Ground Flaxseed for Omega-3

I use a coffee grinder to grind flaxseeds and put a spoon of flaxseed meal in my breakfast everyday. It's easier to digest than whole flaxseeds and it's high in omega-3 which counterbalances any omega-6 I might have in my diet (chips, fast food, meat, nuts, baked goods). Omega-3 is anti-inflammatory while omega-6 encourages sebum production.

I've been combining this diet change with zinc supplements and my skin has never been better. I haven't had any new breakouts in two months when I used to battle something new coming up every week or two.

For hormonal acne (Organic Ground Flaxseed)
My daily dosage: 3 tablespoons of Organic Ground Flaxseed. I struggled with severe depression and anxiety for 10 years. As you may know, having acne only made me feel worse. I took the pill and spironolactone and even though I had clear skin I wasn't happy. I knew I had hormone problems and recently I discovered I suffer from PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) hence these terrible symptoms. I found out on the internet that Flaxseed mimics estrogens. After two months, my skin was great (didn't have break outs) and the best of all: I haven't been depressed. (I don't know if I have low or high estrogens, but it works on my imbalance). Also, I include a free dairy/coffee diet, lots of water, Spearmint tea, exercise and a facial routine. I don't know if it's good for all women but I definitely recommend it. In the case of men, I've heard that maca works better.

Pros:

*Permenantly reduced pore size
*Refined skin texture
*Reduces oil production.
*Cheap & Readily Available

Cons:

*May break you out if you take over RDA
*Will make eczema worst
*Will not work alone - must have a good skin regimen

I took a chance on this as I didn't want to go on any crazy overdose of other vitamins/minerals and was looking for something simple and cheap. The RDA for the (Holland & Barrett UK) cold pressed raw oil I had was 5ml twice daily. Advantages of taking the raw oil form is you can control how much you take. I estimated 10ml seemed a little too much for me (I'm only 5 foot 1 female) and from a little googling the level of phytoestrogen is the highest available in any foods (the second was tofu/soya bean). I took a small tea-spoon (not table-spoon), after dinner each night. The first 2 days my skin seemed more moisturised and my pores seemed to become smaller. After that it started to make my mild eczema worst (under my lips and chin, nose). I took this for a month and had to stop. My acne seemed to get just a little worst, but I was expecting this. So, I thought that was that, doesn't work for me and left it... Four months later after stopping, I have noticed after each monthly menstral cycle, my skin gets less and less acne, my pores have become more smaller, and overall my skin is alot better. The acne also takes less time to heal. Regimen: 1)Exfoliate with my old towel (its 6 years old & balanced to my skin and isn't hard or too rough), hot water, gently wipe dead skin, old blemishes. 2)Johnson & Johnson Gently Daily Scrub - wash off 3) Quinoderm Anti-Bacterial Facewash - only use a small penny size amount - this is great stuff and has reduced the severity of my acne too. Do Not Wash off Quinoderm - leave on 4)Neutrogena Visibly Clear 2 in 1 Wash/Mask - only on nose and cheeks - leave on. Do not use on eczema patches, will make it worst. Morning - brush teeth then wash off Night - have shower then wash off 5)BodyShop Aloe Vera Toner & Vitamin E Spray on cotton pad around face 6)BodyShop Vitamin E Moisturiser - only a little 7)Salcura Intensive Eczema Spray on eczema 8

Pros:

* Find practically anywhere
* Economical
* Omega 3 benefits

Cons:

* Must be converted into usable form by body
* Can cause acne/make it worse

Flax oil components must be assimilated by the body into Omegas which means the actual amount you receive is much lower than say, fish oil. This really isn't a problem unless you have a faulty converter system for some reason. If you want to bypass the conversion, use fish oil which is already in the form the body uses and needs no conversion. However, be aware that not using the enzymes that convert these components will end up making them slack, so I would suggest switching it up every now and then between fish oil and flax oil. For those having acne erupt from this you may be allergic or you may be using flax with lignans. If you are using the seeds, you can try an oil without the lignans included. Some oils have them included, so watch the labels. Lignans give flax oil the phytoestrogenic properties. So, if you do not want to add estrogen effects, simply choose an oil without lignans (walmart sells them without lignans). :)

Pros:

cheap, many health benefits besides improved skin condition, keeps you regular, may help with ibs

