Hey, thanks for the reply on the pumpkin seed oil. I think im going to give it a go, I know about the other sources, but I sorda have the urge to try this, haha.
I found this:
http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp...amp;catid=16869
In case im not allowed to post that link, its GNC Pumpkin seed oil capsules, 1000mg and it also says No Sugar, No Starch, No Artificial Colors, No Artificial Flavors, No Preservatives, Sodium Free, No Wheat, No Gluten, No Corn, No Soy, No Dairy, Yeast Free.
Other ingredients: Gelatin and glycerin
I was wondering if you think they are a good choice? I remember reading that fish oil capsules have a lot of fillers and arent worth it, so i was hoping you could tell me what you think of these. Also if they are 1000mg capsules, is that to high? and if not how many of them a day do you think I should take? It says on the bottle 1 or 2 capsules but I know fish oil capsules say that to.
Lastly, is there anything I should avoid food wise, and side effects or anything at all you nkow of that I should know about? Im not sure if they have any attachments with them as fish oil capsules do. Thank you a lot for your help. I feel rude nailing you with all these questions and stuff, so I hope you dont mind. Thanks again
thanks a bunch romeo.Anytime! and as always, feel free to ask as many questions as you wish, I check this site often. 🙂
I have mild to moderate acne. Didn't really have much acne until age 34, now 37. I'm male for what it's worth. I've been taking 3 teaspoons COL + 100 mg zinc + 400 mcg chromium for 12 days. Just to complicate things, I've been on Doxycyclone for about 3 weeks... stumbled upon this site after starting the antibiotic. Since starting the COL, Zinc, and chromium it seems like I have seen gradual improvement but I can't be certain it's not attributed to the antibiotic. Right now, I just want to fix the problem and then maybe take away the antibiotic to see. That said, since starting the COL, my face definitely has had an increase in oil - it was oily to begin with now the shine is more. I will say that I think the oil feels less viscous, but it's definitely 'wetter'. I have read by some people's account that this may be a natural thing to occur, and that this 'wetter' condition will subside as the body adapts to the changes. Even so, it worries me that this oily condition could be a problem. But as I said, the actual acne and new acne appears to be going away (I'm afraid to even say that so that I don't jinx it).
Any thoughts on this increase in oil and recommendations? Appreciate this message board immensely. Actually got a little choked up when I read GyroCaptain's success story a few pages back. Inspiring.

Yes, what is happening is that your oils glands are producing a more natural, nourishing form of oil. Before it was mainly oleic acid (the omega 9 fatty acid your body produces naturally) which is very comedogenic.
So don't worry, this feeling is great.
Also I would like to ask, this being a very important part of the equation. How many grams of fat do you get per day? Do you meet the rda (it's 65 grams) and also what sources are these grams of fat from (the type of oil, or even if it's from something else like dairy).
Thanks! Oils, I have noticed, when used in the right quantities and ratio help more than almost anything else, on this side of vitamin A of course.
Let me know, I believe your acne can be fixed, and also relatively quickly I hope.

Thanks for the quick response. I just re-read my message, obviously I meant CLO not COL... you got the idea.
Honestly, I have not really stopped to calculate the fat/day. I exercise a lot, but I know my diet has been less than stellar. Pretty much have always ate what I wanted to which was definitely high in saturated fats. When I started the CLO, zinc, and chromium, I also made an effort to eat more fruits and veggies but I still eat some fats. I don't eat too much dairy but I will put cheese on a sandwich. Let me just start by saying what I ate yesterday which is a fairly typical day.
Breakfast: 1 banana, 1 apple, Go Lean Granola (sometimes I will eat a plain white bagel)
Lunch: Sandwich (meat, cheese, mustard, light mayo, white or wheat bread), apple, wheat thins - which I thought was a slight improvement to chips which I used to do
Dinner: shake and bake pork chops and a bunch of veggies w/ no dressing.
I have made a strong effort to drink 8-10 glasses water about 2 weeks ago also. And like I said, I have made some improvement by trying to eat more fruits and veggies. But I know I get my share of saturated fats. But before 2 weeks ago, I would say it was definitely worse. I am not prepared to eat perfectly, but I'm willing to make some changes if it will help.
I really have always exercised 4-5 times per week. Just enjoy it. Interestingly also, I starting lifting weights much more heavily around when my acne started. I read that lifting weights can increase testosterone, which we all know what that can do. So I kinda have this theory that lifting weights may have been what pushed me over the top. Incidently, I have continued to lift weights like this over the last 3 years because, honestly, it just makes me feel good. Thought about quitting to see if my acne subsides but I would prefer to lift weights AND get rid of my acne!

