i love raw pecans, walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts. add them to my homemade yogurt. nothing taste better! i add walnuts to my green smoothie. im not sure if it breaks me out though, b'cause the green smoothie sorta keeps my skin at bay. with several stubborn ones which doesnt bother me much =D

i take approx. 150g almonds, 100g pecans, 100g hazelnuts, 200g walnuts in a week's time. i would say thats pretty much.

EddieE,

I eat mostly cashews, almonds, walnuts and sunflower seeds. If you eat more than an ounce or two a day, they could be making you break out, so you might want to just try limiting how many you eat in a day. :)

EddieE,

An ounce (by weight) of nuts is about 1/4 cup, or 2 Tbs of a nut butter. If you don't notice problems with cashews, then I think it's fine to eat more. Brazil nuts are great and have a lot of selenium, which is great for skin (only one a day is more than enough to get your selenium though)! Also, make sure all the nuts/seeds you eat are raw!!

How long do these smoothies last for if stored in the fridge?

I stored mine the day b4 yesterday and there's a darker layer on top.

Mars2008,

They'll keep for up to 48 hrs, but I always drink mine within 24 hrs. Yours should be just fine to drink - just stir it up. :)

about how many 8 oz cups of the green smoothie should you drink a day? i saw on the the introduction post that you should consume 6-8 cups a day but that sounds like a lot liquid intake if you want to combine it with your daily 6-8 cups of water a day.

these have stopped working for me, now I am angry. I do 5 cups of these every day mostly with cruciferous vegetables. ABG fairy how long did it take for you to stop getting new acne while doing these smoothies? I think its my second or third week or something.

:(

what'sgood,

The main thing in the beginning to is to get 2 large handfuls a day of greens - don't worry about how many cups you're drinking. I drank a smoothie today containing 2 very large handfuls of spinach, but volume wise, it was only about 2-3 cups. It was 2 large handfuls of spinach, 1 banana, 1 tbs honey and 2 tbs cocoa powder - seriously tasted like chocolate milk. :)

Dyl,

Sorry you're feeling discouraged, but you're still a green smoothie newbie, so it's too soon to tell. :) It took a little over 4 weeks before I noticed I wasn't getting new bumps. For some though, it could take up to 12 weeks, depending on your level of health when you started. How many handfuls of greens are you doing a day? Are you shooting for at least 2 large handfuls?

i see so it's all right to have about 2 cups a day? i was thinking maybe one for the morning and one before or after workouts.

have you ever tried adding brewed tea or cranberry juice to your smoothies? they might not give you any flavor boosts or anything (actually to think of it they would probably make the smoothie not as tasteful with the cranberry juice being very tart/bitter and tea is bland), but both contain beneficial ingredients to your health.

i heard that thers no real relationship between diet and acne.

some personal thought here..

severe acne is definitely something to do with the genetic inheritance. but i feel that it's because of the 'acne genes' that makes our body unable to function maximally, resulting in deficiencies etc, which ultimately caused skin breakouts. A diet rich in greens and fruits can actually help alleviate such deficiency thus helping to prevent symptoms of acne. as of permanent cure [stop the inheritance of the 'acne gene' down the family tree] a parent having a nutritional diet will not be of any help to his\her offspring. it's a controversy but scientists are starting to accept the theory that diet do affect the extent of acne problems.

i personally have a first hand experience to the wonders of greens on inherited severe acne - 20-30 over counts [approx since it's painstaking to count all of them!] for two years plus and without the help of any topical application or supplementation, it was drastically reduced to less then 10 within 3 weeks of strict adherance to 2 handful of greens a day. my dad had it for more den 5 years and so did my grandpa. sadly i am still having like 3-5 pimples on my face which shows that the genes is still having an effect on me but the greens is actually suppressing it.

cheers to the wonders of nature

Question, is it possibly bad to blend every veggie/leafy green I have in the fridge? I blended broccoli, kale, collard greens, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, a cucumber, and an apple. Might this be unwise? Should I cut back on the different amount of veggies put and vary what I blend each day instead? Also, is it bad to blend broccoli along with everything else, since it's not a leafy green? I heard that broccoli should not be eaten with fruit, so I don't know.

I love green smoothies, once you get the hang of making them you'll crave them all the time. I have 2 huge green smoothies a day. Greens I use in my smoothies consist of spinach, romaine lettuce, kale, celery and I usually buy a container of mixed organic baby greens, that way, I'm sure I'm getting a good variety. I always buy organic leafy greens.

I usually start by filling my blender to the top with whatever greens I have, then I add 2 cups of filtered water. I grind the greens down and then start adding my fruit. I always have banana's in mine, I usually throw like 7 in and add berries, apples, mango's and whatever is on hand. It usually makes around 1.5L-2L. The taste of greens is non existant, especially if the banana's are super ripe.

The best green smoothie I ever had was, 5 mangoes, 2 apples, tons of spinach, 2 cups of water, and a few stalks of celery. The only problem with mangoes is they take for ever to peel. It took me awhile to get it down, but I'm so glad I found out about them from Sepsi and his book Clear for Life. I don't like munching through a big salad because there time consuming to make, and they take to long to eat. This is the best way to get leafy greens into your diet, hands down.

Yeah, grab a couple handfuls, dependening on how many fruits you are using. I basically fill my blender to the top with any green I have, but thats because I always use lots of bananas which kill the taste of the bitter greens. It's best to experiment, my first few green smoothies were nasty. It's simple if it tastes like the green you used then add more fruit. I like to use spinach because it's easy to cover up the taste.

I'd still like to know if veggies that arent leafy greens, like broccoli and carrots, are okay to blend in with the rest.

I don't see how organic spring mix could be bad. Like I said I throw whatever greens I have in. So sometimes I have romaine and spinach or spinach and mixed baby greens, all different variations. For me it doesn't matter the combination, as long as it taste like fruit.

I usually don't throw carrots, or broccoli in. I just use leafy greens and celery.

I use celery a lot in my smoothies. It is best if you have a high powered blender because then you can put anything into it! I think broccoli and cauliflower would be fine though, seeing how celery can be blended. Ooh, but my blender isn't strong enough to blend carrots, I juice them in my juicer and just add the carrot juice and not the entire carrots because they make it a werid lumpy consistency/not smooth at all. Although, I guess if you want to have your smoothies kind of lumpy/gritty you could add carrots. Experiment for yourself! My favorite blend is

1/2 Banana

7 strawberries

1 cup bluberries

2 handfulls spinach

1 handfull other greens (mixed, bok choi, romaine, celery, etc...)

2 cups orange juice or water, depending on how sweet I want it to be

so good!!! (it makes about 6 or seven cups though, so it can last for the entire day)

good luck!