Cons:

annoying having to remember to take ground flaxseed daily, may cause purging at first, not suitable for everyone

it works for me. i had been taking two tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily from july 2010 until about a month ago (beginning march 2011). while i was taking the ground flaxseed, my skin was clear, i didnt get clogged skin and rarely got cysts either. (i also take msm, cod liver oil and probiotic supplements too and these also play a big part in keeping my skin nice) then i got lazy and stopped taking the flaxseed and my skin got dull and clogged. my acne didnt return, but my skin wasnt at its best. i have since started taking two 1000mg flaxseed oil capsules daily and my skin has improved (its less hassle to take the capsules than the ground flaxseed for me). my face looks brighter, its "glowing" and my dehydration lines have gone too. i cant say enough good things about flaxseed, and this is from someone who has been taking it consistently for 8 months. i understand that it doesnt work for everyone though, some people swear by biotin but ive used that on two separate occasions and it gave me so many cysts, it was horrible. i think if you go into it knowing you might purge at the start (i got cysts on my chin and inflamed pimples on my cheeks but i stuck to it and they healed up nicely) then you might give flaxseed more of a chance instead of panicking because its bringing spots to the surface when you first start taking it. i am putting that my acne severity is very light, i dont actually have any active acne anymore, just scars that i am getting rid of with retin-a, use of sunscreen and gentle exfoliation, however, prior to taking any supplements, my acne was moderately severe.

Pros:

Too much to count!

Cons:

So far, nothing that I've noticed.

I started taking flaxseed oil in hopes it would help clear up my skin. I've been dealing with acne since I was a young teenager, and I'm so sick of it. I noticed a difference immediately. My skin feels wonderful; I feel like I'm glowing. I've also noticed that my hair is softer and more luxurious, which was a nice surprise. After reading others' posts, I suppose I should mention that I work out daily, I have a healthy diet, and I take a multi-vitamin. I also wash my face twice a day. But all that has been consistent over the years, and I have tried endless treatments. I used to eat salmon regularly, and that helped my skin, but after having my son I can no longer stand the smell of fish. Which is why I decided to try flaxseed oil. And I'm glad I did, because I feel wonderful now.

Pros:

- Good for you
- Helps reduce acne
- easy to take

Cons:

- Does not cure acne or compeltely get rid of it but it does help reduce it

I personally would suggest taking the 3 oils, Omega 3,6 & 9. Instead of taking only flaxseed or fish oil.. I take 2-3 caps a day of the 3 essencial fatty acids which is combined in one single capsule. I get it at the health food store its pricey but worth it to me. Depends on if you want to take vitamins or not. It does help. Because Ive been taking it for over 7 months now and I stopped taking it for a week and I broke out really bad just our of no where! Its something you do need to take daily and keep up with to see results!! And also make sure to take this with a facial cleansing regimen aswell for best results.

Pros:

I love Flaxseed Oil!! I used to have consistent, moderate breakouts on my chin that I self-diagnosed as hormonal acne. Within one week of taking one capsule a day I noticed a dewiness to my face and definitely less breakouts(though I still had some). After about a month, I increased my dosage to two a day and since then, my red, hormonal bumps have been basically non-existent(except for that time of the month which Aleve is now helping me with).

Cons:

None

I'm glad I didn't read most of these ratings before trying flaxseed because I would have definitely been afraid of the aftermath. I don't know why it worked for me and not for others, but I'm sure glad that I finally found something. This was the only extra addition to my routine, so I know the improvement came from it.

Pros:

All Natural, Great Flavor, Boosts of energy, Healthy Bowels, Cancer fighter...Omega-3's!!!

Cons:

Seeds get stuck in my teeth...lol...big deal, right?

Cleared up my SEVERE to MODERATE acne. 30 Years old and suffered with ACNE since I was 16. Who knew that acne is from within? Doctors will NEVER tell you to change their diet because if we all ate better & truly focused on how certain foods cleared up our acne and helped us become more healthy, then doctors and pharmaceutical companies would CRUMBLE & go out of business!!! I have been on every kind of acne antibiotic, topical skin creams & gels and even expensive skin care products...NONE worked. It's all about how we take care of our bodies; what we put in will reflect on our skin which is our largest organ. I have had MANY years of IBS - and constipation. Did you know constipation is linked to acne? yes. When our bodies cannot rid itself of all toxins through the bowls on a regular basis, it rids the toxins out through our skin, thus ACNE forms!!! I did an ACNE DETOX for one week and continued to eat well, and I am Finally cured at 30 years old!!!! xoxo
