I was wondering what type of acne people who have been doing the green smoothies have? I have pretty moderate acne and have oily skin. My main problem are closed comedones and just a general uneven and "rough" looking skin.

I want to try and make the green smoothies but before I buy the blender and all the food I was just curious at how successful it was for acne.

Thanks!

^ Regardless of what type of acne, blended greens are the most powerful foods for your skin, and anyone with acne should be making them a huge part of their diet. For severe acne, I would say to go a step further and do vegetable juicing as well. Also, acne or no acne, blended foods are incredibly nutritious. I use my blender (I have a Vita-Mix) to make smoothies, fruit sorbets, vegetable soups, sauces and salad dressings. It is the most used appliance I have. With or without green smoothies, I couldn't live without it! My foods would be pretty boring otherwise. The blender allows me to make really tasty, high-nutrient dishes. I would consider making the investment in a blender, regardless of your skin. If you do get one, I really hope you'll see the results you're hoping for and that you'll also venture out and really enjoy your blender! :)

SMT, if you're mostly worried about comedones and "rough" skin, I'd definately give the smoothie route a try. Before going on the smoothies I had really rough-looking bumpy skin over the upper parts of my face. While I haven't completely gotten rid of whiteheads yet, after 2 months of smoothies my skin is completely smooth now. Definitely a big improvement to be had, espescially if you're not someone who gets a lot of vegetable matter to begin with.

What blender do you use ABG Fairy?

I want to try some green smoothies to see if I can tolerate fruit, if not simply blend some greens to chug. However, I simply cannot see paying 300-400 dollars for a Vita-Mix or Blendtec right now.

What cheaper blenders would do the job? Preferably below $100?

I bought a new Vita-Mix a couple years ago, but for me, it was totally worth it because I'm always blending something, haha, and the Vita-Mix's last forever as well. They also blend so fast that you don't have to sharpen the blades. However, if I were just starting out and didn't know if I was going to stick with it, I'd opt for something under $100 as well, and a lot of people do just fine making smoothies with cheaper blenders. I used a vintage Vita-Mix when I first started, and it didn't blend all that great at all, LOL, but I still got great results! haha I don't know what to recommend to you, but I would check out of few of these links for recommendations: Best Blenders I really hope you'll give smoothies a try - check out the sorbet recipes mentioned on the previous page as well. Would love to know how it goes for you! :)

Well, I'm on an anti-candida diet and I keep reading tons of stuff that fat may be a culprit and an overall healthy lifestyle should help eliminate candida naturally - including eating fruits.

I figured I'd try some green smoothies with berries since they're low in sugar, first. If I can tolerate it, I'll try adding it more sugary fruits, like apples. Hopefully, I can tolerate fruit and will be able to eat bananas again!

I've always loved smoothies, but our blender broke and I just never got a new one.

There are so many theories on candida. One that I have heard to be true and verified by others who had the condition is that it's an immune disorder. If you give your body high-nutrient, immune boosting foods with lots of cruciferous vegetables, the candida problem should clear up. If anyone reading needs help with easily incorporating these foods into your diet, please send me a PM, and I will be happy to send you my handout. I have lots of easy, tasty recipes.

There is probably some truth in all theories. Until the condition is cleared, low-sugar fruits are probably the way to go, but if you're doing lots of blended greens and veggies, that should more than combat any fruit you ingest, so long as you're keeping your fruit intake to under 5-6 a day I would think.

As for fats, I have heard of the fat/candida theory. I don't know what I think of it, but for fats in general, my recommendation is to stick to fats already in foods. i.e. no processed fats, like olive oil... better to just eat the olive. Another example, I don't use oil in my salad dressings. I instead make dressings out of blended nuts, like cashews. That way I get the whole food instead of just processed oils that have virtually no nutrients but are high in calories. These dressings are delicious too. Dr. Joel Fuhrman is who I learned this from.

Just my speculations... I wish there was an easy answer! :)

Im gonna start with green smoothies in my diet today again, have been on the anti candida diet for awhile now so will be intresting if I can avoid to break out from thsese.

Starting with low sugar/GL stuffs like blackberries, blueberries and raspberries and also ofcourse lots of spinach and romaine lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, cucumbers and lemons. Im also adding some coconutoil and gonna try with some protein powder aswell.

