Sorry for my ignorance, but every smoothie I make each day consists of a handful of frozen berries (strawberries/raspberries/blueberries), 1 apple, juiced orange, juiced lemon, 1 kiwifruit and 1 pear; the only veg is a handful of spinach. I add 2 cups of water.
Now this makes a good 9/10 glasses or so. I consume 6 during the day (one glass each time I drink water) and fiinish the remainder the following morning or something, before making a new brew.
If I have 6 glasses a day, does that constitute 6 servings of fruit/veg? Or does the typical serving comprise of what I put in it?
The reason I ask is, since there's only one veg, whether that's sufficient (given what I currently add to my smoothie determines one or two servings of greens). Another concern is consuming too much fruit.
I'm sure it's been mentioned here, but there's so many pages to trawl through specifically.
Thanks in advance.

Servings as established by the USDA and their pyramids are useless criteria
Even they realized that they had no meaning or purpose and the new pyramid uses specific amount
But I would ignore what the pyramid says anyway and not follow their suggested amount ... you can have more fruits and veggies than what is their guidelines, certainly more nuts and oils and less starches
What actually concerns me is that you blend fruits and veggies and consume them the next days
Blended plants or juices fruits oxidize rather quickly and lose many of their volatile nutrients
Juices and smoothies should be eaten within 15 minutes not to make them less nutritious or healthy
Thanks for the reply. But I have to ask, doesn't that defeat the purpose of this whole smoothie thing? I mean, consuming it in 15 mins? The original poster suggests making enough to sustain a whole day, and if there's too much, to store the remainer in the fridge to drink the follwing morning. But I always wondered whether nutrients would be quickly lost. Does that mean I'll have to divide everything by quarters, and drink 3 glasses in 15 mins or something?
If that's the case, it's probably better consuming fruit/veg by themselves, throughout the day.
^ I just make like 2 cups and drink it all as one meal.
The smoothie shouldn't be your ONLY source of fruits and vegetables. Eat other fruits and veggies throughout the day. The smoothies are good because blended foods are more easily digested and the nutrients are better assimilated.

With that much fruit, I'd do at least 3 large handfuls of greens. Maybe do two, and then try adding three. I think 1 apple is considered 1 serving of fruit? I'm not really sure about all that.

No. Just that you should make a quantity little enough so that you can consume it at once
If I want smoothies 6 times a day for example, it means that each time I put a bunch of greens and one fruit in the blender and drink immediately the smoothie
If that's the case, it's probably better consuming fruit/veg by themselves, throughout the day.
Eating fruits throughout the day would require washing, peeling, cutting ... if you want a smoothie while you're at it you can just throw the veggies and the fruits in the blender and blend.
Making smoothies 6 times (just as a example) is not more time consuming than eating fruits and veggies 6 times a day. Yeah you'll need to cleanse the blender but you can just wash it at night and just put very hot water in the container between each blending session
Newsflash!

sweating is good for acne?
my friend who used to suffer from acne said it helps him maintain zit-free skin. he works out in a gym regularly. i think i also read somewhere or maybe heard from him that it helps flush out toxins from the body.
I agree! Exercising helps with circulation, so I think it would definitely help!
Im going to try this...
Can someone list the ones they like the most and how they make them so we can have like a mini Smoothie maker book 😀
My favorite ingredients are: baby mixed greens, baby spinach, apples, pears, bananas, frozen pineapple, frozen peaches, and frozen tropical mix. I also like adding honey and cinnamon. Any combination of any of these ingredients would be really yummy. 🙂
my favorite green smoothie recipes:
1 orange (juiced)
1 mango
1 cup pineapple (demi-frozen)
2 handfuls organic spinach
2.5 cups water
1 cup ice cubes
1-2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon flax meal (optional)
1 banana
1 mango
1 pear
2 handfuls green-leaf lettuce
1-2 tbsp honey
2 cups water
4 ice cubes
1 tbsp flax meal
1 apple (with peel)
1 mango (almost completely ripe)
1 orange (juiced, w/ a little pulp)
2 handfuls of romaine lettuce
2.5 cups of cold water
2 tablespoons of raw wild honey.
1 banana
1 kiwi
2 handfuls romaine/green-leaf lettuce
2 cups water
1 tbs honey
1 tbs flax meal
1 tbs extra-virgin coconut oil
EDIT: some more
1 banana
1 fuji apple
1 orange (peeled)
2 handfuls of green-leaf lettuce
2.5 cups water
1 tablespoon flaxmeal
1 tablespoon wild honey
1 tablespoon extra virgin coconut oil
OK - this is not a green smoothie, but still kinda nice and good for you:
1/2 cup of nuts (I use almonds or hazelnuts, but I presume any would do)
1 1/2 cups of water
1 large banana
1/2 teaspoon of pure 100% cocoa powder (i.e. the kind that contains no dairy, sugar or other additives of whatever kind)
Optional: A couple of drops of maple syrup. I assume stevia would work just as well for those of you who are avoiding sugar, but I can't find stevia here so I cheat with the maple syrup
Blend together (I have a high powered blender so I can blend this until smooth). Yummy - kind of like a chocolate banana milkshake.
Hi all!
This smoothie thing sounds very good, I read almost everything. I think im going to try this, but a few questions first:
1. What are you eating beside the smoothies? Normal food or more specified acne diet?
2. I'm on a huge vitamin regmien (eating 20tabs /day), and eating strong doses of each vitamin (following the recommend label on each bottle), won't these smoothies give me an overdose of vitamins ? (become m ore toxic?)
3. Has the smoothies helped you reduced oil production?
//Max

