Isn't fruit high in sugar content? Won't over consumption make you gain weight and/or encorage further breakouts? I'm just basing this on regular fruit juices - the're very high in sugar content.

Yes, I'm ignorant - but otherwise feel free to correct me! I too would like to try these smoothies if it's not going to make me gain weight/aggravate acne.

You would need like 1kg of orange to make 200g of fruit juices and that's why they're so concentrated in sugar unlikes fruits. Also what matters is not only sugar content but how quickly the sugar is absorbed

Smoothie contains the whole fruits with the fibers and the fibers of the plant and the sugar is not absorbed quickly. Smoothies contain sugar, fats and protein but with the juice you just have pure sugar in the most concentrated form

Thanks for this Danny - it was nice simple explanation that everyone could understand. 🙂

Few green smoothies recipes:

1 large, ripe (preferably chilled) mango

4 cups romaine lettuce, chopped

1 cup spinach, chopped

1/4 cup unsweetened almond or rice milk

Peel and chop mango and place in food processor or blender. Place part of the lettuce and spinach in. Blend. Add soymilk and more lettuce. Blend. Continue to add more lettuce to taste. Blend until creamy. (I really don't know how much lettuce I put in. Just add enough to get a nice creamy mango flavor but still get a good amount of greens)

----------

8 ounces baby greens

1 orange

juice of 1/4 lemon

Blend in a blender and serve

-----------

6 ounces baby romaine lettuce

6 ounces organic baby spinach

1/4 cup almond milk

8 dates

Blend all ingredients together

-----------

1/2 avocado

1 banana

5 ounces baby romaine lettuce

5 ounces organic baby spinach

Blend avocado with the banana, then add lettuce and spinach

------------

1 cup frozen organic spinach

1 cup frozen raspberries

8 ounces romaine lettuce

1 whole orange (peeled and seeded)

1 cup orange Juice

Add all ingredients to the blender and go! Best to use a high powered blender or Vita-Mix. It is a bit brownish in color due to the raspberries, but tastes great. The frozen veggies and fruits make the consistency of the salad much better.

-------------

1 apple

1/2 avocado

1 banana

1-2 dates (or 2 Pop'ems)

10 ounces organic baby spinach

Blend all ingredients in Vita-Mix until smooth and creamy

-------------

1 each small tomato, red or green pepper

1/2 small cucumber

1 tbsp. nutritional yeast

I tsp. cold-pressed oil (optional)

Juice of AA lemon or lime

5-6 leaves romaine lettuce

3-4 stalks celery or fresh fennel, chopped

Place cut up pieces of tomato, pepper and cucumber along with yeast, oil and lemon juice into blender. (Nutritional yeast, available in health-food stores, is particularly flavorful.) Blend until smooth and liquid. Add romaine leaves one at a time. Add celery or fennel; blend additional 2-3 minutes.

-------------------

of the diet.

6 oz. baby romaine

6 oz. baby spinach

4 figs soaked overnight in

1/4 cup rice milk

1 Tea sp. apple vinegar

Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy

-------------

8-10 oz. romaine or

leaf lettuce

1 orange, peeled

1 cup fresh pineapple

1 Tea sp. apple vinegar

Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy

-------------

8 oz. romaine lettuce

4 oz. baby spinach

1 oz. raw sunflower seeds

1 oz. pine nuts

1 oz. raw cashews

1 banana

Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy

sorry i dont have time to read this whole thread, but i just wanted to share some tips i have for green smoothies:

pears work best for me... ive tried apples and the texture was too watery and way too sweet.

use parsley.... parsley makes the taste of the green smoothie very nice, no matter what other greens you include. parsley is very pleasant on its own, and seems to over-power the not-so-pleasant taste of kale and dandelion greens, etc.

Thanks for your tips! I want to start using parsley! 🙂

Danny answered this really well. One more thing too is that greens help to balance out the fruit sugars. 🙂 Most people doing green smoothies lose weight.

or IT's suggestion:

banana, pineapple, raspberry, spinach smoothie (she recommends baby spinach as its not as bitter as the regular one) with honey and cinnamon

Yes, the baby spinach is very mild. In fact, I don't think it even has much of a taste. Unless you use a ton of it, it really is undetectable in the smoothies.

Few green smoothies recipes:

Nice of you to post all those. 🙂

It depends on your budget

Almost any blender will do it if you want to save money and are not to demanding ...