If I start to break out I dump the protein powder first, and if that doesnt help Im dumping the fruits/berries and I guess if that doesnt help either Ihave to do veggie smoothies :(:P

Thanks Adam! We have Kenwood in the U.S., so maybe people can find a comparable version. :)

Jimpa,

I really hope it works out well for you!! Let us know!! Instead of the romaine lettuce, you might opt for a cruciferous green instead, like kale or collards. These will give you more nutrients. :)

Eddie,

Have you been using your blender every day for 6+ months? If so, then I think a Vita-Mix would be a great investment for you. :)

hesitation,

My mom puts lots of veggies and garlic in her smoothies, and I have to admit, they are pretty good!! haha

Hey Miss Fairy!,

I just wanted to congratulate you on the success of this thread and the ingenious idea behind it. I've been inspired and have been drinking green smoothies for about a week or two now.

I LOVE IT!

I usually have mixed berries, a little bit or apple and banana (whatever is available in the fridge) and LOTS of spinach.

The berries mask the colour and the fruits make it taste better.

I used to drink them with rice milk, but I use water now which tastes similar. I'm not putting high sugar fruits in there (Like alot of banana, red apples, grapes etcs....)

What other things would you recommend?

Brissyguy,

That is very kind of you, thank you! :) I'd love to take credit for the idea of green smoothies, but Victoria Boutenko is who came up with the ingenious idea!! Her book, "Green for Life" talks all about it. Her family was eating all raw, but their health was slowly declining. She realized that they weren't eating enough greens and came up with the brilliant idea at that time. Thank goodness for Victoria! :)

It sounds like you are doing great with your smoothies! I would be sure to do a combination of greens, like kale, collards, turnips greens, parsley, etc. I use a lot of apples, pears, bananas, and frozen pineapple, peaches, mango, berries, and tropical fruit mix. I could probably use a greater combination myself, but I like to keep it fairly simple though, and using packaged greens and frozen fruits is a huge help!

Eddie,

I've never made almond butter in mine. Let me know if you try it! :)

Wow thats very interesting, would like to see a link or something on that if you have? Would be super awesome to be able do eat fruits and do nice green smoothies again 😀

All you have to do is google "fat theory candida"

Here are some of the links that I first stumbled upon just researching candida:

The Fat Theory

Raw Food and Candida

It's just like anything - I've read people who struggled and had little results with BOTH methods of anti-candida dieting. I've been eating small amounts of fruit for the past three days on an empty stomach and have had no adverse reactions...yet.

I had a banana this morning - one of the most sugary fruits there is. I'll wait and see if my body reacts or not. I've actually noticed something odd. I had a lot of protein today in a 1/2 a chicken breast. After eating it, my stomach hasn't felt right. I felt fine after eating the fruit and my typical greens (which I have a growing addiction to spinach), but not the chicken. This is the largest portion of meat I've had in two weeks.

I'm thinking maybe a raw food diet is really what I should be pursuing with the help of green smoothies!

ABG fairy, I actually picked up a bunch of raw food books from the library and Victoria's "Green for Life" was one of them. I had no prior knowledge of her and now I see her name everywhere! I even picked up another book without looking at the author titled "12 steps to Raw Foods" which is also by her. Another happy accident. I've read 4 books in the past week and raw is so darn appealing and all books mention green smoothies.

If anyone cares, I'm picking up an Oster brand blender at Wal-mart tomorrow. They have really good ratings and while not as powerful as a vita-mix or blendtec, it's affordable and powerful enough to use regularly.

I'm going to make another stop to the library to see if they have any good books full of nothing but green smoothie recipes in hopes to find a low sugar one - just in case sugar fruits aggravate my body.

If all works out, I am TOTALLY trying that Chocolate Heaven recipe on the first page.

I picked up an 18 speed digital 700 watt Oster blender along with a bag of berry medley frozen fruit. It may not be a vita-mix, but man that thing is powerful. I blended about 3 handfuls of spinach, 2 cups of water and about 2 cups of the berries. It blended perfectly in about 5 minutes. I did add a splash of almond milk to the mix, just to lighten the color. My berry smoothie is now a deep shade of berry purple.

The blender cost me $44 at Wal-Mart and I'm sincerely hoping the fruits don't break me out because I've found a new addiction.

My mom even likes my concoction. She took one look at it and almost gagged, then I told her to try it and she was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. It's very tart and yummy! If I can go a week on this stuff without breaking out, I'm going to try that chocolately one with raspberries. :)
