I realized it wasn't a side effect from borage oil. I quit taking it for a few days & I noticed my ankles were kinda swollen & my toes were purple..it was b/c i had been sitting for a while & i guess b/c my feet were really cold, the circulation was a lil off.

evening primrose oil has helped me a lot, but I'm not totally clear yet. I have a couple questions I hope someone can answer...

1. Is it good to take or eat omega 3's at the same time? Or does this counteract the omega 6's. (taking omega 3's in the past without EPO has caused me to break out)

2. Anyone take EPO with zinc with good results?

thanks

Thats very interesting for me too!

Im also interested, did EPO help you people with blackheads?

And how did the EPO help with oily skin?

Im finishing with accutane soon, so my skin is great but I think about taking EPO/Lecithin in a few weeks then again blackheads and oily skin?

are u suppose to put lecithin in the refrigerator too?????

You probably don't need to refrigerate Lecithin capsules, but the granules need to be refrigerated. It wouldn't hurt to refrigerate them either way.

--

Regarding the topic, I too found some success with Evening Primrose Oil and Lecithin supplementation, but started getting GI distress after two weeks and had to stop. After doing some reading, I started supplementing with Nutiva Hemp Oil instead, which has 500 mg of GLA, 2500mg of Omega-3 ALA and 25mg of Omega-3 SDA, and took it with 1200mg lecithin, and I believe this has helped to clear up the acne on my cheeks and make my skin smoother. I also drink a small glass of Tempt Unsweetened Hemp Milk every day which also has GLA and is delicious. :)

Hi Quirky,

Do you know if all hemp oil would have the same benefits? I recently bought some hempseed oil, which I surprisingly found at the grocery store, and I've just been using it to make salad dressings or eat with food in general.

To Everyone,

I started taking EPO 5 days ago but stopped today because it seems to be giving me some serious cysts as well as stomach issues. I can't think of anything else that would be causing it and now that I've stopped it I'll see if I start to feel better.

I was taking 500mg 2x a day for 5 days and started noticing that my appetite was horrible, I barely wanted to eat anything and felt nauseous. Then I got 3 new breakouts on my right jawline and on top of that I felt crampy.

Anyone else have this happen? I always figured my acne was hormonal since the 2 times I've been relatively clear were when I was pregnant and when I was on Yaz birth control.

Another thing to note is that EPO seems to be good for women who suffer from PMS and honestly I really don't get PMS. I don't get severe cramps or horrible mood swings or any real changes around my period (except for certain birth control which will do that).

Just wondering if I'm being premature in stopping the EPO or if maybe it's just not what my body needs.

Sky,

I've been taking 1000 mg/day of EPO for two weeks now and have developed three large, pus-filled cysts on my chin. I was actually reading this thread to see if anyone else had similar effects - and whether or not I should stop the EPO. Did your cysts subside after stopping?

I just hate that I'm one of the few few people to actually get acne with this stuff.

Yeah I didn't get anymore once those cleared up and I felt a lot better too. I'm sure it could have been my dose or maybe I should have given it longer, but I'm doing fine without it.

Evening primrose pills work for me with I combine them with taking a list of other vitamins on a daily basis. Multi-vitamins don't work for me. This vitamins I take daily are 9 different bottles of vitamins. This includes zinc, d-3, copper, potassium, b-complex, vitamin c, vitamin e, flaxseed oil, and evening primrose oil.

Found this page as well. Started taking borage oil not for acne, but for dry eyes suggested by dr. micheal lagne on dryeyezone.com to be taken with omega 3.

I also broke out. I rarely get acne im 26 and very rarely get acne after 3 runs of accutane.

I blamed it on starting a new job and stress. But then i remembered 2 weeks ago i had job interviews, and a speech at a wedding, just as stressful but no acne.

This also occurred 3 days into my new job, not the first few days, my skin. Only thing i changed was I added primrose oil.

I broke out on my nose, have not broke out on my nose in like 7 years.

I really wish this would have worked.

Just a note though my diagnoses is that I consume enough omega 6 already and gla. I cook and use alot of vegetable oil. For us people who do get enough, GLA becomes pro inflammatory taken to much. There are two studies and dr. lagne also stated you need to be very careful because it can become pro inflammatory. Now foods even recommends you dont take it over 6 months.

Now perhaps taking a low dose of primose oil would fix this, but im worried about the risks and it also causing acne.

Im not going to try evening primrose oil for now. I think i may down the line when this flare up the worst i had in years goes away. Perhaps the lower dosage would be ok. But im pretty sure i get enough omega 6 in my diet.

I think those of us who do get enough are having bad results since again it becomes pro inflammatory if we get to much.

Can I take evening primrose oil and grounded flaxseed together?

I am currently taking 1 table spoon of grounded flax seed in the mornings with lots of water. Later in the day I take 1300mg 2x of evening primrose oil.

I'm not so sure about EPO. I started taking one capsule of EPO per day about 2 weeks ago, and I've developed several huge pustules on my chin and a few smaller ones and red spots on my chest and neck. This is VERY strange.

I didn't know that taking omega 3-6-9 with EPO might not be good until I read this thread. Maybe I'm getting to much GLAs. I don't know. I have been taking a 3-6-9 for over a year.

I'm going to discontinue the EPO and see if the acne clears up which I totally think it will!

EPO also makes me feel very dizzy sometimes, like if I take it on an empty stomach.

I really hope people come back to this thread and give more updates!

If you have trouble digesting oils, then it's best to just apply EPO topically.

I know this thread is really old. But this is my first post. Read the top for info about EPO. The rest is my ramblings.

