Also~ I think in your first post you said something about eating a green-based soup as often as possible. I have a really good recipe for a soup made only out of broccoli.

Basically you take two large heads of broccoli (rinsed) and put them in a pot of water so that they are submerged. Add 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons salt. Cook until broccoli is slightly soft (you want it to maintain the green color and not turn brown--DON'T BOIL IT). Then, scoop half the broccoli out of the pot and into the blender, and add the broccoli water in a 1:3 ratio (like if you have 3 cups of broccoli, add 1 cup of the broccoli water). Blend for about a minute, and pour into bowl. Drizzel about 1 tsp of nice extra virgin olive oil on top, and you're ready to eat! (You may want to add more salt, depending on your taste).

Now, before I tried this soup, I would only eat broccoli if it was covered in cheese or drowned in some kind of cream sauce. But this soup is so simple, so tasty, and so good for you, you have to give it a chance. And the olive oil really gives it a little flavor kick. A nice little side to this soup is a crostini--personally i'd like little peices of crusty sourdough. Just cut up the bread, put a little olive oil, garlic, and/or parmesan cheese, and toast on high for 10-15 minutes in your oven. so tasty!

Do you absolutely have to make them with water? I made one last night with water and ice and it tasted really strange. This morning I used Vanilla soymilk, and no sugar this time because it was sweet enough. Is it still considered a healthy smoothie if I use vanilla soymilk?

Also, I've only been making these smoothies for 2 days and for those 2 days I have only used baby spinach because it's all I bought, now I read that it's bad to eat a lot of 1 leafy vegetable. I only drink 1 glass a day though.

Is it bad to MIX leafy vegetables? Would that be considered as eating too much of 1 type?

Today I'm going to Whole Foods to get some frozen fruit and more of a leafy variety :)

Could anyone recommend a leafy vegetable that is good to use that doesn't taste bad?

ameliabright,

You are very welcome, and I'm so glad you're excited about the smoothies!!! :) Thank you for sharing your broccoli recipe - it does sound very good!!! I'm with you on how making veggie soups can make it so easy/tasty to eat veggies!! That sourdough bread idea of yours sounds so yummy..... hehe

CottonCandi,

The main thing is to get in your blended greens and fruit for the day, so really, you can use whatever liquid you'd like. Soymilk is fine to use, but there's controversy about whether or not soy is healthy, so it's not something I use very often.

It's good to do a variety of greens but I don't think there'd be any harm in doing spinach for two days in a row. I usually do the same green all week long and then try to use a different green the next week. Using a mixture is fine as well. You just don't want to do spinach and only spinach for every green smoothie for the rest of your life. haha :)

I really like kale and collards - I use those all the time.

I'd only be using 1/2 cup soymilk for my smoothies (otherwise I don't really drink soy, I have it for cereal mostly, and I don't drink the left over milk), so I am not too concerned about the controversy around it.

Didn't I read on another page that kale is really nasty and strong?

1/2 cup of soymilk a day would be enough to concern me, but that's just me. Have you tried the unsweetened soymilk by Westsoy? That's the best soymilk I've come across - it's basically just soybeans and water I think. The unsweetened vanilla is great. When I do drink soy, these are what I buy.

I know a lot of people that really like kale a lot. It's worth giving it a try. :)

Cool, alright. I've seen the Westsoy brand, I will try it. I thought soy was only a cause for concern if you consumed a lot of it.

I went to Whole Foods today to check out their frozen fruit. $3.00-$4.00 for a TINY bag of fruit?! No way am I paying that! 🙁 I thought it would be way bigger bags. It looked like it would be 2-3 days worth of smoothie.

^ It can depend on the fruit as well - berries are expensive. I use more fresh fruit than frozen (bananas are really cheap), but frozen can be great for adding extra flavor, or if you run out of fresh fruit, and some frozen fruit, like mango, is just more convenient to buy frozen.... at least I think so! Any discount health food stores in your area? Whole Foods can be pretty pricey. Also, did you buy organic? Not all fruits needs to be bought organic. Here's a helpful list: http://www.foodnews.org/walletguide.php

Non organic was $3.00 for a tiny bag of fruit, $4.00 for a tiny bag of organic berries. These bags are really small :\ I can't afford it. Their frozen vegetables are reasonably priced with large quanity, why not their fruit  Unfairrr.

That sounds about right for a bag of berries. I still buy them - I just don't use a ton of them. I mainly use them to make desserts with. hehe :)

Just as a suggestion for a substitute for soy milk, dairy, and water in your green smoothies: COCONUT KEFIR!

