty Acid sources". It is the best flax oil you can get.
so omega 6 and 9 are bad for you? what do you guys think?
I would stick with just fish oil. Reason being is our ratios are already out of wack, with 6 being readily being available in so many things we eat, we lack omega 3, so we don't need more of 6 🙂 Don't know about 9
But flax oil has has a lot more 3 than 6 I have a bottle right here and it says per table spoon it has Omega-3 7700mg and Omega-6 2240mg so it has a lot more 3 already. What are the fish oil omega amounts?

I would be hesitant to say linoleic acid is definitely good or bad for acne. Because, according to something I read, people with acne are usually found to have lower concentrations of acne in their skin compared to people without acne.
"Diminished concentrations of linoleic acid have been demonstrated in individuals with acne and, interestingly, these levels normalize after successful treatment with isotretinoin. This relative decrease in linoleic acid may be what initiates comedone formation.
Thanks to the original poster! about 6months ago I cam accross this thread and purchased Omega 3 supplements (1000mg Salmon Oil) I drank 1 in the morning after breakfast and one at night after supper. I hade Moderate Acne( They were always Inflammed and Yellow with red circles around).
And well in about 1.5 - 2 weeks I started seeing an improvement. I am now sitting here with VERY mild acne. I almost never get anything other than Blackheads on my nose(but that doesnt really bother me) and the OCCASIONAL inflamed spot on my face.
I AM FINALLY FREE. (well maybe not 100% but it feels like it 🙂 ).
To everyone else...hang in there!! your time will come!!
Between unrefined Safflower and sesame oil wich one has the best omega 3:6 ratio? Both of those have very poor omega 3:6 ratios, but seasme oil is probably slightly better.
You are right plus they are not suitable for cooking, so I use organic olive oil for cooking and I eat sardines regulary to balance the 3:6 ratio.
