I made a ton of green smoothie mix yesterday. I will be drinking at least 2 per day, maybe more. I'm also eating healthier. No processed foods, no refined flours, no dairy, no added sugar. I'm not going all crazy with the no gluten or lectin and keeping my glycemic index under a microscope. I have good feelings about this. I will be keeping progress in my blog if anyone is interested

Great smoothie tips,thankyou!

I have mixed frozen summer berry mix, these should disguise the greens a bit.

Think i might grow some herbs on the windowsill in the kitchen too :) Feeling inspired as ive just moved to live in a country cottge

Lets hope the smoothies and country air help me!

joeyci91,

Wow!! Sounds like you're doing great! I imagine in a few weeks (possible a few months, but let's hope weeks!) you'll be seeing some real improvements!! I'll try to remember to check out your blog! :)

DaisyMai,

A country cottage? Oh my goodness, how nice!! I'm sure just the "peacefulness" alone will help!! I love being out in the country - it does one's soul much good. :) But yes, I think with the country air, the smoothies and the herbs that you are definitely on your way! hehe :)

Wow, I understand why this thread is still going. I've been making green smoothies for 2 days straight and right after I drink one of them my skin is glowing... that's awesome :)

I put organic golden flax seed, organic spinach, organic romaine, a banana, some organic vanilla, egg whites and extra virgin olive oil in it... it's yummy and has a lot of calories :D

One thing to look out for tho, I'm pretty sure berries would be better in a smoothie than banana, because blended banana must have a pretty high GI imo.

I love these! I've been having these for breakfast some mornings because they're so great in the summer. I like to eat it out of a bowl, it's like a big sorbet.

I usually do:

1 can Goya coconut water

1/2 frozen banana

1 handful frozen mixed berries

1 handful frozen pineapple

1 tbsp sunflower seed butter

2 handfuls baby spinach

I bought Kale too, but it's far too tempting to use that for Kale chips instead!

Just thought I'd drop in to say that since starting green smoothies my DHEA-S levels are dropping! Of course I've made other lifestyle changes, but this is the one I'm most consistent with because it's part of my breakfast routine.

They started at 420 and are now at 347 (range for women my age is 200-300, so I'm still high). Hopefully I can bring it down to below 300.

Thanks ABG Fairy!!!

Hey ABG Fairy. Two weeks ago I started on an anti-inflammatory diet and a nightly green smoothie is one of the staples my regimen. I wanted to clarify something, though. Do you recommend eating a variety of cruciferous greens or will just one suffice? I just recently began adding kale to my smoothies and it's currently the only cruciferous green I use (I thought spinach was cruciferous but apparently not). Will the kale alone be enough to see the effects of the smoothies or do I need to add more vegetables to the batch?

Sorry if you already addressed this question somewhere. I read the first post but didn't want to search through 125 pages to find an answer. :P

Jofo,

Welcome! :) haha, yes, I thought spinach was a cruciferous too - for a long time!! Just recently found out otherwise! For the greens, it's fine to just do kale, but in a week or so, use a different green. The kale should get you great results. Collards would be great too if you can find those, and even though spinach isn't a cruciferous, many get great results with it as well. It tends to be the favorite around here. Sometimes I'll do only spinach for a couple of weeks and then maybe collards for a week or so. It depends a lot too on what's available when I shop! Oh, you might check out the frozen greens too. They are nice to have around if you run out of fresh greens. Good luck! :)

Thanks for the advice! Would collards taste okay in a fruit smoothie? I'm trying to stick to vegetables that don't have a detectable taste in the blend because I don't think I could drink something that tasted like vegetables.

I sprang for kale and spinach because I heard the taste gets drowned out underneath the fruit, which has turned out to be true. So I'm trying to find more vegetables with similarly dull flavors that won't taint the smoothie's fruitiness. :)

No problem! I find collards to have a stronger taste, but I really like the taste and don't find collards to be bitter. You should definitely give them a try! :)

So I've been doing these for two days now, and I was just wondering if there is a best time to do it, or does it not matter? I wake up around 8 every morning, eat a handful of almonds and granola, and then exercise for an hour or so. Would i get better results drinking the green smoothie before exercising? Also, is it best to have these on an empty stomach? Thanks!

^ Fruit is a great thing to eat first thing in the morning, as it's very cleansing, so I would advise doing the smoothies then, but at the same time, you have to do what will work for you. I think having the smoothie following exercise and the granola/almonds is perfectly fine. The main thing is to get in some blended greens at some point in your day. :)

I'm still loving green smoothies ^_^

I love that it's summer and I can just go outside in the morning and grab a handful of lettuce and swiss chard from earth boxes outside of my door. It's awesome because I know that there will not be 5 minutes passed from when those greens were in the ground to when they're in my mouth, and that they are 100% organic. I love it!

Earth boxes are something everyone should check out-even if you just have a balcony on an apartment or a tiny plot of ground you can grow huge veggies, chemical free. They're about $30 each, but so worth it. They're basically plastic bins that have a special resevoir to hold water, which provides the constant perfect level of moisture for your plants. There's a layer of plastic that covers the soil on top to keep it from drying out, and the plants grow through the holes where you plant them in the soil. Kind of hard to explain. But the result is huge, organic plants that produce more than you can stand. They're perfect for people who aren't very good at gardening, or who have little space to plant in. Compared to the price you'd pay for greens all spring/summer long, this is worth it.

:D

Cello,

Thanks for the Earth Box tip! I had heard about these long ago and had forgotten all about them! They definitely sounded really cool. Hmm... I just might have to get one of these. I love that you use your own greens! Very cool, and so much better for you! Nothing beats home grown veggies when it comes to nutrition (at least from what I hear!)!

Sounds good! I will try this next summer.^_^

We have a blender, but I'm worried about sugar levels. I'll try mixing apples, carrots, and lettuce together and see if that helps my body pimples at all. I'm also fasting so yeah.

Clodbluffers,

I think that would be a great combo! Both carrots and apples have great health benefits. Pears are low in sugar as well - so are berries. Good luck! :)

Taylorxh1089,

I just drink one green smoothie a day. If you want to drink it throughout the day, that is fine as well. The main thing is to be sure to get in a good portion of blended greens every day. :)

clodbluffers , make 100% veggiesmoothies

You can for example take spinach and lighten it up with some cucumber and iceberglettuce. That way it wont taste that bad.

^ Veggie smoothies are great, and with all the veggies, adding in half an apple or so to sweeten it slightly would be fine I think. Adding in a little lemon juice helps as well. There are recipes for veggies smoothies and well as blended greens/veggie soups in the first post. :)

According to Dr. Fuhrman, it's vital to up your carotenoid content if you have acne.

That explains why the vitamin regimen Dr. Balch recommends for acne includes carotenoid complex. It is hard to find carotenoid complex in pill form, but I buy one online by the brand Country Life It is a fair price for a 2 month supply.

Venus in Virgo Gal,

Is it more like a food tablet? If it's isolated beta-carotene, be careful, because like isolated vitamin A, it has been liked to problems. It's safest to get carotenoids from actual foods. I think it has something to do with the body needing to get all the phytochemicals at once rather than isolated... I don't fully understand it myself! haha :)