I have a good idea that I want to share with you.
I have an account on nutritiondata.com , which allows me to easily add in foods together, and it breaks down the macros of the diet, including cals/fat/carb/protein/vitamin/mineral content and in percentages. It even goes as far as the break down of the type of fats. Very detailed and precise. Best tool I have ever used. It gives a really good forecast of what you can can further be done to help. (I think I know) and we can go from there. It will be like an internal scan. How does that sound? I really want to help you out, and you seem very dedicated and you are also health conscious so I can tell you won't mind improving your health with any suggestions I may give.
Let me know what you think. If it's a go, I'll go ahead and input what you have given, and then from there we can add in things that can help in terms of acne. I believe we can get you clear with this.
Also as for working out, you don't have to stop, but if you like, you can do it at a lower frequency as well.
Ever contemplated creating a new thread Romeo? If I recall correctly you had mentioned that you can no longer edit the first post or topic title so most of the stuff on the first post is no longer relevant since you guys have seemed to have mostly moved on from fish oil.
I'm at a loss here: what's the consensus around here as to what type of CLO to take, the daily dosage and any other supplements to go with it? Would continuing to take my daily dose of 2 GNC "Mega Men" multivitamins cover the supplements to be taking with CLO? Apart from multis and (previously) fish oil I also occasionally take Aloe Vera softgels to help with my digestion and cleaning up my insides, and less so a spoonful or two of this Iron-based vitamin that includes much more Iron than what "Mega Men" provides. I take it during stressful days or times (exams, course papers) as it claims to "calm your mood".
I see GNC sells CLO softgels for a good price considering the number of them (500), but don't know if I have to take big ass doses of them like I rarely did with fish oil. I'm away from home for the majority of the day which makes something like that difficult.
Once again any help would be appreciated!

Depending on how much vitamin A is in your capsules, it may be best to simply get a liquid fish oil instead of the CLO. Another question is, how much of the vitamin A in the capsules are absorbed? I have no answer to it except general findings, but that information found was only talking about centrum like pills, not GNC since I am sure they are made different.
If you decide to go for the CLO still, they sell a liquid version, use that, don't go for capsules. Most people here are using either the Twin Labs version or the GNC brand, they are almost identical in quality, composition, and price. Just be sure it's not emulsified.
One of my plans was sitting down one day, and instead of using quotes, I would use italics and indentions so it would look like this

That way I can keep all the material since the quote limitations were changed
Also, I would change the topic not to be fish oil capsules, but even more general "Omega 3 Fatty Acids" and maybe even the future, All about oils in general, not just omega 3.
I will be listing either to use liquid fish oil or cod liver oil and explain why to each like usual. Also the doses etc etc.
I hope I answered all your questions, if I overlooked anything please let me know.
I'm sorry this has probably been asked before but is it ok to take this while taking 5 teaspoons of ACV daily as well? (2 morning, 1 afternoon, 2 night)
We are still not at a consensus but what some are doing is taking it apart from this. For example, taking it an hour or so apart, or even more. Though it's up to you. I am not totally sure how it will interact. Logic says it should not interact, but I am no scientist I wish I was more of help, sorry!

