Hello,

I will finally get a blendtec total bleder for Christmas.

So now I'm starting to look for green smoothies recipes. Do you know of any good books, internet pages, etc. regarding recipes?

Thanks for helping!

healthy,

I'm excited for you, that's great!! :)Green for Life, by Victoria Boutenko (www.rawfamily.com), is a book all about green smoothies. I'm not so crazy about the recipes in there though. If you stick with the basic recipe on the front page of my post by starting out with an apple, pear or banana, and then just mix up different frozen fruits/berries, you can make all kinds of different delicious smoothies... so many varieties with the veggie green smoothies too. When I make a veggie smoothie, I always add lemon and usually parsley or cilantro. If you want actual recipes though, I don't know of a particular site, but you should be able to find a lot by doing a google search. Good luck, and Merry Christmas!! :)

Okay so I plan on getting a juicer/blender as soon as possible, but sort of strapped for cash at the moment. Could you guys point me in the direction of a cheap blender, that can get the job done? Do you think wal-mart or costco would have good ones?

^ I just did a quick glance over the blenders at Walmart.com, http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do...ab_value=58_All , and my eye caught the Osterizer 14-Speed Blender, 6694-015, because it's cheap, has good reviews and says it's good at crushing ice. At such a low cost, I'd think you'd have nothing to lose with that one! A lot of people start out with these types of blenders and do just fine. You might just have to blend a little longer in order to finely blend your greens. Good luck! :)

I personally used a $15 blender from Walmart for all my smoothies, and the results were great.

MROTH720,

That is an excellent question and one that many have asked. When it comes to nutritional science questions, I trust Dr. Joel Fuhrman (who I discuss in my first post). The following is what he has to say regarding hypothyroidism and cruciferous vegetables:

Please forget about the idea that raw cruciferous vegetables are goiteragenic. That does not happen in real life with real people and I assure you that the amount of raw greens you can eat will not hurt your thyroid.

Source:

I think the theories linking cruciferous veggies to hypothyroidism are based upon bad science. Cruciferous veggies are the most healthful foods you can eat! :)

So I've been dong these for a couple of days now. I'm just wondering, is it normal to have more "liquidy" bowl movements? I swear, it looks the same coming out as it does going in.

Alika,

That's not normal! However, many in the past have stated the same when they were first starting, so it may just be that your body is adjusting. I would suggest adding more starchy veggies/whole grains and some nuts/seeds to your diet to help counteract. Hang in there! :)

Calendula,

Dr. Oz is great. He and Dr. Fuhrman were roommates in college! While he has a lot of smart advice, I still think Dr. Fuhrman is more cutting edge. :)

Hey guys, I found an amazing alternative to making your own smoothies.

BOLTHOUSE FARMS GREEN GOODNESS!

It's delicious! And you (well, I) can buy it at Walmart, or your local supermarket if they have it.

It's made of all natural ingredients and has all this stuff in it:

Apple Juice from concentrate (water, apple juice concentrate,) Pineapple Juice from concentrate (water, pineapple juice concentrate,) Mango Puree from concentrate (water, mango puree concentrate,) Banana Puree, Kiwi Juice, Natural Flavor, Spirulina, Open Cell Chlorella, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid,) Lime Juice, Zinc Sulfate, Broccoli, Green Tea, Spinach, Barley Grass, Wheat Grass, Blue Green Algae, Echinacea Purpurea Extract, Odorless Garlic, Tamarind Puree, Dragon Fruit Juice, Lemon Bioflavanoids, Jerusalem Artichoke and Nova Scotia Dulce.

It has crazy stuff like grass, broccoli, spinach, and algae and stuff!

But the awesome part is that IT DOES NOT TASTE LIKE GRASS, or anything vegetable. It tastes exactly like kiwi and pineapple mostly. There isn't even a HINT of grassy taste. They did an excellent job of hiding all the green stuff.

This stuff tastes amazing and it's very good for you, go try it out!

Hi, i've been making these green smoothies for the past few days and I'm loving every bit of it. I'm very thankful to have found this thread through searching through google. I have a few questions about making these green smoothies. Is it okay to de-stem the vegetables? Am i missing out on a lot of the nutrients by doing that?

My current green smoothie consist of blueberries, carrots, kale, green chard, a splash of orange juice, and lots of water. Is this sufficient enough to see results? I hope it's potent enough to clear my skin. THanks!

CottonCandi,

Thanks for telling us all about the drink! It does sound really great. Unfortunately, it's going to be pasteurized, and so you're not going to get near the amount of nutrition that you would from a freshly made smoothie. :( I'm sure this would be a nice alternative though if a fresh smoothie wasn't available to you. :)

Quasimoto,

Your smoothie sounds GREAT!! :) Be sure to mix up too with different fruits and greens so you get a variety. I find the stems much too fibrous, and I think I've read before that there is a lot more nutrition in the leaves anyway. As long as you're getting a good amount of leafy greens everyday (at least 1 1/2 cups fairly packed), you should be just fine. If your acne is severe, I would aim for at least 3 cups of greens a day in your smoothie.