I haven't been brave enough to make my own just yet, but I buy it from the grocery store.

It's dairy-free, has healthy probiotics, healthy fats and adds a bit of tartness and a creamy coconut flavor.

It is definitely a step up from plain old water!

That is an excellent idea!!! You can actually buy it at your store? That's so cool!! I've always thought it'd be great to make coconut kefir, but I've never have!! If only the coconuts were easier to open. I have to get out a hammer!! hahaha :)

This is kind of a weird question, but why was my smoothie bubbling this morning? XD

While it was blending there was a bunch of air bubbles for some reason, and once it stopped it was continuing to bubble, and some were big!

All I put was strawberry, banana, soy milk, and ice

I don't recall them BUBBLING before.

I'm using green smoothies, but i just recently found that fruit may be causing my acne as i might have a candida problem. So i have used almond milk to sweeten my smoothies rather than fruit. Just thought i would say this for any people who can't eat fruit like me. It doesn't taste that great, but it doesn't matter to me as long as it is making me healthy, that in itself makes it taste a little better.

CottonCandi,

Mine foam sometimes, but I don't think I've encountered the bubbles! Has it happened again?

bennyb,

I agree that the health benefits are more important than the taste. :) I hope you'll be able to soon eat fruit again. There is such controversy about candida. Some say it's due to a poor functioning immune system (which many are able to improve with high-nutrient foods) and not so much from naturally sweet foods like fruit. Whatever the case, I hope the smoothies bring you improved health. :)

Hey again!

Just some updates, haha. First of all, my parents want me to cut down the amount of green smoothies I drink to only 6 days a week ( I used to drink it everyday ). I hope this won't change anything though, as I see in your signature, ABG Fairy, that you drink them 6 days a week as well. So I'm not drinking it today... but I really want to! Haha, I'm craving it so much right now  Okay, now for some update on my skin .. it's going pretty good actually! I think the mix of green smoothies and retin-a cream is helping alot! :)

Rosette,

Good to hear from you! :) I'm really glad that your skin is still doing well!! I drink them at least 6 days a week, but I usually do 7. I hate for you to not be able to do 7 days though, especially if you're really enjoying them and not just doing them for your skin. (I admit that I don't always feel like making a smoothie and sometimes have to make myself!! haha). However, I definitely think 6 days a week is enough. If your parent think you're getting "too much," they should know that you really can't overdose on plant foods, especially when eating them in whole form. A lot of people drink daily vegetable juices, and those are "much" more concentrated in nutrients than blended smoothies. Thanks for the update!!! :)

I really do not want to continue only drinking them 6 days a week because when I did that a couple days ago, the next day I had got a new breakout. I don't know if it's because I didn't drink a cup of green smoothies that night...but now "my new friend" is really bothering me

I will for sure have a cup of green smoothie tonight ... hopefully it will help! By the way, do those people make the vegetable juices or buy them?

Darn. :( Maybe the day before your "off" day you could make two days worth, hide it in the fridge, and sneak it out the next day.... or drink it late that evening. :) If it were me, I would definitely feel rebellious against someone telling me to not do something that I knew was healthy and something I needed. Maybe you could try explaining to your parents?

I think the people that do vegetable juices either buy them freshly juiced (not pasteurized or bottled) at juice bars (often found in health food stores) or juice them at home themselves.

So ABG Fairy is it ok to maybe add some rice protein to my green smoothie of 1 apple, a handful of kale, 4-5 baby carrots, and 1/2 cup of blueberries??? I am trying to weight train and consume a certian amount of protein. I chose rice protein because its concentrated brown rice and it doesn't contain dairy like whey or casein protein. Just don't want to throw in rice protein to the green smoothie if its going to counter its effect.

^ That would absolutely be just fine, and good choice with the rice protein! The blended greens don't need to be eaten alone or with fruit only (unless you have problems digesting, in which case, it's better to just do the greens and fruit) - the main thing is that you get your blended greens in for the day. Sounds like a good smoothie recipe! Enjoy! :)

Good plan! And yeah, i totally feel rebellious towards it. but I explained to my parents and they said its up to me 🙂

I will look into vegetable juices! Thank you!

Yea!!! That is wonderful news Rosette! I am very happy to hear that your parents are leaving the decision up to you. :) If you're wanting info on juicing and juicers, this is a good source: http://www.discountjuicers.com/ .

Because it's way cheaper if you think about it, and because of time, I take Perfect Food. Do you think this is good enough as raw veggie smoothies?
