dannalue - When in the Air Force, did they have a dermatologist available for you?

I've always wondered if young men and women in the service could get

medical treatment for acne. Just curious.

Well, I entered in 97' and just got out in 03', so not too long ago.

Yes, they have free medical care and free prescrips for active duty/family members, but you have to be seeing a doctor that knows what he/she is doing. Most of the docs/PAs are only general practice types. They know a little bit about most things, but don't have any real depth in treating anything serious or chronic, like acne. If you bug them enough, you can get a referral to see a dermatologist (in my case, an Army doc down the road at the Army base) but it usually takes awhile. I saw the Army guy who literally sat w/me for about five minutes, half-listening to me, till he threw a prescription for Retin-A Micro at me (even when I just got done telling him that the two previous times I was on it, it did nothing!)

It's free medical care, but you get what you "pay" for. I'm a dependent now, so when we get to our new base, my husband and I already decided that we're just going to go off base to a civilian derm, even if the AF won't pay for it. My face isn't horrible like it was when I first joined (a combined attack from stress and extreme humidity) but I want to see about getting Smoothbeam treatments to correct acne scars from the bouts of Retin-A treatment.

"Nobody likes you, everybody laughs at you in the hallways and cracks jokes when you walk by" ... Yes, somebody actually said this to my face

"Damn, what happened to you? Looks like you need to go on some acne treatment"

"Are you taking steroids? Your face is so f****d up" ... Classic

what hits me the worst is when my mom or family members say something (and this goes for anything be it weight, clothing, etc)

"wow, your face looks really bad" or "what happened to your face?"

No one has ever said anything with the intent of hurting me, but my stepdad used to tease me back when I only got a couple zits and used clearasil on them, he'd laugh at the clearasil on my face. My dad just recently asked me "So still going to the dermatologist? How's that working out for you?" and it made me feel like "obviously not very well if you had to bring it up >.>" I know I tease myself over it more than anyone else does, though.

I hate reading all these things... it makes me wonder how some people survive in this world by being so blatantly rude and ignorant. They'll get what they deserve, I guess. I could never make fun of another person's appearance and I wonder what kind of person enjoys doing that. It's sad.

I've gotten my fair share of comments and they still bother me but those same kids that made fun of me went through the same thing.

Thats probably the worst thing iv'e ever heard anyone say, ever. Whoever said that mate is plain nasty and think if he/she is such a prick to say that, then chances are they are going to be like that to many people when things don't go that persons way. Point being, i'd bet that person is going to have major difficulties having decent friendships, relationships out of school. Probably recieves similar treatment him/herself at home.

Keep working on your skin, keep your chin up and be a good person. You'll go alot further then those spiteful people.

honestly i don't have that problem. First off someone tryed that crap with me in 9th grade, i was new. HE said something like " yo nigga, ya face is fucked up". So i snickered alittle bit and then just stodd there. He said something like " what the fuck is ya problem man, ya stupid?" then he turned around and started laughing with his friends( 2 of em , short little punks). well the second he turned around i kick him into his locker , grabed his backpack and pulled him to the floor , were I kicked the shit out of him! look the point is that I over reacted! IM shure that sooner or later someone would have beat his ass oneday but for me thats not enough, id rather make shure that he got the message loud and clear and to make shure that i was the one to teach it to him.

but the fact is that 0you can't bother yourself with hwat people say. oh yea and Eldamus... man im not to shure about what you just said. If someone just said that shit to me his ass would be on the ground. But if your not shure if you can beat that person, then just tell him that you are hung like a horse and that he can get a spoon and eat your ass! come one man, it doesn't even have to be true! just make some shit up!

Oh yea and the worse thing that someone has ever said to me about my acne was "your acne makes you look so hot! make sweet love to me?"

bad part: it was Dick Cheny.........