But if you're looking for something worth quality and can spend 100-200 $ more I would suggest you

to buy a reconditioned Vitamix blender

They last forever and do everything in the best way

If you just want to spend 60$ then whatever blender is good

You may try Magic Bullet or Philips HR 1780 or the HR 1701 or the HR 1791

They are not as good as the Vitamix but do what they're supposed to do

The Vitamix is also a a juicer and if you want a juicer too then there's the Philips HR 1841

I won't suggest you to buy a cheap unknown brand blender because they break easily and blend

unefficiently. I'm not a fan of brands but I've to admit that as far as electronic is concerned the difference between a Pioneer and a Majestic or an Acer and a Toshiba are not jst a matter of having a big brand name attached to it

I just had my first one of these. I thought it was gonna taste terrible but it was pretty good. :) I'll try to drink them fairly regularly since I never eat salads/leafy greens... I'd way rather have them this way.

I just used:

1 green apple (peeled)

1 banana

2 handfuls of spring mix

1 cup of water

A high-powered blender like a Vita-Mix. They will do the best job blending the cellular walls of the fruits adn greens. You can find them on ebay. Victoria Boutenko, creator or the green smoothies, says that a 10 year old Vita Mix would be better than a brand new, normal blender. With normal blenders, you have to keep the blades sharp. Vita Mix run so fast that you never have to sharpen their blades.

I'm happy to hear you liked your first smoothie! 🙂 I agree - I much prefer to blend and drink my fruits/greens too! It's so much easier! 🙂

^ ^ ^ Just so you know... it's cellulose - not cellular, when talking about the walls of fiber in green leafy veggies...

Is there any way to add more calories to the smoothies? I'm on a bulking phase right now, and I'm not at all wanting to lose weight. That's one of the reasons why I stopped drinking green tea.

Well I already add protein powder, but I'll remember to pick up some coconut oil the next time I go to the store. How much should I use?

Just depends on how many calories you want... for my breakfast smoothie I do a nice spoonful, which is probably something like 14g fat.

See how you do with the protein powder. It's best to eat fruits alone or with other leafy greens, because they do not digest well with other foods. I believe this to be the case despite the fact that all the foods in the smoothie are blended.

Here's a pretty good article on protein by Dr. Joel Fuhrman (one of the doctors for Discovery Health Channel): http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/healt...onutrients.html

Any advice for dry body skin and something that can be added to a green smoothie which may alleviate some of the dryness?

I'd say coconut oil, and it should blend and digest nicely with the smoothie as well. The greens have small amounts of essential fatty acids and will help too. 🙂

Have a free day!

Like you eat super healthy and strict for 6 days and on the seven day you eat whatever you want be it a pizza with friends, hot dogs at the park, french fries

You don't get accustomed and bored with your regimen, you keep your metabolism going, you prevent cravings and gorging because it's not like you must eat as much as you can of junk food once you started cause you're talling yourself "tomorrow I'll start again and NO junk food for ever" you're just telling yourself to wait till sunday ... You overall diet remains as healthy as possible and that single day of moderate junk food eating won't affect you that much but way less than yo-yo dieting with periods of painful super healthy eating and craving and period gorging till throwing up

Great advice. I think it's okay too to have a little "junk food" everyday actually, haha. I go for the 80% healthy, 20% whatever I want. I don't think I'd have the willpower to go a whole week without a little chocolate. 🙂 I try to make my junk food fairly healthy though - no hydrogenated fats, and I try to keep it all natural.

These smoothies are great! Been drinking them for about 10 days, and after a few mishaps (some of them tasted vile) I have stumbled across a mixture which my family loves!

Strawberries

Watermelon

Peaches

Parsley

Mixed lettuce

Mint

Also, I have been adding some powdered MSM into the mix, which really doesn't affect the taste, but I have heard it works wonders for healing the skin very quickly.

How's everyone doing on their green smoothies? I've been doing this for maybe three weeks and my skin hasn't cleared up but it looks better. Most of my breakouts have faded and I'm mostly stuck with uneven facial color. Also, I mostly use spinach instead of rotating my greens. I haven't died yet. My smoothies always contain bannana and spinach. For another fruit I've had blueberries, raspberries, apples, peaches. My favorite so far has been blueberries. Peaches and pineapple are good for the frozen bit. Also I'm fine with about two and a half cups of water.

I usually put in flax seed oil but sometimes I forget to. I found some tablets of MSM that I haven't used in a while so I started taking those today as well with my smoothies. Good thing it expires next year sometime. Anyway even if this won't cure your acne 100% its still awesome. These smoothies give me a lot of energy and make me feel healthier and all that good stuff.

Newsflash!

No one incorporate spinach(at least for now) into your smoothies unless you want to be infected w/ e. coli 157h7 or whatever it exactly is.

there's an outbreak in 8 u.s. states from bagged spinach. scarry...
