I tried the green smoothie and unfortunately I don't think I have the will-power to do them on a regular basis. (I think it's the bits of greens that are floating around. Makes me want a juicer...) However, this thread has inspired me to incorporate more green leafies into my diet.
Baby spinach, cucumber, and tuna salad with a splash of balsamic vinaigrette has become my new favorite lunch!
gMARIAs,
So glad you like your new blender so much, and I really hope your first week on the smoothies goes well!! Please let us know! It's great as well that you have a new interest in eating more raw foods. Raw is really important. I like to still eat cooked food as well, like sweet potatoes, tomatoes, squash, etc. I probably do about 60% raw/40% cooked. My main focus is high-nutrient foods.
Lady Odd Duck,
Glad you're doing more greens! Remember though that when they're blended, you get four times the amount of nutrition. If you're getting chunks in your smoothies, try blending longer. Or, it may just meant that you need a more powerful blender. I used to get chunks in mine when I used a very old Vita-Mix. With my new one though, my smoothies are very smooth - no more lettuce chunks. haha gMARIAs got an Oster blender at Walmart for $44 and is very happy with it. She talks about it right above your post in case that helps!

Yep! My oster blends everything perfectly smooth. The ONLY thing it doesn't blend are the seeds when I use strawberries - I get small seeds, but no chunks of greens.
We had NOTHING to blend or eat today at my house, so I got suckered into pizza 🙁 Surely, my face is doomed, with or without green smoothies. After an expected breakout and a week of green smoothies cheat free, I'll report how my skin is doing.
gMaria: Pizza is probably the food I miss most though strangely enough I'm not sure it actually breaks me out - I just haven't tested it yet.. oh how I hope it doesn't.
As for blenders, mines something called a Kenwood multi-pro. It does a fairly good job of reducing my salad smoothies into green juice, though it can be a bit thick since I usually don't blend for more than 40 seconds.
I experimented with these in the past for a couple months and they didn't really do much, maybe made things worse. I'm going to try again though with no fruit, just blended kale water and ice. I think it will be disgusting, but kale is so dam good for you! I'll report back on how it goes.
andersoj,
Collards are great as well. If you're okay with lemons, I'd definitely add some lemon juice, as it'll make it less bitter. Green apples are a low-sugar fruit, and you'd be surprised what half a green apple, in addition to the lemon juice, would do... throw in some parsley as well, and I think you'd be surprised at how refreshing your kale smoothies can be. Even without the apple, the lemon juice and parsley will help a lot. I really hope you see some results this time!!