What does pasteurized mean exactly? They basically just blend fruit and stuff in a blender and bottle it.

I was surprised to not see watermelons mentioned at all at the start of this topic, because as well as adding a lot more liquid to the smoothie, they really improve the taste. Is there any concern I should have with using them? So far, though, the only way I've found to get my smoothies to taste good is with a bit of honey, so I'm open to other ideas for what I could add.

Pasteurization is a process of heating food to kill microbes, which increases shelf life. Nearly all commercial fruit juice products are pasteurized.

Fresh produce has shown to lose many of its nutrients after several days of being picked and transported to a store. Commercial smoothie products would lose even more nutrients simply due to their nature.

On the bottle it says "Flash pasteurized and cold-filled for quality", waaa.

I would like to try the fruit smoothies out, as I've tried almost every tropical product and I'm throughly sick of it. I wondering, how much does it cost to drink green smoothies or similar smoothies, every day. This seems like a very expensive regimen. Please share the cost.

Well let's see.

1 serving frozen berries: $1.00

1 serving frozen broccoli: $0.35

1 serving frozen spinach: $0.40

1 banana: $0.30

1 other piece of fruit: $0.30 - $1.00

Other miscallenous ingredients: $0.25

This equals about $3.00, and the above recipe would make about 4 large cups of smoothie. It's not the cheapest daily habit imaginable, but if you cut out the junk food/Starbucks from your diet, it's not even a sacrifice.

Hi ABG Fairy,

I had the acne problem from last 14 years. Just 2 weeks back i saw the Jack La Lene juicer ad and got highly motivated to get a juicer.

Today i have completed exactly 14 days of juicing green vegetables and the effects are clearly visible, i had white / red / pink all kind of acnes and pimples.... its all 70% cleared!!!

Am so happy about this.. that i would recommend every one to try this...

Infact i have followed exactly the same thing what you have described in your first post (but i read your post today).. it is highly effective

But instead of blending, i use a jucier... i sacrifice the fiber.... but i drink about 2-4 glasses of vegeable juice during the morning and at night as well...

i use all the green leafy vegetables along with ginger and lemon. I use carrot and beet as the sweetner.

it does tastes great... not only i have got the benefit in acne but i feel more energetic... just in 14 days.. have planned to continue for another 2 months!!!

All the best to every one!!!

Juicer OR Blender : According to the results that i have obtained from the juicer - i will not say that juicer is not beneficial. It simply work. Get a clear face (without any red blemishes or bumps after 14 years - is a great feeling altogather)

Now the only remedy i am looking for is for the scars.. i have about 20 scars (although small) on my face.. which i need to clear.. any advice on that will be appreciated!!

I heard cucumbers are good for your skin. I'm planning to add them into my smoothies for this week. Is it okay to take the skin off and the seeds out? Am i losing all the nutrients by doing that?

Smoothie for the week includes a small handful of:

Red Chard

Spinach

Cucumbers

Carrots

Blueberries

Splash of OJ

Water

CottonCandi,

I know. :( Wouldn't it be great if we could buy those drinks fresh?! :)

NoMiRRoRs,

Rakbs gave you a good estimate. Mine probably range from $1-3 each... maybe less. Sometimes I guy greens that are on sale. I usually opt for whichever apples or fruits are on sale, and bananas are really cheap and don't need to be organic. I've never really given much thought to the cost though, because to me, the smoothies are non-negotiable in my life, which makes the cost irrelevant.... they're like my daily vitamin. :)

River Side,

Congratulations on your great results!! :) I remember how excited I was to discover that green smoothies would keep my skin clear! About juicing... except for the loss of fiber, juicing is superior to blended foods, because it's more concentrated with nutrients. However, if your digestion is not regular, it's very important to get enough fiber in your diet - *especially* for those with acne, in which case, the blended smoothies would be great. They are both helpful, and for those that are willing to do it, having a glass of juice everyday in addition to the smoothies is a great idea. :)

For your scars, salicylic acid (beta hydoxy acid) and Retin-A are both helpful. There are also certain oils, like rose hip oil (though it can promote acne), and essential oils that help as well. You might also want to browse the forum on scar treatments: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/Scar-treatments-f7.html

Quasimoto,

That sounds like a great smoothie, and it's fine to leave the seeds, but if it's not an organic cucumber, or if it's "waxed," then definitely remove the skin! Otherwise, leave the skin on, as it does contain good nutrition. :) You can read more about them here: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=f...dbid=42#summary

another guy with similar experience as me =D yeah took me arnd 2 weeks too. but slightly less to see reduction in inflammation. after taking green smoothie for 9 months or so daily. it seems to have long term effects. even though i have lowered frequency to 2 days a week, i dont get more den 5 pimples on my face, as compared to the 20-30 i get b4 trying green smoothie. and even more surprising, now i jst use tap water to clean my face and there is no diff from using those expensive facial products.

^^
