Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

I used it on my chest and it cleared it up overnight. I then tried it on my face 4 days ago and it is working great. It is fading my post red marks and my cysts are completely flat. All of my whiteheads were gone literally overnight. I do have to leave it on all night for it to work. I tried washing it off after 10-20 minutes and it had no effect. Seriously I cannot recommend this product enough. I am a 22 year old female and have never had more than 3 pimples at a time. I've been having bad breakouts for the past 6 months and this is the only thing that works for me.

Dried Skin Out :/
First off, I had bought this product back in HIGHSCHOOL for the first time and I loved it! I have never had bad acne but I had a few spots here and there with a little redness. It helped out so much. I thought 7 years later ( With a couple zits/redness from birth control) I would try it again. Hey why not it worked wonders the first time.. I bought it and did the whole 1 step, 2 step ect.. treatment ( I purchased the starter kit) the first 24 hours of useing it/ having the spot treatment on my face, I could see that the acne spot had started to go away and the redness went down ( even other people at work noticed) so I thought "HELL YA, ITS ACTULLY WORKING!!" the next day I did the same steps and went to bed, that morning i woke up and i felt like i had the tightest, roughest skin. It dried my skin out SO BAD! It hurt to even open my mouth! I immediatly stopped using it and now i have to return it. I am so bummed because i was seeing results! Did this happen to anyone else?! Is this normal?! HELP!

does work well as spot treatment

Pros:

Works great if your zits respond to sulfur ingredient
the gel like consistency is not over drying
cheap solution that is potent

Cons:

smelly
once you stop use zits come back (like with most acne treatments)

This product has a gooie-gel like consistency, but the sulfur has always worked well for my breakouts. I use it as spot treatment and my zits go away in 2 days of regular use. Sometimes, the zit will shrink with in hours on same day. Like most sulfur products it does have unpleasant odor, but I rather take that for 10 minutes than acne breakouts! The small bottle has a lot of product that lasts a while. You don't want to use too much as it's very potent.

Pros:

NONE

Cons:

EVERYTHING!
Leaves extreme Acne
Went from Mod acne to Severe
Scaring
Extreme Dry Skin
Redness
Peelling
Huge Holes in face
Acne where is was not before
Burning

I only wish I could show everyone a before and after picture of the terrible things Murad has done to my skin. I have tried almost all the products out there but this by far IS THE WORST! HUGE MISTAKE. I immediately starting having breakouts where I never had them. The face wash, acne gel and spot treatment burned like wildfire on my face and it never improved and acne never cleared (got extremley worse). After one month I have to stop. It has ruined my face. It left me with huge gaping holes, cystic acne (currently 6 spots and 2 with gaping holes after 4 weeks). I have never had tiny little bumps of acne like I currently do ALL OVER my jaw and chin. I went from mod acne to severe in 2 weeks flat. Purging period my @ss. I am totally embarassed by my skin and have not been around friends or family for the last 2 weeks. I am a Nanny for a living and the children have taken notice and it is so embarassing. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT. I wish I had read THESE reviews as apposed to the ones on the acutally Murad site. THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT DESERVE A 1 RATING...MORE LIKE NEGATIVE 100....AWFUL

Cons:

I hated this product, I feel very bad for making my mom buy it, did nothing what so ever for my skin. That is when I switched to Doxycycline, and it worked wonders on my face!

Pros:

AT 1ST, soft texture, pimples seem to go away, redness goes down.

Cons:

After using this product for a week in a half my face broke out in horrible cystic acne. Lumps the size of marbles on my cheeks and much more...

So, its been about a month in a half since i used this product and i would like to say my face looks great,BUT lets get to my story im 17yrs old and have lived in New York my whole life. MY acne was always light i had maybe 3 to 4 pimples on my bad day and if it was really bad my right cheek would breakout bad (ONLY CAUSE I SLEEP ON THAT CHEEK ) and i saw a murad infomerical and so i decided to order it NOT READING ANY REVIEWS just over judgement over a stupid tv add. let me just tell anyone who has SENSTIVE FAR SKIN! DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT BUY THIS! After the 1st week BOTH MY CHEEKS and let me remind you i only ever really got acne on my right one both broke out in HORRIBLE CYSTIC ACNE I called the doctors and the stupid murad people and they said i had a allergic reaction and the "purging process" which by the way is a bunch of horse S%@t and so i stopped using it all together I STAYED OUT OF SCHOOL FOR A WHOLE WEEK cause my face hurt and was dry. i was so embarrased i wanted to drop out of high school and depression was unbearable!! PLEASE until i found a friend that used ALOE VERA GEL STRAIGHT FROM THE PLANT! and she told me that putting it on at night works great and i cant tell you how much my face has improved! MY OILS GONE and acne is gone! BOTTOM LINE if you have skin problems and need help ALOE VERA!!!!!! works amazing. I still cant believe what my face looked like almost 2 months ago! i took pics of my face and its 110% better to anyone out there that has FAIR LIGHT SKIN aka ( sensitive skin ) DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! and good luck to anyone who uses my ideas!

Pros:

Clears up skin effectively, Helps a lot

Cons:

If you don't use it on a regular basis 2 times a day, doesn't help

Since I don't buy the kits, I buy full size products individually the cost is a huge amount, but I convinced our clinics to start selling it so I get it for free now. But it has cleared up alot of my skin, the exception being on my cycle and when I sweat a lot. It has helped so much.

Pros:

none

Cons:

purging, made acne worse, a lot of whiteheads that eventually flared up

I saw a lot of positive reviews on Sephora so I tried this as a prevention system when I just began to break out. But this is ultimately THE REASON why I'm here on acne.org because I'm still recovering from the purging this murad caused. Just within few days, I began breaking out a lot more and was left with a lot of whiteheads (tiny bumps) on my jawline/neck area which I never had any acne before in my life. Unless you can cope with the crazy purging that everyone is talking about, don't try this. Their main ingredient is Salicylic Acid, and almost all of their products have them, which probably why it causes purging.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
