Before you start, feel free to check out what users of The Regimen have to say if you'd like.
Below is a typical experience on The Regimen. However, many people say it took them 3-4 months to get clear, and they are thankful that they stuck it out.
|Mild to moderate acne||Moderate to severe acne|
|Week 1||Mild improvement. Skin is red, irritated, and itches.||Usually slight improvement, some people have reported an initial worsening of acne. Skin is red, irritated, and itches.|
|Week 2||Further clearing, followed perhaps by a breakout. The breakout clears more quickly than usual. Skin is slightly less red and irritated. Red spots from old acne linger.||Clearing, followed by a breakout. Skin is still red, irritated and itchy. Person is considering other options.|
|Week 3||Skin is definitely improved. Some cases are cleared up. Others are well on their way. Red spots from old acne linger.||Skin continues to clear and breakouts are minimized. Skin is less red and no longer itches. Red spots from old acne are evident.|
|Week 4||Skin is looking very good. No new acne is forming, but red spots from old acne may still remain.||For many people, skin is looking remarkably clearer. Others are still frustrated that their skin is not yet clear, but push on. Redness is gone. Red spots from old acne remain.|
|Week 5-8||Skin stays clear, with perhaps a pimple here and there which clears quickly. Red spots are slowly fading.||For many people, the skin is now clear. For others, the struggle continues with intermittent breakouts. Red spots are fading slowly. Despite the urge to deviate from The Regimen and experiment, the person sticks with it precisely.|
|Week 8+||Ongoing treatment keeps skin clear. Red spots continue to fade until complexion is beautiful and clear.||Usually by month 3 even tough cases are well on their way to becoming under total control. Many less severe cases now simply require ongoing treatment to maintain acne-free skin. Red spots continue to fade to nothing. An isolated pimple from time to time is normal and to be expected.|
If your experience does not closely match the above descriptions, don't fret. Stay patient and follow The Regimen precisely and you should see results. If you get a random breakout at any point, look back over the two weeks prior to the breakout and consider how you may have irritated your skin or veered off The Regimen. It can take a while for acne to surface.
The Regimen should be performed both in the morning and in the evening, about 10-12 hours apart.
|1.1||Gently splash your face and neck with warm water from your sink. Or in the shower, allow a gentle stream of warm water from your showerhead to gently splash across your face.||This preps your skin for washing. By not rubbing the skin when getting the face wet, you are reducing irritation. Medical research shows reducing irritation is vital to clear acne. Avoid very hot water because it can scald the skin, which can also be irritating.|
|1.2||Dispense a generous amount (2 full pumps if using Acne.org Cleanser) of cleanser and generously lather up hands with cleanser. Be vigorous and take the time needed to get a good lather going.||Using two full pumps of cleanser will allow you to generate a generous lather, which will allow you to gently move the cleanser over your skin, thus reducing irritation.|
|1.3||Gently wash problem areas with your bare hands for 10 seconds or less. This may seem different from what you’re used to but do not wash for longer than 10 seconds. Do not use a wash cloth or any other cleansing device, as they are far too irritating compared to bare hands.||Cleansing is necessary because it removes surface oils. This allows the benzoyl peroxide (Step 2) to penetrate. Washing for this short a period of time reduces irritation.|
|1.4||Gently splash your face and neck with warm water until the cleanser is rinsed away. Or allow a gentle stream of water from your showerhead to splash across your face until the cleanser is rinsed away. Allow the water to do the work.||Remaining exceedingly gentle, barely touching your skin as you perform The Regimen, is necessary to achieve completely clear skin.|
|1.5||Using the tips of a soft, absorbent towel, gently pat your skin dry, barely touching your face with the towel. Allow any remaining moisture to evaporate on its own. Never rub or scrub your skin dry.||When you stay extremely gentle and let the towel do the work, you are again taking necessary steps to avoid irritation.|
|1.6||Wait until your skin is completely dry. This takes around 5 minutes after washing your face at the sink or 10-15 minutes after a shower. Feel free to do other things while your face dries properly.||Letting your skin dry completely allows the benzoyl peroxide (Step 2) to absorb. Do not begin Step 2 until your skin is completely dry.|
|2.1||Wash and dry hands.||This helps remove any oils that may have accumulated on your hands. Exposure to some oils can aggravate acne.|
|2.2||See dosage chart below. You'll start at 0.5mL of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and work up to 4mL.||Using an extremely generous amount of benzoyl peroxide is the heart and soul of this regimen. When in doubt, use more! Using 2.5% strength benzoyl peroxide allows for maximum effectiveness without the excessive dryness and irritation of higher strength solutions. Use only 2.5% benzoyl peroxide with this regimen.|
The pictures below represent how much benzoyl peroxide you need if treating your entire face. If your problem area is only part of your face, you will need less. If your problem area includes the front of your neck, you will need more.
|2.3||Spread the benzoyl peroxide on your face very gently with your fingers. Carefully avoid the delicate area around the eyes. Do not rub. Just allow your fingers to glide over your skin, spreading it around and letting it absorb on its own. Applying this way may take a couple of minutes. If after 3 minutes, the benzoyl peroxide is not fully absorbed, allow the rest to absorb on its own.||The more gently you treat your skin, the faster and more completely you will clear up. Allowing the benzoyl peroxide to absorb on its own without rubbing is a crucial step in reducing irritation.|
|2.4||Wait 5-15 minutes for your skin to dry. Do not rinse off the benzoyl peroxide. Once it is applied, you will leave it on the skin.||Benzoyl peroxide oxygenates skin, dries and peels inside the pore. It is important to give it the time it needs to properly medicate before introducing moisturizer.|
|3.1||Wash and dry hands.||Washing hands removes any oils that may have accumulated.|
|3.2||Dispense 4mL, or about a teaspoon's worth, of moisturizer (2 pumps if using Acne.org Moisturizer). When in doubt, use more.
Note: If you have oily skin and 4mL (2 pumps) of moisturizer will not absorb, try applying only 2mL (1 pump), wait for it to dry, and then apply another 2mL (1 pump) of moisturizer. Extremely oily skin may only require 2mL (1 pump) of moisturizer.
|Dryness is irritation. Properly reintroducing hydration to the skin not only eliminates flakiness which benzoyl peroxide can produce, it also helps keep the skin from becoming too dry. It is vital to keep skin in balance. Do not skip this step and do not skimp on moisturizer.|
|3.3||Apply moisturizer very gently with your fingers much like you applied the benzoyl peroxide. Avoid the delicate eye area because the moisturizer can pick up the underlying benzoyl peroxide. Do not rub. Allow your fingers to gently glide over the skin. This should take no longer than 3 minutes. If after 3 minutes, the moisturizer is not fully absorbed, allow the rest to absorb on its own.||
Applying moisturizer this gently and briefly reduces irritation, which is a must to achieve 100% clear skin.
|Important If you experience dryness and flakiness, which is common especially in the first 2-3 weeks of benzoyl peroxide application, apply moisturizer as often as needed. Just be sure to remain ultra-gentle. For extra help with dryness, try adding 5-6 drops of jojoba oil to your moisturizer in your palm, mix, and apply.|
Glycolic acid can take The Regimen to the next level, helping you to achieve even more reliably clear skin with a healthy glow. After you've been on The Regimen for at least 1 month, try using glycolic acid in place of your usual nightly moisturizer every 2-3 nights. Alternately, mix 1/2 glycolic acid and 1/2 moisturizer in your palm, mix, and apply every night.
Flakiness control: If you are on The Regimen and are experiencing ongoing problems with flaky skin, adding in glycolic acid as outlined above will completely eliminate flakes.
