Hi Guys,

I'm hoping one of you very knowledgable people can help me :) I'm thinking about adding fish oil to my diet. Does it have to be taken with any other supplements? Also if I buy the oil, how do I take it? Do you guys just take a spoonful of fish oil or do you mix it with something? Is there anything inparticular to look for when shopping for fish oil? THanks!

Hello there,

I do not consider myself an expert on fish oil; however, I do know that if you take it, you should buy a high-grade fish oil that doesn't have heavy metals and chemicals in it (e.g. Mercury). One good brand is Carlson Labs Norwegian Fish Oil: http://www.luckyvitamin.com/088395013522.html

I am Vegan so I take flax oil and have had good results. I buy Barlean's Organic and take the following TBS serving twice a day which contains :

- 7700 mg of Omega-3

- 2240 mg of Omega-6

- 2520 mg of Omega-9

They also make high quality fish oil for those interested: http://www.barleans.com/

As I mentioned in my post above, I have noticed a big difference in my skin since taking flax oil (i.e., I am not breaking out in any of the usual places). When I do breakout it is minimal.

I would suggest that you also watch the rest of your diet. Since I have really been watching everything that I eat, I feel and look much better. I only eat organic foods and never have processed foods with partially hydrogenated oils. I also drink a LOT of Rooibus tea. I've taken the Flax for over one month, and the past couple weeks of drinking Rooibus along with it -- my skin is much improved.

Best,

:)

I've been taking 2g of fish oil daily for the past 3 days and I've noticed that my skin has become even oiler. It might just be coincidence so I'll try to stick it out for longer. Has anyone else experienced this?

Also, is 2g of fish oil a good dosage for me? I'm about 6ft 2" but slim 😮

Without going into several theories of y it happens, several people including myself notice more oil and sometimes increased breakouts for the first 1-3 weeks or so. This is usually followed by gradual improvement in both oil and acne.

For all of you vegans and vegetarians, I would suggest finding an omega-3 supplement derived from algae, as it is a direct source of DHA, unlike flax oil.

Has this been discussed in this thread before?

HELLO EVERYONE, this is my first post in this topic.

I just bought omega 3 fish oil 1000mg odourless capsules. It is made by "nature's own" and recommends 2 capsules 3 times a day.

Just two questions,

-is "odourless" a problem, as in maybe they put something in the capsules to make it odourless that I wouldn't want to be taking????

-is the recommended dosage right or should i decrease or increase????

Hi Everyone,

I know this is redundant, and I read like 15 pages of this huge thread, so I'm sorry but I have to re-post a question I'm sure you've answered somewhere.

Is it true that supplementing (properly) with Omega3's can REDUCE oil production????? Some people on here say it increases, others say it decreases. I am post-tane, and just starting to get a bit of oil back on my tzone. I want to control it and make sure I stay clear. I'm using Retin-A (which supposedly helps oil production as well) and I had been supplementing with Omega3's for a couple weeks, but had to stop due to a surgery. I've noticed more oil since I stopped, and hoping I'll see less again if I start back up???? Please advise! Thanks,

Elizabeth

It's different for everyone. Some people notice an increase, some a decrease. Others say that it increased oil production for a couple weeks, then it normalized or decreased even more. It seems that for you it decreases oil, so I'd definitely get back on it, especially since it's very healthy for you in other ways as well.

P.S.-you can read hundreds of reviews of omega 3 at makeupalley.com-most are praises!

That sup is seriously lacking. The epa is 180mg and dha is 120mg per 1000mg. These are the two important omega 3's you want. You want your daily intake to be around 1500-2500 give or take of both epa and dha combined. That would be 6-9 servings a day, idk if theres 1000mg in 1 capsule or two. Anyway, if I were you I'd toss'em and follow the advice being given on this board for months and get twinlab's, carlson's or nordic natural's liquid fish oil or cod liver oil.

hey thanks for ur advice in the omega 3 pinned topic.

i want to ask you if u would recommend this cod liver oil i found -

http://www.luckyvitamin.com/088395013522.html

its well priced and i live in australia so there tends to not be this quality type stuff in stores over here.

also, ur advice for taking olive oil aswel to prevent oxidisation, when u say 3-5 tablespoons olive oil, do u mean a day, or do u mean 3-5 with every ingestion of fish oil?

thankyou

Sure, that's a good one! And that's three to five tbsp a day. You don't have to take it when you do the fish oil, but it may provide slightly better results. Remember to have no more than three times more omega 6 than omega 3 in a day. a tbsp of olive oil counts as 1200mg-nuts have alot of omega 6, except for macadamia nuts wich have only 500mg or so per serving so those are ok. Most other vegetable oils are very high in omega 6, so avoiding chips and snack foods with sunflower, safflower etc is a good idea...let us know how it goes...

After taking Omega-3s (from Flax) now for almost 2 mos., I have definitely noticed a vast improvement in my skin. Initially, for approx. 2-3 weeks, it seemed like I did have more oil production -- esp. on my forehead. This was a bit odd, because I normally don't breakout there, ever. I got small bumps on my forehead for that period, but now they are gone.