I have to talk about evening primrose oil because it is one of the only things that has ever helped my acne/rosacea. Before going into a loooong story, I just want to say that the hormonal acne that was on my cheeks around my mouth has almost completely gone away after taking the EPO 2x per day for 2 months. My skin is also really soft and less dry. I still have some pimples on my forehead, which are not from hormones, but I would much rather have that than a face full of pimples. So I am extremely happy with EPO.

Now for the long story:

I'm 23 now and have had acne ever since middle school. During middle school/high school I controlled it with ProActive and was fine, except I also had it on my chest and back which made me really self conscious if I had to wear revealing clothes. Then in college, the ProActive just stopped working for me. Then, I went onto the antibiotic Sulfameth (which is a version of Bactrim).

Ever since going on the Sulfameth I had nice skin. I tried to stop taking it a few times, because as an antibiotic, I knew that it was harming the good bacteria in my body and possibly making me resistant to other antibiotics that I might need in the future. Everytime I tried to stop taking the antibiotics, my skin would get horrible and I would break down and go back on it.

I've been taking sulfameth for 4 years off and on. I know that it's really bad for my body, but nothing else has worked, and it was way easier to focus on my good appearance than what could happen in the future if I got sick from all the antibiotics.

This year (2014) I really felt determined to stop taking the antibiotics because I am in a good place in my life, and I think I'm prepared to possibly have bad skin for a while because I've been feeling really secure in myself. So again, I turned to these message boards to figure out what was working for other people. I've always believed in holistic health AND I always knew that I needed to cure my acne/redness from the inside because I have very sensitive skin. Then I stumbled upon EPO.

I have always had a rough time during my time of the month, so I thought something that can clear acne AND help with PMS symptoms--sure, I'll try it! I love that it is completely over-the-counter, no prescription needed. The amount I spend on it is equal to the amount I spent on buying my prescription antibiotics every month. Disclaimer: I was still taking 1/2 my normal dose of sulfameth during the 1st month of EPO. So, I can't totally credit the EPO, but I did notice a big improvement that I never saw with the Sulfameth alone or any other product/medicine.

This month, I have totally stopped taking the sulfameth. I'm still having breakouts on my forehead, chest, and back, but they are not horrible and I think I can handle it. I'm also trying to really watch my diet to see if anything irritates my skin. I'm willing to experiment a little rather than relying on the antibiotics that I know can harm my body in the long run.

I've often felt really emotional over my skin issues, especially because a lot of the people who are close to me have naturally really good skin and don't have to work at it like I do. Being out of college and going into the professional world is tough when you're not feeling confident and also still feel like you look like a middle schooler going through puberty.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone will even read this, but I just wanted to finally contribute because these forums have helped me so much over the years to know that there are other people going through what I am. Try EPO because as far as I know there are no bad side effects. It might not work for you, but if you suspect your acne is hormonal then it's worth a shot.

Evening primrose oil worked for my hormonal chin acne too. As well as fish oil. When i was taking both my skin was the clearest in all my life since puberty. However cod liver oil gave me the worst acne of my life. When i broke out in huge and deep and very very red acne, I realised that it wasn't normal for my skin to break out this bad and that it all started soon after taking cod liver oil. Not just any cod liver oil. It was a high quality brand to boot. So i stopped taking cod liver oil and my skin stopped breaking out. So to those thinking of trying out cod liver oil to cure your acne, be very careful with it.evenin

Hi all,

I know people are posting with amazing cures all the time so I don't want to say that this is going to 'cure' everyone's acne and it is 'the' treatment for everyone. However, I do want to share my results b/c they've been a shock to me.

Just for a short background, I've had acne for 10 years tried everything. The only thing that ever worked was Diane 35. However, I react badly to bc pills so I had to quit and my acne came back worse than ever afterwards. I was almost at the point of doing another treatment of accutane when I read somewhere that evening primrose oil can regulate hormones and help with acne. I thought, well since I know that my accutane is related to hormones, I should try this....knowing that I've tried a million supplements before that were supposed to "cure" acne. So three weeks ago I started taking 500mg of evening primrose oil with 15 IU's of vitamin E every day. (I also take a multivitamin and Vitamin A everyday). I figured it's probably not going to work so I start scheduling my appointments to get myself accutane.

Three weeks later and I can't believe it. | My skin is clearing. Right now I only have 2 active pimples. The rest of my face is clearing (no active acne, just scars slowly fading). I can't believe this. I've tried everything and this thing I decided to just throw in for kicks is actually working.

I don't know that this is going to work for everyone since I know my acne is hormone related, but if your acne is related to hormones i would suggest adding this to your supplements. It's great b/c you don't have to change your regiment at all.

Good luck to anyone else who tries evening primrose oil.

What's 15 ius of vitamin e?

Was it fermented cod liver oil? The fermented form is FULL of vitamin A, in the most bioavailable form. did you take far too much? Did it make you oily? My s.o. takes it everyday in liquid form from a bottle as his multi vitamin and he thinks it helped clear his back a little. Often times, there is an underlying issue with the gut as some people in this thread have been reporting side effects or acne that coincides with a leaky gut causing proteins to go into the bloodstream. Not good. Causing inflammation. I hope things have gotten better for you and you're still getting some fish omegas.

I just started vitex and evening primrose again, I used to take it for PMDD and it helped with my symptoms but chasteberry interferes with homrones. Now I have skyla and I'm scared to continue the vitex, since it raises progesterone levels which cause the uterine lining to thicken... and boosts FSH/LH. Can anyone tell me if there is really a pregnancy risk with this with a levonogestrel IUD?