1. Im guessing just with a normal diet, just eat good things and dont do over the top on the crap otherwise it would just cancel it out.
2. You shouldn't be taking that many vitamins anyways!
By doing the smoothies im sure you'll get enough into your body.
3. Not tried the smoothies yet but when i was eating 10+ apples a day, HELL YEAH!
I just couldn't keep up with it lol and got sick of apples, now im back on them starting at 5 day atm.

1. less sweets, low-no sugar, low salt/sodium (avoiding iodized salt), low-non fat, less meat, no pork, more veggies, more fruits, healthier snacks, low fat, low cholesterol, no fried foods, lots of fiber from wheat loaf (w/ yeast), whole rolled oats, flax meal, brown rice, at most 3x/week poached/boiled eggs (sometimes, free-ranged eggs), less-no foods w/ hydrogenated oils, no dairy
2. i am too. it's helped me get better complexion when i wake up and reduce the tane side-effects (im basing my dosages on leo kiesen's suggestions on supplementation).
here's what's on my signature right now:
on acnetrex isotretinoin, 10mg/day (5th month) || 3 topicals a few times a week || 4 cups green smoothies a day or every other day || healthy diet following kiesen's & other's principles || vitamin C from 1/2-1 lime/green lemon juice diluted in a glass/cup of water || vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) 400 IU with yeast-free selenium 100 mcg and lecithin from soy 1600 mg (2x/day) ||optima omega: marine lipid concentrate 1100 mg, omega 3 EPA 150 mg, DHA 100 mg, other omega 3 fatty acids 50 mg, and deodorized garlic oil 1 mg (2x/day) || soy lecithin granules 1 tablespoon || calcium 1000 mg with magnesium (from magnesium oxide, chelate) 25 mg, zinc (from zinc oxide chelate) 25 mg, vitamin D3 (as choecalciferol) 200 IU, betaine HCI 100 mg, and glutamic acid HCI 100 mg || bee pollen 500 mg (2x/day)
3. cant tell. im on isotret. it's the one that's aggressively reducing sebum production. the supplementation i think helps, though. the supplementation is supposed to help balance the hormone activity. also read ACNEwise on sebum production
try the green smoothies.
- green leafy vegetables such as spinach are a good source of magnesium- magnesium is necessary for converting the essential fatty acid AL into Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)
- GLA is the single largest essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency because it's so rare in foods
- magnesium plays a major role in normalizing hormone production and use (especially with calcium)
- magnesium is an anti-stress mineral

Max, I'm happy that you're going to give the smoothies a try! I think you'll be happy with the results.
1. I eat very healthy. I stick to organic, whole foods like whole grains (brown rice (and brown rice cakes with nut butter), oats, whole grain crackers, sprouted grain pastas and tortillas), fruits, veggies (I like the pre-cut, pre-washed frozen kind), greens (of course, hehe) beans (I use the canned a lot - hey, better than no beans, right?) haha, diced, canned tomatoes, legumes, nuts (nut butters, unroasted nuts), vegenaise (awesome alternative to mayonaisse) olive oil and apple cider vinegar for dressing. I rarely ever eat dairy, and I only eat very small portions of meat. I do have a sweet tooth, but I buy my sweets at places like Whole Foods. I buy sweets that are free of chemicals and hydrogenated oils.
2. I'd be very careful of taking that many supplements, especially if they are synthetic. You want to stick with "food based" supplements. As for getting too many vitamins from foods (smart question, by the way), you don't to worry about that if you're getting them from plant foods. For example, Harvard did studies showing that it's very possible to develop toxicity from synethic vitamin A, but if you're getting your vitamin A from plants foods.... have no fear. 🙂
3. Honestly, I haven't noticed a reduction in oil production. 🙁 But hey, I'm not breaking out anymore with scar producing blemishes, so I'm very happy. 🙂