Thanks for the tip fairy girl!
Can anyone tell help me??
I have decided to buy kale (dont know why I didnt before??).
And i put in an apple water handful bluberries, then how much kale??
I eat this with a tablespoon of coconut oil and 100% organic sprouted buckwheat spread with organic raw almond butter.
I was also thinking of adding in chia seeds
I usually buy 150 or 250gram packets and I put a lot of spinach compared to my fruits and water. I would say 3 handfuls, 30grams?
It's so delicious! I did try once downing the spinach (so I could just have the fruit juice afterwards) but I didn't really like it because you would still feel guilty ....
I agree, a handful of berries, half a green apple, some lemon juice, celery and 1/4 chopped up banana (tip: don't blend chopped bananas, you will drink and taste some banana pieces - yuM!) MAKES IT TASTE GREAT!
The spinach makes it filling.
I LOVE GREEN SMOOTHIES!
I'm not going to experiment with kale or bok choy (I know, I'm a bad boy) because I love spinach too much. It's beautiful, green, and tastes like nothing.
pangarl: I missed pizza for a few days, actually. I really don't crave it anymore. It's weird. I only ate it because it's all we had.
My skin doesn't really seem to be negatively reacting to them, even when I put in 1/2 banana! Hoo-ha!
I hasn't been long enough to see if that pizza will screw up my skin or not, but I don't think the smoothies will be too bad for me unless I use tons of bananas or pineapple or something. I do enjoy the tartness of just using berries, though. I'm going to start adding flax seed.
Can anyone recommend a recipe that can be used while on an anti candida diet? So the only fruit is allowed is lemons. Thanks
Well, my recommendation is to attempt using berries. I was following an anti-candida diet and just used a berry medley. They're low sugar and taste potent enough to overpower the greens. It hasn't broken my skin out yet.
Before I used berries, I DID try something that was alright.
Baby Spinach
Unsweetened vanilla almond milk (almond breeze)
Lemon juice (1/2 lemon)
Stevia (sweet leaf brand)
I can't give you exact measurements, because it may vary based on your taste. It wasn't as good as using berries, but it was definitely tolerable.
Glad everyone's doing so well with their smoothies!
Adam,
With the kale, opt for at least one large handful of kale, but if you can do more according to taste, go for it! The more greens the better!
Goodlife,
I always have at least an apple or so in mine, so I don't know of any all veggie recipes for you. I would try a recipe with various greens, parsley (tastes so fresh!) and for a little sweetness, carrots. You could throw in tomatoes or maybe a tomato powder as well. Celery, avocado (adds creaminess), nuts/seeds, cucumbers, bell pepper, cilantro... lots of combos you can experiment with. Good luck!
I think I might give this one a go without the two pieces of fruit.
aA bunch parsley (gives a wonderful *fresh* taste to the smoothie!)
a1 handful spinach
aA cucumber
a2-3 stalks of celery
a1 or 2 pieces of fruit (an apple or a pear)
a1 lemon (peel, cut in half, discard large seeds, add to blender)
a2-3 cups water
aBlend
Eddie,
Let us know about the oats! haha
goodlife,
I'm glad you're going to give that one a try. The parsley is so fresh that it kinda takes away the need to add any fruits, and adding the lemon really helps too. Let us know how you like it! Do keep in mind though that all the greens and veggies will help offset any fruit sugars added. Also, with candida, a lot of people have gotten over it with simply eating a very high-nutrient diet, which in turn, ups their immune system enough to fight off the candida. These people didn't cut out fruit. They just ate very nutrient-rich foods. I know it's hard knowing what to do though with all the different theories out there! At least we all can agree that greens and vegetables are a good thing to do!! haha
I really like this idea! Even if it doesn't clear up my skin, I want to eat healthier (and I love making fruit smoothies, so adding some greens won't be a huge change!)
I noticed in many posts you recommended kale and collard greens in addition to spinach. What nutritional/acne fighting properties do kale and collard greens have that spinach does not? Is Romaine lettuce okay too?
Thanks, and I can't wait to try this!
Hope your first green smoothie goes well!! Kale and collards are the most nutrient-dense foods around. You can see scores here: http://www.drfuhrman.com/library/article17.aspx . Romaine lettuce is not a cruciferous veggie like kale, collards and spinach. Cruciferous greens will do more to clear your skin, and all greens are a little different, which is why it's great to do a variety.
Just had my my first smoothie.
I used
Handful of Parsley
Half a cucumber
2 celery stalks
Handful of spinach
2 cups of water
It wasn't particularly pleasant, any ideas how to tweak this a bit? I decided not to have any fruit at all except for cucumber, as I am on an anti candida diet.

Honestly, none of those seem like they'd taste too awesome together. I say you should still try adding a low sugar fruit, like berries. It'll make a world of difference.
I've also found that cucumbers made anything and everything I made, taste awful.
If you're that opposed to fruit, why not make a soup? I did this the other day:
Red Pepper Spinach Soup:
Red pepper
Avocado
a little almond milk
a garlic clove
a little sea salt
onion
baby spinach
I don't have measurements. I do everything by taste. It was pretty yummy.
goodlife,
gMARIAs has some great ideas! You might try this too:
parsley
spinach
lemon juice
1/4-1/2 avocado
water
It probably won't be the tastiest drink in the world, but should be drinkable, nonetheless.
Also, gMARIAs idea of soups is a great idea for you. The key is to get in some "blended greens," and I give a basic soup recipe that uses blended greens on the first page of this thread. I have more soup recipes too if you need them.
I have been making green smoothies for a few months now. About 5 days ago I decided to start recording recipes to the smoothies that turned out with a great taste. So here are some recipes for green smoothie newbies...
**12 oz. of water, ice, tangerine juice (I use about 2 oz. juice, 5 oz. water, 5 oz. ice - it depends on how cold and smooth you want it).
**Small apple
**Mixed frozen fruit (strawberries, pineapple, peaches, mango)
**Baby organic baby spinach (4-5 handfuls... I could of added more... if you are a newbie then try 2 handfulls).
**This makes about fl. 32 oz.
**12 oz. water, ice, tangerine juice
**4 medium strawberries
** 1/3 of a pineapple
**small handful frozen berries (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries)
** 1/4 tsp. organic agave nectar
**1-2 handfuls of kale (sufficient for newbies... I could of added more for me)
**Makes about 28 fl. oz.
**Blend for a long time when using kale... At least I need to!
ENJOY! Message me if you want more recipes or have any questions!
Those sound like great recipes! I would caution those prone to acne to be careful with fruit juice though, as they should avoid the concentration of fruit sugars. I think sometimes people get too caught up with recipes. The basic recipe on my first post is really all one needs. You have your greens and then you just mix up the fruit. Fruit is so tasty that with whatever combination, it's going to be pretty good. They way to mess up a smoothie is to add too many greens, to not de-stem, and to start adding veggies. If you stick with the basic recipe - 1 or two handfuls of greens, a main fruit, and an assorted mixture of frozen fruits/berries (I list the best ones to combine.. some, like grapefruit, are better left out), your smoothies should always turn out tasty.