(crying) im go lay down.......(crying)

OMG you people have it bad!! I guess my acne isnt that bad =P

In 6th-7th Grade some kid told me to use tootpaste (omg -.-;;), some guy called me pimple boy, some people told me that I should stop jacking off, some guy told me to use stuff for my pimples, ...

ARGG.. my mom goes and tell her friends about my acne (as if they couldnt see... and then one of them bought this blemish control for me and this other one said I should get clearasil... WHY IS EVERYONE RECOMMENDING CLEARASIL?????????? that her kids use it and I should NOT pick my pimples or i would end up with scars like her (minor)..

I've also had little kids ask me what's wrong with my face (i had dark scars then) and then I was on the bus on my way to school and theres this moron making fun of everyone.. and when it got to me he asked "What's wrong with your face?" everyone started laughing and he asked if i jacked off or something.. -.-;;

This year....... I'm so happy.. Back then i was like the only one ( but now its like .. everyone has pimples.. nobody talks about me no moz!!! im sooo happy.. and my pimples have faded SOOOOO MUCH!!! Right now I have FADING scars!! =)

I'm sorry you guys have to go through so much =(

People at school always tell me I wear too much make-up, I get called a slut and stuff, but then the days I come in wearing hardly any, everyone's like "Eww, what's wrong with your face? Don't you wash?" So I can't win really.

Don't worry guys. More than half of these assholes in high school will probably go on to do nothing with their lives. There was this kid I knew in high school that used to pick on everybody, thought he was really cool, the whole deal. During school, he used to bag for different food stores. I saw him about 2 months ago still packing bagging for people in A&P.

Wow you guys have encountered a huge amount of pricks who would make fun of something like that.

In highschool, acne is common whether it's a handful of pimples on someone's cheek to severe acne (I know two people currently on Accutane)

The only time I've ever really been told something mean about my acne was by a 5 year old boy at my brother's birthday.

"Your cheek has pimples!"

To which I replied:

"You just wait until puberty where you'll get pimples, have your hair fall out, and temporarily grow a furry tail."

He gasped and ran off to his mom.

Fight the world with humor, I say. Having someone make fun of your acne is like having someone make fun of a girl having her period.

(when I explained a classmate about why my face looks a little crappy some mondays on MSN messenger, and the girl I was in love with was also on the conversation)

coversation was something like this

Me - "I can't meet up on satursday with you, unless I cancel my facial ... u know doug ... for my skin and acne .. that's why I look like shit some mondays'

Guy - "man, don't say the word facial in public ... it sounds a little girly, u know"

Girl - "now that explains why you look so good these days ... but still .. don't say 'facial'"

Guy!! - "I don't have that because I don't eat grease, and I wash my face"

Me "Ok, I'll cancel the treatment, I'll meet you up, later"

Guy and girl : bye

That comment pissed me off a lot, Icouldnt' believe he said that.

Another one by my enemy a yr ago: "damn, man ... that thing is gonna grow a hear and start talking "(pointed a huge 15mm nodule) ... I said ... 'yeah ... my topographic face runs a little wild these days' and laughed ... to show that i didn't care and avoid being bullied of acne.

I've had acne for 18 years, so I can't even remember all the comments at this point... there was the usual face washing, have you tried proactiv, seen a derm, etc, etc.

Most recently, a six year old asked me what all the "holes" on my face were.

Oh, but the best was probably the first day of junior high in homeroom--The teacher was calling us up to her desk one by one to give us our textbooks and when it was my turn she says to the whole class "Juliette's mother is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my entire life." Then she peers very closely at me (this was probably during my worst point with acne) and says in a disappointed tone, "I guess you look a little bit like her."

Well, I look exactly like my mother, right down to our toes, (except my mother has good skin) so it wasn't hard to figure out why my teacher didn't think I was "beautiful."

A little kid at the supermarket: "hey mum, why is that mans face all bubbly?"

When I was in school, at a P,E lesson: " I'm NOT getting in the same swimming pool as him!" (infront of the whole class and teacher

The teacher let him sit out of the lesson.