Here's a link to the Mega Men caplets I'm taking:
http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?produ...rentPage=family
It says that the serving size (2 caplets/day) of the multi contains:
Vitamin A (50% as beta-Carotene 50% as Acetate) 5000.00 IU 100% DV
Vitamin D (as Cholecalciferol) 200.00 IU 50% DV
How's that sound? Adequate enough, or should I also take into account how much of the actual multi does my body absorb?
And is this the GNC liquid CLO that you mentioned people are taking?:
http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?produ...rentPage=family
'
Only one of their bottle, capsule CLO's (Triple Cod Liver Oil) contain Omega-3's, almost about as much as their regular Fish Oil capsules do. I believe they don't sell liquid fish oil, at least under their brand.
I've been taking cod liver oil for 2 weeks or so now and I want to start taking some flaxseed oil again with it. I was reading about colon cleansing and I remembered reading that flaxseed oil can help with that plus when I was taking just flaxseed oil I noticed some changes in that area. lol I've been taking about 2 1/2 - 3 tsp of cod liver a day and I'm not sure how much flaxseed I should take. The bottle says 3 tsp a day but I don't know if it would be ok to take that much while also taking cod liver? I was thinking of taking 2 tsp of the cod liver oil and 1 or 2 tsp of flaxseed oil but it would be nice to take the recomended amount of both.
hey i use spring valley omega 3 1000 mg fish oil pills. i started using them 3 days ago, im doing only 2 a day, but the bottle states to use 3 a day. but im only 20 years old and wondering if its too much of an intake for someone my age to take exactly THREE pills a day. being that these kind of pills are meant for probably older people that NEED the omega 3. heres the link to one of my posts. ANY thoughts or ideas will help!!! thankyou. http://www.acne.org/messageboard/Mild-acne...lp-t173593.html

It is not older people that need omega 3. Everyone does. Hence the term essential fatty acid. It's kind like saying, not everyone needs protein. Omega 3 is one of three fats we intake (omega 3, 6, or 9), and every person needs fats from these sources. Everyone.
But to answer your question, no it's not too much to take 3 a day, it's actually not enough. 3 is just a general statement, for general use, not specific depending on purpose. one size does not fit all.
Good luck 🙂
Romeo is it ok to take fish oil capsules + 4-5 teapsoons of ACV a day? ;D
Generally we're not too sure if they interact, but just in case take them apart from each other if you do and hopefully it should be totally fine.

Let me know how much ALA is in each serving of cod liver oil. Basically just read me the back label in terms of
1)dosage size
2) content

I believe you are set to go. Since most of the vit A is from beta-carotene, also considering only a percentage of the rest is absorbed :).
Bingo, that's the bottle of CLO from GNC 🙂 So that should take away any need for any excess omega 3 from fish oil liquid. Hope that helps
This sounds very good. Lets do it, and thanks.
Ok here is your report.
based on these items you have given me:
Breakfast: 1 banana, 1 apple, Go Lean Granola (sometimes I will eat a plain white bagel)Lunch: Sandwich (meat, cheese, mustard, light mayo, white or wheat bread), apple, wheat thins
Dinner: shake and bake pork chops and a bunch of veggies w/ no dressing.
http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00021B...YK-01c31zg.html
There is your analysis. It may change based on if you eat more than you listed, also in more portions etc. But that is a GENERAL range 🙂
Also the other change would be the veggies, I only added broccoli, but it's generally different based on what veggies you eat. It won't alter it too much in the big picture.
What I can deduct is that:
You get about half the fat you need daily. I would simply add a few tablespoons of olive oil and a serving of peanuts and that will suffice there. That will add about 45 grams of fat, 8 grams of which will be linoleic acid (which you will then fall into the recommended amount of total linoleic acid needed daily which is about somewhere in between 10 to 15 grams) and the rest will be Monosaturated fats which will also reduce LDL (Bad cholesterol) and protect HDL (good chol).
Nex is the vitamin A. I would go ahead and then add in cod liver oil, two teaspoons. That will suffice your vitamin A, D, and Omega 3 fatty acid needs for the day. (since you are low in all three, so you will kill three birds with one stone).
Your entire b complex is low, which may also mean low energy levels, and improper fat metabolism. A B-complex will suffice there. Or simply eat more whole grain foods if they do not affect you. If they do, simply opt for the b complex.
Your manganese and selenium levels are perfect, which is perfect and great for acne.
Also your zinc levels are low, supplement that.
Your protein is perfect.
That's about it!

Add in 2 teaspoons Liquid cod liver oil daily($8 for a 40 days supply), 1 zinc and 1 b complex (probably $10 total for a 3 month supply), and 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 or 2 servings of peanuts (maybe $6 for both together? Will last about a week or two at that level)
I think that should cover any holes.
And it's granted that you eat more in a day, but this will just give us a general guideline of how trends are going based on what you wrote.
Give this a shot and let me know how it turns out, I really feel that on a nutritional level, this will make you healthier and also help acne wise. Especially the oils! Very necessary in providing the right oils for your skin to use, especially providing better moisture levels and hormonal balance (most important role for fats).
If you would like to see a break down of my diet as well I can post it up later.
Good luck, keep me posted.
This sounds very good. Lets do it, and thanks.Ok here is your report.
based on these items you have given me:
Breakfast: 1 banana, 1 apple, Go Lean Granola (sometimes I will eat a plain white bagel)Lunch: Sandwich (meat, cheese, mustard, light mayo, white or wheat bread), apple, wheat thins
Dinner: shake and bake pork chops and a bunch of veggies w/ no dressing.

