I made my first green smoothies today...they came out black, were really watery, and tasted like water! Haha

But I feel better, and my skin is kind of glowing! So hopefully despite the lackluster first attempt, I still received nutrition.

I added a handful of romaine lettuce and spinach, and some frozen blueberries. Maybe not enough, because the smoothie was kind of flavorless. Also, is there anything you can do to make the smoothies a bit thicker?

Chia seeds or psyllium husk will add a nice texture...I'm drawing a blank for thickness...coconut milk or cashew milk? =/

The mighty banana!! For me 1 or 2 (organic, Fair Trade) bananas is the base of every smoothie. Then a couple of handfuls of greens, and more fruit. Bluberries are awesome, esp. w banana. Banana Banana Banana. I had a friend who used to call me banana, cos I ate so many of them.

The meat of young coconuts (NOT the dry, brown, hairy kind) makes things thicker.

You want to load up on the fruit to make it taste great and become thick to your liking. I enjoy a thin smoothie, so I add quite a lot of water to mine. Generally I think a good smoothie starts with lots of fruit blended really thick, then add in the greens w a bit of water, blend until smooth, and then add more water until desired consistency. Note: some less powerful blenders needs liquid to blend the fruit in the first place, but just experiment and you'll find a way that suits your blender.

I've been battling my moderate acne for over a year now. Dan's regimen definitely helped prevent breakouts, but left my face feeling dehydrated, and very red. I'd almost rather have a few breakouts and normal toned skin, then what I had. So, I decided to change it up a bit and go natural.

I've been off BP for a week, and I'm breaking out slightly, but not red anymore.

I made my first green smoothie this morning. One word. Delicious, and it was completely unexpected. I went with a very simple one to start with, baby spinach and banana. It looked like the most disgusting thing I've ever seen, but decided to try it anyways. Delicious. I cannot wait to make another one later today, and tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I'm hoping this is the key to my clear skin.

You asked about coconut, and while I'm on the fence about coconut oil (and lean more towards saying one should avoid it)

What makes you think this? Coconut oil is one of the healthiest foods with the most benefits of probably any food out there. It beats back candida and bad bacteria, it helps the immune system, it absorbs very quickly for fast energy--it's a superfood.

I forgot one thing; when i used 2handful of greens in smoothie, my face turned darken for some period..

Whenever i took heat producing herbs such as turmeric, ginger, garlic ,.. i got new spots in next few days..

When i took EVOO 1 tbs per day, i got really oily and inflammed spots..

Have you ever done a liver flush? I get the feeling it would help you a lot.

I've just bought some chard and my mom said that "chard isn't good for acne."

I asked her how but she said she doesn't really now how to explain it. I don't see how its not good for acne since it is a leafy green after all.

Yeah that's total BS, chard is a wonderful green, very rich in magnesium and healthy.

Avocado! All my smoothies have avocado. Or a banana/coconut oil combo.

If your ingredients are cold, you'll have little bits of solid coconut oil. Which will probably happen whether or not you heat it. And it depends on whether or not that bothers you.

Apples, coconut, pears, bananas.

You may want to stay away from citrus fruits, strawberries, and kiwis for awhile, which have been known to give people troubles. Then reintroduce them and note any changes. Personally, bananas used to make my throat itch but I haven't retried them in awhile. Just had a ton of tangerines the other day (they had chemicals all over them too, I saw on the package after buying them. alas I ate them anyway) with no reaction, bodily or skin-related. Play around with it. An old man in a chinese herb shop told me to stay away from poultry, asparagus, mango, and pineapple when I asked him for advice on acne. The mango and pineapple made sense since it's high GI (they have lots of good stuff too) but I have no idea with the others.

Also I'm sure it's fine to consume any high gi fruits you like as long as you're lowering the glycemic load with other ingredients. That's what counts.

just the other day i had an apple, pear, spinach smoothie..so im on the right track!

i never noticed having trouble with any fruit though. like i've never experienced itchy throat, migraines, hives, or stomach problems whenever i eat fruit or any food, in general. i'll just pay better attention next time i eat fruits and see if i notice anything weird.

you said stay away from citrus..does that mean lemons too?? cause the past few months i've been adding the juice from a lemon into my water and it's my new favorite thing to drink!

Nah, you should be fine. A lil lemon juice is good for you, all citrus fruits are. But people here have reported problems with them, so I was just passing the word along. Don't mind me~

I've been drinking a green smoothie a day for the last two weeks, I've also started antibiotics and a new topical. I'm seeing results, but, not sure from what!! Either way, I have way more energy, and overall feel a lot better.

I drink a green smoothie every morning. It is such a wonderfully energizing way to start your day.

My recipe is usually some slight variation on this:

About 2 cups packed leafy greens (usually kale and spinach)

1/2 banana

about 1 C frozen blueberries

some water or hemp milk (yum!)

GINGER (fresh root) -- this is a huge one ! It adds a kick and it is SO good for you.

Perhaps some lemon juice

Spirulina

Flax seed

I suggest this. I really love my smoothie - some people may be put off by the green taste, so if that's not your cuppa, try adding some agave/ raw honey/ another light sweetener.

Yum!

I'm pretty simple. Spinach and banana, and add a bit of coconut milk or almond milk to make it creamy. :)

Spinach, kale, cucumber, banana, some rasberries, and just a little bit of oats for texture, and water obviously. As the weeks go by, I'm removing more fruit, and adding more greens as I get used to the taste.

I can't say for sure, it's def not hurting it. I started oral antiobiotics and a topical the same week I started doing this. So, maybe it is, maybe it isn't, either way, I feel alot healthier, more energy, etc.

Granny smith apple, ginger, cabbage and green tea. Kiwi and whatever greens to make a pretty green drink. Berries and whatever greens and hibuscus tea for a pretty red drink.

sometimes with flax seed, coconut oil, etc.

You have seen the 100 or so page green smoothie thread, right?

With the green tea, is that in a powder form or like loose tea?

A couple of great recipes on Youtube, I think I am going to try.

Kefir, peanut (or almond) butter, a banana, vanilla whey, and honey. Maybe add some berries if I feel like it. The ultimate weight gainer shake!