As "ryudoadema" said, it's healthy in so many other ways, I think it is worth a try. I know it has helped me. I immediately noticed a decrease in my typical breakout area (i.e., my chin). I'd say after the 1.5 mo. mark, my skin started to get less oily all over. In fact now it is almost dry!

Thanx organic gal, that info helps alot. Before I came on these boards I used omega 3's in minimal doses for a year or so to help with my overall healthy lifestyle and weightlifting. I forget why i stopped, either i saw that some people break out from it, or the fish burps. Anyway, I started back on and noticed within a week I was much oilier and would get big, painful forehead pimples. I kept trying over and over but always stopped when I was sure it was causing more acne.

Iv'e been on a large dose, 2-3g epa/dha(i know u can use flax too), for about a week and a half now and a smaller dose for the same amount of time before that. Painful ones were coming up along with increased oil, but it seems that the oil is thinner and I think what happens is it brings out the clogs faster and develop into zits. After they come up though, it's harder for clogs to occur cuz the oils more viscous. So the ib seems to be pretty much over and hopefully the oil will decrease or normalize soon.

BTW, i think organigal would be a cool name, sorta like robocop or something, lol 😀

I am also taking a heavy dose of Omega 3-6-and-9s, and have seen consistent improvement. The only thing I have changed/added to my routine lately is drinking the ACV in water and/or Rooibus "tea."

As far as the name goes, I like it. I can already see a movie/cartoon about her. She'd be zapping people's faces w/her Omega-3 gun. 😀

Keep me posted.

Not I. I have heard you can do that or flax topically. I guess you would have to do it at night -- so that you wouldn't offend anyone or have oil slathered all over your face though! 😀

I have read numerous articles that say putting garlic on blemishes works as well. (I guess that's another forum topic though!) I'm tempted to try it!

So I recently decided to change my capsule Omega 3 capsules to try liquid Cod Liver Oil.

From: http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/pro...ail.asp?pid=146

To: http://www.codliveroil.co.uk/codLiverOil/index.htm

I know a lot of people have said that the liquid is better than the capsules, and I thought a reduction in the amount of glycerine and gelatin might be better. However, I am finding the Cod Liver Oil really difficult to take. The taste is terrible, and I know that I'm whinging like a 5 year old, but I really can't stand it. I'm also getting really bad fish burps, which I don't get with the capsules. The Seven Seas Brand is one of the best in the UK, so it's not that the quality is poor, and they don't do a flavoured one.

So, any suggestions as to what I can do to make it easier to take?!!

Thanks.

Also, I found this link which was good reading:

Cod Liver Oil is disgusting, I bought 5 bottles of it and One Sip of it made me wanna puke.

The only thing I could think of is taking it and then immediately drink something that will delude the taste right after. Even that for me didn't work.

Agreed, when it comes to the fish oils I have to put them into a flavored drink of some kind to get over the disgusting taste.

Does it not just separate out from the orange juice? Will give this a try tomorrow though - anything's better than the taste!! Will report back!

Just ordered 500ml of Carlson's Fish Oil. Going to start this new Omega 3 regimen as soon as the shipment comes in. I've tried nearly everything else, I think it's time I move to Holistic solutions.

Couple questions:

1) Can I take the EVOO by itself or do I have to mix it with food?

2) What other doses of vitamins should I take? I've seen C, E, B, Calcium and Zinc from the thread (and how much dosage of each).

3) Should I break up the 2mg of fish oil (omega 3) into 2 or 3 servings?

4) Anything else I'm forgetting? Other then the vitamins above and the fish oil?

Thanks!

Anything more than 200 mg of Vitamin C.

60 I.U. of vitamin e.

No calcium. Take 400 milligrams magnesium instead.

25 mg zinc.

3) Should I break up the 2mg of fish oil (omega 3) into 2 or 3 servings?

Er, 2 mg? You should be taking at least 2,000 mg.

But yeah, break your dosage up into as many parts throughout the day as possible.

2,000 mg?! Wow.

I've been drinking 1 teaspoon of Fish Oil and Cod Liver Oil (liquid of course) each, is that even in the ballpark of how much I need per day?

Just to report, I've been doing this process for about a week and it's as most others have mentioned. My face has a little more sebum, but it feels more natural, rather than the feeling of plain grease I used to have. Tiny whiteheads at first, but no inflamation so far. ::Knock on wood::

Redness levels have gone down too! I think it's actually working! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

i-have-a-question, mixing it doesn't cover the taste completely but it definitely makes it more bearable than just taking the oils straight up.

So, my opinion: Cod Liver Oil taste awful, when mixed with pineapple juice, orange juice or milk! I don't think I'm going to be able to take the liquid Cod Liver Oil then. I almost gag at each drink, and I get terrible fish burps afterwards. Ick! In America, you seem to be able to get flavoured Cod Liver Oil - is this any better? Does anyone know if you can get this in the UK? Thanks.

JT: How much liquid you have to take, depends on the strength of your liquid, and the concentration of Omega 3 in the bottle. Look on the back of the bottle and it will give you a break down of the Omega 3 (EPA and DHA) in each 10ml or teaspoon or other measure. You then need to work out how much you liquid you need to take to make sure you're getting 2000mg. Fairly easy, but if you're having trouble, post these numbers here and we can work it out for you.