Very Nice. Thanks very much. I will certainly try it. On the fat intake, can I just eat more foods that are higher in fat rather than take olive oil? And what other foods would be good to supplement the fat besides peanuts. I assume you don't mean greasy foods, etc?

Nope, one of the reasons is that there are many type of fats. Most of the greasy fatty foods are trans fats / hydrogenated oils / saturated fats (from animals especially), and so on. The reason I mention olive oil and peanuts is the ratio of linoleic acid (omega 6 fat that your body is lacking) and monosaturated fat ratio. If you take these, you will get the amount of fat you need in a day (about 65 grams) and also it will call in range with the amount of linoleic acid your body needs in a day too (between 10 to 15 grams a day). So basically it will give you a perfect, healthy, and optimal balance.
Also be sure it's extra virgin olive oil, I forgot to mention that 🙂
Hello,
I started reading this thread and am very interested in the diet possibilities. However, 147 pages is too much to cipher through so I was wondering if you could just help me out.
I'm a 20 year old male with mild to moderate acne. I take centrum a to zinc everyday. Should I combine or switch that with Fish Oil? Basically any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
i notice that fish oil gives me little yellow sebum plugs along my t-zone. mostly nose, under eyes, and middle of forehead. if i skip a day or two then the oil pretty much stops.
i probably only notice this since i am post tane and my skin is otherwise very dry. it's not a big deal, i just exfoliate and the stuff flakes right off. but it has me wondering if fish oil is really helping? obviously if its making my face oily then thats not a good thing.

Switch to liquid fish oil, not capsules, and see if that may help. It may not be the fish oil. But before you do that, Also, when you do not take it, you're saying you never get sebum plugs? Tell me more about that. It may be the fact that also you don't get any other healthy fats in your diet. Do you get any olive oil, canola, or any other oils in your diet? Or are they completely non-existent? Tell me more.

Sure,
Basically tell me the types of fat you get daily and how much of it you get. Or just list the sources. Also include any vegetable oils you get.
Write out your diet as well, I can set you up with basic nutrition tips that directly relates to acne.
Here's a link to the Mega Men caplets I'm taking:http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?produ...rentPage=family
Yes, that is of help, but I still have some more questions:
- The recommended daily intake for GNC's liquid CLO is one teaspoon (5ml) daily. 5ml is also the Serving Size. In our acne-related cases, would we have to take more of that per day? Wouldn't that be deadly with the Vit A & D, and also considering that I take Mega Men multis (with their own numerous amounts of Vitamin A & D) every day and often drink Orange Juice (some of which contains Calcium/Vitamin D additives as well)?
- The total amount of Omega-3 per 5ml serving of GNC liquid CLO is 837mg, how's that sound?
- I've also been hearing Zinc tossed around here and there on this thread. My Mega Men multi's provide Zinc as well:
Zinc (as Zinc Oxide) 25.00 mg 167% DV
Is that adequate enough per day? I'm telling ya, these multis have almost everything!
- Honestly...........do these liquid CLO's taste bad, specifically the GNC one?
If most of my fears are qualmed that I'll spring for a bottle of GNC liquid CLO.
Ok NDN, here it goes
I live on a college diet so as you can imagine.. not the healthiest
Let's see -
Breakfast usually consists of
-Two Eggs (Salt/Pepper), Toast
or
-Cereal (Cherrios)
-Apple or Banana
-Milk or Juice
Lunch
-Lots of PBJ sandwiches
or
-Pizza
or
-A lot of takeout, chinese, grilled subs, etc
Dinner is relatively the same
basically whatever I have time for.. I take a multivitamin every day
Thats about it.. if you need specifics in amounts and calories.. that may be a tad difficult to gather
Let me know if you need more info
Thanks!
